Must say this is a winner. if you haven't tasted these delicacies you must stop everything and go get yourself one. Our cake was for a school function and man-oh-man did we hit a home run. It was a piece of art (see pic). We ordered cup cakes but changed our order last minute and they adjusted our order - never complained or seemed frustrated with us - and they had every reason to be. Professional, super personable and great to deal with. We will keep coming back for more. Thanks for all your help. Seiza V. read more

Fabulous! They are still taking online orders amidst Covid-19 over e-mail. It was a pleasure working with them. I first saw some of their work on instagram (@cake_lexington) and it was soooo easy booking an order for a cake. They have incredibly beautiful cakes at an affordable price. A comparable glamour cake or impress cake at another local bakery would easily have been $40-50 more. You can also really tell that they take a lot of pride in their work, and everything tastes super fresh. I also asked for a few changes last minute (within 48 hours of pick up) and the staff was so amenable and didn't complain at all. I feel like this is such a hidden gem in Lexington and I'm so happy I discovered them. Will continue to order from them in the future! read more

If I could give Cake 100 stars, I would! The cakes are a work of art, Truly. If you want to tell somebody you love them to the moon but struggle to find the words, buy them a cake from Cake and they will know how much they mean to you, After all, that is the point of a cake! Went to Cake in Lexington today to purchase some of their cupcakes for a gift. I did not realize that they only do online orders now. Susan explained and then went out of her way to accommodate me anyway. Her kindness and generosity of spirit was wonderful. I have not had that kind of customer service probably ever. The cakes and cupcakes are delicious and don't need my review. Kudos to Susan, she even gave me a free cupcake! read more

This place gets so much love from me after one visit! These cupcakes are now the best I've ever had! I heard about this bakery opening and wanted to check it out but being in Lexington, it wasn't very close. Anyways I ended up making a trip to Burlington mall so decided this could be an easy stop along the way. I drove up to the outside, a lovely large historic home, even with a porch with tables to eat at. Upon entering, I see the cupcake chef in the kitchen busy at work frosting some plump cupcakes and adding fresh strawberries. Then a turn to the right is the sale area with lots of cupcakes behind the counter waiting to be eaten. The prices are extremely reasonable. $2 for a large full size cupcake and .75cents for a mini. There was even a little menu describing each flavor, the vibe was similar to Sweet but not as expensive! The store had hardwoods floors, big windows and even a fireplace. There was a small table to eat inside. Now to brag about the cupcakes: I tried 6 mini's I took to-go, which is almost all the flavors and was not let down by any of them. We are talking a cupcake boutique here. Home made mix, real butter cream frosting and flavorings carefully selected. Not the mass produced crap with shortening frosting. Standouts for me were the Red Velvet, Carrot Cake, Strawberry shortcake, and Vanilla/Choc frosting. I saw a very nicely decorated cake in the case for someones birthday and joked that my birthday was coming so I should order a cake like that. Then the nice man gave me a cupcake on the house for my upcoming birthday. How sweet! I ate the strawberry shortcake one outside on the porch. Divine! Even my boyfriend who thinks my cupcake addiction is crazy said these were the best he's ever tried. The owner also does very cool cakes and has an album out of her work. Speaking to the man in the cake area, I think her husband, he talked about how they got the business started. What nice people. I encourage anyone to go here and have the best cupcakes or get a special occasion cake! read more

I hate to break the solid 5 star rating, but I just wasn't as impressed with these cupcakes as everyone else seems to be. The shop had all of the things I look for in an awesome bakery: Charm - It is housed in an absolutely beautiful old Victorian. Character - It has an adorable logo and sign out front. Service - The man behind the counter was super friendly and accommodating. Selection - The cupcakes looked stunning in the case and there were a bunch to choose from. Price - At $2 a piece (or .75 cents for a mini) these cupcakes are very well priced. The only criteria I felt was lacking was Taste, and let me explain why. The red velvet cupcake was good, but it was totally overpowered by the heavy cream cheese frosting. I could barely taste the cake and had to remove most of the frosting to enjoy it. The carrot cake cupcake had delicious pineapple frosting, but the cake itself was dry. And finally, we come to the black tie cupcake - despite the tiny bit of boston cream inside, the cake was dry and crumbly and the rich chocolate frosting was delicious, but much too dense on top of this cupcake. Because I loved everything else about this place, I may give Cake another try to see if I simply chose the wrong flavors. But sadly, it would not be my go-to bakery for cupcakes. read more

