This place has recently become a favorite of a coworker of mine due to their large portions, friendly service and proximity to work. I had the opportunity to grab lunch again and instead getting my typical rice dish I opted to get Bun, a cold vermicelli salad bowl. This one was topped with grilled pork, shrimp, and two egg rolls and served with a side of dressing. Everything was cooked well and season nicely. Since everything is made to order, it takes a little while to get your food but it did not seem excessively long either. Their menu may be more limited than other local Vietnamese restaurants but that will not prevent me from returning. read more

Can't say enough about this place, the food, the people, it's a whole thing. It's a smallish family run place attached to a pool hall in a oddly located strip mall. If you know you know and if you don't...you won't be disappointed. Big bowls of delicious pho, a pot of hot jasmine tea and some spring rolls make the perfect meal on a cold day. It's off the beaten path on a non descriptive side street lined w gray brick warehouse. It adjacent to some sort of pool hall as well. The interior reminded me of how a few bad horror movies start. The lady running the outfit also appeared to have a stoic demeanor. Wasn't boding well. We bravely powered thru all the visual noise and ordered. 2 shrimp pork rolls, 2 fried pork rolls, 1 1 roast pork bahn mi & 1 vermicelli w pork and vegetables. Home run! I'm visiting from out of town and unexpectedly found great pho. It's located off the beaten path. A few parking spaces out front. Nothing fancy and unassuming. I got the pho and cafe Sua da. I got my food quickly. The pho was very good. I'm from northern VA where pho restaurants are a dime a dozen and I believe this place could give pho at Eden Center or anywhere in NOVA a run for its money. The best Asian food restaurants are the ones that fly under the radar and are not so dressed up like this place. This place might not look all that spectacular from the inside and is not completely visible to see from the outside, but the food is slammin. You get a decent portion of pho and vermicelli when you order. The spring rolls came with a delicious peanut sauce that wasn't too spicy. I love this place. The only thing I would say is be patient and be kind as there are like 2 people working here doing everything (I believe it's a couple and they are the owners). They were cooking and delivering the food. When I was there, it wasn't busy but there were two other families that sat down. It wasn't loud. The lighting could be better if I could make a suggestion for change as it would add to the ambience to the place rather than it making it feel like I'm eating in the lobby of an insurance office. I was visiting from Seattle and was lucky enough to discover this place. Hands down the best pho I've ever tasted. I came to eat here almost everyday when I was in Lancaster. The broth is nothing compared to other pho restaurants. The broth is so deep and full of flavor you can tell they used a lot of bones and spent time on it, the meat is fresh and tender. I also had the bun Bo hue which you should totally try if you can handle your spice. And definitely get a cup of coffee! I tried everything but the sea salt was my favorite! It's such a fun coffee to drink. The place can be a bit noisy at times because it's connected to another business but who cares when the food tastes this good. I had a chat with the new owners and they are super sweet. This place is under new management as of a few months ago and they are putting the bar very high for pho/Vietnamese food in the area. Now I'm sad cause I can't find a pho restaurant as good as this back in Seattle. read more

I would give this place negative stars if that were an option. I went there about a week ago and needless to say, the health department needs to come quick. I was in desperate need of some pho and I found this spot on yelp. Looked like a hidden gem. I decided to try it. The neighborhood is a little sketchy but that didn't phase me. We were greeted by an elderly gentleman that didn't speak English. I was like "this place is legit". After we ordered, that same elderly gentleman stuck his entire right hand in a crusty fish tank. Not sure if he was feeding or playing with them, but his hand was in the fish tank. My friend and I said...ok, we are going to have some problems if he touches our food. Hopeful, I said "no, he's just here hanging out". That was me being ignorant because he went directly back to the kitchen. I had a front row seat and I said..."there's no way he is going to touch our food". Well, he started making coffee, I asked my friend if his coffee had cream. He said "YEA". I clinched my teeth and told him I think he is making our drinks without washing his hands. Next thing we know, that same elderly man who stuck his entire hand in a crusty fish tank without washing his hands had three drinks in his hands. Heading straight for our table. I was excited to try this place our and arrived over 1.5hrs before the closing time which is posted on both Yelp and their physical storefront. The front door was unlocked and we entered, but a lady inside informed us they had closed for the evening. What a disappointment. I have seen other reviews reporting this establishment not abiding by their own posted hours so this may be a recurring issue for this restaurant. I won't waste my time here again. So I decided to try Rice and noodles again because so many people seem to love it. We didn't. We disliked it so much we had to RUN to cafe Pho and Hoang. The lovely owner recognized us immediately and greeted us warmly. One bowl of Everything pho, a classic bahn mi and 2 iced Vietnamese coffee and all is right again in the world. The broth at Cafe Pho and Hoang is the bomb. You can taste the charred ginger and star anise essential to authentic Pho broth. It is a little sweeter as the owner is from Saigon. The bahn mi is perfect. Crispy crust on soft fresh baguette, ham, pate and veggies in perfect proportion. Too many times you get bahn mi over stuffed in the US and the bahn mi becomes more about the meat than the balance of meat,bread and veggies. Seems very popular among the local Vietnamese so I'll stick to eating here. read more

