I have only tasted the cupcakes. The frosting and cake were both very good as far as flavor. Salted caramel was excellent! . Frosting has very rich, fresh buttercream taste. The negatives: more frosting than cake. As others said, cake was a bit dry. I would love to have this local business do well so I hope this constructive criticism will make a difference. read more

Love cake! If you have a vision for a cake, they'll bring it to life wonderfully, but if you don't have a vision (just an occasion), they'll help you come up with something great. Plus the cakes are yummy. And don't even get me started on the icing. Delicious. Also, Susan's customer service is top notch. I ordered a cake a while back, but got busy on the Saturday I was supposed to pick it up. By the time I realized, it was too late. They were closed for the day. The store is closed on Sundays, but Susan called me on her day off and arranged for me to get my cake. Above and beyond. Pro tip: if you don't eat animal products (or are just trying to cut back), try a vegan cake from Cake. I'm not sure I'd know it didn't have eggs or butter in it. read more

I've stopped in to get cupcakes and have ordered a few birthday cakes at Cake. All have received rave reviews. Michelle is incredibly accommodating. I called the day before a birthday to order a cake and she put together a custom cake in less than 24 hours (vanilla cake with lemon butter cream and raspberry preserves). I had wanted a lemon cake and she said if I had given her more time she'd have been able to do that for me, so if there is some flavor you don't see on their menu, ask! The flowers she used to decorate it were spectacular. We brought the cake with us to a local restaurant and people at the tables around us were amazed at how gorgeous the cake was. We shared the cake with other tables and everyone raved at how delicious it was. I was able to give her more notice for the next birthday cake I ordered (red velvet with cream cheese frosting). We gave her some vague suggestion about a horse theme for the design and what she came up with was stunning. While there I ordered several dozen cupcakes to bring to work with me. They were quickly scooped up and everyone loved them. Michelle and Mitch are a pleasure to work with and I'd highly recommend Cake. The one negative I will say about their product is that the sugar flowers on the cakes do have non-edible pieces on them. The little white stamens are some sort of plastic/string. That would have been good to know before someone at the birthday party ate them. Or perhaps use something that can be eaten. read more

We went to several bakeries before deciding to work with Michelle at Cake for our wedding. We didn't really like the cake factory type options, and were much more impressed by Michelle's one woman, small bakery. We loved that she took a personal interest in us and what we wanted for our cake, and she really worked with us and took the time to design a cake that we loved. Plus her cake is amazingly delicious, and she allowed us to customize the flavors to make it exactly what we wanted. The cake turned out exactly how we wanted it, and received several compliments both on how it looked and how it tasted. read more

Update from my previous review: this company not only reads their reviews but they also care about their customers! I just received an email from Michelle at Cake. and she was very appreciative of my review but also concerned about my cakes topper falling apart, she was so apologetic that she's sending my family a gift certificate to the bakery! I can't wait to use it on the next cake we order! This just proves to me they are a genuine company who cares about their product and their customers. Thank you Cake.! read more

Best gluten free golden cake ever!! My daughter is a celiac, but I'm not, and I can tell you this cake tasted as good as gluten! Was actually one of best cakes I ever had. This week we ordered chocolate GF cake for our daughter and it was fabulous. Highly recommend for celiacs, gluten free eaters. read more

Cake is a delicious little place nestled in Lexington. They bake the sweetest cupcakes around and they're full of flavor. The red velvet is rich and moist just like it should be. The frostings are a perfect mix of sweet and creamy ... at the last bite I wish I had more, but know I had enough. I ordered a birthday cake from Cake for my husband this year through e-mailing the owners. On the day expected I went in and my cake was beautiful! I want more reasons to celebrate and buy cakes from Cake. They have these sweet little raspberry candies on the check out counter for the customers ... I think they are the best candy (besides chocolate) I have ever tasted. The owners are so welcoming and nice. It's like walking into your own kitchen with your very own bakers. read more

Sweet abundant frosting. Moist(er than Kickass's) cupcake bottoms. Will have to return to try the "black tie affair" and another red velvet cupcake. Mini's are a great idea - you can try different varieties and eat more this way! read more

Happy birthday to me! I love a good piece of cake on my birthday and I got this year, from Cake. My spouse drives pass this place on his way to work, finally deciding to give it a try for my birthday. The goods: two layers of chocolate cake. The filling was raspberry and coconut. The frosting was peanut butter and chocolate buttercream. YUMMMMM! All was divine and right with the world! One problem: the little flowers on top were either sugar or gum paste. There were hard as rock and VERY unappetizing; thought I busted some dental work. We picked them all out and threw them away. So, a nearly perfect cake experience but make your flowers out of frosting! read more

