This place has been around for quite some time and I can't believe I've just now tried it! They are a purely vegan/vegetarian restaurant, something different for the meat eaters out there. We went for lunch during the weekday and there were a few diners, though they were not overly busy. We were seated right away but it took a minute for our server to come. However, once he came service was excellent. We were starving by that point so I got the curry bowl (tons of veggies with curry sauce on top of brown rice) and my husband order a gyro (seitan with your traditional gyro toppings with fries). We truly enjoyed everything we had. The bowl was easily a serving for two people so I have plenty of leftovers! I visited Cafe Sunflower in Buckhead on a Saturday around 5pm. At first, the restaurant was nearly empty, but by 6pm it was completely packed. We were seated in a small room by a window. The service was... just service. Nothing particularly welcoming or attentive, but we did get served, so I'll leave it at that. We ordered several appetizers to start: Impossible Wontons - I usually avoid Impossible meat, but decided to give this a try. Unfortunately, I should have trusted my instincts. The wontons were fried too hard, had no cream cheese, as expected in wontons and came. Fried Avocado Egg Rolls - These were disappointing. The filling was mostly blended avocado and cilantro, which created a gritty texture, plus a single slice of avocado in the center. The flavor was flat, and one piece of avocado was brown. Fried Brussels Sprouts - Nicely fried (blanched, then battered and fried whole), but the sweet sauce was overpowering for my taste. If you enjoy sweet flavors with vegetables, you might like this dish more than I did. For the main course, we tried the Gyro Sandwich with Seitan Chicken, and this was easily the highlight of the meal. The seitan was seasoned well, the produce was fresh, and everything came together nicely. I would definitely recommend this dish. We ended with the Carrot Cake. It was decent but not traditional--lots of chopped nuts throughout, which dominated the texture. If you love nuts, you'll probably enjoy it; if not, it might not be for you. My aunt who is vegetarian came to visit and I decided to take her here as I enjoyed my first experience at the restaurant. Upon arrival, we were instantly seated and waited on. Actually, the service was great all evening. We weren't rushed but we could always find our server. Inside the restaurant, it was peaceful. It wasn't extremely loud so my aunt and I could catch up and not have to scream. Plus, the restaurant was clean which is great of course. Now for the food! She is a vegetarian, and when we go out for dinner she's always so sweet and accommodating to the rest of us and finds things on any menu that work for her vegetarian diet. So we picked this spot just for her, so many amazingly delicious choices....i never missed a morsel of meat. We started with appetizers and wine..and it was a great indicator of what was to come. Avacado Spring Rolls, Crispy Brussels Sprouts and we shared a Harvest Salad- that thyme vinaigrette dressing is delicious... for entree we had - and shared (between the 3 of us) Orzo Eggplant Lasagna, Fettuccine Alfredo and the Sunflower Loaf (impossible meat loaf) everything was spot on flavor wise and presented beautifully. I can't say enough about my experience here - a vegan restaurant that's been around Atlanta for over 30 years is hitting the mark - I will go back ..oh and there was dessert too ...Strawberry Shortcake and Chocolate Ganache Raspberry cake... all served in a very relaxed atmosphere. We arrive promptly at 12 noon and was greeted by the host and quickly seated. Our server, Richard was amazing! He informed us of the specials of the day and he was excited about every single thing that he told us about including the two for one strawberry lemonade, drinks, and the steak special . We ordered 'Starters' and our 'Main Entree' together and the food was served promptly. Everything was delicious and we were full. Afterwards, Richard asked about desserts and we each ordered each cake so we could all taste everything. And of course in CSB fashion it was ALL delicious! We selected the only two entrees on the menu that appealed to us. They were delicious. I cannot, for the life of me, remember what they were. Not big fans of meat replacement products nor tofu. This was our problem, not the restaurant's. The cafe is quiet enough to carry on a conversation at a normal volume. This is important to me as I'm hearing impaired. The service was good. We were welcomed to ask questions and made to feel comfortable. Everything was brought out hot. Everything tasted fresh and flavourful. After my experience, I'll definitely be returning to dine in--the atmosphere is incredibly calming, with soft, dim lighting that creates a relaxing ambiance. For my order, I chose the Fettuccine Alfredo with Soy Chicken and Steamed Pot Stickers. The fettuccine had a rich, creamy sauce that surprised me--it was made from cashews! I've tried making a similar sauce at home, but it didn't turn out nearly as well. The portion was generous, lasting me three meals over two days. Awesome