Cake. Folks my father turned 70 this week. We celebrated last night and we had a surprise party planned. This is one of those moments where you just want everything to be just so and with that in mind for the perfect cake we turned to Michelle and Cake. My father loves chocolate cherries and that was the theme that developed, from the colors being red/chocolate brown on the invites and the balloons through to the cherry cordial favors. A few weeks ago we went to Michelle and with a vague idea bout wanting a cake that looked like a bowl of cherries and was a chocolate cake inside. Within a few minutes we had it all worked out, including the cherry butter cream filling with chopped cherries in it and all there was left to do was wait for the big day. Let me tell you that it was beautiful (I am uploading the picture). Not only was this a work of edible art, but it was as if it was plucked from my imagination and it was the most delicious cake I have ever eaten. From the dense yet moist chocolate cake, to the cherry butter cream filling to the rolled rice crispie treat fondant wrapped cherries on top - it was phenomenal. If you have that special occasion and you want everything to come out right and you need a cake then please save yourself one worry and visit Cake. ! read more

Have been craving for cupcakes for awhile and decided to give this place a try since we were already on Mass Ave. Bought an assortment of the regular cupcakes and the mini cupcakes. The minis were overpriced at $1 for the size of half my thumb. I was very disappointed with the quality of the cupcakes. The cakes themselves were very dry. Awful. But not as bad as the overly too-sweet lump of icing on top. The man that helped us was very nice though and threw in a free mini-cupcake. Too bad I didn't end up eating it. read more

My wife's cousin ordered a birthday cake from here last week. Great quality for $40. Ordered the minute man, strawberry filling. The decorations were done very well. The flowers were very detailed and the butter cream was very smooth. Cake tasted very good too. Cupcake were good and well priced. However, I still like Sprinkles cupcakes more. Then again, this is more than $1 cheaper then Sprinkles. I think the cupcakes would have been better if they were not refrigerated. They could work a bit on the customer service, being a bit more friendly. Parking might be a little difficult. read more

For the past 7 years I have not had to bake a cake and in my family we are all good cooks and foodies. This place is a hidden gem . It is my favorite place in the world to get cupcakes and high quality exquisite birthday cakes . You pay a bit more yet it's totally worth it . Susan the owner is a doll - i can tell wedding Cakes is her specialty cause my daughter asked for something fancy last time and she delivered ! -wholesome ingredients Nut free and gluten free It's located in the center of town but to the side diagonally to Cary hall so there is usually street parking and when not I can get on their driveway and park on their back parking lot . As a caterer, I'm always looking for better and more reliable vendors. I stumbled upon Cake online last week after my previous nut free vendor was not able to provide what we needed. With 1 phone call, we were all set for 60 cupcakes delivered to our kitchen today. They arrived perfectly on time with gorgeous looking cupcakes AND a small sample box for my staff of some of their flavors (these have been demolished or we'd send pictures)! We try a lot of desserts here, perk of the job, and I have to say these are some of the best we've had. The flavor combinations are great and they're so moist! We've had such a problem with dried out overly sweet cupcakes with vendors that this is a much needed refreshment! 5 stars from the whole staff and a promise that we will be ordering again! read more

