Their ice cream was super creamy, and the nuttiness added a great complexity that made me savor it all. Orange and Chocolate cookie - this was a big disappointment, with how it appeared. It was super dry, and needed more orange flavor. With the way it is, it needs coffee to be eaten, which I can see, but still isn't amazing either way. Hit this place late on a weeknight. Place was fairly empty but clean and nice, lovely outside seating with heaters. Two guys working were friendly and efficient. Had a couple of decaf lattes. They brew Illy so a dependable flavor. Not anything exotic but hot, well made and hit the spot. We also splurged on a cheesecake since it's important to carb-load before bed. Cheesecake was perfect. During my trip to San Francisco, I made two stops into Caffe Greco and would have made more if I had more time. This is the perfect spot to grab coffee, gelato, dessert, whatever you want in an atmosphere you can just sit, relax, and hang out in. The first visit was in the morning just to grab some coffee. My sister and I grabbed two caffe lattes & my boyfriend ordered the white caffe moca. All were delicious! The white caffe moca is a little sweet for my liking, but the taste of it was certainly enjoyable. We stopped in again a different night, as they are conveniently open late. We ordered three hot chocolates, a cup of creme brulee gelato, a cup of spumoni gelato, a slice of sacripantina cake & a slice of chocolate kahlua cheesecake. The hot chocolates were great. The gelatos were to die for! So creamy and flavorful and a prime highlight for us. The cakes were the only disappointment. We previously had sacripantina from another nearby cafe which set the bar extremely high on our expectations. The kahlua cheesecake was pretty dry and just fell flat for us. Not to fret though, we still loved this place & thoroughly enjoyed everything else. One tip to note, and honestly, a big disappointment due to the inconvenience is they are a cash-only business so plan accordingly if you're going to stop in. read more

I wasn't here very long, but I needed a quick pick-me-up and stopped in one morning on my recent trip to SF. Caffe Greco is an authentic Italian caffe located in North Beach that has been around since the late 80's. They use Illy coffee beans here. They also serve light breakfast items, lunch, pastries, and gelato. As I was waiting for my latte, I spent a few minutes taking in the quiet atmosphere while looking at some of the old vintage photos on the wall. I observed people sipping their coffee on the sidewalk tables and some light conversation going on at a table near me. These are the small subtle things that I love about Italian cafes. This is one of my favorite cafes to go to when in North Beach and when taking others around. I love the patio outside and the decor inside, it feels very European with the vintage posters and the tables and chairs. Great even for a cup of coffee and a good book. The last time I was here the service was very friendly which is always nice. The coffee you can't go wrong with and the prices are reasonable. I am very picky with my cannoli as you can get some that just taste chalky , and I think Greco has one of the best in North Beach. My housemate and I are still relatively new to most parts of the city (thanks, Covid) and one weekend we decided we wanted to take a look around North Beach and get a little taste of the Italian American culture in sf. To this end, I did a quick search of italian bakeries- because sweets really are the priority- and landed on Caffe Greco. We visited on a slightly dreary but still temperate Saturday morning and the line was out the door- which is how I knew I picked the right place! We waited about 20-30 mins in line. There was one person manning the front counter doing the coffee and packaging of sweets, so it did take a but longer than you would expect. Food orders go through the kitchen and you get a number and can go sit down while you wait, so since we just ordered pre-made desserts we got out of there pretty fast after getting to counter. They currently have an abundance of outdoor (and some indoor) seating, which we took advantage of. I felt the outdoor seating was pretty sufficiently distant from other tables. As for what we got, honestly we went pretty crazy. We got the affogato, tiramisu, brasiliana, and cheesecake. All were baseline excellent. I'm not a tiramisu person but I thought that this one was nice and light with a subtler coffee tone, perfect for a morning snack (if you have a sweet tooth like me). The cheesecake was obviously much heavier but is very well made and a perfect creamy to cakey balance. Affogato you just can't go wrong with, and they use illy coffee so . The brasiliano was what really pushed this place to the top of the 4 star range. I'd never have anything like it before. The coffee (and of course liqueur) flavor is much stronger in it than the tiramisu, and the cream layers were fluffy and smooth. It was honestly excellent and definitely worth the $6. Highly recommend if you're in North Beach with a sweet tooth. They also have an expansive breakfast (served til 3pm!) and lunch menu with delicious-sounding food. Here's the story: Grecco and his sister Stella grew up together. Their parents ran the local bakery in North Beach, and the two siblings were destined to take over their parents life work. Known for their pastries and friendly family service, the bakery was a gem in the neighborhood and everybody looked forward to the day the bakery would continue under the reins of Grecco and Stella. As the siblings grew up however, they started to hone their individual skills. Grecco focused on honing his customer service skills and wanted to create an ambiance within the bakery that could bring all neighbors together in a European-like cafe. Stella focused on her culinary expertise and strove to create the best tiramisu in all of San Francisco. The two siblings could not meet eye to eye on which aspect of the bakery to invest in; Grecco thought their pastries were already up to par and wanted to invest in the bakery's interior and exterior design, and Stella wanted their baked goods to bring in customers from all around the world. Tragically, this resulted in the split of the bakery. Grecco moved across the street and opened Cafe Grecco, and Stella kept their family's business and renamed it Stella Pastry and Cafe. Even today in 2021, you can tell the stark contrast between these two bakery gems. Grecco's bakery sits on a large plot where he has completely changed the exterior to reflect a modern Parisian cafe. His trained staff are kind and humorous, and the entire bakery is an experience that is perfect to sit and people watch your Sunday afternoon away. His pastries, however, are pretty standard. Stella Pastry and Cafe, on the other hand, has completely perfected their pastries. Their tiramisu and sacripantina are perfect squares that have been measured out with rulers, and each layer is sectioned off between the most delectable cream that have taken decades to perfect. They use only the finest chocolate and ingredients found locally in the city. Their ambiance, however, is lacking in that there is no outdoor seating, and the cafe itself is better for takeout than dining in. Now I don't know if any of the backstory is actually true or not, but this is the tale my friends and I concocted this Saturday afternoon as we had a cake taste test between these two bakeries. Without a doubt, Stella had the best cakes. However, the bakery is small and cramped, and there is nowhere to sit to enjoy these pastries. As such, we took them over to Caffe Grecco and very much enjoyed sitting on their Parisian inspired outdoor patio while people watching, where the staff were incredibly kind and funny. We think if this story is true, these siblings should join together once again and create the powerhouse bakery that this neighborhood once longed for. read more

