Frozen rain today and I was downtown in Grand Junction. Cafe Sol was there in front of me and I was so happy...like seeing an old friend. I don't get downtown a lot and when I do, I opt for something my daughter will eat. Cafe Sol is not her favorite but it's one of mine. So, frozen rain and I was thinking sandwich and soup. Cafe Sol has daily soups; some standards and some that boggle the mind. Today, they offered a Borsht or Russian beer soup, Cheesy Corn & Bacon chowder, split pea and ham soup, and a black bean habanero tortilla soup. They all sound unique and different, don't they? Upon looking at the menu though, the salads kept calling my name...and I am NOT a salad person. The salads at Cafe Sol though---they are dream-worthy! Today, I ordered the salad and sandwich combo. Order any salad and sandwich. I ordered the Blue Fig salad and Chicken Avacado panini. The salad, topped with blue cheese, sunflower seeds (usually almonds), prosciutto, dried figs, and dressed perfectly with a Palisade peach ginger vinaigrette...delicious. And remember I'm not a salad person...but this salad, mama Mia! The Cafe Sol salad, beet salad, Wild West, and Cobb salads are also all good. When in season, the Strawberry Salad is sweet and savory goodness. Their paninis are HUGE! The Chicken Avacado panini (topped with bacon and cheddar) was perfectly pressed and toasted, with yummy gooey cheese blending with the avacado for a warm smile-inducing happiness on this cold day. Summer or winter, Cafe Sol is great! There are usually three different waters offered at no cost. I had the cucumber orange water today. They also offer beer and other beverages. The restaurant is open and has lots of seating. The patio seating is wonderful when it's warm outside. There are cloth "napkins" for every costumer which I think is so cute and perfect for Cafe Sol. It's clean and inviting. The cost is a little pricey but the portions sizes are always big. Even my half sandwich and salad today, was enough for me to have leftovers tomorrow...lucky me! I bet you could share with a friend if desired. They offer a catering menu with different portion sizes which I've used when supplying the school teachers with food. The hipster service can be frustrating sometimes, but if you get lucky, you'll get someone who is attentive and friendly like I did today. This is one of those healthy trendy hippie-ish places using quality ingredients that have been popping up (especially in California, Arizona and Colorado) over the past several years. It's slightly pricey for lunch but I personally think the quality is well worth it. I just stopped by driving from Denver to Telluride and didn't realize that it was in the downtown Grand Junction area. This was not a problem since it was a Saturday, but I suspect that parking might be an issue and that the restaurant might be a lot more crowded on weekdays. I had the Cafe Sol salad, which had beets, goat cheese, nuts, field greens and banana bread croutons, and I thought it was quite good. The small size was as large as many restaurants' regular salads, and the large would have been plenty to take home for dinner (I would have asked for the salad dressing on the side though). The flavored waters are a nice touch. Modern, well-kept, pleasant decor. I would be inclined to go back again when driving through Grand Junction, though I would wonder about the parking situation during the week. Probably I will give it a try though. read more

Cafe Sol has some of the best food in Grand Junction, very fresh. I love the salads (kale & seasonal peach they currently have) and their version of a Ruben Sandwich. They have reusable napkins and utensils which is think is cool. Only complaint would be the long line and wait time. You need a solid hour or more between standing in line and finishing your food. I appreciate the free water they offer, it usually has cucumber/mint/berries in it. read more

Cool little spot in the small downtown area of Grand Junction. I immediately was drawn to it for my requirement of soup with the added benefit of sandwich to accompany said soup. It's an order-at-the-counter type place. So I walked in and started perusing their menu. There was some really legit options. I chose the turkey panini with the pork green chili. Man was I not disappointed. The soup was flavorful and the pork was tender. The tortillas on top added that extra crunch. The sandwich was well done. The combination of flavors was just right and I feel like it hives with the soup selection. Just enough bread to convey the tasty delicious turkey bacon avocado cheese bits to your mouth. I loved finding this little gluten free sandwich shop in Grand Junction! This place seems straight out of LA with its healthy menu offerings and hipster decor. It reminds me of a non-chain Panera, with a more neighborhood vibe. All the paninis can be made with gluten free bread, and it's celiac-safe because they'll toast them in the oven rather than the panini press. Best of all, the sandwich I had actually tasted good too! Honestly, this place was a bit of a god send for me on a two-day road trip from LA to Chicago (and back). For miles and miles, it was generic fast food, and stopping here made my day that much better. It was so good that I made sure to plan my return so I'd be passing through Grand Junction during business hours. And you can bet if I'm ever in the area again, I'll be back for another gluten free panini. read more

This is my boyfriend & I's go to lunch place in downtown GJ. We do live downtown so we walk half a block to this location, but it is delish. Very cute farm to table atmosphere and cloth torn napkins rolling your silverware, so cute! They always have some really cool soup specials (great for a wintery town), and some type of daily dessert. The Service: The setup of Cafe Sol is a relaxed hybrid of counter service and table service. The staff were friendly and helpful, patient and attentive. The Food: We had the American breakfast and one of their specialty quiches. The quiche was made with tomato, cheddar, bacon. It was light and tasty, served with fresh local fruit (the peaches were outstanding). The American breakfast was two eggs, seasoned nicely, with breakfast potatoes (a hint of cinnamon in there), some thick multigrain toast, peach jam, and butter. They have a contemporary menu. Portion sizes are generous. Ingredients are fresh and there are a ton of healthy options. But lack of seasoning and some bad bread just killed it for me. Given the high cost of everything on the menu, there's not a lot of room for big blunders. Quinoa was a soggy mush. Tasted of particularly bland cucumber. Seriously, a pinch of salt? A few cracks of black pepper? Sandwich bread was incredibly dry. When I bit into it a single slice came apart in two seperate layers with a lot of air inbetween. Not pleasant. The meats, cheeses and sauces were tasty and well-balanced. Otherwise is was an all right time. The patio is an attractive feature, and the service and atmosphere were enjoyable.
