Then there are the following decades of my relationship with K-town that are filled with cock-eyed naivete and black-out fun. In the heyday of K-town (the 90's - early 2000's) people loved this town and its somewhat sovereign existence in the center of a horizontal metropolis. The best part of it was that only those who knew, knew about this paradise, filled with good times, pure or hedonistic. Ask those who came through and they'll all have different pieces to the question, "What's your favorite part about Koreatown?" Some will say the karaoke bars & girls, some will talk about the clubs, booking or otherwise and some will talk about the best part of the night. The beginning & end of the night. That's when you go to the "Sool Jib," loosely translated to the 'drinking house.' You start the night here with a pre-party of drinks and tapas and then you end the night here with the night cap and munchies. There were and are many great ones in K-town, including OB Bear and Prince but you'd be surprised to find out that there is one in Buena Park that is better than most if not all of the ones in K-town. I know, it sounds crazy and maybe it is. But Cafe Gunul is pound for pound the best Sool Jib in Southern California, if you're judging based on food, service and ambiance, as long as your type of ambiance is chill. But what do I know? Great spot! Their serving is huge and is meant for sharing. Greasy food, probably best to pair with alcoholic drinks. We tried their whole fried chicken (the first one on the fried chicken list). Beware, this is not your typical battered Korean fried chicken. This is a whole bird split apart and served with a side of cabbage salad and pickled jalapenos. The chicken is different from my expectation but it is so tender and delicious! The skin is so crispy and the bone falls apart so easily. The cabbage salad is crisp and refreshing. Dip the breast meat into the salt/pepper mixture, it's necessary. We also tried the kimchi fried rice. They have a huge serving with either one or two egg on top. It's greasy and I wish it is more sour but delicious regardless and makes a great pairing for drinks. The service is nice. Make sure to use the button on the table otherwise they won't come for your bill, which is so nice because you can talk forever and ever without feeling bad. Ambiance is great, it's cozy. Came here a second time with my mom and the server remembered us and our order WOW! We ordered muscle soup, seafood pancake and garlic chicken. The muscle soup looks very simple with a clear broth and spring onions but it is soo flavorful and filled to the brim with muscles. The garlic chicken comes out piping hot and stays crispy without being greasy. It is mild and sweet with mountains of crispy garlic and seasoning. this is definitely for the garlic lovers: They serve it with some daikon and shredded cabbage. Lastly our seafood pancake was cooked perfectly, some places makes this dish either soggy or burnt with rubbery seafood but theirs was perfect. The seafood was tender and balanced well with the veggies. It had shrimp, squid, and muscles inside. They serve this with a tangy soy sauce with chilis and sesame seeds. (Not spicy) The portions are really big and they have a lot of preset food combos, mostly to pair with drinks. It seems like people come to chat and unwind with friends. The severs don't make you feel weird about sitting for a long time and are very attentive. I forgot our servers name but he is always so helpful and nice. Don't be afraid to ask about menu items he'll give you great recommendations! The parking lot is huge so parking shouldn't be an issue. Would visit again 10/10 for sure. The owners and the staff were very welcoming and cheerful. We were having hard time deciding the menu but JJ (staff) helped us through our order and he nailed it. We started off with the garlic fried chicken which JJ recommended and I don't think there is a chance of not liking the menu. While being crispy is was also very tender and went along great with the beer! Then we tried tteok-bok-ki, which is rice cake with spicy traditional korean sauce. I'm not very good with spicy food but it was perfect for me. We also ordered bo-ssam with fresh oysters. I didn't try the oysters but the meat was tender and soft. According to my friends' the oyster went great with the sauce. Fish cake soup was deep and we regretted not ordering Soju, as it would have went so well together. Our last menu was ggalbijjim. We were actually very full by the time the menu arrived. But boy was I wrong. Great food! All the menus were in huge portions and we were super full. My dad and his friends came to Cafe Gunul tonight after having a great day, but sadly, one of the waitresses ruined their night. They stopped by Cafe Gunul just to get some drinks and their bill came out to $75 and they tipped $15 which is 20%, but I guess 20% tip wasn't enough for the waitress. She walked up to the group and said that they should pay her $20 instead of $15. Seriously? 20% isn't enough? She had the audacity to walk up and ask for another $5 after she received 20%. I hope she understands that her actions affects the owner of the business more than it affects her and I really do hope that she stops this nonsense. I've noticed that servers these days ask for more tip, but obviously, the economy isn't that good right now, prices have increased, and many are not willing to pay more than 20% tip on top of the already increased prices. I went to Cafe Gunul too, but I am not going back again after hearing what happened tonight and will not be recommending. Thanks for your service! read more

