Here's the story: Grecco and his sister Stella grew up together. Their parents ran the local bakery in North Beach, and the two siblings were destined to take over their parents life work. Known for their pastries and friendly family service, the bakery was a gem in the neighborhood and everybody looked forward to the day the bakery would continue under the reins of Grecco and Stella. As the siblings grew up however, they started to hone their individual skills. Grecco focused on honing his customer service skills and wanted to create an ambiance within the bakery that could bring all neighbors together in a European-like cafe. Stella focused on her culinary expertise and strove to create the best tiramisu in all of San Francisco. The two siblings could not meet eye to eye on which aspect of the bakery to invest in; Grecco thought their pastries were already up to par and wanted to invest in the bakery's interior and exterior design, and Stella wanted their baked goods to bring in customers from all around the world. Tragically, this resulted in the split of the bakery. Grecco moved across the street and opened Cafe Grecco, and Stella kept their family's business and renamed it Stella Pastry and Cafe. Even today in 2021, you can tell the stark contrast between these two bakery gems. Grecco's bakery sits on a large plot where he has completely changed the exterior to reflect a modern Parisian cafe. His trained staff are kind and humorous, and the entire bakery is an experience that is perfect to sit and people watch your Sunday afternoon away. His pastries, however, are pretty standard. Stella Pastry and Cafe, on the other hand, has completely perfected their pastries. Their tiramisu and sacripantina are perfect squares that have been measured out with rulers, and each layer is sectioned off between the most delectable cream that have taken decades to perfect. They use only the finest chocolate and ingredients found locally in the city. Their ambiance, however, is lacking in that there is no outdoor seating, and the cafe itself is better for takeout than dining in. Now I don't know if any of the backstory is actually true or not, but this is the tale my friends and I concocted this Saturday afternoon as we had a cake taste test between these two bakeries. Without a doubt, Stella had the best cakes. However, the bakery is small and cramped, and there is nowhere to sit to enjoy these pastries. As such, we took them over to Caffe Grecco and very much enjoyed sitting on their Parisian inspired outdoor patio while people watching, where the staff were incredibly kind and funny. We think if this story is true, these siblings should join together once again and create the powerhouse bakery that this neighborhood once longed for. read more

I've been coming to Caffe Greco for over a decade. I've always supported them and I've always promoted this place to others, but I think today might be my last visit. I ordered an iced americano and was charged $8.69. Yes, really. I asked several times if it was a mistake, even referencing the menu that said an americano cost $5-something. They told me the price was right because of tax and an extra charge for ice (and that it would've cost more if I wanted milk too). This wasn't my first time ordering this here, but it was definitely my first time paying this much. Of course, being me, I tipped after, so I essentially paid $10 for an iced americano. I've never paid that much for coffee in my life. It's unlikely I ever will again. This is black coffee with ice. Illy, not third-wave bougie SF coffee. I understand that times are hard during inflation, but no other place in the city is doing this. The day prior I was at Verve which roasts some of the best coffee you can get, and an americano cost $4, iced or not. Charging nearly $9 for an iced americano is NOT normal. We walked over here after dinner down the street because my friend wanted an affogato. It's a cute little place with a large menu of drinks and pastries. I got a small hot white chocolate, a piece of chocolate cake, and my friend's affogato - $17. My cake was amazing, and incredibly rich, so we only had maybe 4 bites and took the rest home. I would definitely get their cake again! She said their affogato is the best in the city. My hot white chocolate was really good, but the small is super tiny, so you don't get much. read more

I ordered the Belgium waffle and my relative ordered the panini and request to have ham. The staff gave us a number on a stand, and we found a place to seat. The wait time wasn't so long because we got our cappuccino first, so just two or three sips later, our dishes arrived. Both were very delicious and I was surprised on the overall lightness. The waffle was crispy on the outside, and soft and warm in the inside. The whipped cream didn't look like the spray types and it didn't taste like one at all. The cream was creamy and had a nice milky flavor. I generously poured myself the whole little jug of maple syrup over my waffles. It was enough and the waffle soaked it up nicely. I also loved the panini. I've only eaten three in the past, but I really enjoyed this one. Compared to the other ones I have tried, this one had slices of boiled egg with the ham and cheese. Brasiliana and Tiramisu both delicious. Haven't been here in years but used to come here every Sunday after a long day of Motorcycle riding. Seems it now becomes Spanish hours at night as music is far from the Italian tunes we used to enjoy yeas ago. Smoke still drifts into the cafe but not much of a bother but can be annoying to some more sensitive folks.
