Very cool concept, albeit confusing at first. Brunch is available Friday-Sunday and it is priced at a sliding scale, from 9 to 13 euro, you pay what you can afford. There is usually a line right when it starts at 11am, you grab a plate and bowl and then you're free to go up to the vegan/vegetarian buffet as many times as you'd like from 11am to 3pm. It is crowded and finding a table is difficult, which is why it is recommended to go right at 11 or maybe once the initial crowd heads out around 1 or 2. Lots of dips and bean pastes, marinated tofu, tofu scramble, vegan chocolate mousses, breads and (non vegan) cheeses, fruits, yogurts, etc. Really cute area as well! read more

Cafe Morgenrot is such an interesting place, namely because it's such an alternative location situated in the middle of the tourist-y, family friendly, somewhat snotty Kastanienallee. During the day, it's an unremarkable-looking cafe, but great for grabbing some vegan treats and coffee and chatting with a friend. I also enjoy it for morning or mid-day band interviews. During occasional evenings (once every month or two) it's also a concert venue where local and semi-obscure hardcore and punk rock bands play. Of course, the big draw is the weekend brunch, which is calculated on a sliding scale of 5-9 euros, asking people to pay what they can and feel comfortable with. That aspect of it is pretty great in my mind. Now and again, I suggest brunch here with veg friends and they all walk away full and impressed. Of course, I don't think this is the best vegan brunch in town, namely because maybe 60-75% of the things are vegan and the rest are vegetarian, and I just like to be able to go somewhere and eat everything on the menu without thought (is that selfish?)... It is also made up of relatively generic vegan brunch foods so if you are looking for fancy or innovative noms, look elsewhere. However, do not overlook the vegan chocolate mousse (unless, of course, I am there, in which case you should let me have all of it) because it is super delicious and you will love it and want seconds, and then when you go for seconds it will be gone. As mentioned by others, it gets packed, quick. Arrive at or before the opening time of 11, and stake out your table right away, or else you will be SOL for the next hour or two when the crowd starts to thin out. read more

I came here on my trip to Europe by recommendation of a Berliner local and it proved to be my favorite restaurant in all of Europe. And I'm not even a vegetarian! Actually, before this place, I had a FEAR of eating vegan and vegetarian food. Everything served at this place was incredible and the atmosphere was the first place I finally felt comfortable and "at home". Plus it was my first place I finally got a decent cup of tea! We are really excited to have vegertarian breakfast hereit is so hard to get a free seat here as it is always so crowded. It is such a paradise to vegetarians as here they offer a large collecton (6 flavors) of tasty paste that serve with bread. Spicy tofu prepared by them is very tasty (soy sauce and herbs like rosemary)also tasty salad, joghurt, cheese, fruits is only 7-9 euros for the breakfast! The staff are a little gruff, the place is a little creaky and 'bohemian', but, my goodness, the brunch is a force to be reckoned with. Oh, the spreads and cheeses of all varieties! Oh, the assortment of delicious and crusty breads! Oh, the salads and couscous dishes and pastas, galore! Oh, the vegan scrambled 'eggs' (this one deserves a line of its own)! Oh, the amount of fresh fruit heaped neatly on a large serving plate! Oh, the cereals, granola, and other sweet 'breakfasty' items available! We love this place and always make sure to come at least once when we are in Berlin. The food is very nice and the staff is friendly. Almost everything is vegan and there is lots of lovely spreads, marinated and scrambled tofu, porridge, salads and fruits. The concept of paying what you can afford is also great. I recommend everyone that has a chance to go here. It can be really busy on weekends so go on a friday or make sure to come early to get a table. read more

Brunch there is a joke, just a few things, and if this is vegan, then I'm sorry for all the vegans who eat such a bad diet. I was expecting a lot of vegetables&fruit, basically non processed healthy stuff. It was definitely the worst brunch when it comes to quality. Plus the staff is extremely rude. I went here for the sunday vegan/veggie brunch that spans from 11am-3pm. The cafe is a left-winged and also organizes various other left activities like concerts, movie nights and stammtische. I must say that the brunch was delicious and the staff really nice. I especially like the concept of the brunch, which I have prior seen at bars, where you basically pay based on what you can afford, €7 (-/+ €2). The idea is to not pay based on what you ate rather based on what you can afford, so that having brunch is not a luxury rather something for everybody. Also, the brunch is extensive with bread, dips, salad, tofu scrambled eggs, etc.. and the atmosphere is nice. It does get really crowed so best is either to come right when it opens at 11am or what until about 1/1:30pm to not have to wait too long for a table. read more