We knew wanting a non-traditional wedding cake would involve finding the right baker who was willing to work with us to achieve what we wanted. We found cake at a tasting we went to and went to meet with (then-owner) Michelle who was excited to work with us to create what we wanted. We signed papers with her and it was not until months later, when trying to get in contact with her, we found out the bakery had been sold. We went in to meet with the new owner and from a tiny, grainy picture we gave the old owner she created a sample of the cake we wanted. This grew our confidence in her and we were excited to get to work with her. We had a few other phone exchanges and went in at least once more to meet with Susan and something gave us a feeling that something was not quite right. But we put our confidence in Susan to deliver what we wanted. Susan called the day before our wedding to confirm the time of the cake delivery; maybe she was pulling through. When we saw what was delivered it looked NOTHING like the sample she made us. There were way fewer pieces than we had signed a contract for, there were other assorted cut cakes and cupcakes - not at all what we asked for. We had no choice but to accept what was delivered. Our guests, who did not know what the cake was supposed to look like, said everything tasted great. We agree, the cake did taste fantastic. But it was nothing like it was supposed to look like. A few days after the event we called Susan to discuss our disappointment. She got very defensive very quickly, pulling out every excuse in the book as to why she delivered what she did and how we should have been happy with the results. Towards the end of the call she asked what we were looking for, in which we responded a refund. She yelled "FINE" and then proceeded to hang up on us. From there we opened a claim with our credit card company. They called Susan on our behalf, from which we received another phone call from Susan. She yelled at us again, getting very defensive about what she delivered to us. After a very uncomfortable back and forth she finally agreed to a 50% refund, on which we are still waiting to see on our credit card. If your gut says something is wrong, something is wrong. We wanted to have faith in Susan and trust she was going to deliver what she said she would but she didn't. Our exchanges with her were very uncomfortable and we would not take our business back to her under any circumstances. read more

I struggle to find enough superlatives to describe our beautiful wedding cake. Susan and the Cake team did an amazing job, creating the cake from a drawing and a few ideas we had. Susan checked in with me multiple times to try out various ideas and flavor choices (so yummy!), but even with those check-ins we were delightfully surprised when we saw the full creation on the day. It was gorgeous! And then...the taste! Saying that it was absolutely delicious does not do this exceptionally wonderful cake justice. Moist and perfect. We were beyond happy. I will certainly return to Susan and the Cake team in the future. Thank you! read more

Bought 3 cupcakes. All were really dry, and tasted like they were made a few days ago.

I'm generally not a cupcake fan. Seriously. When it comes to desserts I like cookies, brownies, bars, etc. Cupcakes (and regular cakes) aren't my thing as frosting generally doesn't appeal to me. We went to cake. last night for a post dinner dessert. One of my friends loves cupcakes so we decided to check them out since we were eating in Lexington. We walked in and the place is small but the selection was bigger than expected. We had a coupon to buy five and get one free, so we all picked out two and shared them. The Minuteman with the fresh strawberries was easily my favorite. Don't go there without trying one of them. We also tried a double chocolate, a raspberry filled, coconut, a traditional vanilla with chocolate frosting and one that was like boston cream with a thick chocolate ganache like frosting and a cream filling. The man who rung us up was really pleasant and the woman came out of the bakery section to also see if we needed help. We asked for napkins (since we saw a mess in our future) and were told that not only were there napkins on the little table on the way out, but there were also cupcake samples. Yum! It was there I tried the red velvet and was wishing I had gotten on. At $2 a piece I think these are well priced, they also have minis at just 75 cents! As much as I would swear I'm not a cupcake person, I have a feeling I'm going to be back. Luckily I brought two home for my husband and now I'm just secretly hoping he shares. read more

Bliss!! Parking on the street! So many cute cupcakes. I'll take 4. How can the lady be so cranky? She makes cupcakes for chrissakes. Would a smile kill grumpalumpagus? Whatev. I take my treasures and go home to wait the highlight of my day. The frosting is a tad sweet for me but consistency is nice, smooth. On to the critical portion: the cupcake. This can't be right. So...doorstop like. Hard, brittle, not a crumb to be found. Awful, dry, inedible. The Chocolate Madness was nice & moist. 1 for 4 is not a good ratio for gourmet cupcakes with grumpy lady at the counter. Very disappointing. read more

