It was like I was moving back to the 1970s, or something. Tibo and Coias were the two places I was assured I had to try when I moved, so why it has taken me over 8 months to go to Tibo, I don't know. We dropped in yesterday to help combat a hangover, and the menu left me in no doubt how best to tackle it: Full Scottish Breakfast and lots of coffee! Now, I was made aware that the prices have recently gone up because we were handed two different menus, presumably one old and one new one. However, don't let this deter you. The portions more than make up for the price and the quality of the ingredients is high. The service was a little disjointed (meals turned up without sausages and haggis which then showed a few mins later), but the gent was charming enough to be forgiven. They also have a sign stating that they serve their coffee at 60 degrees, and when you taste their cappuccino you can see why. This is the best coffee I have had in Dennistoun. The decor is pleasant, though there is some slightly questionable art (sorry to whoever the artist is) and the staff were very friendly. Definitely worth popping in if you are in the neighbourhood.

It's a wee space so keep that in mind when visiting - there's a wee table for two as well as a window seat where you could fit about 4 people. There's good tunes, a chilled-out, welcoming vibe and of course the delicious cakes. You can also get ginger ale (made in house), toast (with butter and jam, or cinnamon brulee) and soup. They offer free wifi and are happy for you to hang out for a wee while if you want to work away on your laptop, like I am right now. I grabbed a cup of tea and the cinnamon brulee toast which is just ridiculously delicious and tasty - and a good portion at two large slices for just £1.50. As I said, it's pay what you want but everything is marked with a price which at least gives you an idea of what you should be coughing up! The window space is great for watching cars go by too, if you need some time for brainstorming.

When I found out it was owned by an artist also using the cafe as a means to display her work/support her so she could work on her art, even better. I wasn't disappointed. Stan's serves hand filtered coffee, so you wont get a latte or a cappuccino here, but what you will get is an excellent, smooth coffee and cakes and bakes from the likes of Bakery47. So far I've tried a banana and peanut butter loaf, brownies and a rose and pistachio sponge cake - all delicious. It operates on a pay what you want basis, which I liked the idea of, but was a little daunted by before going in. I shouldn't have worried though, as suggested prices are displayed and you can just choose whether or not you want to add a little extra (which is nice to do, because art). If you're travelling from elsewhere keep in mind that it's teeny tiny and maybe only sits around 8 or so people, but I've always taken away (Alexandra Park is across the road if you fancy a picnic). The owner is very friendly and when you can't make it along in person, keep an eye on her social media - her Instagram hashtag #peoplewhostareintostans is a hilarious watch of people peering into the shop suspiciously from their cars at the traffic lights. Though I do worry I'll be one of them one day...peeking in to check out the cakes on display!

You know when you so can't be bothered cooking that you think it will be less effort to go out and buy something? Well, I made myself presentable and ran down to Caffe Euro to see what I could find. There are maybe seven wee tables in here, mostly occupied. It's quite a popular wee place, and I've nerer seen it empty. I ordered a cheese toastie and an empire biscuit to go. It's a well-known fact that fatty foods help you study. The guy told me to take a seat while I waited. The age range in here was about 7-107, judging by the tiny, bearded, bony man sat at one table, and the air was filled with the pleasent murmur of chat from each table. My food was soon ready. The food was nice, but plain, and it came to something like £2.50, which was good. I think I might come in here to sit in and get something more substantial next time. The chilli con carne sounds good to me.