BEWARE UNHINGED SERVER The bar is adequate enough for a drink or evening out but I had the misfortune of being served by the most odious and offensive server I've ever experienced. He spilled a beer on my coat which I admit, can happen in the best of places. The trouble began when i asked him to bring me something to clean it with. He refused to take responsibility but with contempt, he threw me a used bar towel which was completely inadequate. His attitude became foul when I again asked for a clean cloth. He then began to lecture me that 'this is a bar in Berlin" as if I should expect this kind of attitude and poor quality service. He flew into a rage and used the F word at least 7 times. The man demanded I leave the bar...as if i was the one behaving badly. None of the other servers came to offer their help. I found this very disturbing. They knew what had occurred and evidently wanted no part of it. This man is unhinged and unprofessional.. his abusive behaviour was intolerable under any circumstance. Beware of being served by this idiotic and unprofessional creature. It seems the whole establishment condones this sort of behaviour If you have any kind of dispute there will be no 'manager' to sort things out as this is a co-op. I would advise anyone to avoid it like the plague. There are too many great places in this wonderful city. read more

Slightly overrated. I went there for Sunday brunch after I read a few good bits about this place. It was laud and overcrowded, with people constantly passing by our table to and from the buffet, so we can't really relax over our meals. As for vegetarian, the food was also slightly disappointing. You can choose between sweet (natural yoghurt, cereals, fruit) and savoury: bread (fresh and tasty), vegan butter, cheese, tomatoes, 2 salads and vegan scrambled eggs nothing special really. The things that make up for it though are the spreads. Good selection and interesting combinations of ingredients gave strong flavours to my not very sophisticated cheese and tomato sandwich. But don't let yourself be tricked with the 'pay-what-you-like. The menu says 'you can pay anything between 5 and 9 euro. However, at the time of payment you get a receipt with an exact price of 7 euro for the breakfast (not including drinks). And when I asked about the 'pay-what-you-like' offer, the girl behind the counter suddenly started to pretend she doesn't understand my English, and after 3rd attempt, she said: 'Yessss but' giving me a look of discontent strong enough to make me understand that as a tourist I should just pay what I'm told and leave... read more

Brunch is exceptional. Regardless, if you are vegetarian or not, you'll love it. All sorts of bread spreads, starting with bean paste ending with avocado cream, salads, fruit and interesting vegetarian/vegan sweet table, chocolate cream with almonds is my fav. Some say the range is not wide enough, but for me it's got everything one can dream of. And it's healthy. Curious pricing policy, you can pay for brunch anywhere from 6 to 11 euros, depending on your financial situation. The only issue that bothered me is that it gets really loud, with bartenders calling out your name when your drink is ready. Plus the food is right in the middle of the cafe which makes it a little inconvenient. But in general, strongly recommended as an unusual brunch experience on beautiful Kastanienallee. read more

Checked out the vegan brunch, but I wouldn't say it was worth 8E (we did the sliding scale and paid 10 since we're tourists and can afford it). Love their mission and the atmosphere, but the food wasn't very impressive, pretty much just cold items. Neighborhood was really interesting, and the people there were super nice. I think I may just be spoiled by vegan brunch in Philly, so I'd come here for drinks (and maybe snacks) rather than go all out for brunch. read more