It is never ok to give out stale cupcakes to people and that is what I got here. The shop is cute, nice staff, reasonable prices, and it is nice that they carry mini cupcakes so you can sample the flavors without spending a fortune. The frosting on the three mini cupcakes I tried was good but the cakes were stale and kinda hard. The thing is you can feel through the wrapper when cupcakes are hard like that so why do so many shops give them out anyway. A lack of quality control is a no go for me. This was early afternoon also. I appreciate someone from the business taking the time to reply, but you may want to skip insulting the intelligence of your customers. I DID let it go to room temperature, which is why the frosting was good and soft. It was all quite warm when I ate it. Not every bakery keeps their cupcakes in the fridge, for good reason. It is common knowledge that refridgeration contributes to cake going stale, always has, even more so when it is not airtight and you keep opening the door to get cupcakes out. The places that keep them out in a case in small batches are much better. I don't doubt they are made the same day but it doesn't take long. We all know the difference in the bakeries that have stale pastries at 4pm and the ones that make sure they never do even at 8pm. By midday stuff gets stale and needs to be replaced with fresh stuff. Maybe keep more of the cakes airtight somewhere and not in the fridge. Doing that at home has always worked. I love cupcakes so much they get their own list, and I'm telling you the cake was not soft by any definition and therefore not good, at room temperature. I didn't even finish them as they were basically dry muffins, so lets skip the excuses. Multiple people are telling you the cake is dry, at least sometimes, but clearly we don't know what we are talking about. Definitely won't be back now read more

The cake was very pretty and unique but you can't judge a cake by its cover, apparently. It wasn't moist and was way too sweet for my liking. My mom said it reminded her of Sara Lee poundcake from the market but the store bought stuff tastes much better. I had half the cake left and the whole thing toppled over. Eh, might as well, no one else was going to eat it. Okay so we happened to have gotten a groupon or living social or eversave (one of those) AND it happened to have fallen on tax free weekend, but did you have to increase the price because of that?! At least erase it and not cross it out so I won't know! read more

I drove up from Boston specifically to visit the Cake. bakery for their cupcakes as I saw a Groupon, read about Cake. online -- how they've baked cupcakes for Hollywood -- and was very interested in sampling. I bought 12 cupcakes. Boy, it sure wasn't worth the drive. Cupcake: Dry, small compared to the overly sweet, heavy, and overwhelming frosting. I've tried thus far the chocolate ganache/chocolate flourless cupcake -- which had a big hole in the middle from uneven baking; the pineapple cream cheese frosting/carrot cake cupcake (not bad); and a coconut cupcake. The worst was the coconut cupcake -- cake was dry throughout. I'm not looking forward to the rest of the dozen. read more

Take this review with a grain of salt, as my experience with Cake. is from 2 years ago (just getting around to updating my yelp with some old reviews) The good: Excellent premade cakes and cupcakes in the fridge. I've tried probably a half dozen different flavors and loved them all. This shop does a great job incorporating fresh fruit into their cupcakes. The raspberry is extra raspberry-y, the lemon is really lemon-y. the chocolate ganache is heavenly. And, visiting the shop is as sweet as their products. Like stepping into a Mary Englebreit drawing. So cute. The bad: They screwed up our wedding cake. We ordered our wedding cake from here because they were one of the few places willing to do buttercream design and flowers instead of fondant and hard sugar. It was important to us to have a cake that was 100% edible (fondant and sugar paste flowers need to be peeled off before the cake is served). We were very specific in person and put our request in writing. Unfortunately, on the day of our wedding we arrived at the reception to find a fondant and sugar paste flowered cake :( We complained after the wedding and received an apology and voucher from Cake. Unfortunately, this was our wedding cake, so there's not much that can be done after the fact to make up for not having the cake we ordered. I understand that mistakes happen, and Cake's response to our complaint was exactly as it should've been (if, a bit slow. we often got the feeling that Cake is handling more business than they can really accomodate with their small staff). But, judging from the other Yelp reviews, it looks like inattention to detail in filling out wedding orders is a pattern for this business. It's possible this is no longer an issue (like I said, our wedding was 2 years ago), but if in dealing with them you get the feeling they are too busy to give adequate attention to your order, run. I would still recommend this bakery for a regular cupcake or cake order because their products are beautiful and tasty. If you're in the neighborhood you owe it to yourself to stop in and try their strawberry shortcake cupcake "The Minuteman." They're a great choice for a birthday cake or a special treat. However, think long and hard before you order a once-in-a-lifetime product that you have your heart set on being a particular way. read more

