The food all in all is pretty good, the parking suckssss and I mean it absolutely sucks it's either a garage or pay to park across the street. The atmosphere in here is awkwardly quiet like there's no music or nothing playing you can just hear the stillness now the tortillas are absolutely amazing the beans and cheese yummy country sausage and egg supper good along with the chorizo and egg now the carne guisada with cheese with so in the middle I have no words just not good but not bad . We are staying in the high-rise apartments next door to this place while our house is being renovated. Since it is literally across the street, we see it everyday. When we looked on Yelp, the 3.5 stars made us hesitant, but we decided to give it a try and we were VERY glad that we did! The restaurant itself has been in business for 12 years and a restaurant has been in the spot for 50. The restaurant is completely family owned, managed and operated. The principal owner, Rafael, came out to visit with us. They had a choice of whether to have a large kitchen and smaller dining area or visa versa and they chose a smaller kitchen, so everything is hand-made including the tortillas. I ordered bacon, egg and cheese breakfast tacos and my wife ordered potato, egg and cheese breakfast tacos. I also ordered a side of refried beans and salsa -- for me, those two items (and the tortillas) are indicators of a really good Mexican restaurant or not. The refried beans were excellent, flavorful and definitely homemade. The salsa was a green salsa, which for me is usually not a good thing, but I decided to give it a try - it was REALLY good - flavorful with a bit of 'heat'. I could count on one hand the number of times I've liked a green sauce, so that tells you something. The tacos were nice sized. The tortillas were clearly homemade - fluffy, warm and perfectly browned. The bacon was chopped up and mixed in with the eggs - very tasty and even more so with . . . the green salsa! The tacos without cheese are $1.99 which is very reasonable, particularly given the size and the flavor. The restaurant is open from 6am - 2pm M-F; 7am - 1pm Sa; and closed Sunday. If you are looking for very tasty Tex-Mex food at an affordable price - this is the place to go. I have no doubt we will be back many times! read more

Came here for lunch and the service was excellent! It seemed like a lot of regulars come here for lunch, as seating quickly filled up by noon. Food comes out quickly, so you'll be able to maximize your lunch break time. I got the Large Carne Guisada Burrito, which was yummy but a bit salty for my personal tastes. The lunch entree also came with a choice of flour or corn tortillas. The portion was very filling and the food so hearty. I would rate the food 3-stars and the service 4-stars. If you're looking for a good Tex-Mex style cafe downtown, this is your spot. To me, Tex-Mex is defined by the refried beans. There is a distinctive difference between Tex-Mex and the Jalisco / Northern Mexican style fair that has overtaken much of the South Texas market. You'll know a good Tex-Mex refried bean by the bacon-dripping base. Pinto beans refried in bacon drippings have a unique flavor that defines the dish. Today I enjoyed the refried bean and American cheddar breakfast tacos (American cheddar is also a hallmark of good Tex-Mex). I ordered the tortillas on my taco, "Charlie Browned" (lightly toasted), my favorite way to eat breakfast tacos. My wife had the pork chop plate. The pork chop was cooked perfectly, seasoned, tender and juicy on the inside, and crispy on the outside. Country potatoes, refried beans, and freshly cooked flour tortillas rounded off her meal. The Mexican decor is typical of a South Texas cafe. This is definitely a locals spot, quiet with a steady flow of labor, city employees, and employees from nearby offices. Café Alameda is a bit larger than your typical Mom and Pop type Mexican restaurant and a notch nicer than your standard hole-in-the-wall. It's a few blocks off the Riverwalk and it's not trendy, so it doesn't attract any tourists. English is a second language to most of the staff, but they converse easily with all the customers and they make you feel at home no matter who you are. This is definitely not a restaurant that you'll want to take out-of-town relatives and it's not on anyone's must-see list. However, if you work downtown, or you find yourself visiting one of the hospitals across the street, this somewhat plain-Jane establishment offers solid and tasty Mexican food that holds it's own against more well-known competitors nearby at a fraction of the price. The San Antonio staple cheese enchiladas are indistinguishable from any other Mexican restaurant in town. The hard tacos are crispy and light, usually offered in an aluminum foil protective sheet that keeps them from getting soggy in the beans or enchilada sauce. The flour tortillas are good, but the corn tortillas are ooh-la-la (is that a French expression? I think it still applies to Mexican food) soo soooo good - probably my favorite corn tortillas anywhere, on the slightly thick side, very soft and flavorful. Dipping the corn tortillas in my salsa is the favorite part of my meal. Chips and standard red tomato salsa are served with each meal. You usually have to request the verde sauce in the squeeze bottle, but I highly recommend it, it tastes good on everything. Just beware, the verde sauce is not something most Yankees will appreciate. Next time you're downtown and you'd like to avoid both the crowds and the expense of the tourist areas, don't be afraid to check out Café Alameda. read more

