A business colleague invited me to lunch here yesterday. I had never heard of it; all he said was "do you like Cuban food?" Um...yeah! When we came in, the place was rather packed. Had trouble finding a table but were shown in by the hostess. Because of the busy-ness, it took a few minutes before we were approached by the waiter for a drink order, but it wasn't egregiously long. He returned right away with our drinks -- legit ice tea. I'm a real critic when it comes to iced tea, I'll tell you! I couldn't get past trying the Cubano. Have to admit it's my first "test" of whether a Cuban place is real. I was NOT disappointed! First the sandwich is BIG. I only ate the smaller half of mine and was QUITE full. Sandwich was well toasted, well "squished," and had a great ratio of meat/cheese, etc. I had one piece of pork that fell out so I was able to taste it on its own and I have to admit, it was REALLY tasty. My only disappointment was that the sandwich could have been spicier, but I can always customize that next time. Now, the fries that came with the sandwich were THE BOMB! Hot, fresh, crispy...even after they had been on the table for a few minutes. They are served with a cilantro aioli that adds just a nice dip to the fries. One thing that stood out -- unlike many Cuban places that rely so heavily on garlic, Cafe con Leche didn't over-garlic their dishes. There was definitely garlic, don't get me wrong. This place was delicious. I was a bit confused when I initially walked by, it was an open bar/restaurant that had a venue in the back. The restaurant itself is in the front. We got chicken & beef empanadas and tostones for starters. Entrees: Ropa Vieja and pan con lechon. We finally sync'd up at the right time when in the area and got a chance to try the place. Add fresh homemade limeade, and we couldn't be happier to see them open as a restaurant. Overall, I give this place 3.5 stars (bumping it to 4 stars). The restaurant has some strange hours of operation, with it only being open during the weekdays and even more limited hours on Mon - Wed. It might be due to the SODO location and lack of business need, but it's a shame. After we ordered, the waiter offered to split our orders onto two plates to make it easier to share. We ordered: -Puerco Asado (roasted pork) entree - $10.95 -Pan Con Lechon Cuban sandwich (slow roasted pork with caramelized sweet onions and garlic sauce) - $9.50 The sandwich came with a side of fries. The roasted pork had really good flavor and was tasty. I still prefer the Cuban sandwiches at Paseos, but Con Leche's was pretty darn yummy. We also got an extra side of maduros (because you can never have enough) and Masitas Fritas to start. The Puerco Asado was phenomenal. The flavor was fantastic and paired with their (delicious) moros (black beans and white rice mixture) and maduros (fried sweet plantain), I was in Cuban food Heaven. The steak I got a bite of and it was also a delicious! The maduros were great (a little more cooked than my normal preference, but still so yummy), but the Masitas Fritas were delicious, they just are not my cup of tea because they tend to be fatty. Overall, my first impression of Cafe Con Leche was a great one! I am always happy to stumble upon a new and delicious authentic Cuban restaurant! It reminds me of being back in Miami! I have eaten here twice. Both times were outstanding. I had the skirt steak the first time. It was very flavorful but the highlight was the Maduros (fried sweet plaintains) and the moros rice and beans). Incredible. The second time I got Empanadas (1 beef and 1chicken). They serve it with a small cup of green sauce. Good stuff. Then I had the Cuban stew. Fantastic. This time I topped it off with flan. Also really good. I went to lunch today at cafe con leche with some friends from work that had been their before. I ordered the puerco asado and my friends ordered the bistec de palomilla. It was all delicious and well prepared. It is an overlooked lunch cafe in the sodo district of Seattle close to the old sears and Home Depot, Next to a rock climbing club. My meal was the pork and rice that all had great taste and my friends was the steak that was cooked to perfection just like they wanted it. The Staff was friendly and did a great job also. Great local non chain place to try especially with many places going out of business because of Covid restrictions. I will be back to try different plate. read more

I thought maybe I had my Paseo goggles on when I went in the first time -- making waking up the next morning in the proverbial bed after my Cafe Con Leche 'encounter' a little disappointing. And awkward. I was joined this second go-'round by the lovely Clover A. The last time I came here, I had the Cuban chicken sandwich with fries. I hear that the bread is baked here but I really could not differentiate it between homemade and something from the store. But maybe there's a subtle taste difference that I can't pick up on? The chicken however, was unavoidably flavorless. The fries were good (and they give you a side of uber-garlicky green dip for them too) but the sandwich...we stared at each other in my office for the longest time. I wasn't sure if I should continue eating after the first half or not. I could tell the sandwich was nervous either way. Sitting in during lunch hour, it was really busy when I arrived, then suddenly, the once-full tables were all cleaned and wiped...and we proceeded to not get service. Maybe they were resting after the rush, but I was a bit bummed out as we both had to get back to work (luckily, the food is fast.) Yucca fries. Get 'em. For empanada feedback, you'll have to check with my lunchmate, as I didn't try them. Tried Cafe con Leche this week because my sister is on the elusive search for authentic Cuban food. Normally I would not consider stumbling upon a place like this so I was reluctant to eat there. The restaurant is located in the heart of SODO, nearby is a Bank of America, Club Sur and a tire store. A strange location, but has potential with such large venues and corporate Starbucks nearby. As we enter, the ambiance of the place isn't too terrible. Despite being completely empty, it has a pleasant airy feel about it and a cute little lounge area near the bar. Ordering at the bar with only two menus available is a huge no no, especially when the establishment is set up for nice seated dining. Office depot or Kinko's can offer copies for mere cents. First of all, they are out of beans at 3 pm in the afternoon on a Saturday. WTF! With that knowledge, I decided to try a sandwich instead of a plate (half the menu comes with rice and beans). The sandwich was tasty for the most part but not out of this world, especially for 9 bucks. Presentation was like a poor man's lunch in a basket and our $3 juices were about 5 and a half ounces. Next time I'll have to remember to bring a Trader Joes jug of mango nectar so I'm not completely parched... All in all, this place has potential for what I have heard from the owner's rep, but as of now it is confused with what kind of dining and crowd it is targeting. Utensils and napkins at the little table in the corner is weird and in my opinion, if the place is completely dead, customer service the shit out of the people who come in. I grew up in Tampa and have been looking for a proper Cuban sandwich (with actual cuban bread) for a few years now. I'll give the cuban a 4.5 stars but the quality of service was so poor that it really took away from the experience. First, even though there was only one other party dining, I had to go to the bar after 5 minutes of sitting down just to ask again for the water I ordered when I was seated. I had to flag down my server for my next two refills, and was never even offered a refill. This simple fact reflects an abysmal level of attention to customer care. Also I asked if I could have yellow rice w black beans instead of the white rice w black beans item. He said yes of course but instead i was brought an order of yellow rice and a separate order of black bean soup and was charged for both.
