The environment at Cai's is super cozy and chill, great to get work done or meet up with friends. The coffee isn't very good and often tastes burnt but the pastries and food are great! The caprese toast is a favorite of mine as well as any of their muffins. Stick to the food, not the coffee. Great tea selection and I recommend their teas over their coffee. read more

A welcome addition to the Metuchen downtown. A real coffee shop, a bit on the hip side. Coffee was wonderful. I had a muffin which was good, too. I haven't tried the other offerings, but I will next time I'm in town and with more time. All the over 80 crowd was across the street..hehe. The only reasons I didn't give it five stars is because I think they could offer more pastry items for breakfast and the lighting is just a shade too dark. Still, I hope the place does well. Cai's is a cozy corner cafe where you can get together with friends, family or spend time there by yourself working or playing on their free wifi all while enjoying something delicious off the coffee and tea menu. The central focus is a beautiful fireplace with comfy couches where I have witnessed a knitting group, young people chatting while sipping coffee or wine and others reading books from the book exchange shelf. Cai's is a small family owned business that supports other small businesses as well, inviting pop-up shops in to promote their products. I've been here twice now and had a good experience both times. Definitely try a drink called "hot shot" and you can't go wrong with their cold brew either. I ordered my cold brew with a shot of hazelnut and it was perfect. It can get busy at times (always a good sign) but there's plenty of seating options so no worries. The second time I went, I was even able to catch some live entertainment. This place just screams cozy neighborhood coffee shop, and it has a great vibe! read more

Went for the first time today. They ignored us for awhile then came when the line started to pile up. Ordered a smoothie and coffee. I couldn't even order the smoothie I wanted cause they were out of ingredients. Then, they forgot the coffee that I ordered. im looking at other peoples reviews and I feel like they are either paid to give them a good review or they are just way too generous with this place. I'm going to start with the drinks the I ordered the chai tea it was nasty it was the nastiest thing I have ever had the guy poured it out this cartoon thing with some soy milk and it was jus nasty I literally through out. My date ordered hot chocolate and I just don't know how could make it taste awful but they managed to do so. After a while we we sat some where else on the comfy chair and the im guessing she is the owner and she came as she was cleaning and started talking to us as she is cleaning the place and then around 10 pm she told us the place was closing down and that we can come tomorrow while she went and sat down with other customers and the rest of the customers remained inside. honestly I wouldn't recommend this place. Quant coffee shop (with plenty of room) in the heart of Metuchen. The staff was so friendly and quick, and there was a great vibe to the entire place. They carry all different coffee blends - I personally got the Costa Rican and it was delish. I got a large and it was under $3. They have food in addition to coffee ( I didn't taste but it smelt great), Free WiFi and not to mention great background music! As someone passing through, I will definitely stop by next time I'm in town. They have a great rewards program, every 7th coffee you order is free. The couches were also super comfortable. If it wasn't for the large coffee I got I would have probably fell asleep! read more

This is the worst food I've eaten in years. Avocado toast is two ingredients - how do you screw that up? The caprese sandwich being served is NOT a caprese sandwich. A toasted slice of wheat bread, soaked in red wine vinegar, topped with an unwrapped square of "mozzerella" cheese and a slice of tomato is not a caprese sandwich, Avocado toast is not a toasted slice of wheat bread, squirted with gross guacamole out of a plastic container. I'm so impressed with what a great space Cai's built in our community (and is committed to building more community by allowing groups to use the space). My husband and I visited Cai's Cafe yesterday morning for the first time. We had been wanting to come in for a while after reading the great reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a try. It's a cute little cafe and we really wanted to like this place. My husband ordered a cappuccino and an apple turnover, warmed. He said the cappuccino was good, but the apple turnover was just ok. I'm a tea kind of gal, so I ordered a chai tea latte and a chocolate croissant, also warmed. I have to say, the chai tea was severely lacking. It was room temperature (which was my biggest complaint), too foamy and the flavor was just ok. It also needed some sweetening up. I added raw sugar, which helped some. There was also a good inch of space left in my cup between the foam and the top of the cup, which made me feel kinda short changed. As for the chocolate croissant, it was just ok as well. Not sure if they normally offer more of a selection of baked goods, but when we were there (around 10:15 a.m.) all they had were a few different types of big cookies, lots of chocolate croissants and one apple turnover. An assortment of muffins and sweet breads, such as banana bread, pumpkin bread, marble loaf, etc. would have been nice. I don't think we will be back again. read more

