So the Eagles Lighthouse Cafe is no more. Let this be a eulogy then. For starters, let's go with…read morethe praise. The food was great. Nice down home cookin', reasonably priced. Now for this. The place was festooned with Bible quotes, Biblical vignettes in the windows, and the three flags of Christian Nationalism garishly out front - the US flag, the Israeli flag, and the nationalist "Plea To Heaven" flag. All paradoxically in tatters and never taken in for good keeping. It did not give off a welcome Biblical vibe though - just one of "agree with us or take it down the road." The kitchen and counter personnel were usually fairly nice people who gave great service. The owners, when they were present, gave off something entirely different. Like you were inconveniencing them by being there. Short tempered and terse if they took your order. If you read the earlier comments, you will hear of them coming unhinged and screaming at some customer about something either overblown, or imagined. They refused to pay their employees properly, with something even close to a living wage. When the Hawaii legislature finally hiked the minimum wage, they stuck out an alarmist notice written in childish green marker that they were sooooo sorry but they "had to" raise their prices a bit because the mean old Hawaii house raised the wage. And of course taxes under Biden, yada yada. In the end, the ELC was a victim of the owners' disposition. It's a very bad business model indeed, when politics, religion and greed actually get in the way of doing business. My best wishes to the employees, I really hope they can find something decent to replace this experience. For the self righteous, sanctimonious greed of the owners and operators - as Jesus said, "Yeah verily, you have your reward."

The animals are clearly well loved--there were baby pigs, goats (one with her adorable kids), huge tortoises, a beautiful dairy cow, baby bunnies, and the sweetest donkey named Arthur who looked like he was smiling! My kids had such a great time. Their son Isaiah gave us the best little tour--he was so knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend this place for a wholesome, fun family outing!

Service started off friendly and attentive, but after large parties arrived, the staff seemed overwhelmed and probably was not on their A-game. The burger and fish and chips were both good. However, the "local" dishes like the saimin and kalua pork were disappointing and didn't quite meet our expectations. The restaurant has a casual, chill vibe with lots of free and convenient parking, which made it an easy stop while exploring the area. Overall, a decent option, especially if you're in the mood for burgers and fries but we would probably skip the local favorites next time.

The food, service, and ambiance all deserve 5 stars. A special shoutout to our waiter, Adam, who provided outstanding service and made our evening even more enjoyable. Despite being in a popular visitor destination, the restaurant doesn't feel touristy. Instead, it has a welcoming atmosphere that attracts both visitors and locals looking for a great meal. Parking is free and convenient, and there's also a charming little shop next to the restaurant that's worth browsing before or after dinner. Highly recommended if you're visiting the Volcano area.

Went in to purchase a drink and some soap and stayed in the parking lot for a couple minutes after the purchase. The BIG lady (she can't be missed) came out extremely hostile and territorial like a dog asking why we were parked there after we had purchased something. We informed her we had just purchased something and were collecting ourselves before hitting the road. I informed her we could leave if it bothered her. Her attitude and emotional regulation were so poor, she quickly escalated and started threatening to call the police because it was "private property" after I told her she could have just calmly told us paying customers to leave. She proceeded to insult me and called me a bitch after I did not allow her to disrespect me. Anyway, she wasn't very aloha to say the least. I can't imagine how she treats other employees. Sending her aloha

The offering of local tropical flowers may be the best part of their inventory. They are beautiful and inexpensive. Inside, the inventory is lacking and pricy. The aisles are tight and with some shelves half empty. They have a decent, but pricy, selection of wine, spirits and beer. Then there is a limited selection of various household needs. I have never found what I was looking for on two visits. The staff is friendly. And the place has a lot of good character. But they need to ramp up the inventory.

Typical cafeteria offerings: liquid scrambled eggs (pretty bland), very thin bacon, steamed & fried rice, and crispy potatoes. They had Portuguese and breakfast sausage on a couple days. The fresh fruit was canned pineapple and the sliced melons were old. We did save a lot of money eating here but if I had to pay I would not eat here and drive to town for breakfast. We tried the prime rib and salmon one night for dinner and it was okay. There plenty of seating and the dining area is pretty comfortable. They had a coffee and drink station which was nice.

You're on a military reservation so manage your expectations. Like most places around here, it closes at 8pm on Friday so make sure you go early. Might be earlier on weekdays. Lots of easy to prepare, short order stuff on the menu. It's a no frills spot that'll get the job done. And it's totally fine. I had dinner here tonight and the fish & chips were just fine. Crispy batter on the fish. Crunchy fries. Salad bar. And some random dessert for $18. The staff was super super friendly. The cook had my little buzzer going before I finished my salad. On the weekends--well at least Friday--there is live music in the adjacent bar. So you can just take your food to the other room and have a drink with some music or sit in the cafeteria and listen to whatever is on the radio.

At first glance, it may look like other small, local shops, with locally made products and a few interesting goods to browse. (I ended up buying the last 'I'iwi bird pin they had on display, which I loved!) After reading some other reviews, I realized we may have just gotten lucky because the owner happened to be in that day. Let me say this upfront: they advertise slow black coffee and they mean it! The owner (Brian?) takes his time with each customer, chatting with you to understand what you're looking for and making some suggestions. It's clear he enjoys both his craft and engaging with customers. It was not very busy while we were there, which added to that relaxed, Hawaiian vacation vibe. We really enjoyed the conversation with him and even walked away having learned a few new things. We took our coffee and other purchases to enjoy on the bench outside, along with some stone cookies from nearby. (There were also additional tables and chairs available on a side patio.) Overall, we loved both the experience and the coffee, and we will definitely plan to stop by again the next time we are in the area!