Super strange location in what looks like an industrial back-alley. I came in broad daylight and already felt awkward, I can't imagine how patrons must feel when it's dark here. It wasn't "ghetto" or unsafe feeling, just very very seedy-looking. Restaurant as many reviewers noted, has ZERO ambiance. No music, thin stained gray office-like carpet, harsh fluorescent lighting, mismatched dining furniture. In fact when we walked in we heard old Vietnamese men very loudly shouting while playing billiards in a room next door, in what appears to be an unofficial community gathering place attached to the restaurant. *Pho: I ordered the "dac biet" with all the ingredients in it. The flavor was watery, somewhat sweet, quite pleasant, with definitely less meaty beefy flavor than competitors in Central PA. For $9, the value was just "okay". *Com Tam (broken rice): You'll get some pan-fried (not grilled) pork, small amount of steamed egg meatloaf, a few veggies, with your rice. The pork flavor falls short of competitors in the area. The fish sauce has zero spice. Sure, the price point looks low at $8, but I will say that it still seems like a small portion, and that you'll get better quantity for your buck at any Chinese take-out. Cafe & Pho Hoang is not a terrible restaurant. It's just not delicious enough to get away with looking this seedy. It is not worth a trek if you're not local. If you want good Vietnamese, I'm sticking to my good old Harrisburg, and you should too. You'll thank me later if you haven't tried. read more

However upon opening the door to enter the restaurant we were hit in the face by the smell of what it seems like a year old wet ashtray. I was there today, Thu Sep 26, at 7:45. New hours say place is open till 8:00 pm but they closed it already around 7:40 or earlier. I came quite a way by foot only to find myself locked out. How far would you drive for a good bowl of pho? Well, I live in Maryland and just decided one Sunday to take a day trip to Lancaster, PA. I knew I was going to get there just around lunch time so I researched ahead online to see the top pho restaurants there. All bets looked like it was going to be N****e K**g. So I get into Lancaster and head straight for N****e K**g. And wouldn't you know it? It's closed on Sundays! Talk about being pissed (and hungry). So I get on my mobile phone to look up pho restaurants nearby. Lo and behold Café &Pho Hoang came up. Plus it was within walking distance. This place is on a sidestreet; one of those hole-in-the-wall joints you always here of. But taking my past experience with off-the-beaten path ethnic eateries, I knew I had probably run into a winner. I walked in and it was definitely no frills. plastic table cloths; mixture of fake and real potted plants, and no waitress waiting to seat you. I loved it instantly. I found my way to a table. After looking over the menu, which was quite extensive for such a small place (a good sign indeed), a man came from the back room (which has several pool tables by the way), and took my order. I decided to order my pho from the pictures in the menu. I like spicy, so I ordered the spicy beef pho because the broth had the reddest color. I was really in for a treat. The rich, savory broth was aromatic, rich, and flavorful. I didn't even have to add any spiracha. It was plenty hot just from the red pepper and fire from the oven. The kind of spice that makes your nose start running. I wolfed that bowl down and asked for another--something I rarely, if ever do in a pho restaurant. But this was definitely worth the exception. I highly recommend this place--hands down one of the best pho restaurants I have been to in recent memory. The menu is extensive, the food is flavorful and "authenic". Don't expect however carte blanche waitress service, fancy décor, or background music. And my sense is this place doesn't attract many family diners, but more solo, couples, and students make up the clientele. I say students because of the restaurants close proximity to the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. To get to the bathroom, you have to walk through the pool hall. This eatery is definitely no frills. But you come here for the food, not the furnishings or ambience. And if you play pool, you can even work your meal off with a few beers and a game of 8 ball in the back room. I give it 4 out of 5 stars! read more