Such a great addition to Metuchen's Main St! They are so friendly and kind. I walked past with my stroller and my dog, and they happily waved us all in, and even gave my pup a doggie treat. So I just happen to be walking around town waiting for my friend to finish getting his clothes tailored and I saw this place and I loved their coffee! I got their After Dark roast and had it with black cherry flavor and it was great, no sugar or cream, I drank it black and it was just great. The people that own it are also incredibly chill and super welcoming. They will even guide you through their menu and even talk about where their products are from and how they make and serve their products. I was glad I happened to find this place. It is an incredibly comfortable place to just have a seat and drink your coffee. The place itself looked very homey and their lighting was very warm and cozy. The atmosphere is great, the staff is friendly and the coffee is pretty good. I would definitely take people here just to hangout sometime. This is my first ever Yelp review and I just felt like I had to write it because I just really enjoyed my cup of coffee here. read more

The cashiers were awesome and the coffee was good, but probably won't be coming back based on the brunch food. I ordered directly from their menu (no changes or substitutions) and was given a different item. I probably would have just let it go, but my food was undercooked in the middle. Not a safety issue, but definitely weird and unpleasant. They were happy to remake the food but when I ended up with the food I'd actually ordered, it was even more undercooked (less cooked?). Ended up just bringing it home so I could cook it myself. It's unfortunate because the vibe of the place was good, but when I pay for food to be cooked, the expectation is that it is cooked. read more

If I could split my review into sections for ambiance and for coffee, the ambiance would get a 5. This is the perfect little coffee shop to get some work done or hang out with friends. There is ample comfortable seating and the decor is a hipster's dream. For all of these reasons I wanted Cai's to be my new go to coffee shop. Unfortunately, the coffee is disappointing. I tried both drip coffee and an americano and both were overly bitter and no real redeeming qualities aside from being a vector to get caffeine into my body. I think if I drank my coffee with milk and sugar I think I would like Cai's much more, so the good reviews here don't surprise me. I had been dying to try this place. I went for the first time today and ordered a hazelnut cappuccino and it was so heavy that it tasted more like a latte. I could barely taste the hazelnut. The place is cute, the staff was friendly but I was disappointed in the coffee. It was annoying that the place was packed with half of the people there not drinking coffee, but instead bringing ice cream from another establishments and taking up seats. I wanted to buy coffee and relax but could not find a table to sit and relax, until I asked a girl if someone was sitting in the chair next to her so I can pull it near the bar to sit with my hubby. It is annoying when people just hawk the place and are not even having any drinks/food from the establishment, it is not fair for those who want to come in and pay for coffee and relax. A really great place! It's very cozy and welcoming atmosphere with a lot of seating. There's a small library in the corner where you can sip your coffee, relax, and read. It's a great place to get work done or just hanging out and talking to friends. The staff is friendly and had great service. Also, free wifi. I love their brownies; their cookie was ok. I like their cappuccino and hot chocolate. Sometimes they add too much ice on their cold drinks. Overall the coffee, treats, and ambiance of this cafe is great! read more

I live in Metuchen, and have driven by this spot and decided to try it out, but was strangely disappointed. I arrived around 1pm on a Tuesday afternoon, and found a few people sitting at tables and a few more crowded around the one menu by the cash register. I went up to the counter, assuming I could order lunch, but there were no menus. I did see some on the tables in the room, so walked over and found they only listed wines - sold by the bottle & half bottle, but no food was listed. The only food I saw was a couple of muffins-- nothing else (no one was eating, just having coffee, tea at the tables). So I ordered an espresso (at this point, I figured it was only a beverage restaurant). There wasn't any sugar offered, nor a spoon with the cup, so I just drank my coffee. I'm surprised by some of the reviews listing food, as where did they find the offerings ?? Would I come back ?... probably not as the espresso was just ok, nothing memorable. read more

Today I decided to try Cai's Cafe as a way to kill some time. So walking into the business my first impression was your typical hang out place. A flea market find sofa and chairs, out of date books and loud K Rock music playing. I thought it was suppose to be a quiet place to relax, read and catch up on the web. Anyhow, being that it was a warm day I decided to go with a banana peanut butter smoothie. After ordering I was informed by the worker that there were no BANANAS. How can you have something on the menu and not have the ingredients to make it. No sorry just a stare by her. So I decided to go with a mixed berry smoothie instead. I paid and you would think the worker would make my drink but nope she takes the guy behind me order and makes his drink. What happened to first come first served. After she took care of him she then made my order. I was given my drink,no straw,and the worker disappeared. How do you drink a smoothie with no straw. After she returned and I asked for a straw it became a game of where they were located on a shelve. She provide no assistance at all. After all of this I finally got to my drink and wow DISAPPOINTING not very good at all. I sat for a while in this loud atmosphere only to see dirt/crumbs all over the floor.
