    Chicken

The food was just okay. The biscuit was at 100%. I wanted two chicken legs. He automatically put two huge pieces of breast in my plate. I was pissed they didn't tell me they were out. I would have changed my mind. My husband felt like chicken wasn't very flavorful. The mashed potato and gravy was very plain, corn totally flavorless, coleslaw not bad and Mac and cheese was creamy but slightly flavorless.

I ordered 12 pieces of chicken - half spicy, half not spicy. The chicken was not made-to-order, at least not for me. The spicy was not very spicy but the chicken was crispy and juicy. I didn't think the chicken had enough flavor. Even with the 3 stars, I would still give them another try.

I came in Saturday afternoon after passing Chick-fil-A in Novi (line is still stupidly long) and was the only customer there. Looks like it was during a crew change. They had a lot of chicken that was pre-made, I'm guessing my order wasn't because it took 10 minutes. This was their #4? (could be wrong on the number) It was $9. My optimism as a first time customer was utterly destroyed when I went home to watch college football, opened the box, and saw this. Maybe Chicken Fingers isn't their thing. I don't know I was pretty disappointed with the lack of fries, biscuit that was rock hard. Honestly you're better off eating Wendy's.

This place was serving hot chicken before hot chicken was a thing. They have unbelievable gumbo and the biscuits are top notch.

The tables on the side of the building are not as exciting as the seating at the front of the building. Our waiter had such an energetic vibe and was very polite. We had water within a minute of sitting down. Our order was very fast. Easily within 10 minutes. Very impressive! I loved the southern fried chicken with the mashed sweet potatoes. Their cornbread was so moist and had a nice flavor. The breading on the chicken was perfectly cooked and had a nice sweet flavor. We decided on the bread pudding for dessert which was easily a shareable item. So much flavor and wasn't too overly sweet with the candied pecans and sweet drizzle topping. Flavor was very well balanced.

We had some vidalia onion dip for an appetizer which had a good flavor. My entree was the cajun shrimp and grits. It has been a long time since I have had this dish from a restaurant done well enough to like. It was delicious. My only complaint is that the shrimp come tail-on... i know thats a thing these days, but ive never liked it. Anyways - the greens were tasty, the cornbread was good, and main portion.... delectable. We sat on the patio area. There was a nice breeze, and we joked about some of the people being scared of the sunlight because it was a bit darker inside.... Great food, great experience.

From the outside, the building doesn't exactly scream "5-star seafood" -- I think it may have been an old Pizza Hut -- but don't let that fool you. The salads are huge, but they are very onion forward, so just a heads up if onions aren't your thing. Shrimp comes piled on top of some dishes and you can add or remove it. Also worth noting, nothing is overly spicy, just solid flavor that doesn't knock you out. Service: The staff is genuinely kind and super accommodating. You can tell it's family owned. Everyone seems to care and wants you to enjoy your meal. Ambiance: The space is cute and Creole themed. It's cozy, casual. Easy 5 stars for me, this place is a gem and I'll keep coming back for sure.

The…read moreinterior has been remodeled and looks great, love the dark layout and the huge dining room, however the food remains touch and go. Certain dishes are great, others not. Got a huge bread basket that looked empty, when peering in, two small pieces of stale french bread smothered in Saran wrap were visible. Shame all that wasted space. C'mon Gumbo. Don't skimp on the bread. Serve it fresh too! During past dining experiences, the fried shrimp and hushpuppies were much larger. During this visit they were midget sized, like they were "cooking to a price point". That said, Gumbo's always excelled at frying and they tasted great. The fried catfish was dredged in cornmeal and flour. It tasted as good as catfish can taste, considering slimy-stank taste is natural to a bottom feeder and next to impossible to cook out. If you like catfish, gather up a chair, you're in the right place. The gumbo was watery with small dices of sausage and more midget shrimp. The broth had little taste. Mediocre gumbo is a misdemeanor violation. I wrote Gumbo's a ticket on that one. The cajun pasta was very good. In the old days they used bowtie pasta in a thick creamy sauce smacked with Cajun decadence and big ole' shrimps. Today they used penne (not a big deal, but it cheapens the dish) in a disappointly watery sauce with a few midget shrimp. It still tasted good but it quite clear at this point Gumbo's was cooking to a price point. The STAR OF THE SHOW was the shrimp crawfish etouffee. Wow! Thick, creamy, rich gravy with a heavenly base of toasted roux having notes of roasted peanut. They got that one right, midget shrimps and all. I want another bowl NOW! DIATRIBE ALERT: Service wasn't terrible but far from exceptional. The new generation of wait staff expects big tips for mediocre service, like we should should be honored by their presence. I always tip large despite my general grumpiness. Problem is, tipping culture has gotten out of hand. It's become a bottomless pit of greed. Front and back staff with their hands out perpetually. Cash registers programmed to induce tip guilt. Dirty looks for not tipping a carry-out order. CARRY-OUT RULES: If I don't sit down to eat, I ain't tipping your ass. Go back to Nursing School or something like that. Why should the customer pick up the slack for an industry refusing to pay employees a decent wage? SUMMARY: Love the vibe. Like the food. Gumbo's was clearly cooking to a price point. Midget shrimp? Sacriledge. New Orleans ain't like that.

Unexpectedly they asked if we wanted them to split the meals for us and serve one of each meal on a single plate. Top notch service. The restaurant was filled with other families but was not extremely loud and overall was a comfortable atmosphere As for the food, we had the house bread & butter, crispy fried Brussels sprouts appetizer, Parmesan crusted whitefish and Rib Eye Steak with Stillwater Salad & Caesar salad The house bread came fresh and was warm. It was the perfect balance of a warm fluffy cloud with a little crunch and perfect amount of salt. The brussel sprouts were excellently presented with balsamic vinaigrette glaze and fresh Parmesan cheese grated over it. The Brussels sprouts were a tad bitter for my taste and I think would benefit from a more sweet glaze to balance out the bitterness. Overall still enjoyable Our entrees came with a choice of a salad each. We had the Caesar and Stillwater grill salad. The Caesar salad had homemade dressing and was extremely fresh and crunchy. It was overall very tasty. The Stillwater grill salad came with a honey-cider Dijon vinaigrette which I got on the side. I personally didn't like the flavor of the vinaigrette but my husband did. Instead I got a side of honey mustard which paired much better with the salad and significantly elevated the flavor. We got the Ribeye steak medium cooked. It was very juicy and flavorful. It came with a side of mashed potatoes and broccolini which were both exceptionally flavored and well seasoned. The Parmesan crusted whitefish was also perfectly cooked. The fish was moist and the Parmesan added a subtle crunch. The fish could use a little more salt but that's my personal opinion. The lemon caper butter sauce tied all the flavors together for a complete dish that was enjoyable. It also came with a side of rice and green beans which were also good Overall we had a great experience. All this food came up to $80. For such a wonderful experience we couldn't ask for a better price
