I've been here before. The food is tasty and always fresh. Coffee is made fresh all day. Today my server was Hyat. She had a big smile gracious welcome, I felt right at home. I ordered my everything bagel with cream cheese and it comes as a sandwich with tomato and lettuce and she did it perfectly. It's always clean here and you have the choice of sitting outside in the rotunda or inside . There's always some here that enjoy just working coffee I here. It's acquiet little space while they have their bakery or pastry and looks like they've come from the bakery fresh. They also have a menu with this slice no sandwiches to choose from. You would think with a name like Caffe Teatro that you would expect the staff singing Puccini arias in full costume, but no, there isn't much you could consider theatrical at this compact coffee stop. It must be its placement in the dramatic Rotunda building that must have inspired its moniker. But you don't see stagings of "Tosca" here, just working drones walking to and fro on the open floors like any other office building. I have to admit that the only reason I've come here several times is that it's on the way to my dentist's office. $2.35 will get you a steaming-hot, medium au lait. I take BART from the city and hate the swill they serve in the office's reception area. I came upon Caffe Teatro accidentally and must be subconsciously drawn to the high ceilings of the rotunda since there's nothing distinctive about their coffee. I wouldn't know about their baked goods. Don't you remember?... I'm on my way to the dentist, for Pete's sake. They are quick here and not particularly chatty unless you're a regular of which there appears to be a constant stream. I'm always in a hurry anyway. The soft leather love-seat is inviting unless a laptopper beats you to it. Maybe it's time I sing a cantata for my caffeine. Not a bad little spot for coffee. I noticed Caffe Teatro while on my way to an appointment nearby, and figured I would check them out being I was a tad hungry and in need of some coffee. The name is misleading in a sense, only considering that you might perhaps assume the interior to be just a tad more...well, theatrical? All in all, the interior aesthetics is nothing appealing, but suitable and cozy. They do have an outside seating area located within the Rotunda building, that is quite beautiful to feast your eye's on, and perhaps I guess you can say, is a little more theatrical in a sense. They offer your standard selections of coffee/tea drinks to choose from. They also offer a small array of breakfast items such as pastries, breakfast bagels, and some additional items. I ordered a small cup of coffee and an order of two eggs scrambled. The coffee was decent, I believe they brew Illy's. The eggs also were deliciously presented, along with an array of sliced tomatoes resting beside it. The eggs also turned out to be surprisingly tasteful and filling. Service was warm and cheerful, and the prices were fair. Can't say I would be eager to come here again, considering there are a handful of different options, however, it's certainly worth giving a shot. read more

This is a coffee shop tucked away in the rotunda next to frank ogawa plaza. As this is a spot facing the a walkway into frank ogawa plaza and located within the rotunda building, there really isn't any dedicated parking. It's very much a walk up kinda place.There are however a lot of parking garages and suchlike for the area around frank ogawa plaza and of course the 12st/Oakland City Center bart is not even a block away. There is sometimes a table or two for outside seating, but as the business faces away from frank ogawa plaza the view isn't anything remarkable-you'll be looking at the building next door and a walkway-the inside seating is recommended. If you want something to draw the eye whilst you coffee up, there is inside rotunda facing seating which is much more pleasant. The building this is located in was built with a massive inside open space, with a lot of art deco styling. Once a premier shopping location now it houses lots of office space, this coffee spot, a yoga studio and a few other small businesses. The inside seating is the usual table/chair combos, but slightly more comfortable. They offer a few food items-bagel and panini sandwich thingys along with surprisingly tasty pastries. While the coffee can be hit and miss (depending on the skill of the barista) for the most part it's a hit. The plain cuppa joe is french roast, but I'd say the lattes, cappuccinos etc are really worth the expense here. Better then average. They do a very credible Cafe' Au Lait. Pricing is slightly less then the area standard of 5-7 bucks for a coffee and a sweet-more on the five dollar side of things price wise. Making a salad/lunch choice will put you in the ten to fifteen dollar range. This is much calmer/quieter then just about any other coffee location in the area, useful for when you are trying to get some work done, or just need a bit of peace. read more

