With a vegan husband the search for places to eat to please a group have been tricky, so we were thrilled to find this gem in Newtown. I ordered off the specials menu and had seared tuna that was bold (zingy) and perfectly done. My hubby orders the Seiten and he says it was really good...great marinade, pleasant texture (not dry!) We had two vegan desserts, a chocolate cake that everyone said "that's Vegan?!" And a berry cobbler that was ok - good but nothing special. We will definitely be going back. read more

Has been a favorite of mine for many years but recently the chef/owner added an amazing vegan menu. I had ordered the turkey curry soup because I enjoyed it in the past and was thinking how wonderful it was this time (even better then before) and found out it was vegan! This used to be our favorite little spot in Newtown. We went last week around 5:30 and were the only folks in the place. We ordered the quesadillas. Not only were they filled with mashed potatoes?!? but they were burnt! We definitely liked how they put the burnt side down hoping we wouldn't notice! My husband ordered their pasta with seafood. The menu clearly stated that it had cheese on top. He told the waitress, who didn't write down our order, no cheese. Needless to say it was covered with cheese and he sent it back. This place is hard to find (it's basically in a basement), so if you don't know what you're looking for it might take a while to find it. That said, the food is awesome. Everything is always fresh and the menu is always changing. However, they are extremely SLOW. The last few times I went to lunch and it took over 2 hours. I frequently come here for lunch, and have always found their food delicious. Their lunch menu is very affordable. On average every meal is between 9-11 dollars. I have heard their coffee and dessert is very good, but I have never had it. I highly recommend their capri sandwich ( it comes with a fresh side of the day), the penne with chicken and broccoli( they cook it with fresh reggiano cheese, and also recommended is the salad with cranberries and balsamic. read more

Mmmmmm! Cafe Con Leche. Good times. The place is just great, especially since it's practically impossible to find and the dining room is nice and small. Forget Isaac Newton's, come here for better food and service, all without the pretentious attitude. I've been here maybe four times, and I can recommend with hesitation the fajita or the soups. The soups are supreme and I look forward to trying the new kind they offer. I've yet to be disappointed by Cafe Con Leche's soups, and I bet you won't be either. Had my worst lunch experience at this place. Went with my pregnant wife and year old because according to Yelp it's a kids friendly. They don't have a kids menu, so I had to order a full meal for my two year old. My wife and I ordered ginger ales, but that was available because they are changing out the sodas(during lunch hour on a Saturday). For lunch we ordered chicken sandwiches. The chicken was over cooked as a result the sandwiches were dry. After the meal I ordered a cup a coffee. I was told it will take 5-10 minutes. This a cafe, coffee should take so long. On top of all this, we could change our two year old diaper because the restroom don't have a change table. I kids friendly place always have a kids menu and a changing table. Please update your yelp to "not kids friendly" because you will continue to have these types of reviews. read more

i've lived in newtown my whole life and have always been a fan of cafe con leche. as someone who has some dietary restrictions due to vegetarianism or veganism, i've never had any issue finding something i'd like to eat on their menu. my girlfriend and i went a couple months ago and ordered food to-go. the service was quick and as usual all the employees are friendly, welcoming and helpful. The atmosphere of this little restaurant is cozy and nostalgic, and it's in a great part of town with accessible parking. I can't believe it took me so long to hear about this restaurant. We have eaten at most of the restaurants in the area and were still looking for our "go to" spot. Cafe Con Leche is it! It is in the basement of a building in downtown Newtown and you park back by Isaac Newtowns. Don't let the term basement fool you, you will want to take people here for dinner. The blackbean soup we had to start was amazing, a cross between traditional blackbean soup and vegetable soup. The starter salads actually had vegeatables other than just lettuce, which is what I am used to getting at restaurant these days. I had the lobster ravioli which was really good and the other 3 people at our table gave 5 stars to their meals as well. Service was speedy but not intrusive. It is BYOB so make sure to bring yoru favorite bottle of wine. We can't wait to go back to try other things on the menu! read more

