Super small breakfast burrito (tasted good though) and the lady at the counter just had it sitting there behind the bar. We physically had to ask the cook for it because it was just sitting there (we waited 20 minutes before we asked and it was empty in there). She was lazy. Restrooms were clean. I'd go there again if I was in a pinch for time and needed to grab something premade. read more

Very convenient location to wait for patients. Clean, open and airy, tv with fake fireplace. Outdoor and indoor dining. Very nice employees and nice variety of food. Had breakfast first and then taking food to go for my husband. I think he'll love the red lentil stew. read more

I purposely planned an hour between doctor visits at 510 and 520. The reason was so that I could have a nice lunch at 538. The menu is very very basic however I had no problem choosing a hamburger I really had my mindset on. I was not disappointed! The burger itself was juicy and not overdone and the bun was tender yet sturdy enough to hold together while I ate the entire burger. The size was so large that I couldn't even finish the entire burger. The fries were tasty, not over seasoned, and somewhat crispy. Not as crispy as I would have liked, But they were still very good. Overall, it is a nice little space to eat an enjoyable lunch. read more

Okay - so here we go. I keep coming back to this place and being disappointed. Unfortunately working in the health center - it's not easy to find other close and quick options. Food is for sure overpriced. I usually get a veggie burrito and if I attempt to have them add a little bit of spinach (literally a pinch) they charge me a dollar. Mind you that I'm opting out of meat (sausage/bacon/or ham) and they still charge me a whole dollar for a pinch of spinach. You would think they would give me some extra care as I've been coming here for about 2 years. Also for a long time, I don't even know how many times they've messed up on the veggie burrito. In their pre-prepared chopped veggies by the grill, they have onion, tomatoes, potatoes, and mushrooms. The burrito comes with hash browns. When I first used to get burritos- I kept getting both the gross cubed potatoes (that did not taste good) and hashbrowns. I don't know about you but I don't want to double down on potatoes.. so I asked them time and time again - please leave out the potatoes and give me only hashbrowns. I think I've walked down again at least 10 times to get my burrito remade before they finally realized. So today, I got hungry and was looking for a cheap burrito option - so I came here again - and this time when I got the salsa - which is usually the only thing good here - was congealed and gross. It did not taste good today. I told the girl who's working there and she told me that it's frozen and just to mix it up. It's the first time I've gotten the salsa like this - congealed with the imprint of the lid on the salsa. A long time before this, I also used to get coffee. But I stopped when I got my americano for the first and the last time here. The older Asian lady helped me that day and she was not pleasant AT ALL. There were espresso grounds in the coffee, and I asked her if it could be remade because it has grounds in it and she said that it's supposed to be that way because it's an espresso drink. Never in my life, have I had an espresso drink with grounds in them. Don't try to fool me, I've worked at a coffee shop before! They need to stop cheaping out. Many of my coworkers stopped going there because of the quality of the food that keeps going down. 2 years ago, their salad used to have more romaine - now it's half iceberg lettuce - which is the cheapest and least nutritious greens on the planet. Hidden behind bushes and parking structure, next to Hoag's 510 bldg. Ordered breakfast burritos and requested crispy bacon, to which the gal said with a smile 'yes, we can make it crispy' We then waited while 3 orders came in after us were picked up. After 15 min, I asked one of the cooks if there was a problem with our burritos, and watched as he checked the orders and then pulled 2 premade burritos from a cooler and heated them up. We did get a 'sorry' for the delay, the bacon wasn't crispy, but we were hungry and thought they were tasty. read more

Today to celebrate change of management, Cafe 538 had free all you can eat Taco bar, Pozole and Italian Club! Scooorreeee! I thought the pastor was the best but the chicken and carne were good too (you know I had to try them all)! My colleagues and I are excited by the new management and changes ahead! I work nearby and get a last-minute lunch from here now and then when I wasn't able to bring lunch. It's super convenient to just walk over and get a relatively cheap lunch. I've tried a deli sandwich from them first and it was quite disappointing BUT I've discovered that my favorites are the turkey panini, tomato basil soup (usually only Mondays and Fridays) and the breakfast burrito. The breakfast burrito is simple but to die for. It comes with scrambled eggs, meat of your choice (I get bacon, cheese and hash browns and it's piping hot and keeps you full for hours! I've been coming here for five years due to the proximity from work. I don't understand how you could not allow an a la carte option with the daily lunch special. Often times the main dish doesn't require the amount of sides provided, not to mention some customers may dislike an option. Why not allow a profit for your establishment instead of refusing a sale. 'I am extremely sadden that I have to write the following review as I have always loved the food here and it has been one of my favorite places to eat . I have been ordering food from this place for a group of clients at my workplace over the past couple of months and have been very satisfied with the food. Today, when I ordered 4 paninis and 2 salads one of my clients who had one of the 2 salads, found what looks like a metal screen that looks like it might be from a sink, in her salad. I called Cafe 538 and asked to speak with a manager. I spoke with Leo who said he was the manager and calmly explained to him the situation. He immediately implied that it couldn't possibly be them and implied that we were making this up. In the past I have worked in the food industry for many years and am well aware that people can make things up, however, there are MANY cases where these things absolutely happen. I was taken back at the fact that there was NO remorse, NO apology but rather a finger pointed at me for something that they did which is a HAZARD. Leo left me feeling violated with the lack of concern and care for the matter. Being that I was not heard and felt zero respect, I asked if I could speak with a manager above him. He told me that he would have to ask and see if they would want to talk to me. I explained to him that surely they would want to hear about the safety hazard and he didn't even give it a thought. I am blown away at the HORRIBLE customer service, management and lack of concern for food safety. I really hope that they start being more cautious about food handling and food safety moving forward so that this kind of thing doesn't happen to someone in the future resulting in a serious injury. It's unfortunate that I have more concern for their customers' health and safety rather than the manager Leo. read more

