What a great lil bakery. I came here in an attempt to try Cleveland's famous cassata cake at ground zero bc some online research indicates this is THE spot. I was worried they wouldn't sell individual portions so I bought one at heinman's before coming and that gut instinct was correct bc I did not see any other than the large normal cake sizes in the fridge behind the counter. They did have quite few other baked goods in individual sizes which felt like a sign that we needed to try them. They have MASSIVE cookies in really slutty flavors but we still have leftovers from losing our sanity ordering from insomnia cookies the other night so we went in a different direction. I can never pass up an apple turnover which was flaky heaven. GF ordered a cinnamon twist which had such a delicate cakey texture. This bakery has free parking . It is across the street from the bowling alley. This bakery has been open since I was a child. My Mama used to get me a Cassata cake every birthday! That's probably why I don't like Cassata cake anymore lol. Fortunately for me, there's a zillion other choices at Barona's! Everytime I go back home, I always stop by for the Almond Joy cookies! They are simply delicious! I'm glad to see that the prices have not gotten ridiculous like the rest of the world! My cookies were $1.45 each. I also purchased the Apple Caramel cookie and the Reese Peanut Butter cookie.. these were bigger so it was $2.50 each! All were delicious especially the Apple Caramel. It was my birthday, and I was given the wrong cake. Now my birthday is ruined. We have been going to this establishment for our birthdays since the 80s and are Italian, Sicilian and always found your cakes to be of great quality. My dad called to order my cake specifically a cassata cake with the ricotta chocolate chips, and whipped cream frosting. When we opened it, we got the standard cassata cake with strawberries and custard. I asked my dad what they said when he went in and he said that they took it in the back right when he showed up to put my name on it, so it was not made to order, they just gave him the standard cassata cake already walk-in pre made. read more

I went looking for glazed donuts but they were out so I found other items to purchase. The problem came when it was time to pay. There were two customers in the shop, one white, one black. We both paid by card but I was the only one to be asked for ID. I asked the lady helping me about it, first she shrugged her shoulders then she gave me some bs about fraud. Every time I visit Cleveland, my mom and I go to Baraona's. It is usually always an experience. This time as usual, I ordered a cassata cake for pick up and when we got there, we had to get other desserts lol. The representative who waited on us was knowledgeable at her work but she had absolutely no enthusiasm. It seemed as if she didn't want to be there. This kind of turned off our experience this time around. As usually we have someone who has high spirits. The bakery is nice inside and customers are usually excited to get there goods. Best cakes hands down. Growing up in the 70's in Cleveland we had a couple great bakeries. Now there's only one left and that is Barona's on Libby Rd. Their casada cakes are the best I've ever eaten and their chocolate fudge cake is a chocolate lovers dream. I hope they stay around another 100 yrs or so. read more

While staying at a nearby hotel my husband was searching for a bakery to grab a morning sweet treat. He stumbled upon this one in his search and it was on our way to the city. It was a smart choice and seemed popular. The choices were overwhelming, I wish we could have said 1 of everything. We met the nicest woman while waiting and said we could not go wrong with the chocolate chip walnut, we also had to try the cassata cake but since traveling we got the cupcake. I bought the German chocolate, lemon meringue and the cassata cake one. They all tasted great. My preference is German chocolate. But the other two were very close as well. Our family has been a loyal customer for generations. Sorry to report that today's experience was so disappointing due to the rude and dismissive customer service we encountered from the baker. A simple request for an extra small cup of frosting to accompany the $30 cake I was buying was denied, even after offering to pay extra. Baronas has lost my patronage and I will not be endorsing to friends. read more

Don't be intimidated by the line when you first walk in, it moves quickly. Excellent customer service, the employee who helped me was very kind. As for the food, I got two chocolate chunk cookies and a brownie. The cookies aren't bad but maybe a little generic? They didn't wow me. The brownie is pretty good though! The icing on top is incredible. I saw sets of 6 cupcakes and I wish they had been selling cupcakes individually! Would love to try one of their cupcakes. Judging by the selection in the case, I think they have something for everyone. I'll definitely be back. read more

New to this bakery and falling in love. Cakes are fresh, flavorful, and perfect. It has a small "mom and pop" shop esthetic, organized and clean. Service was very nice and friendly. Location is a bit strange but easy to access. There is a big sign but I could understand if someone would simply pass it by if they are not familiar with the area. The street is cluttered with other businesses and traffic can be thick and hasty. Small parking lot. Selections are good with pastries, donuts, cookies, full cake and little treats. It's not an overload of options so I could decide quickly. I do wish they had slices of their larger cakes. I bought a whole Cassata Cake to try which was delicious, delicate, perfect moisture, and light. Fortunately I have people to share but it's was so good I really wished I been selfish. Cassata cakes are to die for. Delicious! Do yourself a favor and call ahead a few days for a cassata cake. You can take a chance that they will have one but... it's a chance. And you don't want to go away empty handed. They are worth it. I have had other bakery items like cookies and other treats. All good. No complaints just full stomachs. Great friendly service, but even better sweet treats. I tried the German Chocolate Brownie and it was outstanding. Gooey and nutty, just the way I like my brownies. I frequent the area a lot and decided to pop in. It's a small mom and pops feel bakery. Most of their treats are made in house, some are catered in. How could I forget to review a place I have been eating at since an early age?!?! Great bakery, I love their cannoli. The may seem easy to make, but it does take the right touch to make a good one. They are delicious. The cookies are always good, they have many different kinds but the kolacki are my favorite. Haven't had something I didn't like here. Service: Went there several years ago with my dad. My 90 y/o dad, playfully and innocently asked "do you give samples?" The person who waited on us sternly scolded: "nothing for nothing!" walked away and did not immediately take our order-we had to call him back to us to order. This question must be heard in the bakery every day! I guess he told a 90 y/o Italian grandfather (who had patronized them with his family over time) off good and proper! I was humiliated. Our Italian family has promoted and patronized them for many, many years over time. My dad was treated like a beggar-totally not necessary and it says a lot about their mentality-money is the priority (you never hear of Baraona's donating or sponsoring any causes in the community). I ended up buying my dear father everything he wanted-he liked pastry with his coffee. Otherwise, I would have walked out-I just wanted to please my father and get him something he liked. Food: A couple of the items I bought were stale. A friend of mine got a wedding cake that was stale. Ambiance: it's a hole in the wall-it did not even smell like fresh baking was done on site. Baraona's may be happy to learn that my dad has since passed away and will not be darkening their doorstep again. Nor will I, my big Italian family, or any of our friends. There are other options out there. I cannot recommend this place even though my grandparents loved it and had a strong alliance. I shall never forgive them for unnecessarily hurting my father's feelings. Overall, not a class act. Not good operational business people here at present-it may have passed it's prime-lost in space and time. Maybe some personable, respectful, joyful people could be on the service end of things to save their reputation and Italian tradition. read more