Great little cupcakes, cakes, and free candies by the register to get you in a cheerful mood. We tried three of the petite cupcakes, and were very happy - and spending only $0.75 each made it even sweeter! Cake is a terrific place for sampling wedding cakes (I'm sure you have to call in advance), creating a custom birthday cake, or picking up a dozen treats for a baby or bridal shower. The folks who work there are super friendly and eager to please. There are steps to get up to the entrance, so be prepared for that. Also, there aren't any tables to sit at inside, so Cake is more of a grab-and-secretly-devour-in-your-car kind of place. It looked like there were patio tables for warmer months... Not sure if they sell coffee there, but it would be a welcome addition. read more

I gave this place a couple of tries and I really want to like it since it is conveniently on my commute home from work. However, I have to agree that while the cupcakes are beautiful and the icing is good, the cakes are extremely dry, particularly the chocolate. I recently had a seasonal cupcake that was some sort of apple/caramel/maple combo and the frosting was DELICIOUS. But upon pulling the paper off the cupcake, it crumbled all over the place and made it difficult to eat. It seems a little tweak in the cake-baking process might help with the dryness - hopefully they will sort it out so I can become a regular customer! read more

Last week my daughter and I popped into Cake on a whim. Turn right as you go in, and you'll find a tiny room and a wall of cupcakes. We were invited to have a look rather than study a menu -- which totally changed our strategy. Rather than one decently sized cupcake, we went for three tiny cupcakes in different favors. We stopped on the porch (there are maybe three tables) and dug in. I can't say enough good about these wee little cakes. Perfectly baked, perfectly decorated, perfect frosting/cake ratio. Cakes were flavorful, moist, great crumb. Frosting was beautifully flavored, great mouth-feel. I had Berries and Gold, Pucker-Up Buttercup (lemony goodness), and a chocolate whose name escapes me (not mocha). My daughter had the lemon, Mocha Express, and Black Tie Affair and agreed they were among the best we've had in Eastern Mass. Staff were warm and friendly and glad to help. While we were sitting and flailing over the tasty goodness a man came out with two little bottles of Poland Spring -- thoughtful! read more

This is my go-to place in a pinch when I forget I need to bring something to a party. Cannot go wrong with any of the cupcake flavors and the mini cupcakes are just the right size. At a party, they go fast! I was really impressed that they had gluten free cupcakes available for those gluten free guests- who you are racking your brain to find something pre-made and edible for. pparently they have chocolate and vanilla Gluten free- for vanilla you have to make a special request-, but chocolate was available without pre-planning. Regardless the gluten free cupcakes are apparently tasty. Everyone is happy! read more

Update! With a week's notice (sorry Michelle!) I ordered a surprise groom's cake for 40 people. My husband and I are obsessed with our cat so after much thought I decided to get him a cat cake! Michelle has never met or seen our big boy and went off of 2 pictures I have that I love. What she came up with was so life-like that when it was being cut into and devoured - our guests were screaming "don't hurt it!!!". The groom was surprised and delighted with her work. She charges ridiculously low rates for such a massive work of art. She was putting the finishing touches on his "ears" as I arrived to pick it up so I know it was fresh. The inside was gold cake with fresh whipped cream and strawberries which all our guests went gaga over on a warm spring night. The pictures don't lie - check it out. read more

Absolutely delicious! As you walk up the stairs to enter the victorian home-turned-bake shop, you're greeted by an intoxicating aroma of vanilla. Breathe deep: it's a calorie-free way to get your cupcake fix. But why stop there when there's a bevy of lovely cupcakes on the other side of the door? The retail side is outfitted with a tall refrigerator containing trays and trays of cupcakes, big and small. The friendly gentleman behind the counter will give you all the need-to-know info about the day's cupcake selection. At 75 cents apiece, I went with a half-dozen petite cupcakes. I'm usually not a fan of chocolate cake, but the chocolate cake (with chocolate frosting) was my favorite of the bunch. What stood out most is that the cake actually tasted like chocolate! Prior to this, most chocolate cakes I've had simply tasted like "brown." (I may have to rethink my stance on chocolate cake after this!) I savored these dainty treats over a two-day period--and the second-day cupcakes were definitely a bit dry. The frosting on the mocha cupcake had a slightly odd texture (almost merengue-like), but that could be because I was eating it a full day-plus after it was made. I can't wait to give this place another visit--and treat myself to a full-size cupcake (and maybe sample another mini cupcake flavor or two). I have no doubt that a five-star update is in the near future. :-) read more
