Café Tizón is a hidden jewel in ElMonte. My favorite dish is costillas de chile verde with nopales . I like the chile rellenos and of course the tamales with champurrado. It is family owned. Grandma Coco is the main cook. She cooks so delicious so is Mary and Carmen. When the owner cooks you know that the food will be so delicious with home made corn tortillas. i originally came here for the tamales, which are great, but my favorite here is their carne asada. Its very tender, i get little to no chewy pieces, and the marinade they use gives it a good flavor. the rice and beans are done very well also. i like my Mexican rice more soft. this is a place where i don't mind the rice in my burrito, normally i have other restaurants remove it because it feels like too much filler to meat ratio. What a gem!! I been wanting to try this place and had the chance to do that today. Small family owned restraunt that made you feel at home. The person at the counter handed me the menu and proceeded to tell me the specials. I only heard chili relleno ( my favorite). Served with rice, beans and a special onion sauce. Delicious!! I wish I listened to the whole special menu because they had mole too!! While eating Maria brought several home made salsas for me to try. Wow!! With a full stomach I had an urge to try the mole. I tried this place for the first time Friday and it was really good, their salsa is really good that comes with the tamales ! So I decided to try it again Saturday ! Well my husband didn't eat his, so I decided to eat them today ! This is what I found it my tamale!!! Plastic !!!! Like why???? It literally looks like a plastic baggy or something !!! So when i got there they had a large ready, (i have no problem with that) however, there was 3 tiny pieces of pork. Most of the order was hominy. Tried this place out day after Thanksgiving. The lady that took out order was very nice and helpful. Tried a few of there tamales: red pork and cheese with strips of chile. I asked for two fried eggs. We got tacos as well. Tamales stole the show. Very tasty; great meat and masa taste. Tamales were only about $2 each so we ordered some to go. Dine-in food for two, 2 coffees, and 6 tamales to go was only about $36. 4.5 stars for me! Finally found a new tamale place in the 626 which is kind of hard. Sometimes other places make tamales too dry or too much masa. WARNING: these tamales were huge! My boyfriend and I came in for our first time and ordered 5 between the two of us. Was only able to finish one each until we were already full! We both at the pork which was so good! The only thing for me personally I did not like is that the tamales were really saucy inside, I'm usually pretty picky when it comes to the texture of the food I'm eating. So extra sauce means kinda mushy plus, I usually like to add salsa to my tamales which prevented me from doing so because of the sauciness, but nevertheless the pork inside had really good flavor (: I would definitely recommend this place for their tamales! I was hooked on these jewels of masa over a year ago when they did not have a storefront and were selling tamales by word of mouth through friends and family. Now that they have, a storefront and I can get them whenever I like! About the tamales. These things are large. They are moist and succulent. Never disappointed! The tamales de chicharron with Chile verde are the BEST tamales we've ever had! This place is the best for tamales in the area. Only issue is They need to speak up and enforce mask wearing. I understand it's hard to deal with customers But if a customer walks in to your restaurant with NO mask that's disrespectful to the employees and it's putting everyone at risk! Both employees and customers. That's my only complaint. Place more sign up stating mask wearing is required before walking in to your restaurant. Cafe Tizon is on of those places like visiting a Tia that you haven't seen for a while. I stopped in one time cuz saw the tamales sign, and OMG! I had them to go, when I tried them and saw them they are big, and awesome! I had a variety, pork, chicken, cheese rajas, and my favorite corn is only prepared on the weekends. Well any kind you try you will like. I had to go back but their hours of operation are typically breakfast and lunch. Right now they are offering the Lent Menu so I had to have a Chile Relleno, it was delicious, OMG, they spoil you there, is amazing. The place is very clean. read more

Even something as simple as the fried potatoes were delicious! I've gone back with friends and family on different occasions, they all love the food too! The agua frescas are very good and refreshing, I crave them! I've also had chile rellenos, the sauce was just like my grandma used to make! Found this place on Yelp and was pleasantly surprised at how good they are. This business started as a tamale vendor at the La Puente Swap Meet and got so popular that they opened their own store. Tamale's are their specialty. My date got the breakfast burrito which she loved and I got the red chili (mild) tamale with bacon, eggs, and home fries on the side. Excellent and filling. They people are very friendly, the tamales ($2.50 each) are wonderful and homemade, as are the tortillas, the chili rellenos, the flan, and everything else. I always feel like family when I come here before covid and during covid-19. We always get a variety of tamales and some kind of soup and champurrado. The broth is always flavorful there's always a good amount of meat that tastes delicious and we come back as often as we can. My favorite tamale is the rajas tamale. It's got the perfect balance of spice and cheese.
