    Cafe Vesuvius 8/2012

Cafe Vesuvius is a spot offering a short list of fried appetizers, fresh organic salads, a nice list of sandwiches, and pizzas. You order at the counter and they'll bring you your food if you are dining in at one of a limited number of seats indoors, or out on their tiny patio. Drinks are self-serve in two refrigerated cases. Napkins are available by the trash bin. A single bathroom is available, but you have to ask for the key. The sweet potato fries $5.50 immediately caught my eye. Fortunately a friend was willing to share an order, because they were great! Thinner cut, they were nice and crispy and well salted. I then selected the Donna's specialty sandwich $7.50 (Breaded eggplant, roasted red peppers, grilled onions, portobello mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, pesto and mayo) on wheat, while my lunch buddy went with the Pegasus specialty sandwich $6.95 (our own home roasted turkey with pesto and fresh mozzarella) on foccacia (additional 50 cent fee), both grilled upon request, and we went halvsies. The sandwiches arrived each sliced in half with a rather large quartered pickle on the side. Plenty for lunch, especially with the order of sweet potato fries vying for stomach space. I preferred the juicy veggies, while my friend's vote went to the particularly generously pesto-ed turkey-wich. As for other dishes around the table, the Grilled Steak Tip $8.50 looked well filled, the avocado salad $7.50 was large and arrived with a full half a fresh avocado sliced in two and half a large thin pita, and the mixed grilled vegetarian pizza $17.95 (large) was touted as super toppings on a really good crispy/chewy crust.

I have tried almost everything here. Consistently delicious! Favorite sandwiches are the turkey stuffer and the chicken tuscany.

Always friendly and they have the best pizza in town and I'm from NYC/NJ so I feel I have a good benchmark from which to compare. :-)

Everyone in my family likes their pizza, especially the Shrimp Scampi pizza. It has a nice crust with a good crisp to it.

Despite going during Halloween rush season, staff were quick to seat us and kind despite that rush. Now I've been to Bambolina's before and you can either sit outside (even this time of year) and take in the passersby and their numerous themed costumes or you can sit inside and enjoy the lowered mood lighting with more wood and tan accent colors. It feels sleepy in there and for me that equates to comfort. On this particular occasion I decided to get a Rosso Pizza from the Bambolina menu and my fiance got the Pork Belly Ramen from the flip side of the menu, that second restaurant I mentioned: Kokeshi. The food overall here is very natural and fresh tasting- none of that processed jargon you get at chains. You might think having two totally different culturally distinct menus under the same roof means one gas to be better than the other or one takes a hit in quality but no, not at all. I can pleasantly say having tried from both the Bambolina and Kokeshi menus that options on each are solid. You won't be disappointed if you go here, though it is more of a surprise if you're used to having processed pizza and ramen frequently. This place tastes very fresh and we are often excited to go whenever we hit Salem.

I think it's because I used to go to Alma in the same plaza and happened to notice it one day. I was completely blown away from start to finish. He took my call asked if I've ever been there, and I said no it was my first time. He was so excited and delivered the food himself with a dessert thrown in for us to try. They also have their other location in Haverhill. They serve up a variety of pizzas, calzones, pasta dinners, salads, subs, burgers, appetizers, wings, tacos, quesadillas, burritos, bowls, chilled desserts, fried dough balls, and cooler drinks. The prices seem reasonable and there are takeout deals offered. They offer online ordering (fees) and there is a 4 percent fee for using credit card (cash - no fee). I stopped by Crusttown Salem for takeout recently. I ordered the Broccoli Alfredo Pasta ($11.99 plus tax) and a Ham & Cheese Calzone ($13.99 plus tax). My order was hot & ready to go in about 20 minutes. I headed back home and the food was still quite hot. The baked pasta dish was heavy, in a round foil container with soft fettuccine smothered with a creamy alfredo sauce, bacon pieces, and soft broccoli florets and topped with a browned layer of mozzarella cheese. The calzone was a good size, soft chewy dough pocket filled with melted mozzarella cheese, ricotta cheese & deli ham, two cups of marinara sauce provided for dipping. The food was very filling to eat and a bit salty from the meats (bacon and ham). I had leftover food for the next two nights.