Randomly walked by this cafe on the way to parking structure after a Dr. appointment. Never knew it existed. Ordered the Mediterranean Wrap. It was AMAZING! It's the kind of meal you think about days later. I had zero expectations, but this wrap was outstanding. I highly recommend it. Regular cafeteria food- fresh though. Horrible music! They replay flutes or some instrumental music that is so annoying and depressing. Lunch time is busy with typical medical staff and walk ins, but trust me,you will want to leave as soon as possible. It's like you have to tolerate the noise while you eat.... hmm,maybe that's why there so few who sit and dine. read more

Eat here for breakfast every time I visit this medical complex (about 5 times now). Always great line chef, diner type breakfast. Burrito with sausage or other meats includes fresh, fluffy scrambled eggs and hash browns for only $3.50, all heated with a little crispiness in a panini press. Salsa tastes fresh, but could be a little spicier. Bagel sandwich is also a favorite. Friendly staff and quick, made-to-order food. read more

Cafe 538 is a warm, friendly, and delicious cafe that happens to be located on the Hoag Medical Complex. Kendall is a friendly, warm, and professional. She makes some great menu recommendations. I have had the pleasure of sampling the breakfast menu. The breakfast burrito is quite tasty, the English muffin breakfast sandwich is terrific, and the made to order omlettes are delicious. This café is across from the Hoag Health Center buildings at 500-520 Superior Ave. Service is provided with a smile. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with a (thankfully silent) TV inside usually tuned to ESPN or CNN. The food is quite good and is a fantastic value for the money: the special of the day usually runs about $7, including a soda, and is quite filling. Examples are gyros with rice and salad, or tacos with rice and beans. I like this place enough that I'd stop in even if I didn't work right across the way-- and that's a rarity for a hospital-run eating establishment! read more

Horrible customer service - I ordered oriental salad paid extra to have a protein. I selected chicken. Their special of the day was fajitas. When they handed the salad it had seasoned chicken I questioned if the chicken was same as prepared for the fajitas they said no. I went to eat the sales the chicken had a spicy seasoning on it. I called to question - the owner was short and responded all the chicken comes with seasoning. Spicy chicken on a oriental salad is a flavor conflict. I had the veggie panini and it was delicious! Great portion, yummy and decent price. The staff are friendly and efficient, the place is clean and modern. Perfect place to have lunch if you have to be at Hoag or any medical building around this area. There is also free parking next to it. The cafe 538 is a new breakfast and lunch spot in between the Hoag medical offices. I work at Hoag and love the cafe! The owner and staff (Karen, Kendall) are awesome!!! They have great items on the menu and weekly lunch specials. If you work nearby they have a frequent buyer stamp card and you can earn a free item after 10. I recommend the cafe for your breakfast or lunch needs or both! read more

Update (3/27/2017) Better quality- attentive- and they seem to want to make it a great little place for everyone Hoag- employees, patients, visitor, and neighbors. So glad....thank you for being that for all of us. ______________________________________ Something has changed. . 1.) New Management took over on 8/1/2016. Sold the business. 2.) Some of the soups are a different recipe; Specials are now lower quality and skimpy 3.) Prices have gone up. Advice: Order thru online as the prices are cheaper ( I guess until the new owners sees this review).. 4.) Same wonderful staff- always helpful and smiling- from the cashier to the cooks. I am writing in the hopes things will improve. It is the closest lunch spot for the majority of people who work in the area. read more

I had a good experience! I am a patient at Hoag Medical Center so I have never been here so I did not realize the sandwiches came with mustard. They were very considerate about re-making the sandwich for me. The owner and staff were all very courteous and the cafe is very clean. It's not gourmet but it's also not terribly expensive. Now a days, $7 for a sandwich and side is not bad. Especially with the fruit side the same price as the other sides. read more

We were so smitten after those first two dishes that we threw all caution and control to the wind. I asked staff to surprise us with one of the dishes recommended earlier. Out came the Grilled Octopus Al Pastor. Nice char, tender bite, and a tangy sauce. For dessert: the Baklava Cheesecake. Lightly spritzed with aromatic rose water, ultra sweet, and unapologetically indulgent. Beautifully crafted and shareable, though you may not want to. Beyond the food, the ambience really shines. Intimate, classy, and whimsical, with a charming playlist. Ideal for date nights or special celebrations. Service was outstanding. Warm, attentive, and passionate. Staff enthusiastically walked us through the menu and offered recommendations. Our server was on point. Water glasses were never empty, plates cleared promptly, and everything flowed seamlessly. An incredible experience from start to finish. I couldn't stop yapping about the duck and pork belly since our first dinner here. So we came back the following weekend! I guess they saw me using my hands to eat their delectable empanadas, they brought a plate with warm towelettes and lemon over. Pleasantly surprised and impressed. Highly recommended, and will definitely be back. We come down to the OC a few times a month to see friends and escape our regular routine.

The Meddock Melee sandwich used to come on this great artisan squaw bread that resembled a square ciabatta bread. It had great bite and crispy corners that added texture. Now it comes on a much flimsier roll similar to the 'Cheesecake Factory' brown bread they sell in the grocery aisle. Sliced turkey also feels like a lower quality cut. It used to have texture and now it tastes like thin sliced /water infused prepackaged grocery turkey. Rosemary fries used to be slightly thicker, super crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Now they're a lower quality shoe string fry that's on the dry side. Maybe they're between suppliers? But if these are cost cutting measures, the difference is very much palpable.
