This place is great! I learned about it online and it didn't disappoint. They were pretty much always busy so I'd recommend getting a reservation, but they did seem to make room for everyone who came in their door so you may get lucky. Lots of music playing throughout our visit and the locals would burst out in song when a favorite came on the radio. Did I understand anything being sung? No. Was it such a fun time? Yes! The food is also great and I'd encourage first time visitors to try some of the local cuisine like bitterballen and these breaded sausage bites I'm forgetting the name of (sorry). this restaurant was recommended to us by a hotel we stayed at. it seemed quite popular and there were no available reservations on the saturday evening we came, but we were luckily able to walk in and were seated on a bench table outside with a lovely view of the canal. we ordered the pasta bolognese, the dutch stamp pot with sausage, and a side of the vegetables and the bitterballen. the pasta bolognese was pretty solid! we'd previously never tried bitterballen and it was really unlike anything i've ever had, i didn't expect the inside to be so soft (i don't know how else to describe the texture without it sounding maybe not too good). it was pretty delicious with the mustard on the side! the dutch stamp pot was also a new dish we hadn't tried but have heard about. it kinda reminded me of bangers and mash. the "mash" component, aka the mashed potato and carrots, was unfortunately lacking in flavor. the gravy helped add a bit of flavor but overall, it just tasted very very bland. the sausage was good though. overall, we had a good experience at this restaurant! although dutch food isn't my favorite cuisine, i am glad i gave it a try and im open to trying it again! read more

The hostess was able to squeeze us in but did let us know we only had the table for about 75 minutes. So, that said, make a reservation if you can. For appetizers, the shrimp croquettes and salmon tartare were lovely. They are known for their stampot - mashed potatoes and carrots with a meatball or sausage. We ordered both to try them. The schnitzel had a great breading on it and good flavor. Dessert was an apple pie, that was slightly overdosed with cinnamon. Service was wonderful and with Dutch efficiency. Food came out quickly. Despite the many great reviews I've seen for Cafe Sonneveld, I have to say the experience was average. We arrived around 6:45 PM on a Monday & seated right away. However, it took nearly an hour to get through a bowl of soup & have our main course served. The Schnitzel Parmesan was absolutely delicious, but they up-charged 5 Euro for gravy. The spareribs were OK; nothing to write home about. They also tried to up-charge side dishes, so beware if you're asked about items because they try to sneak away them in. We were not checked on once during the meal & had to hunt down the server to get our check. When it came time to pay, he was nowhere to be found, so we hunted him down again before paying & leaving. Our shore excursion walking trip to Jordaan in Amsterdam ended for us at this cafe. Apple pie was included in the tour with either coffee or tea. I ordered iced tea and was told I needed to pay extra for that. I thought tea is tea but guess not. We paid same as the men who chose to quench their thirst with beers. Nice bar like atmosphere. The restrooms were constantly busy with both men and women heading into the closed door. The cafe is located close to Ann Franke's house. We left our tour and went off on our own. We reserved at Sonneveld because we saw it hyped up so many times on social media. It's clearly a favorite spot amongst locals - it was packed. You will have to have a reservation. For the meal, everyone ordered something different (5 dishes), and we all enjoyed the food immensely. The meatball stamppot and the chicken with peanut sauce were the standouts and the portions were HUGE. However, we waited nearly an hour and a half for our food, frequently had to request additional drinks and were often ignored. Once we finished our meal, we requested the check four separate times and were ignored. After another 30 minutes of waiting, the owner finally brought it. Couldn't help but feel a bit annoyed after spending 2.5 hours in the restaurant and this unfortunately negatively impacted our experience here. All in all, the food was wonderful!! But if you're looking for an engaging, service-forward experience you may find yourself waiting quite a while. Not the party we expected, but a fine meal of Dutch staples. read more

Visited this restaurant back in 2019 and it was really, really good. A couple of us had Stampot for the first time and really liked it. They have a good selection of beers, some local. The server we had was very friendly, very efficient. Actually tried to stop in here again a few weeks ago and they were so busy, they couldn't take us, which tells how good they are. We asked a local where to get typical (but good) local style food and we were pointed here without hesitation. This place didn't disappoint and the prices were reasonable. It was so good we decided to go back our last night. A reservation may be a good idea depending on the time of year. The first visit we started with Vlammetjes then had the ribs and stamppot with meatball. This was our first taste of Vlammetjes, they were good. We later learned these were no different than what other bars serve but they're not always easy to find and are worth a try. The entrees were excellent. My wife enjoyed the ribs so much she got them again on the second visit while I got the chicken. Each entree was plenty of food and we left stuffed. Staff was friendly and no nonsense. I ordered the traditional Dutch plate which I forgot the name but it's basically mashed potatoes mashed with seasonal vegetables (in my case was carrots) and I ordered the meatball while my friend ordered the sausage. The sausage tasted good but for sure I loved the meatball more but thats just my preference. My boyfriend ordered the ribs. He thought the ribs were good tasted more similar to American ribs.