Unfortunately I can confirm this restaurant's price-shifting practices. I ordered the picadillo plate, based on another review, and quite enjoyed it. It was served with two tortillas and a surprisingly wonderful green salsa, probably tomatillo based, that had a great bite and added significant flavor to every forkful of deliciousness. The menu price was, I believe, $6.99, but when I took my non-itemized ticket to the cashier she rang up $9.99 plus tax. How she came up with that number, I have no idea. Was I charged some amount for the water I ordered? Were the tortillas extra? Or the green salsa? Was it some un-disclosed out-of-towner tax? I'll never know. I was just passing through and will probably never be back, so I didn't ask and just paid the extra couple bucks, but this is very bad practice in my opinion, and definitely tarnished the experience. As with any restaurant meal: 1) the menu prices should be clear and actual, even if white-out and hand-writing are required to make updates; 2) any extra-cost items should be explained at the time you order; and 3) the final bill should be clearly itemized, whether hand-written and informal or computerized and machine printed. I'd have been willing to pay more than the menu price, but am not at all happy at feeling cheated. I'd rate this restaurant four stars based on the food alone, but two stars seems appropriate, maybe even generous, given their deceptive pricing practices. read more

I love having this place next door. The food is just like mommas cooking and they're a family owned establishment that felt the need to comment about. Everything in the area is being hard hit due to covid and the economy. It's restaurants like this that make living in downtown worth it however even the CVS down the street has closed down for the same reasons which makes me sad as a neighbor. The food is decent but the prices are outrageous. The prices on the menu you see on here are old, everything has gone up 1-2 dollars. I ordered the gorditas b/c it's what I was craving and of course paid extra for cheese and a to go container (which is normally a no biggie) but when I ordered the beef she said asada? And I said you don't have beef? only to find out by the cashier they do have beef (pica dillo) when paying for my $12.50 lunch. Needless to say my craving was only partially satisfied. The rice and beans were okay, the asada was dry and the extra cheese I paid for was not extra. The sign says Now Open so I'm not sure if this place recently opened back up but I don't see them staying open for very much longer. Bad location and prices are too high for what you get. read more

WOW! This place was amazing! Having visited San Antonio many times before we have our "go to" places. Due to the pandemic one of our go to's was closed and we stumbled upon Cafe Alameda. By far the best meal we have had in this city. Somewhat off the beaten path, there is a pay to park lot directly across the street and it was only $2.00 while we enjoyed the best breakfast any of us can remember. Trust me- you need to make this a go to spot. You can tell that the pandemic has put some pressure on this business but we were treated like family, felt like Abuela was making our breakfast. I ate at Cafe Alameda yesterday (1/6/17) for lunch and was not disappointed. I ordered the Arizona Plate that came with steak asada, a cheese enchilada, a puffy taco, rice and beans, guacamole and sour cream. Everything was tasty - especially the puffy taco. It was light and not greasy. The waitstaff were friendly and competent. They are open from 6am-2pm Monday through Saturday. They do not serve breakfast all day. I plan to go back this morning to try out their breakfast. :) NOTE: A sign near the register indicates they will accept CASH ONLY beginning 1/9/17 (no debit or credit cards accepted). read more
