Went to Cafe Beignet this past Thursday morning for the first time and was extremely underwhelmed. They seemed befuddled by my request to get a cup of coffee to go. Um, aren't you sort of a COFFEE SHOP? They had no half and half despite being a couple of doors down from a large grocery store. The decor was hodgepodge with a sparse selection of cherry wood tables and chairs and random beach themed "art" on the walls. Definitely no "New Orleans" atmosphere. It was largely empty except for a couple of people standing around. The waitress gal informed me that they would be charging a 3% surcharge for using a credit card which I'm pretty sure violates Visa's Terms of Service for Merchants. Ugh. read more

The beignets were great, however, the lady up front was a grouch. Not only this, but she was inconsistent across customers, she told some people it was cash only (there was no sign) and let others use cards. At one point, the cook also yelled up to the front asking about tips while customers were ordering. The people here did not seem upstanding at all. read more

The beignets were pretty good, and actually were even still decent when we ate the leftovers the next day. Usually beignets are terrible the next day. I am REALLY picky when it comes to beignets, so it's rare I'll rate a beignets as excellent, unless they are actually SUBLIME. I'd say these were about an 7.5/10. But the average person who is not obsessed with beignets would probably love them! There was some kind of sewage smell inside which I'm sure can't be helped, but it was off putting. We have been getting beignets here for over 20 years.... family tradition.... many times walking down to eat and enjoy! We were just here last August and from then til now something changed for the better!! While we got carry out these last two times the feel from the moment you walked in it felt fresh, clean and like there was care and intention!! The only thing that MAY be different is we used to walk out with a brown oil-stained, lunch-size brown bag filled with puffs and powdered sugar. Yesterday my beignets were in a nice white box. The staff is polite and efficient but don't expect a lot of flowery conversation. The beignets are very good (Tip#1: if you haven't had a beignet, DO. Tip#2: consume ASAP. Tip#3 don't wear black). I was not particularly impressed. I'm not typically a critic of interior decorating, but this place looks like a vacant space was moved into without any tidying. I was looking forward to trying the Chicory coffee. My kids also wanted to order some milk. I was told we could not order those things and that we should come back tomorrow. OK.... I can only assume they were out of milk. Funny thing is there is a grocery store right next store. The beignets...they were OK. I guess I was so let down by the rest of the experience that the main event did not even seem worth it. They are much better than Cafe Du Monde IMO. Please note their sign says open "till noonish" which means don't show up at 11:55 thinking you will get served as some people complain about. We've been eating here since 1996. We used to eat at the original one in Gulf Shores then when they opened this location in Orange Beach we became regulars here. We have literally never had a trip down here where we didn't make time for at least one breakfast here. This place is great. It's not fancy. It's not really trendy. There aren't bells and whistles here. But it's a cute, casual, DELICIOUS Beignet beach spot and what more can you want? And while I'm from Colorado / Utah (not really known for great French / Cajun food) I've had Beignets all over - including the famous Cafe Du Monde in NOLA - and I honestly think these are better!!! I recommend sticking to the classics - avoid the filled or anything too fancy - and you'll be very pleased! Highly recommend Will return for 20 more years PS don't wear black or you'll leave showing all the powdered sugar you ate! read more

As a local, thought we'd give it a go and try to support local. I hate to leave reviews like this but the experience was terrible. Coffee came in a dIrty cup, atmosphere is tired and run down, service was 'meh', beignets weren't great; a little to greasy. A guy came in while we were there and helped himself to coffee all while coughing all over it. That was all I could handle. We are headed elsewhere. read more
