My colleague and I came here for dinner last night and we really enjoyed our meal. The atmosphere was really cozy, matching it's surrounding neighborhood. It was a Tuesday evening around 7:30 so it probably wasn't one of the busiest times like some of the previous reviews described. There were a couple other tables eating dinner, but our server was attentive and very friendly. To drink, we had some local Texels beer that our server recommended. We really loved it! For food, I ordered the daily vegetarian special, which was homemade lasagna. I thought it was quite tasty! It was served with a simple salad on the side. My colleague ordered a chicken dish, which he wasn't AS impressed with, but he still ate it all. Of course it came with fries and mayonnaise, which we devoured quickly. The prices were very reasonable. We paid around 45€ for the two meals and four beers. Overall, we had a great experience at this cafe in Amsterdam! read more

Delicious dinner in a cozy atmosphere. I ordered the stampot with meatballs and it was so delicious. The food arrived quickly and service was great. We split a bottle of water because they did not serve tap water. For dessert, I ordered the Dutch Coffee (made with stroopwafel liqueur) and it was yummy! We came here thinking we would get some authentic Dutch food. We placed a drink order and then after about 15 minutes they came back for our food order. We ordered an appetizer of fried foods, raw meat and cheese. Two women sat down at the table next to us around the time we placed our order. They placed an appetizer order and food order after us. After 15 minutes they received their appetizer, after another 15 minutes they received their food order. We were still sitting there with empty drinks, no food and no one that came to us to say anything about our order. There were even other people coming in after we had been waiting for half an hour that were getting their orders taken. So we left money for the drinks and left. Worst service ever!! read more

The place was packed. The tour buses just drop off groups of people throughout the day. The place was quite small, so expect some wait occasionally. Their special of the day was meatball with special carrot mixed mash potato. They served super fast because everything was already cooked. The dish tasted amazing. This's was a great experience! Cora was so helpful an recommended just the best dishes. Atmosphere cosy and typical dutch: even the music. You get A LOT of food for the price if you go and don't just order spaghetti or the dishes that are here most pictured on other reviews. Get the meats!!! Also the sides are really tasty. Go and try something different today (not just the fries). Remember you're in Europe, so things tend to be more sour (potato salad) and the mayo tastes fantastic. Try the bread plate with dips! I was first introduced to Stampot at La Falote on Roelof Hartstraat 25 and have been looking for Stampot ever since. This traditional Dutch dish is so simple and at the same time so delicious. Simply put, Stampot is mashed potatoes mixed up with what ever vegetable the cook decides to mix it with. At Sonneveld it's mashed potatoes and carrots. An excellent version of the dish and a wonderful variation to be introduced to the dish for the uninitiated. The choice today was either with meatballs or wurst. I got the wurst. And it was the best. Sonneveld is a great Dutch brasserie. Diverse selection of brews and eats. Located within the Jordaan it's a pleasant mix of locals and lost tourists. Only a two blocks from Anne Frank Huis its a great place for lunch and a beer. Word to the wise. Stampot is normally only available on the lunch menu. read more

After a tour of Amsterdam, our tour guide lead us to this restaurant to get tickets for another tour. He recommended staying and having some food as well. The place was packed (good sign). The inside of the restaurants smells of amazing Dutch food. We could not resist staying and eating there. I had a stamppot and a pea soup. Both were really good. The service was fast and food was good. It has a divey pub atmosphere. I would definitely come back next time I am in the area! A+++ would eat again! read more

We'd arrived via San Francisco in the morning and spent all day touring in the cold December weather. We were exhausted and hungry. We were the proverbial "lost tourists." We found the Sonneveld. Thank goodness. Pea soup was great; pasta bolognese was quite tasty; drinks were refreshingly generous with the vodka. Service was casual but helpful. We had the traditional Stamppot which is basically mashed potatoes with either sausage or meatballs (neither were good). I would not recommend this place and try some of the other restaurants down the street. read more

An absolutely terrific experience at Cafe Sonneveld! Delicious and authentic Dutch food, a great Dutch beer menu, and an incredibly friendly and attentive staff. My daughter had the half roasted chicken which was perfectly spiced and baked perfectly. I had the best spareribs throughout my time in Amsterdam, while my wife had the Stamppot, a traditional Dutch meal with potatoes and vegetables, and a meatball that was to die for. Food was lovely as was the atmosphere. The owner, not so great. Knowing that she had a party of 15 men coming in she sat us at a tabke cornered across from this large, boisterous party. My husband and I could not hear each other speak. When we left I wanted to speak to her. She was busy. I watched her ignore a customer who had spilled her drink. When I finally had the opportunity to tell her that she was setting her staff up for failure and treated customers poorly. Wonderful little spot we stumbled across as we walked along the canal. Bustling with diners, servers and great atmosphere. Our server was (I believe) the owner. My date had the ribs, and I had schnitzel with mushrooms. Both delicious. We had time for lots of conversation, but could easily get the attention of one of the many waitstaff when we were ready for another round. Came here to try some Dutch food! It wasn't bad but it also wasn't the best. My girlfriend and I split a stampot with a meatball and some pea soup. The meatball was dry but had a decent flavor. The soup was really thick and was full of chunks of meat. The best part was that all the food came out really fast and the servers were kind. Ok so maybe my review is because it was freezing cold and this place was open and I got a beer and it was warm. BUT as I was at the bar I could see the food coming from the kitchen and it looked good. And it looked better and better. What is that dish? I finally gave up and said we are eating here and then asked 'what is that dish' Stampot-a traditional Dutch dish - mashed potatoes mixed up with what ever vegetable the cook decides to mix it with (here it's usually potatoes and carrots) and a meat, in this case meatballs (which looks more like a piece of meat, and pork- which is a sausage). OMG!- this is wonderful! Go here- I don't care that tourist groups come here- there's a reason- the tour guides want good food- that's why! Go here for good dutch food. It's located within the Jordaan and you'll find a mix of locals and lost tourists. It's two blocks from Anne Frank Huis. But don't think of it as a tourist crappy hell- it's great food, even on a Sunday. And the staff are nice as hell- you'd have to be dealing with all these crazy tourists! read more

I returned it but they refused to give me credit for it, only wanted to exchange for a different soup. Excellent neighborhood pub/restaurant!! Food was great and the atmosphere was comfortable and warm. We learned that the very charming owner is related to the cafe's namesake Wim Sonneveld - a famed musician and entertainer in the Netherlands. (We googled him since there are photos all over and we were curious.) I would give this place my highest recommendation as a place to go. It's a local favorite and you can't go wrong. By the way, the Ribs were fall off the bone good. And the traditional Dutch dishes are crave inducing. Try the Croquettes. Loved this place. If I lived here, I'd be a regular! read more

We had a great time here in April - mainly filled with locals (an older crowd), some with their dogs, singing along with the old local standards. Very friendly and helpful servers. We enjoyed the local specials - the "Dutch stew" (stampot) and the beans and bacon dish, along with a few beer. The good food and good cheer left us smiling. read more

Stampot was one of the food items I wanted to try while in Amsterdam for 4 days in Sept. We had a very early flight the next day and opted for an early, casual dinner. We weren't sorry. My husband tried the pea soup (another must in Amsterdam) and we both had the homey, rib-sticking stampot. I could see out the window to the sidewalk table, and noticed 2 men having a beautiful-looking steak (maybe hanger steak?) meal, so their food seems to run the gamut from "mom's cooking" to Panini to bistro-type dinners. It wasn't busy or crowded when we were there (early on a Monday) and we thought it was delightful and affordable. Pleasant staff, too. read more