If you want good bar food to go along with a nice drink of soju, beer, or makgeolli, you should definitely try out Cafe Gunul if you're in the area. Cafe Gunul is located in the Zion Market Plaza where the form Sobok (now soft-opening Cafe Bora) is. It's nice to go with a smaller group (probably no bigger than 4-5) from what I noticed as I went with one friend. There wasn't a wait when we arrived but it started to get busier once we were seated. We settled to get one of the combo sets which (I think it was either C or D) included the bossam + raw oysters + soju or makgeolli (we settled for peach soju for an additional cost) and cheese corn. Oh man, that CHEESE CORN was amazing. It was probably one of the best cheese corn I had and usually, I can't even tell what the difference it is from each place I've tried it. The cheese used here were particularly stringy and still had a bit of stretch even as it cooled down while the corn wasn't too soggy or softy. I liked the addition of small bits of veggies to give it a different texture and color to the dish as well. The bossam was really good especially with the cabbage, carrots, jalapenos, kimchi, etc you had with it that you can wrap. The pork belly soft and melted in your mouth while working perfectly with the other condiments. Soju was a great choice to really cut down the greasiness at time. It was a bit pricey, but that's expected for these kinds of places but they did post up a notice about having Happy Hours from Sun-Thursday from 5-7PM I believe (I could be wrong). The service was great and they had the button at each table so you can press it in case you need anything. Personally, I wouldn't mind stopping by again if I was in the area with some good company for a round of good drink, food, and good vibes. read more

I love this Korean bar. It definitely is an older crowd here which I don't mind. I prefer this than somewhere with underaged teens trying to get alcohol with their fake IDs. I have been here many times in the past year, but this is very first time that I am writing a review. Just the very best all around Chicken Tongdak Place with one of the best selections of the Korean beer including two OB's-Kloud and Premium Gold and Hite on tap. The beer menu is very good but the best part is that this is one of only two or three authentic Korean Restaurants in the entire Orange County where you can literally have the Original Tong-Dak. Please, you must try their golden, crispy Tong-Dak (literal translation of whole chicken). At least try once. If you are little skeptical, then try the smaller one. The excellent crispy whole chicken will come out as one whole chicken which went through hours of Rotisserie and after all of the greasy fat has been drained and meat cooked well, they put it on the frying pan to make the skin extra crispy. The meat will fall off the bone. Since the chickens are young and small, they are tender. I can have one whole thing. They give you generous portion of salad and few pickled Japapeno peppers on the same plate. The second dish that I love to eat over there is Due-Bo-Ki. It is a semi-spicy Korean rice cake which has a shape of thin sausages but made up of special rice powder and few tasty compressed fish cakes in triangles and exceptional sauce as well as other vegetables all mixed in semi-sweet and red hot Go-Chu-Jang hot pepper sauce all mixed in perfect tasty mixture. It comes out in a huge bowl and feeds four people in one sitting. They are $15.99 but with Ramen noodle, it costs $17.99. I recommend one with Ramen noodle. Third one is simply my favorite dish with beer. It is called Kimchi Tofu. It has several thick slices of half cooked tofu topped with stir fried Kimchi and thick Korean bacons. It is literally to die for. It is excellent in taste and texture. The porkbelcy is so perfect with lightly pan fried Kimchi, you cannot go wrong with this choice. However, for what you get, it is pricey but worth the money. The wait staffs are quite polite and friendly and answers the bell at your table. One my favorite restaurant in Buena Park, but it may not be well suited for everyone since I had mix feedback from different people ive taken over the years. Most of their food goes along with beer and/or soju. Aside from that, I think most of their food has been wonderful. The servers are quick and attentive. Togo is pretty quick since I have been ordering togo quite often during covid (have been satisfied on how quick they are). This is a unique experience, its worth the visit. Context: Friday night, full house and here with 2 young kids. Summary: As other reviewers have stated, the food here is good for Korean bar food. Service not so much and price is on high side. We arrived at 7 and were seated quickly, however for 20 tables (inside and out) there are 2 servers. We waited 10 minutes to order (even after ringing the service button at our table multiple times), it took our food 45 mins to come out, and then took almost 10 minutes to get our check. Also, a pet peeve of mine...If I'm ordering alcohol, don't drop a bottle opener on the table and have me open my beer, I can do that at home (see pic). This place has been here for the longest time. It's a pretty popular spot for middle-aged Korean men who want to smoke and drink after work. I came for the first time in years for some beer and food and it was ok. We were seated right away and ordered some udon (not sure why we ordered this of all things) lol. Udon was good, nothing special. We also ordered Kimchi pork fries with cheese on it which were probably my favorite thing here. Good amount of fries but kimchi/pork to fry ratio was off. By the end of it, we had a bunch of fries and wished there was more kimchi to go with it. They have a wide alcohol selection of soju, sake, beer, etc. The main thing I wasn't a fan of was the cleanliness of the place. The ledges were dusty and obviously haven't been wiped and the menus were pretty gross. Clearly no one wipes them. Also, our server didn't really check up on us. Any time we needed something, we used the doorbell button thing on the table which I tried to avoid doing cuz it can get annoying. But we weren't checked on or glanced at at all so it was necessary.