I love North Beach because you have a ton of local coffee shops and restaurants that have the cutest vibe. Caffe Greco has the best breakfast panini. I always replace the ham with prosciutto and ask for it with scrambled eggs. The cappuccino is one of my favorites too and they have different sizes. For the full experience, I recommend getting the biggest size (probably the largest cup of coffee you'll ever have and totally worth it!). They only take cash and there are a few ATMs on the same street and one inside the restaurant if needed. On weekends, there's always a big line but the service is very fast! Definitely recommend this place for a coffee date, to catch up with friends or to read a book/get some work done. read more

My friend and I stopped by Caffe Greco for coffee on the weekend, and had a lovely time sitting outside. You first order at the counter inside, and there's a handful of very tempting desserts laid out. It's cash only, which we unfortunately didn't know beforehand, but the two men taking our order at the counter were so kind to take the little cash we had ($9) and make us lattes. We took the iced lattes outside, they have a bunch of tables on the sidewalk, with a couple of benches too. It's really nice to sit there with the sun out while enjoying coffee and sweet treats. Ok, so this review has two parts. First the coffee and the pastries. The lemon cake was amazing as was the pastry with citrus ricotta filling. Cappuccino was tasty. The breakfast was another story. I had an iced latte and tried 4 different types of cake here (tiramisu, sacripantina, brasiliana, tiramisu and tartufo. The iced latte tasted mostly of milk. The espresso flavor didn't come through as much as a normal latte would. Two of the cakes were great and the other two were just okay (including the tiramisu). The greatest part about this shop was that they had plenty of outdoor seating options. They're located in the heart of Little Italy. They take cash only. The cafe's ambiance was peaceful and with subtle elegance, that we decided to eat here instead. Since it was brunch time, we ordered dishes from the breakfast menu. I ordered the Belgium waffle and my relative ordered the panini and request to have ham. The staff gave us a number on a stand, and we found a place to seat. The wait time wasn't so long because we got our cappuccino first, so just two or three sips later, our dishes arrived. Both were very delicious and I was surprised on the overall lightness. The waffle was crispy on the outside, and soft and warm in the inside. The whipped cream didn't look like the spray types and it didn't taste like one at all. The cream was creamy and had a nice milky flavor. I generously poured myself the whole little jug of maple syrup over my waffles. It was enough and the waffle soaked it up nicely. I also loved the panini. I've only eaten three in the past, but I really enjoyed this one. Compared to the other ones I have tried, this one had slices of boiled egg with the ham and cheese.
