Let me start by saying that the Hudson, OH area is fortunate to have a true cake artist like Karin of "Cakes by Karin". My wife grew up in the area and we returned not just for the holiday season but for the 1st Bday of our daughter. 1st Bday's should be special and we were happy to be able to celebrate it among family. We of course wanted to buy an nice cake for her bday and found "Cakes by Karin" on Yelp. My daughters theme animal throughout her first year of life is a sloth and we wanted to incorporate that theme into her Bday cake. So we found some pics on-line, of what we wanted the cake to look like based on her theme. What we chose was something of a "fantasy" cake...as in no one can possibly do this right? Ultimately reached out to Karin with a pic and the question, "can you make a cake to look like this?" Not living in the Hudson, OH area our communications with Karin were via email or txt. She said yes and gave us a price...we settled on the pick up date and paid on line. "Easy peasy lemon squeeze" as my 15 yr old would say. I have to admit I was nervous the day we scheduled to pick up the cake. My wife talked about a show called "Nailed it ", and how this cake (for our daughters first bday) could go the way of the cakes on the show...in other words badly...we were both nervous. Like a true professional the cake was in an amazing box wrapped with ribbon and a candle...the cake looked so amazing we almost cried. Of course it tasted perfect. Everything about the cake was impressive...everyone who attend the party was impressed lots of o's and ah's to go around...for the cake. My daughter is not going to remember this specific bdabut the pics prove that went the extra mile for her first bday...it was all helped along by Karin at "cakes by Karin". As far as I'm concerned she a treasure and if you have a "fantasy " cake you want realized...I doubt anyone in the area can to a better job! read more

Karin worked on a one day notice to get a birthday cake done and delivered. It was absolutely beautifully decorated, pictures attached. I went with the chocolate cake with raspberry middle. I was told it was very pretty but "ok" tasting. I think I should have gone with vanilla which has many 5* reviews. Karin went above and beyond in making my vision a reality for my grandmother's 90th birthday cake. She was open to my unique requests and got really creative with it. She was awesome to work with and incorporated everything I imagined and made helpful suggestions based on her expertise. I called Karin to inquire about a cake and was treated very rudely, almost like I was bothering her. Her tone and attitude were not nice when I called and she said she couldn't even offer a price range and put it on me to send her a picture. I wanted to support a local business but I ended up feeling like a bother. I will go with an established bakery in town that was kind and helpful and got back to me very quickly. The good: I recently attended a wedding in the area (I live out of state) and while the cake was acceptable and it was well received at the reception. The fondant was smooth and had no cracking. The not so good: It's one of those situations where the audience was not made aware of the backstory, and there was one. From the pick up time (still haven't figured out how that could have been so wrong-delivery was not an option provided in this instance) to the cake not being the one ordered-Ballpark maybe, but not the one ordered. Since I am a Pastry Chef by trade, decorating was to be finished by me. I am still stumped as to why she charged full price-as if it had been decorated. The decorator asked if we would like the cake "boxed" as we were on the way over. I am still confused about that one...It was going to be a slow ride with a four tier wedding cake on my lap if it weren't boxed On top of all of that, my friend was oversold a cake that fed at the minimum another entire reception of guests. While my friend listened to my advice on cake size, she was led into believing that she needed an extra tier. There is an industry standard on cake portions. You can use it for pricing or even only an idea, but there IS a guideline. Then, as we got in the car we were given an 8 inch "extra" cake in addition to four tier cake. So the couple saved the top 6 inch tier for the anniversary, have an 8 inch cake and a full 12 inch cake left over. That equates to money. And for my friend-lost money. Everyone enjoyed the cake. So there is more good. I am glad there are local businesses that can be supported and that my friend shoes this route. I do feel that the other issues are just as important and items the bride should not have had to consider. read more

Karin makes the best cake I have ever had. It looked wonderful when she delivered it and set it up, and it was the most talked about item at our wedding. People would come in the door, and instead of taking pictures of us, would take pictures of the cake! We had so many comments on how good it was! In fact, it tasted so good, that even though we had 61 guests and 103 pieces of cake, there was no cake left after the reception; everyone was taking pieces home! Attended a wedding with one of Karin's cakes, not impressed at all with the decorating--looked like something from a grocery store bakery. The cake tasted like a boxed mix and not at all like one would expect for the price. Not to mention the owner was unpleasant to deal with and frankly, rude. Would not recommend. read more