The atmosphere here is really wonderful. You can relax, enjoy fantastic food (whether you're here for the weekend brunch or just a standard cafe visit). It's very inclusive, all types should feel welcome here. (Bathrooms are non-gendered). The coffee is great, and they offer Solimate which is a great alternative to Club Mate (organic, vegan, and a percentage of the proceeds go to good causes). I ate a slice of a vegan quiche which was really excellent, very creamy and filling, and I had a blueberry chocolate muffin which was also really delicious. The staff are friendly and open. Booze IS cheap here, and the vibe is exactly my thing. It's not the most alternative joint in Berlin, but it def has an hippy flair, AND they are actually a co-op, so that's cool. There's always been very chill minimal and tech-house beats going on in the background, which I happen to love, so I'm biased, but still, it's cool and shouldn't scare off any electronica-haters. Despite the loud American sitting next to us, flitting trendily between English and French while her French chum puffed away on his pipe, this was a really nice breakfast. The vegan buffet includes cereals and lots of interesting toppings for your bread, including a tasty vegan scrambled egg, and curry frischkäse (vegansthey have to be inventive!). The coffee the real test of any breakfast hit the spot. The concept here is that you pay what you can afford, from 5-9EUR, with EUR7 on average keeping things ticking over nicely. The decor is simple with a healthy dose of graffiti (check those toilets!), but this for me adds to, rather than detracts from the relaxed and utterly non-pretentious atmosphere. What is wrong with these guys? Oh my goodness. When became too cool for school the new black? I feel sorry for people like them who obviously don't enjoy being alive at all. They must have lost touch with reality, this is so sad. How can we change things and make the world a better place with ignorant people like these? The worst thing is they pretend to be caring, but they obviously don't care at all. It is so easy to use lovely words but it takes strong minds to walk the talk. I quote from their website: We - the Morgenrot collective - try to create, together with you, a place where meetings, discussions, events and exchanges between people from different emancipatory movements are possible. There was this anti tourist thing (a pic captioned no more trolleys) in one of the leaflets on the counter. This is a highly interesting topic to me hence I started to talk to one of the waiters about it, he simply shrugged me off with the words: he hates trolleys, when they wake him up at night. So much for creating places for discussions and exchanges between people ... bla bla bla. It is saddening that most people lost all passion. All they do is pretend to be cool, empty words won't bring change at all. A friend asked me to understand them, since they probably work under really bad conditions. But if they don't like cafés like these, why don't they go and do what they do at a fast food restaurant? If you are into pretentious grown-ups dressed up as cool kids, this is your place. Came here for brunch right as they opened at 11am on a Sunday. The buffet seemed small at first, but really they just put out small amounts of everything, and refill constantly. The bread was warm and soft, the extremely varied sweet and savory spreads delicious. I also loved the bean salad and caprese (mozzarella, tomato, and basil, one of my favorite combos of all food-dom). The best part, however, was the CHEESE. Little wedges of creamy beautiful bleu cheese and brie; slices of flavorful gouda, swiss, and more; and an amazingly tangy and wonderful gorgonzola spread. Paired with the bread and some fresh sliced tomato, it was heavenly. The only weird thing was the vegan scrambled eggs--huh? It looked like bright yellow couscous. We also tried the vegan chocolate cake and it was pretty darn good for something without eggs and butter. The price is anything between 4 and 8 euro, you pay what you think you owe. The atmosphere is cozy, and I was diggin' the Motown tunes. I will definitely be back--the perfect pre-Mauerpark brunch spot! read more

I love cafe morgenrot. Their philosophy is that you pay somewhere between 6 and 10 euros, depending on how much you earn. But you should pay 8 because this is how much they need to survive... The waitress wasnt really nice, i was used to come here on a sunday (it gets really crowded, come early on a sunday, there will be a queue at 11 am) but on this particular saturday, there were not a lot of people there. I was waiting infront of the cafe, thinking that i had to hurry or something, and this waitress made fun of me. Sorry for wanting to eat!? She got nice when we paid 10 euros per person. Anyway, you have to try their gorgonzola spread, its really good. Or their vegan nutella. Just try it all out! Most of it is just delicious and has a nice twist to it. Hmm, I feel sorry for people who are first time visitors to Berlin and don't know about the pretentious punk/anarchist/gay scene in Berlin, they are so full of themselves it's kinda yucky and embarrassing to be around it at first, and especially when they are condescending to anyone outside their narrow little world. Just brush the rudeness off as their problem, don't take it personally, they all have a chip of their shoulder and are like that to everyone outside of their cult. And don't judge Germans by them, most Germans are not like this, it is a Berlin thing. BUT, in saying that, enjoy the buffet and the ambience, once you get past the rude, mean-spirited service. I'm used to unfriendly staff in restaurants in Berlin, but that place is extreme. Entered the place at 12 when they just opened. The guy looked at me as if he wanted to kill me for being there so early and expecting service. I just wanted to turn around and eat somewhere else. Unfortunately it is the only vegan place I could figure out in that area. He didn't know anything about the food they're serving and so on and on top of that really nasty...food isn't that spectacular either...It's definitely the last time I've been there! I am not reviewing the food but service at this cafe.I came over for a conference to berlin and looked up this cafe. Having read the reviews I decided to give it a shot. I arrived alone and sat at the bar. I saw a waiter across the bar and asked him about the breakfast buffet and how it worked since I was not sure if one had to pay before or later. He looked at me as if I was stupid and told me in a condescending tone (with a heavy eastern european accent) to go find out myself at the buffet area and that the place is busy and he does not know. I asked again..not certain if he did not understand..and he just walked away ignoring me. I have worked with people from all walks of life all over the world in my time as a doctor and believe that we all deserve empathy and respect. Unfortunately I feel that me being asian and speaking english had something to do with it as he was perfectly nice to the german speaking customer before me.To the restaurant owner,be aware that customers do have a say in today's world and can bring bad publicity to your cafe if you do not treat people with respect!I will not recommend this place to anyone. read more