Cake is my absolute favorite cake and cupcake bakery! I have never had any cakes that even compare to these cakes! The are amazingly flavorful and moist! I really can't get enough!! I have brought their cakes to many friends for their birthdays and they have become addicted as well! As for their cupcakes, they are really delicious! I have had cupcakes from most of the regional "hot spots", but none compare to those of Cake!! Lastly, the owner is really sweet personable lady! Both I and my wife thoroughly enjoy going in to Cake!! read more

I have nothing but good things to say about Cake. This stylish bake shop is located in a converted Victorian home right on Mass Ave in Lexington, directly across the street from the post office. Their sign is small, so you might miss it. I checked out Cake on the advice of my co-workers and I'm glad I did. They offer a reasonable selection of haute-cupcakes and mini cupcakes for guilt-less indulging. They also have a few cakes in their displays (ideal for drop ins on their way to a dinner a party). While I picked up a selection of mini cupcakes to sample at home, I chatted up the owners, a friendly husband and wife team, who told me they take orders for all sizes of cakes, including wedding. But enough about that. Lets talk quality. The Black Tie Affair cupcake (yellow cake, cream filling- like Boston creme, and chocolate frosting) made be realize that every other chocolate frosting I've tried before this is substandard. If you like chocolate this is your cupcake and Cake is your place! Other stand outs I tried include the carrot cake with pineapple cream cheese frosting (awesome!!) and the amazingly moist red velvet cupcake with rich cream cheese frosting (ridiculous). One of my above mentioned co-workers tried Cake and wasn't blown away by what she tried, but I think its because she ate the cupcake straight from the display fridge. Patience is a virtue, and you've gotta let them get to room temp before you dive in! Check out Cake and you'll be glad you did. read more

I found out Monday night I needed a cake for Friday and sent an email with the cake design I wanted - Cake so no problem! The cake was absolutely amazing and sooo delicious!! I worked with Jessica and she was very nice even with me being a pain in the butt. Now that I went here I will always get my cakes here. The red velvet with cream cheese frosting was just so delicious. read more

I just discovered this cake bakery in Lexington Center. The cupcakes are out of this world. I have tried the Minuteman (strawberry shortcake version of a cupcake) and pumpkin. The standard size cupcakes are $2.00. I think that's a great price! The minitures are $0.75 each. They have a great variety of flavors and you can tell they put a lot of love into the ingredients and quality. These cupcakes have a ton of flavor. The place is super-cute. As you walk in, the bakery is on the left and the display case and desk is on the right. It has a really homey feel to it. They have only been open two months. I will keep going back and can't wait to order a birthday cake from them. read more

I needed a special anniversary cake for my store manager yesterday and knew that this new bakery in Lexington center had fans already. I called the shop and was surprised that I could have something in about an hour and have it personalized. This cake was only about 6" round but WOW, it was a total decorated jewel at $20. My manager will thrilled and I will be going back every time I need a hostess gift. So much better than a bottle of wine or candy. read more

We ordered cupcakes for our companies 25th celebration. They were the hit of the party. We had the logo put on them. Perfect! The cupcakes were excellent and moist. Everyone loved them. read more

I used a groupon to get $40 off a cake order. I ordered my husband a motorcycle birthday cake modeled off his bike. It was awesome! They went above and beyond with details I wouldn't have thought of (open road all around the cake, the bike was actually upright on a stand). Even the coloring was right. And of course, the cake was delicious. Thanks again! read more

Loved the birthday cake we got for my mother from Cake! It was a big hit with the family. The buttercream icing was delicious. We will definitely be back. Best, Jennifer S. read more

I have been getting my special occasion cakes from Cake for about 8 years. The new owner, Susan, has improved on an already wonderful product! The cakes are so moist and rich, and the butter cream frosting is the best I have ever tasted, probably because everything is made in-house from scratch. Susan and her staff are truly artists and have made beautiful cakes for me for birthdays, confirmation and graduations. When I have picked up my cake, I get to peak into the case to see the other beautiful creations, especially the tiered cakes. The cupcakes are a family favorite and everyone complains when I visit Lexington center and don't come home with some. read more

Cake is by far my favorite place to order cakes. Susan bakes amazingly beautiful, delicious creations. She designed a lego cake for my son's 10th birthday that was incredible. Susan is delightful to work with and takes a lot of care in providing exactly what you ask for. The cake flavors and buttercreams are delicious and always taste fresh! This is also a bakery that does not use nuts, so for anyone with nut allergies, it's a huge plus! Julie F. read more