This place is a bit off the beaten path, not seen from the main roads, but apparently, such a hidden treasure truly is worth finding. When we walked in several weeks ago, it did take the girl a few seconds to look up to see us, but once she did, she was courteous & waited on us fine throughout our visit. As others have said, don't let the plainly-appointed place nor some noise from the pool hall in the adjacent room turn you off. You are there to eat good food, & good food is what you'll get! Perhaps it is the influence of the pool hall, but the hot tea was served in a triple-shot glass, which could burn you if you hold it right after you pour the tea into the shot glass. Once we ordered, the accompanying condiments came out -- the nuoc mam (fish sauce) was unflavored & plain, so much so that in a glance, you couldn't tell the difference between it and the tea. However, it was probably purposefully unflavored so that you can mix in the various oils, hot peppers/Sriracha, etc., to suit your own taste buds. All of the food was *generously* portioned! We started w/ the banh cuon (Vietnamese crepe), which was delicious & lifted our moods straight away (we later even ordered another portion to take home!). On this evening, none of us ordered the pho, but the rice dishes & the wonton noodle soup were tasty, filling, not too salty, & just what we had hoped for when we decided to try this place! It certainly has our vote for the tastiest, most authentic Vietnamese restaurant in the Lancaster area! Compliments to the chef! Came here based on the reviews on Yelp and was not disappointed :-). Though I was a little hesitant because ive never been to this little restaurant before. Anyway, enough about my talk, let's review the foods. They were surprisingly good and the service was decent. There were only 2-3 people in the kitchen and i could hear them talking from my table but was all good. You can ask for a side soup for your rice platter if you order one. The rice was very moist and fresh, the grilled pork was to the point, savory and also tender, the meatloaf and shredded pork were a little dry but did go along with the rest of everything else (this is why we always ordered a side soup for any rice platters). My most favorite was the coffee because it was bitter enough so when it is mixed with condensed milk it just turned out to be the best combination. A little sweet here and a little bitter there. Yeah, perfecto! Fried crispy noodle is stir-fried with veggies and of course big a$$ shrimps (excuse my language). The thick sauce was pretty sunk in the bottom so make sure you really mix your fried noodles well. After all, happy eating :-) read more

This family-owned restaurant may be new (as of January 2016), but it hits home with very good Vietnamese cooking. Located in a nondescript part of Lancaster, the location doesn't look like a place one would open up a restaurant, but there is a sign to indicate its presence. I had the Pho Dac Biet, a rice noodle soup with eye round beef, flank, tendon, and tripe. This bowl is priced fairly for its size, containing good amounts of all the meats. Everything was cooked perfectly, and it came out piping-hot. I thought the broth was notable, having a very rich flavor that I did not see at other local establishments. This place was TASTY! The portions were huge. The food was authentic (I lived in ho chi minh for 3 months, and this had a lot of the classics). In fact, they didn't have a banh mi chay (vegetarian sandwich sometimes made with egg instead of meat), but the cook happily whipped one up just like the ones I used to get daily from a little street stand. We were more than delighted with the food. Now....bear with me guys. Okay, so the ambience is a little, um, how should we say...non-american. 1st time visit, ordered Bun (Rice Vermicelli dish). This dish is always accompanied by a small bowl of Nuoc Cham (a seasoned fish sauce). Immediately, this sweet little bowl started crying, "I want my Umami!" The Unami it was seeking was obviously the insufficient amount of nuoc mam (Asian fish sauce) in the recipe. The recipe was way off balance, even lacking in citrus, garlic and chili peppers. Thinly shredded threads of carrots could have contributed a bit of Umami to the sauce, which was not much more than sugar water with a dash of nuoc mam. As for the bowl of Bun, it was very basic, absent of a more common array of fresh green elements. The most noticeable missing ingredient was crushed roasted peanuts that helps pull the dish together. By making these recipes more authentic would be an easy way to market the establishment as a Vietnamese cuisine eatery instead of a simulated variant. This establishment should also consider adapting something from Japan... a high standard of hygienic practices spanning from table presentation to restrooms, and likely in food handling practices. After all, Restaurants are not judged solely on food alone. The restrooms are a marker of level of comfort and quality in an establishment. Details are important! read more

Good little dive with great Pho. The lady who runs the place is always very kind. She knows who I am by now I stop in so often, she also knows what I typically order and asks to be sure that's what I want. Flavorful Pho, and great Vietnamese coffee. I also don't have to worry about bringing my toddler to dine in because it's a casual atmosphere and he loves the fish tank. I've never had a bad experience and I've also never seen men working there. So it's odd that the negative review is about a man. Typically the men are around but usually dining or hanging out because they are playing pool next door. I've only ever seen Vietnamese women cooking and waiting tables, namely the older lady who runs the place. Oddly, the guy who wrote that bad review wrote it a year ago. Wow! As much as I love Saigon cafe, this place is even better. Deco and location are not the best, but the food is of a different level. Been here three times in less than a week, still impressed and amazed. Had pho, spring rolls, all three of the bahn mi's, and a crispy noodle dish. Everything was fantastic. Worth the try! read more
