This store is bad ass!! Has great customer service and great quality merchandise they cary everything u could possibly want! They have Ben Davis clothing, dickies, carnhart etc the employees ate friendly and helpful in assisting you with what ever they can. My wife was looking for a Zip up ben davis sweatshirt but unfortunately they didnt have her size but, she found a different ben davis sweatshirt that she liked and decided to go with it considering they had her size. Like i said before finding parking on haight street is difficult but if you find parking you must make your way down to this spot they for sure have cool stuff if your looking to buy or even just browse make sure you stop here. What ever happened to good surplus shops? The stock here is laughably bad-I mean for some reason they've decided that majority of their stock is gonna be workwear like Ben Davis and Carhartt? Which just straight up isn't surplus, If I wanted a work jacket I'd go to a hardware store ya'feel? And the few pieces of actual surplus they have feel sort of like babies first surplus, like 90s-00s era German stuff and a couple of bits of American from a handful of different eras- tbh the most interesting things they have are the pins, and even those are pretty mid. I'd recommend somewhere else but all the good surplus places are closing, leaving behind gentriefied jokes like this. I remember this place being a bit better years ago, but not by much. read more

Today I decided to take the 7 bus to Haight Street and have an excursion. I started at Stanyan and Haight. I went to Cal Surplus where I was greeted. I decided to get a cheap cowboy hat and Carhartt beanie none of which stay on my head very well. Oh well. It was frivolous and fun. Cal Surplus is a good shop for hats and some surplus things, but it's not too militant or army. It's fun for hipsters and people who like surplus stores on Haight. read more

Cal Surplus is a little military surplus shop in the Haight, with clothes, hats, personal safety weaponry and accessories, flags, patches, pins and collectible posters. We loved the wall of assorted military and sporting hats (and, OK, I admit I loved the ladies hiphugger panties with "BOOTY CAMP" across the bum, haha!) We purchased some thick wool gloves- which was sorely needed as it was FA-reezing outside- and a couple of Air Force pins. Friendly, knowledgable staff and reasonable prices. It's not a huge store but they do have plenty of inventory to browse through. OG Clarence is the man, he knew my size as soon as I asked him what size Dickies to try. I tried a size bigger & a size smaller just to compare, & neither of them fit right at all. He eye-balled me & picked the perfect fit! I just unfortunately didn't like how they looked on me, but yo-- This guy knows his stuff & is always puttin' a smile on my face when I pop up in there. I buy all my Rothco pants here & they're super good quality & have lasted me a super long time. I went in and promptly said to the wizened old man "do you sell goggles?" "You bet your ass we do," he stated. Then he proceeded to size me up as the type of gal that was looking for a pair of vintage Swiss goggles. If you scratch the paint, viola they're brass underneath. I kinda balked at the $20 price tag (they were held together by a black shoelace), and the man could see my hesitation. "You're going to regret not buying these. I love this place! Need some fingerless gloves real quick? They got you! Need a duffel bag? Here you go! Pepper spray! A must-have for a little girl in a big city. My only complaint is their prices for bandannas/handkerchiefs are outrageous. It's like $2.99 or $3.99 or something like that! Which is insane! Anywhere else they are .99 cents or less. The store opens at 11am a/c I think just right. The staff are friendly I didn't got their names. When you enter the store they will greet you & ask if they can help look for anything. Allows you to examine & try their items to be more accurate for your needs. The only problem is that I tried to email then to inquire to the item that I'm looking for but I can't get thru. I went up here searching for a wool blanket that I could get for cheap, and I almost panicked when I couldn't find them at first. They had a choice between Czech and Swiss. The blankets were still pricey at $25 (which, I'll admit, was $5 off,) but I was cold and really wanted a blanket. Sure, it's typical surplus fare. My blanket still smells of cosmoline, but it has become practically a security blanket. The thing that really makes this place awesome, though, is the staff. This store is exactly what you would expect going into it, it has all the basics at a fairly reasonable price. Nothing too fancy yet there's definitely things there that you didn't go in for but will walk out with. They definitely cater to the "trustafarians" with all the patches and pins and grunge stuff in the front, but there are some gems hidden within, and of every color. You just have to make sure you're getting what you want because all sales are final. They have recently upgraded to using square so that has helped out with payment. The dude behind the counter was so nice and helpful, he talked my ear off with stories On how he got to the US and started workin at this place in the late 70s- sounds weird, but it was entertaining... Ever since I got into airsoft a few months ago I've been hitting up pretty much every military surplus store in the Bay Area, looking to fill out my kit. I decided to check it out when I was in the area, and found it to be a nice little store. This place is definitely the smallest store I've been to while searching for gear for my new hobby, but I was pleased to find they managed to fit a good variety of different products into their store. While their selection of items wasn't quite what I was looking for in particular, the items they do carry are all sold at a good price, and guy who helped me (who seemed to be the guy running the place) was really nice, engaging, and helpful. I ended up picking up a skull bandana and a California state flag patch for my kit. I came into this store the same day I made my disappointing stop at Kaplan's (which earned a 1 star Yelp review from me) and the difference was night and day. While neither establishment is a dedicated surplus store, the friendly, helpful, and welcoming environment at Cal Surplus was a welcome change for the better, and earned them an extra star just on service alone. read more

I was in the store today and, while I didn't end up buying anything, I had a fantastic conversation with the older gentleman that works there. He was quite friendly and funny and attentive to what I was looking for. That said, I was in there for some costume props for a confederate civil war soldier costume. I was told they don't stock anything from the confederate army - only the union army. To me, that feels like a pretty narrow-minded way to run a business. While they're certainly entitled to run their business as they please, I still gotta knock off a star for that. That minor quibble aside, I'd definitely go back there.
