Nice place. The house cat was a nice touch. We had two somewhat unusual sandwiches... Mine was some fried sausage top with some crispy bits on a slice of bread with mayo/mustard as well as some sauerkraut. Sounds kind of funky, but it was pretty good. BF had a sandwich which was raw beef sausage with pickled onions and some cheese. It was a bit unusual, but it was actually pretty flavorful. Service here was cheerful. read more

We stopped by here for lunch after walking around and having been scared out of our wits at the Amsterdam Dungeon. They have a large outdoor seating area by the canal with umbrellas but it was hot so we decided to sit inside which was nice. Really cool decor with an intricate chandelier on the ceiling. Seemed like a very popular place with tourists and locals. I got the tomato soup which came piping hot, was rich and creamy and just the right mix of sour and savory. Nice complement with the bread too. Could have used another slice of bread to make it more filling. But it was a light lunch. The hubs got the smoked salmon salad which was quite a good portion and came with tomatoes and capers and onions and pickles and bread. We sat there for quite a while after we finished eating and they didn't bother us. We had to kill some time before heading over for the Van Gogh Rembrandt 360 experience. The bathrooms are downstairs and we even saw people walk in to only use them and they let them which was nice. Great place to have some Dutch food while seeing the sights in the city!! read more

Café van Zuylen is in a wonderful location on top of the Singel canal. You cannot beat this outdoor terrace. It's also cozy indoor cafe on the corner. There are umbrellas if it is raining too. It must be one of the largest outdoor terrace space in the centrum. It is also right next to the "skinniest" house in Amsterdam. It's easy to miss since it's so skinny! I didn't rate the food since I haven't eaten. We meet here regularly for coffee and drinks though. read more

Fantastic spot to sit, soak up some sun on a beautiful spring day and have a drink, snack or lunch on a bridge overlooking a canal! Service was prompt and very pleasant. We had sourdough bread and hummus to start (ample and delicious) followed by a club sandwich and mozzarella tomato panino. Can't go wrong with either one. Great find close to our Hotel Die Port Van Cleve. Great atmosphere! Dutch food was great. I enjoyed it so much I went back at the end of the evening. Not great, not horrible, definitely not the best service in Amsterdam. We stopped in here for some drinks and snacks on a long day of exploring the city and waiting for a train. Like a lot of the other reviewers, we didn't get the warmest of welcomes, and frankly it was easy to tell the staff didn't really want us there or anyone else there, but we kept to ourselves, ordered when we wanted to order, and paid and left when we wanted. The beer selection wasn't bad, and if I recall the draft beers weren't as expensive as I was expecting. The croquettes were great, and the order came out super hot, which was good - so if you're really hungry when you sit down, maybe order that plus something that's not fried so you can snack on something while the croquettes all cool off. The best part about the place was the house cat. Even though it was silent and didn't do anything specific to help the customers, it was the best member of the staff. It seems to have a favorite seat that it REALLY likes. At one point, a staff member moved the cat from the chair so a group of customers could use it. When the people left later, the cat immediately went back to its favorite seat and got comfy again. Good for you cat. read more

Son had blt, I got croquets, husband had a sandwich and daughter ordered smoked salmon. We all ate half of our food. It was fine but not worth a return and idk if I'd recommend. Menu had a bit of everything- staff was very sweet and the owner really loves what he does (you can tell because he's constantly smiling and doing something). Excellent beer and wine list too. We came here on a Tuesday at 4.30 pm. Nobody really served us at any point. We sat at a table and waited a while for a waiter and a menu. Nothing. When we finally spotted one (10 minutes later), and asked him for a menu he told us to ask for the one the couple sitting next to us had. After that, another 10 minutes for a waiter to come get our order. Another 10 minutes for it to arrive. We asked her "Can we order food now?" And she replied NO. Just as rude as you can imagine. I honestly can't believe how understaffed, and rude and just zero helpful this place and the waiters are. One recommendation: just don't come here. read more

We really liked the food there! The salmon pasta was great, not to heavy on the sauce and it was seasoned to perfection. The goat cheese salad with pear was amazing . We have been traveling for almost a month throughout Europe , and my boyfriend said it was the best salad he had thus far in our travels . I would say those two dishes were winners for sure ! The atmosphere was cool ... One side is just a pub, with some bar food and spills out into the sidewalk . The other side that we visited was the restaurant . While sitting there waiting for someone to come to your table, you start to think of different ways of getting the wait staff's attention. Back flips?? Megaphone??? Confetti cannons?!?!? If you are successful in finding someone to take your order, then comes the wait for what you actually ordered! Once it comes out, you will be forced to wonder why you ordered a toasti that looks like stale bread slices with a misaligned piece of cheese that is semi-toasted. I was happy with my coffee, and am warmed by the fact that in Amsterdam, coffee seems to always come with a little midget cookie. I'm told that you're supposed to drop it on top of the foam to test the quality. If the cookie sinks, then it stinks. If not, then awesome! Mine.... Kinda sunk. But maybe I dropped it too hard?? After walking the cold and windy shopping streets of Amsterdam today-wanted to get some writing time in and decided to stop in here. It is close to my Mom's house and always a place I go to meet friends, write or simply a quick bite or beverage!!! You should try the apple pie-just make sure you ask for it to be heated otherwise it will be ice cold!!! Also, you must hav the whipped cream-or simply do not order it!!! Lovely bar near the canal. Came across this place whilst looking for somewhere to eat breakfast on Sunday. Staff were really friendly and suggested a place to hire bikes which were cheaper than the tourist ones. At night it's a cozy small pub on the Singel. They've got a nice selection of beers on tap and the bartender is friendly. It's a popular bar one minute then the next it's empty until the next wave of people arrives. They have a very large outdoor seating area. During the day when the sun is out it's very busy. Their menu isn't extensive but they do have some nice things on it. I wouldn't go here specifically to eat though more or less to hang out have a beer or three and then maybe something to eat. Lunch is okay. I've no idea what dinner is like. The service outside isn't so great but my expectations were low so I wasn't all too surprised but grateful when my drink or food finally arrived. read more

A pretty standard brown bar along the canals. We came upon this place barhopping one night to enjoy a few more drinks (genever and beer). Great vibe but we noticed the prices were a bit more expensive than some of the nearby areas of similar category--and I can't exactly figure out why. Service was a bit inattentive which was a bit irritating, but it was easy to have a conversation with the low key, almost divey atmosphere. Here is your manual on getting a great lunch just a few steps away from the horrible Dam Square: choose a weekday with good warm weather, sit under the umbrellas outdoors on top of the Torensluis (looks like a bridge to the uninitiated), choose the tables farthest away form the pathway, order beer and some Dutch fingerfood. Views will be great, disturbances minimal, food much better than you would expect in such a touristy place, service nice and prompt. read more