food in a really nice setting with good service. I'm used to NYC vegan prices, and these were about 20% less (especially for alcohol) so that made me happy. Fried avocado tacos were great (wish there was an option to add a 4th so that two people could split it evenly). Visited on a Wednesday evening to celebrate my sister's birthday. This is a small but cute café with a good amount of seating. Towards the back is a bar with wine, beer, fresh juices, and a few other beverage options but there is no bar seating. I was able to be seated while I waited for the rest of the party. I ordered the brussel sprouts and a glass of pinot noir. Those brussel sprouts were delicious with a nice crunch even though there was a sauce on them. The rest of the party slowly trickled in and ordered more appetizers. We had more brussel sprouts, dumplings, spinach and artichoke dip, spring rolls, and polpette. Dumplings were ok. Spinach and artichoke was good but we didn't care for the chips. I didn't try the spring rolls but there were no complaints from those that did. I didn't eat the meatballs from the polpette but that marinara sauce was delicious. I ordered the pesto pasta as my entree. The pasta was good but was a bit acidic which I assume was due to the artichoke and/or capers. I got a to go box and added some pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder when I reheated which helped the taste. I also got the carrot cake to go and that was really good. It's been a while since my wife and I went to Sunflower Cafe since it's a bit of drive but we are so glad we'd did. The menu had a good variety and the food was excellent. We started with brussel sprouts to share. I had the sesame soy chicken and my wife the nourishing bowl. We almost didn't finish the brussel sprouts so we could save space for the entree, but we couldn't stop. My sesame chicken was an also battered and similar to the brussel sprouts, but still delicious. Next time I'll think that through and order something else like the meat loaf. We finished with a slice of the chocolate mouse cake. We've done that for years and still love it! Love this restaurant and looking forward to the next time! Highly recommend it. read more

My cousins were in town and they are plant based (I am not) so naturally I was a little on the fence at first...But to my surprise the food tasted better than expected! The outside of the place misleads you a little with it's plain appearance, but inside it is sooo beautiful. The lighting is just right too. After 23 years of living in Atlanta, I finally made it to Cafe Sunflower. This is an Atlanta institution for vegan food, a cuisine I admittedly don't seek out, hence why it took me so long to get here. As an omnivore, I really enjoyed the food. There's a reason this place has been around so long and is so beloved. They know how to make great restaurant-quality vegan food. As far as vegan restaurants go, I think this is one that sets the standard. Thus, five stars. I remember the old space which was tucked away from Peachtree Street. The current location faces Peachtree. We visited on an ordinary Tuesday night. The restaurant was moderately busy with a combination of dine-in and takeout orders. The clientele was diverse. Young, old, families, solo diners, large groups, date nights, etc. The space is sizable and simply-yet-tastefully decorated. There are multiple indoor dining areas plus a small, uncovered, pet-friendly, outdoor patio. Plenty of parking was available next to the restaurant, though I could see the lot being more congested at lunchtime due to the other businesses at Brookwood Square. One thing that I think is great about Cafe Sunflower is the variety of menu offerings in both food and drink. They offer vegan versions of all sorts of ethnic cuisines, from Orzo Eggplant Lasagna ($20) to Spicy Pad Thai Noodles ($21). Drink-wise, they have fresh juices, plant-based milks, coffee, tea, wine, and beer. Below is what I had (all prices listed were at the time of our visit). While not significantly different from other sangrias I've had, it was still tasty and refreshing. It also went well with all of the dishes I tried. Off the bat, I was pleasantly surprised by the Avocado Spring Rolls and Quesadilla. Just terrific quality and flavor all around. Wonderful color too. Generally, the dish presentation popped here. The Avocado Spring Rolls were fresh and hearty. Delectably crispy on the outside and filled with plenty of avocado on the inside. The Quesadilla was packed with cheesy goodness and umami. I believe Cafe Sunflower's Quesadilla can rival just about any other restaurant's quesadilla, vegan or not. It was that good. Generous portion sizes here too. I'm a fan of Fettuccini Alfredo in general. Cafe Sunflower's version was excellent. Normally made with butter and Parmesan cheese, my friend and I were really impressed with how smooth, creamy, and authentically-delicious the cashew Alfredo sauce was. It was really good. The noodle texture was just right too. We were trying to decide between this entree and the Bacon Beyond Burger ($19). We went with the pasta after our server told us how heavy the burger was. I had been eyeing the Gyro Wrap on the menu