I can only comment on the pastries since I've never actually sat here and ate food. The pastries are great. I am not really sure what all of them all but basically anything that is cut into a rectangular prism is delicious. Not overly sweet and goes perfectly with coffee. This hidden-away café saved me from starvation recently when I attended a 7:30AM networking meeting in the neighborhood. They usually feed you at these things, but not this time. If you can't feed me at your breakfast meeting, I can't give you my sparkling, charming, best self. I left the meeting hangry and not exactly smart. Lucky for me, I stumbled upon Café Teatro's cheerful, welcoming staff and its uplifting views from the gorgeous Rotunda Building's mezzanine tables. I had a bagel and cream cheese and can report that the bagels are sufficiently chewy and the cream cheese authentic and plentiful. I like my seat-with-a-view so much I stayed and worked awhile. I give one star to the fig oatmeal bar adn another to the location area. It is a nice place to enjoy a drink when you have time to sit inside the rotunda. I love Caffe Teatro. They are such good people - they even donated a bunch of gift cards for a walkathon we helped organize for Oakland youth. The lunch here is great, $5.50 for a half sandwich and soup/salad. Their soups are always delicious and unique (love the split pea with ham, or chicken tortilla...) The best sandwich by far is their eggplant sandwich - lightly breaded and fried eggplant slice on light rye, mmmm - healthy and delish. The coffees, teas, etc are very good. There was a point where I ate lunch here every day for almost two weeks. I wish they were closer to the office, I'd be there twice a day. The best part about Teatro is the venue - they are in the beautiful Rotunda building. I come here to escape the hectic crackheadiness of downtown Oakland - almost feels like being in Europe or a fancy library somewhere. Well worth the visit. read more

GREAT portobello mushroom and cheese sandwich. Good coffee, latte, ice tea. This coffeeshop is clean, and the owners are friendly and remember your name. You can even load up a 'tab' here with cash or a credit card, and just give them your name thereafter. No need to mess with plebian bills or your wallet! I mostly just drink coffee, and it's hot and strong enough here. Great place for downtown Oakland work meetings. It's different from your plunk-down-and-camp-out cafe style from Berkeley, but then again it's a different area and clientele. This place served quite possibly the nastiest soy latte I ever had. I'm not sure if the milk had gone bad, or what, but it tasted sour so something was definitely wrong. I forced my way through half of it but just couldn't make it - gross. On the other hand, it's a nice feel going there because while it doesn't look like too much from the outside square, when you walk in it opens up to a larger cafe - sorta feels like you discovered something tucked away. Coffee - average so maybe about 3 stars worth Food - hit or miss - chicken salad sandwich and some soups (Italian Wedding, Cream of Asparagus) are great, others are meh. Staff - super nice and they often-times play great music Ambiance - the cafe itself is a bit outdated but they tend to show local art work and there are several tables within the Rotunda with great views of the glass dome. I'd definitely recommend as a quick but standard lunch spot or for a basic latte or coffee. It'd be great if they revamped their menu a bit. read more

I seem to have become somewhat of patron of Caffe Teatro in the past few weeks, to the point that each time I enter they know exactly what my drink order will be. It's a lovely feeling [see: Cheers]. The staff is a friendly and certainly adds to the 10-20 minutes of my day that I get to spend in this cozy establishment. I am a frequenter of Caffe Teatro's mochas and they make it just right for getting me over the afternoon hump. It's not a life-altering mocha, but it is definitely miles above any chain coffee beverage I could ever order. They also make a scandalously tasty fig bar that, when I allow myself to indulge, never fails to live up to my expectations. read more

I stopped in here for a quick bite around 1pm and the place was nearly silent. Other than the somewhat, but not annoyingly, loud music playing, there were just a handful of people in there so not much noise at all. And it's nice that they have tables in what I guess is an atrium? outside of the cafe proper. Inside the cafe, meh. Nothing noteworthy. Asiago Cheese Chowder was the soup of the day. Mmmm.. It was delish! I was expecting a smooth creamy cheese soup. What I ladled into my mouth was so much more. I hesitate to use this word, but it was a chunky creamy bowl of mm.mm.mm. Chunky makes it sound heavy, but it wasn't actually at all. It did have bits of bacon in it, which I'm not opposed to. In fact, I loved it. But my suggestion is that you write an ingredient like that underneath the name of the soup. A vegetarian may think they're ordering a seemingly veg soup, but then gets an unpleasant surprise and returns the soup complaining. The soup gets thrown out and comped. Save both the herbivores and yourself the trouble. Just my 2 cents. I also ordered a pumpkin bar. Not quite as good as the soup, but also very tasty. SO why only 3 stars?? Because as good as the soup was, the bread that came with it was most definitely not. I took one bite and put the rest down. And that's where it stayed. It reminded me of a generic, white flour hamburger bun from the grocery store (you know the kind I mean) sliced to make it look better. It was so disgusting. I didn't ask for the bread. The nice woman at the counter (and she was very nice) asked me if I'd like some to accompany my soup. And as soon as she said it, I thought that it was exactly what I wanted but hadn't expressed it yet. It would have been perfect to soak the bread in that bowl of deliciousness. But that bread was so bad, nothing could help it. Please Teatro! I agree- don't trust the map. This place is not where the maps says it is. But regardless of where the maps says it is, I wouldn't recommend going there anyway. I got a large café au lait. It was watery and gross. I told the barista that it was watery and before I could even object she poured a shot of bitter espresso into my drink. That she was able to brew the espresso before I noticed what was going on makes it obvious that the espresso was not brewed properly (18-24 seconds)- well the taste also made that really obvious too. There's not even supposed to be espresso in a café au lait. I didn't try the food but nothing on the menu stood out as something begging to be eaten. read more