I appreciate the feedback from Cake's owner. Being a cupcake lover, I know to eat them at room temperature. Yes, the waiting is the hardest part but it's usually worth it. In this case, letting the cakes get to room temperature was not the problem. It was the cupcakes themselves that could not be saved. read more

Ordered few birthday cupcakes. Very happy with the results. The cupcakes tasted great. I wanted a decoration of all the things my husband likes. The lady baker added an extra cupcake at not cost on which she wrote happy birthday. It was very thoughtful of her. read more

Cake - Cupcakes with a theme - Bakeries Near Me - Lexington, Massachusetts

Cake made our wedding cake in June (currently featured on their website, the one with the leaves wrapping around) and it was the MOST delicious cake I have ever had! Could not have been better, the service was top notch, and would recommend to anyone who is having a wedding!! It is a lovely bakery with fantastic cakes and cupcakes, as well as an amazing baker! Cannot say enough good things. read more

I wish I could give this place 5 stars. However the cake is always dry and crumbly. The frosting tastes so good that I tried the place a few times, yet each time I had this problem. Because they don't cover the whole top with frosting, all the exposed parts get stale and hard. I just wish they would take steps to prevent this as they could have been really good. All in all I'd recommend you try other bakeries. read more

If you want a unique and personalized cake then this is the place to go! For my father's 90th Birthday we gave the owner some of his favorite quotes and she displayed them as pages of a book on the cake. Everyone at the party was impressed and the cake was delicious! We have since purchased cakes from Cake for other occasions and continue to be pleased with her innovative creations. read more

Since I was working in Lexington when we were wedding-planning, we got our wedding cake as well as a groom's cake from here. The tasting process was super easy, Michelle was very accommodating, and the prices are great. For a 3-tiered wedding cake, we were able to get two different flavors (red velvet, berries and gold). My husband has a special love for strawberry cake with chocolate frosting, and Michelle said she'd be happy to custom-make that combination for the groom's cake. Unfortunately, what we actually got for a groom's cake was yellow cake with strawberries in the middle and regular buttercream frosting. All of the cakes looked and tasted great, but we were really disappointed didn't get the cake he'd been so excited about. Michelle did offer to make him the right cake at any time, but since we now live in California, that sadly doesn't seem very likely. read more

Ordered a cake for a company event and ended up picking up some cupcakes for my husband. The cake was absolutely adorable - they did an amazing job on the decorating. The flavor combination of the cake was lovely, but the cake itself was a bit on the dry side. Feedback from the co-workers was really good, and overall was happy with the purchase. Now...on to the cupcakes. Love the fact they had petite cupcakes - more to try! The two I tried were the lemon (meh - nothing great),and double chocolate (AH-MAZING!). The cupcakes are well worth the visit, so 4 stars! read more

Ordered a cake here and the gentleman on the phone was very nice and helpful. He helped me decide what flavors to get and recommended the size for the amount of people we were having. It was delivered right on time and had beautiful sugar flowers all over the cake. It was such a variety of beautiful flowers, we were all very impressed. I have never seen so many different kinds on a cake before! Everyone really enjoyed the cake. Will order from here again. read more

I picked up some cupcakes this past weekend and to my surprise, the cupcakes were stale. I'm surprised and disappointed since the last time I visited the cupcakes were moist and delicious. The red velvet was dry and hard. Maybe it was overcooked or just old? Sometimes I wished owners would sample their products. SMH read more

OMG!!!! Cake was delicious! Staff was wonderful! Can't wait for another special event.

I bought cupcakes from Cake about a year ago and never returned because as previous reviewers said, they were dry, dry dry. I wasn't impressed at all. This past week, I needed a cake made for my daughter's first birthday. She has a nut allergy so I don't have the luxury of just picking a cake up at a grocery store. So I took a chance and ordered a cake from Cake. Wow was the cake amazing! And beautifully decorated. I ended up ordering a second cake from them for a smash cake photo for the following week (which they were able to whip up with a day's notice -- thank you so much!) It turns out that ownership has changed hands and that tells me it may be responsible for how amazingly moist (and delicious) my cakes were. This won't be my last order from Cake! read more

LOVE does not fully describe how I feel about Cake. It's fun. It's yum. It's the one. Go on a Saturday with a friend, camp out on their porch while swilling a free cup of tea. Although I wouldn't count on replicating our luck, we showed up midmorning last Saturday and were able to find an already made, delectable 6 inch birthday cake for a last-minute party. They even wrote the names on the top for us. Three days later, we are still reaping the rewards of that trip to Lexington. read more

