I came here for churros with my friends while visiting Barcelona. We came in during the afternoon and it was pretty empty. The staff was friendly and have us menus right away after we took a seat. We didn't need much time to look over the menu as we knew exactly what we wanted. The four of us ended up splitting two orders of churros with the hot chocolate. The churros arrived about 5-10 minutes later alongside the hot chocolate. Everything was freshly prepared and very hot when it arrived. The churros were not dusted with sugar, but they did have some sugar available at the table. The churros themselves had a crispy, golden outside, with a softer inside. Dipped in the smooth, decadent hot chocolate they were fantastic! The hot chocolate was rich, but not super thick. The two combined were very enjoyable and we finished all of them easily. I thought the portion of churros could have been slightly larger. They served the two orders together on the same plate. I thought the service was good and they were friendly. I wouldn't say these were the best churros, but they hit the spot. read more

Landmark cafe with nouveau accents that could use a little touch-up but are still cute. Very casual, the equivalent of a diner or coffee shop with decent paella, gazpacho, and baked goods. Historic exterior is photo-worthy, interior is old-school vibe; food and service are average. You go here because you want that Modernista cafe aura and a quick bite. read more

LOVE THE TAPAS! The boyfriend, his fam, and I were strolling down La Rambla and were in need of a quick bite amidst all of the touring. We were in the mood for tapas but didn't want to go out of our way to look for something spectacular so we decided to give Cafe de l'ópera a try. Now the name of the restaurant is a bit deceiving as it's French but in Barcelona but it was still worth it. Since we had arrived in the middle of the day it wasn't too packed which was a rather good thing considering it was pretty tightly packed inside like most European restaurants are. Don't be fooled, however, this restaurant is actually two stories and has even more seating inside along with a full service bar at the ground level. We were definitely thirsty for SANGRIA and it did not disappoint. The pitcher itself was good for about four or so glasses each and if we were going to try for a siesta then we probably would have opted for another pitcher. The tapas were pretty tasty as well. I can't remember what they all were but they included sausages, olives, croquettes, fries, and some other breaded item that I can't recall. They also served some bread with cheese which was just lovely. Overall, we had a good experience here and while I can't say I'd actively return here if I was ever back in the area, it is still a viable option for some great food and decent service. Cafè de l'Ópera is one of the older more established cafes of Barcelona, having been in continuous operations since 1929. The café has a rather nice interior seating area but most of their business is conduct outside on Rambla street median area. The outside café seats are padded, comfortable and for a Barcelona outside area café, has rather good service. Most of the cafes of Barcelona aren't exactly well known for their prompt, efficient or professional service. I tend to use the outside area which couldn't be more ideal for people watching, just taking a relaxing break or having a drink. read more

Cafe L'Opera Quaint little cafe on La Rambla. Service was slow but I acquaint that to a cultural difference rather than poor service. We were there around 1:00pm which I believe is heading into siesta time. The food was ok, nothing to write home about but was decent. I had a ham and cheese omelette on a baguette and cheese croquettes. The highlight was the Cava Sangria. It was very tart and refreshing. Our waiter was so impatient and rude to us as well. He gave us an attitude after we ordered and said "that's all?" with an attitude. Historic and inviting, Cafè de l'Ópera is an inviting place for a quick bite or drink. I had a good time at Cafè de l'Ópera. The cafe has been around for a long time and seems to be a popular place for both tourists and locals. The inside feels like you're walking back in time, with beautiful artwork on the walls and waiters dressed in black bow ties and white shirts. The hot chocolate is a MUST order, as it is literally a piece of chocolate melted into a cup. The waiters here more so than other places was a bit brusque, which isn't too out of the ordinary for Europe. Overall, I'd stop in for coffee/tea/hot chocolate and perhaps a snack but nothing more - there are too many more interesting and better places to eat at in Barcelona. read more

This place is great! They have a slot of options for coffee and alot of other drinks. We got the churros with chocolate dip and it was pretty good. My very first meal in Barcelona after 35 hours of flights and layovers. This seems to be a much-referenced establishment in any and all Spain guidebooks, though I have no idea what for. Got some plate of pan, jamón, y queso, followed by freshly made churros con xocolata. The food was solid though nothing special -- the xocolata was quite unremarkable and, though the right thickness in consistency, tasted as though made with water than milk/cream. Sort of like when you make Swiss Miss with boiling water vs hot milk, you dig? Staff and customers were all incredibly friendly and I think the whole large meal came out to €8. read more

As a visitor, this historic cafe is a great place to stop in for a sweet snack if you're wandering around Las Ramblas, and have finished looking at the Liceu Theatre across the way. There's a great mix of locals and tourists like us. There were two older guys reading their papers together across from us, and another couple of locals passionately debating local politics next to us. Then there's us and another couple Excellent. I loved the old world decor - modernist period with classical details, and Viennese influences - made our simple churros and chocolate treat an elevated event. This time I tried the Swiss, which just means they throw a gigantic dollop of good whipped cream on top of the thick chocolate. Before, I didn't understand the appeal of eggs/bacon/sausage/mushrooms (menu item titled "Royal Breakfast" here) but that was because US restaurants make it pretty badly. The decor was clearly stunning 50 years ago, and has had more than a few fresh coats of paint since then. It was morning time and my family and I came out of the local market that is at La Rambla with some treats and we decided to sit in Cafe De l'Opera tables to wait until they open so we could order coffee there. Five minutes later this elder waiter with a big mustache and glasses came to us jelling and snapping his fingers telling us in Spanish "se van al mcdonald porque nadie los va a atender aquí " translation- " you better go to the mcdonalds because no body will serve you here". It was our first meal in Barcelona and the cafe did not disappoint. We ordered tapas (all vegetarian except Spanish omelette ) and everything was delicious. Every city's got one. A cafe or restaurant that's been around forever, is charming in its own way, and has steady traffic of patrons for reasons that aren't quite clear to anyone. Also like similar places in other cities, staff have probably been there forever and are bored stiff, the vibe feels old and dark, they only take cash and are located in a tourist-heavy area. I had to edit this review since I decided to give it another try. My husband and I met a friend here for churros and hot chocolate. It was pretty good. The churros came out hot, very thin and donut shaped as we dunked it in sugar and then the chocolate! It was pretty yummy! I learned that this is one of the fewer coffee shops that kept the old vintage look and didn't change much of the interior design. The place gets very crowded and loud. Not a place to go if you are looking to read quietly. read more

This was my first taste of chocolate con churros in Spain. It was definitely a wonderful experience, and I'm very glad it was my first - everything about it lived up to the hype I had heard about churros and hot chocolate in Spain. Even after traveling to Seville and Madrid after Barcelona (and having chocolate and churros many more times), I daresay the hot chocolate here is one of the best I had. It's thick and delicious, nothing like the silly American hot chocolate you get. The churros here is also fried to perfection, and slightly salty which gives a nice contrast to the hot chocolate.