before our visit. I had to get it. Out of all the dishes we tried, this one tasted the least like its non-vegan counterpart. The reason why is because of the seitan. While the slices looked just like traditional gyro meat, the taste and texture were quite different. The pita was also a little hard and overcooked. The fries were less seasoned and oily (the latter, a good thing). All that said, I didn't regret ordering this dish and I still enjoyed it. Cafe Sunflower is also known for their cakes, so we had to try some. They offered five kinds when we visited. Slices of each kind were in a display at the check-in counter. Both the Raspberry Chocolate Mousse and the Carrot Cake that we got were fantastic. These were large, rich, high-quality slices that we couldn't stop eating. The Carrot Cake had a moist, appetizing consistency while the Mousse was thick, sweet, and creamy. Jose was our server. He did a good job. As someone who does not eat dairy, I have been very excited to come to Café Sunflower for a long time. The anticipation has probably been building for way too long, and my expectations were extremely high. Unfortunately, my experience was just OK. My visit started with a comical start. I arrived exactly at opening time. I pulled in the space right in front of the door and a few spaces over someone else pulled in. As soon as I walked in the door, the person from that other car walked in a different door and directly up to the host stand to seat me. Obviously, the host was running a little late. We laughed about it. The service from my waiter was probably the best part. They were perfectly attentive and there when I needed them. The restaurant and bathrooms were clean. I was a little surprised there were no paper towels in the bathroom since I was one of the first customers when they opened. Oops! The menu had a lot of delicious looking choices. I decided to go with the pesto pasta. It was full of vegetables and made with a cashew sauce. The presentation was beautiful, but I was a little bit disappointed in the dish overall. I really love pesto and was hoping for a bit more creaminess from the cashew sauce; however, I felt it was a little overdressed, too oily, and much too tangy. This could just be a flavor preference. The broccoli was extremely hard and very large. I wish it had been cut down or cooked a bit more. The artichokes that were dressed on top of the pasta were cold. It made me feel like they were pulled out of a can and placed directly on top of the hot pasta. That made for a strange temperature contrast that I did not like. The garlic bread was very soft and floppy. When I have garlic bread, I like it to be a bit crispy. The dish was a very large and generous portion. I took my leftovers home, but to be honest, I never felt like finishing them. I wish I was more excited about the dish, but I wasn't. To start, we tried my colleague's two favorite appetizers: -Spring Rolls: Light, crispy-fried rolls filled with cabbage, carrots, onions, mushroom, and glass noodles served with sweet and sour sauce and spicy mustard. -Crispy Brussels Sprouts: Brussels sprouts fried in tempura batter tossed in Mae Ploy sauce. Both appetizers were pretty good. I liked the spring rolls better than the brussels sprouts, but anything fried will be tasty, right? For my main dish, I tried the Sesame Soy Chicken: Crispy soy chicken, broccoli, mushrooms, onions, sweet and spicy garlic sauce, and served with a side of organic brown rice. I was drawn to this dish based on the many positive reviews. Some of the reviews say the dish is too sweet for their taste and I can confirm the dish is very, very sweet. I agree with the other reviewers that the vegetables are delicious - I ate them all! I wasn't a fan of the soy chicken or the brown rice that created a soggy mess at the bottom of my plate. I was enjoying the curried veggies in sauce so much that I forgot there was rice down there! Probably the most filling of the three dishes I had. Met a friend for dinner at this place that she had been to years ago. She knows that I am plant based and relatively new to ATL so we went here. The outside does not do the inside just this. The lighting is bright enough it's not dark, but dark enough there is some intimacy. Very calming tones. The service was excellent. We were seated as soon as we entered and the waitstaff took our order immediately after we got settled. We had the crispy wontons as an appetizer. I could eat the dipping sauce with everything. Then she had the pad Thai and I had the crispy sesame chicken. Both dishes were delicious and the serving size was enough that you would not go hungry. I've wanted to come here for a couple of years but never got the chance to because I always run out of time when I'm in Atlanta. Finally went here today to catch up with a relative. We both ordered the "chicken and waffles" and I had a ginger beer and she had a smoothie. The ginger beer I enjoyed and she enjoyed her smoothie. We both were underwhelmed with the "chicken and waffles". It seems that they just fried the seitan without any seasoning. I ended up adding pepper and buffalo sauce which helped it taste better but still left a me wanting a bit more flavor.