It reminded me of the University Cafe on Byres Road which I also used to frequent on a regular basis years ago; no added fanciness or pretension, a dash of surly waitress and a pinch of chippy grease to soothe the (hungover) soul. Well Coia's Cafe, my how you've grown! Upon 1st entering Coia's quite soon after it reopening I must admit I got sad and longed for the school-style tables and greasy misspelled menus but mostly for the mucho cheapness of the old Coia's. Oof. Then upon visiting Coia's again after this 1st time I grew to love Coia's for what it is now - a great Italian cafe/restaurant. I must admit I do still find the prices a tad steep for myself but having said that you do certainly get what you pay for and wow! Hello big portions! Woof-a-doodle-doo. I'm quite a big eater and I like a healthy (as in unhealthy) sized portion of foodage when I'm dining and Coia's certainly does not disappoint! Stuffed City. Whether it be a lazy weekend brunch/lunch or an evening meal Coia's caters for all. They still have their greasyspoon throwback - the chippy menu alongside quality Italian dishes, such as pizzas and pastas and gorgeous fresh fish of day (I had the sea bass once and it was beautiful) plus lighter bites such as omelette's (which are lovely), baked potatoes (again tasty), toasties and paninis/rolls/baguettes. The desserts are great too. Their own ice-cream (in many flavours) is lush, especially with some of that blood, I mean raspberry sauce on top. Yum. Coia's Cafe also do one of my favourite coffees ever: The Caffe Royale. This is their gorgeous coffee with whipped cream on top. It is better than I just made it sound, honest guv. They also have a tasty wine list and they serve draft Birra Moretti which is equally lovely. If you've never ventured into the dark and mysterious East End/Duke Street then please do not let this put you off coming here to try out one of Glasgow's finest Italian cafe/restaurants, you're missing out if you don't. Only minus point I have is getting a table on a weekend is sometimes a bugger but you're more than welcome to book a table so don't let this put you off as we all know that the best things come to those that wait (hopefully not for too long though...).

Then one day we were passing and starving so decided to give Coia's a whirl. Coia's is traditional Italian, it has an air of authenticity, like a proper family run Italian should. Don't expect modern, fancy schmancy decor, that isn't what they're about, expect to be greeted by 3rd/maybe even 4th generation family members who want to serve you the food they grew up with. Open from breakfast through lunch and dinner the menu has something for everyone. I, a creature of habit, opt for the calzone on every occasion (each time stating I will have something different but never do!) and once you try it you'll understand why! It must be at least 12" in diameter, has the best dough and can be filled with your choice of up to 3 fillings (meatballs, spicy chicken and mozzarella are my fav's). It's amazing and at £10.25 is a fraction of what Papa Johns or Dominos will sting you! Freshly grated Parmesan is always offered for anyone having pasta, rightly so. They also stock my favourite lemon San pellegrino soft drink, this makes me uber happy. Should you have space for pudding there's always a great selection to choose from but I would instead recommend checking out the revolving ice cream wheel...oh my is it awesome! It's part of the deli where you can buy produce to takeaway, always worth a browse. A word of warning though, you can very rarely just turn up and get seated straight away, they are constantly mobbed! The Purrple Cat Cafe was one of the first ones to come to Glasgow…read more It's a great space for the cats to play in with plenty of space to relax and enjoy a wee cuppa and cake. I have also enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea with my husband which my sista from another mista gifted me for my birthday. It was absolutely delicious. The coffee and cakes are always really good. The cats are absolutely adorable, playful and you can see that they are well looked after. On my last visit they had siamese kittens who were just the cutest. I am gutted that it's now permanently closed. They took the hard decision and closed their doors on 31st December 2025. They had done amazing over the many years and it will be sorely missed in Glasgow. They are now focusing on their new charity, Purrple Cat Rescue, and I wish them all the best in helping all the kitties who need a home.

The menu is the usual fare of burgers, sausages, chilli and nachos but its the panini's hwere this place really shines. Each one is named after a famous football staf which is a nice wee touch even if you dont know who the hell they are like me. For instance a ballotelli is chicken backon bbq and cheddar, a del piero is salsa, pepperoni, chorizo and mozzarella. I opted for the pele which was chicken shish, chilli sauce, red onion and mexicana cheese and the ingredients looked pretty fresh. The panini was lovely except for being a bit overdone and crispy. The problems are with trying to change anything in the order (second timei went). Wanted to add jalepenos and try it with mozzarella instead as this had been advised to me. The first girl looked just so bored and could barely keep her head from lolling as she took the order. The normal thing turned up and i asked to owner about the cheese and he snapped "it comes with cheese already". Told him about what i had ordered and was told rather abruptly that they dont do changes to any of their orders even though we have done a number of them before. Absoloutely horrible and quite cheeky was he. Ill stil go but i really think the owner especially needs a tune up on the attitude (the girl might just ahve been tired as it was getting on in the day so ill give her some slack.) It's like opening a new kebab shop in a small street that has 10 or more kebab shops. Today was my first time here and thought it looked pretty nice inside and looked the part but was very expensive for what you got, café latte, small tray bake & bottle of sparkling water was just short if £8. Well what's different about this place, well nothing, absolutely nothing. The same business idea that has been used for years serving the same old biscuit day in and day out, I think this is why so many business that have been here previously have failed due to not being able to think of a new idea.