HORRIBLE cakes. Even worse customer service. The cake was dry, overcooked, and did not match the description. This place seriously should go out of business or completely revamp their staff. Do yourself a favor. Don't even give them the time of day. read more

I've ordered many custom cake orders for family events and they have always been excellent! Great quality in design and taste. However, twice i have purchased cupcakes from the fridge and both times they have tasted old, very dry and indelible. Highly recommend for orders, but would suggest Cake not sell day old cupcakes and tarnish a great reputation! read more

We LOVE Cake.! It's the best cake and they are super nice and accommodating! We have been getting birthday cakes from here for years and a few times they even stayed open late when we were trapped at work. After cake tasting elsewhere, we have proof Cake. is just the best! We're debating driving a cake from Cake. across the country for our wedding and Michele is doing everything she can to make the process easy for us. That's how good it is! read more

Dec. 29 - this is the third time we've been here in the past few months and got STALE CUPCAKES. When they first opened, the cupcakes were fresh daily and the people were sweet as the food. They have decidedly gone downhill in both respects. Shame on you, Cake, for selling OLD STALE CUPCAKES. read more

As you walk in, the place smells great and the atmosphere is nice. You can even peek into the kitchen to see the cakes and cupcakes being carefully made. But the fun stopped there. We picked out 2 cupcakes to take home, including the "velvet carpet." They were priced on the high side so we expected something magnificent. The velvet cake itself was super dry and had absolutely no taste. The white cream on top tasted like plain cream cheese. The other cupcake was no better. On top of that, we felt queasy for the next several hours. I have to say that I have used yelp to find reviews for a long time, but only now did I feel the need to create an account to rate this place... the cupcakes were just that atrocious. read more

Just not my style - very heavy cupcakes. Carrot cupcake was moist enough to not be a belly bomber...

We are residents of Lexington, so this would be a natural place for us to buy cakes for special occasions on a regular basis. We are not, however, great planners, so on a few occasions, we dropped in and picked up a ready-made cake. More than once, however, the ready-made cakes were very, very dry, which was a shame. I think we've ordered ahead, and the cake was fine, but dryness appears to be a recurring issue for this shop, which is a shame. The decorations are first rate and the frosting is not too sweet - I believe that they use a high quality buttercream frosting. The cupcakes are generally fine too, and the kids enjoy them every now and then. Again, this baker seems to know what she's doing in baking the cakes, frosting, and decorating, but the dryness of the product is really a problem. I can get a very good Belgian chocolate cake from Stop & Shop for a fraction of the price which is consistently good. I wish she would get this issue resolved as we prefer to support local businesses that are not part of chains. read more

Cake has forced me to reevaluate my self image. I never thought I was one of those cupcake girls, in fact, I thought cupcakes were pretty overrated, and that cupcake stores were generally just mediocre bakeries with bad recipes for icing and cake, but...I can't stop thinking about Cake. A gentleman friend and I were taking the scenic route back to Boston after an obscenely huge dinner, and I mentioned I'd heard about a new bakery opening up. Since I used to work in a bakery, I love checking them out, so we stopped and decided to just go in and have a look. The man behind the counter was super friendly, greeted us immediately, and encouraged us to take as much time as we wanted just looking. The cakes looked great, they had a selection of large cupcakes and mini cupcakes, and all of them were beautiful. There aren't as many flavor offerings as some other cupcake shops, but they have the basic combinations of chocolate and vanilla, as well as several others like mocha, gingerbread, carrot cake, and berries and cream. They were on the cheap side, too, at only $2 for a large cupcake. Despite our skepticism about cupcakes and our hideously distended bellies from dinner, we couldn't resist the siren call of the glistening buttercream and came away with a few cupcakes which we devoured as soon as we got in the car. They were incredible. The cake was actually moist with a great crumb and the icing was delicious, though the coffee buttercream was on the sweet side. Their chocolate cupcakes are filled with a chocolate pastry cream that makes them structurally unstable, but sublime. When we finished the cupcakes we sat in the car for a while, looking guilty and quietly picking up crumbs, until my friend finally looked up and said: "you know, we could go back and-" "get more cupcakes? I was thinking the same thing" "yeah, it's right there..." "but we'd probably die if we ate anything else" "It might be worth it" read more

Used to like this place but I've called them at least 10 times this week and there has been no answer during business hours. You cannot leave a message either. I can't figure out if they just decided to close for the week or not. Seems very unprofessional that you would not change your voicemail if you chose not to be open. read more