Ate here last Saturday, the place is kind of dingy, not in the cool way. The staff is friendly but the service is a tad slow for the number of tables. I suspect it's the small kitchen. The food was good but not for the price. I had the seafood medley with curry rice. I could have gotten the same thing at an Indian Restaurant for half the price. It's BYOB so beverage choices are limited. My dinner partner had the lobster ravioli. It was good but again not worth the price tag. I've had lunch here several times, i'll be eating here for a long time. So far, everything i've had has been awesome! The chimi and cajun tilapia sandwiches are my absolute favorites. The caesar and blue cheese w/pear salads are really good too. I haven't had a chance to try their desserts or drinks but i've heard that they are really good from others. Other reviewers have mentioned poor service but i've had the opposite, always greeted with a smile, quick service, no issues with special requests. Definitely worth a shot! Hadn't been to Cafe Con Leche for a few years. I remember they had a good lunch menu and saw an Amazon coupon, so I went with 3 other people. Showed the coupon and was told it wasn't good at lunch, even though that is no where on the voucher. Should have just left, but ate their anyway. The paninis were mediocre at best and the service was slow. Called Amazon and they refunded my voucher. Thank goodness since I'll never go back there again. read more

I have tried this place a few times and have never been too impressed. I have ordered the black bean burger and it was just okay. They fill up 75 percent of the plate with salad to make it seem like you are getting more food. One time my friend and I dined there, she ordered fish and she said she didn't want to eat it because it was extremely greasy. I ordered a pasta dish for almost 20 dollars and it was very basic. Great food, horribly slow service! If you have extreme amounts of patience and no where to be for an hour or two, the excellent food might be worth the wait. Otherwise, dont waste your time. All I have to say is that their fajitas are the best deal on the menu ($10-12) and probably the best I've eaten in a long time --- and I really like fajitas. When the plate comes out --- it looks somewhat disappointing. 2 pre-wrapped fajitas. But upon taking a bite, I was so overwhelmed with yummy goodness that I savored every bite. The chicken was seasoned well and the veggies cooked to perfection --- and there was probably like 2 chicken breasts stuffed in there so my belly was quickly filled. Also, try their salad with the house dressing. Bowl cleaning good with a unique, slightly garlicky flavor. The staff is very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. I held back the 5th star because the dinner menu is a bit pricey for my taste. I would love to see them have a menu packed with $10-25 entrees but, they are more in the $20-$30 range. The portions are more than ample so I guess that makes it OK. Maybe I'll just stick to lunch for more budget friendly fare and well, who am I kidding? I'll just gladly eat more fajitas! read more

I love Cafe Con Leche! I've been in a number of times and each time the service has been wonderful and the food was delicious. I am vegan, so when I heard about their vegan menu option I was thrilled. Try the vegan crab cakes- they're outstanding, and very reasonably priced. On a sandwich they're about $9, including a side salad. The dinner entree is $18, which I think is still reasonable, and it comes with rice and veggies. I can never finish the whole plate, which means I always have yummy leftovers for lunch the next day. Their soups are good too, incredibly fresh and perfect during this long winter. The Energy soup with quinoa and sweet potato really blew me away. In fact, I was buying it by the quart to have at home, and went in once to pick it up only to have the owner offer me samples of every other vegan soup they had, including a chili with beans and seitan. She was so friendly and welcoming, and so enthusiastic about their food, talking to me about the preparation of the different dishes. It was obvious she cared a lot about her restaurant and the food they served. For dessert, try the oreo brownie cake with a mug of black coffee. It's the best, but definitely share-able because it's so rich. They'll even add a dollop of their homemade whipped coconut cream. Heaven! Finally, BYOB. Enough said. I'm not sure why this place has received poor reviews for the service- I live right in town and frequent Cafe Con Leche often, and I've never had anything less than stellar experiences, from the food to the service- it's always great. The waitresses are friendly and attentive, the managers are always really accommodating, and the owner is really welcoming. I've never waited long for my food, and I've never been disappointed by what I had ordered. To my knowledge no one I've come with has, either. Came here because it had such good reviews...I was so excited to try the place but was a little let down. The place is BYOB which is a big plus. The menu is small but I sometimes appreciate small menus because it let's me know that they focus on perfecting food....but I don't think this place did that. The food wasn't bad but it also wasn't amazing. Pasta was a little overcooked. I ordered the mussels with linguine...originally...but they didn't have mussels so they gave me shrimp instead. The shrimp was so small....bite size even. The sauce was just okay. Nothing special....tasted like melted butter with garlic. The garlic bread was great. Probably my favorite part. My friend and I split the chocolate cake which was just okay. The cake was extremely dry but it had these phyllo layers which was cool. I also think people mainly get takeout from this place. If you do sit in ask to sit by the window. The downstairs is kinda dark. read more
