It was our last night in Amsterdam and my family and I were looking for some light bites to eat. We also had yet to have apple pie in Amsterdam and that was very important to us and I stumbled across this place so we decided to try it. This was really the only place we ate at in Amsterdam that we felt like was frequented by locals rather than tourists. We dined outside and it was a nice night so that worked out just great. My husband had the calamari and he especially enjoyed the lemon aïoli that came with it. I had the salad and it was excellent. I loved the dressing and the grapes and it just worked. My son had cheese sticks which he thoroughly enjoyed. We finished with the apple pie, which everyone enjoyed and my son said was his favorite thing he ate the whole trip. Great atmosphere ( we sat at a small table near the street; fairly busy but quiet and fun to people watch). Great wait staff and excellent food. If you're from the US you'll be best served to decompress and take your time. We sat there for a couple of hours and enjoyed it; in the States we would have been in and out in a little over an hour. Café Toussaint is a charming little restaurant just steps away from the Grand Hotel Downtown. While walking back from Dam Square, we spotted this cozy little corner café and knew we had to come here for dinner one night. We decided to celebrate our last night here with a cozy dinner and I'm really happy we did. We walked in at around 8:45pm without reservations and there were a couple of tables available. We were seated immediately and given menus in both English and Dutch. Although DuoLingo has given me the basics (kind of), we ended up ordering from the English menu, in true tourist fashion. I think we were the only foreigners dining there that evening, as the bar and tables seemed to be full of locals. That's how you know the food is good! My cousin opted for the ravioli special of the night, and I ordered the prime rib - medium rare. Although cooked a bit rarer then I am used to, the meat was delicious and tender. This is the way meat is supposed to be served, so I'm not even mad about it. My dish came with fried potatoes and a side salad which included picked veggies. Everything was spot on. For dessert, we went with the sticky toffee pudding which is one of my favorites, and hard to find in the US. We DEVOURED this in a few bites. I wish we had ordered an extra! Service was friendly but slow, likely because there was only one person waiting tables, and it seems like the Dutch do enjoy a leisurely dinner. I don't blame them. Loved this spot! Found this little gem by our hotel and it was so good. Excellent service and quality food. Pick a seat. Doesn't matter where you sit because it feels cozy anywhere. Bathrooms are towards the back of the restaurant and is very clean. We ordered lattes and they were delicious. I got the Florentine Benedict and it was amazing!! Definitely recommend. My fiancé ordered the scramble and added ham. It was a huge serving. We enjoyed everything. Enjoy! read more

Quintessential bistro with just the right amount of lunch or dinner options. I had one of the two survivals: pumpkin ravioli with Gorgonzola cream sauce and salad. Next trip I'll be sure to get in on the chocolate creme brûlée. Perhaps 10 tables, outdoor seating as well in a quiet neighborhood near Leidespleiin. Cafe Toussaint was excellent and the service was extremely friendly and efficient. I don't know if it was Dutch food, or not, but I don't care--it was good! I had their open-face meat loaf sandwich and my wife had the tomato soup. We each had an excelllent blond bier. The food bill was under 20 euros! We will be back soon! read more

Off the beaten' path and located on a side street away from the busy main street, this nice, comfortable, quaint cafe is perfect for a small snack or a night-cap of their very yummy apple pie (highly recommend) and a cappuccino. We went here 2x (back-to-back). Service the first evening was great. Service the second day, was a bit slow. I suggest to eat outside to enjoy the sights and sounds (lots of trees and birds!). This restaurant is situated in a beautiful, picturesque neighborhood. (Then again, what neighborhood in Amsterdam ISN'T beautiful and picturesque!) We were seated immediately for lunch. I had the coppa di parma sandwich and tomato basil soup. Both were absolutely divine. The sandwich came open faced. It had a nice salty taste from the ham and artichoke and a perfect crunch from the pine nuts. I loved how they topped it off with watercress. The soup was rich and thick and had great flavors and it had a great balance of acidity and sweetness. I've had my share of tomato soups and this is up there with one of the best I've tried. My lunch was served with a glass of Leffe blonde beer which went so well with the sandwich and soup. Service was decent. I would go back to this place if I make it back to Amsterdam. read more

Eh this place is easy on the eyes but not on the stomach. Wandered in around 11:30 wanted a small little lunch/brunch. Nothing fancy. The interior and exterior is super cute little cafe. I loved the inside, old bar in the middle and to the right was a cute kitchenette with pots and pans hanging. Gives you that old timey feeling. Waitresses were nice and attentive why I'm willing to bump up a solid 2 star cafe to 3. The food is a no go. My mother and myself ordered their version of Paninis. The bread was burnt, not appetizing. Overly hard and stale. I ordered the Italian panini and it was lava scorching hot. The tomato sauce and cheese was painfully hot. Didn't even make sense to serve it this way. I swear I had to sit to let it cool for 10 minutes before even taking another bite. The only drinkable/edible thing I ordered was their cute mint ice tea. Lemon, mint, ice and tea it was refreshing and lovely. It did not prepare me for my nooked sandwich. Sorry to say I won't be back. Food just isn't worth it. But for some tea the service is great and decor very sweet. I just have to be honest with our experience since it wasn't too good. read more

We had an excellent meal here! The soups and antipasti were amazing, and the rest of my family enjoyed their salads or tapas a lot! Special mention to the apple pie, it was really excellent! Quaint cafe on a side street near/in the Jordaan neighborhood. I ordered the salad (only one on menu). Greens with warm goat cheese, pumpkin, pine nuts, and artichoke hearts. The taste was good but there was way too much dressing on the greens. I couldn't finish because it was so oily. My husband got the Quiche with spinach, feta and mushrooms. There was so much spinach and feta that it tasted like a spinach dip. There was definitely not enough egg proportionally. I was alerted to the presence of this small French cafe by my DK Eyewitness guidebook for Amsterdam. Tucked away in the northern section of the museum district, this cafe is far enough removed from the hustle and bustle of the really touristy streets of this section, which makes it feel like a hidden local secret. We walked passed the upscale street with all the Burberry, Hugo Boss, Chanel, etc stores and their associated overpriced bistros and cafes to hunt down this cafe, I can't say enough of how happy we were we decided to! The food was A-mazing, and the prices were probably the most ridiculous part of our lunch. A massive (and delicious) lamb burger was only 8.5 euro, with a Sprite the whole meal fell under 10 euro, something hard to do even at fast food places here in Amsterdam sometimes. Hands down if you're going to see some of the museums in this district, or just going for a walk and want a solid lunch go out of your way to find this. It's also close to a couple tram lines (find a map with them on it). PS. The menu was translated into English for foreigners! read more

Both were delicious and perfect for a typical cold/sunny/rainy all over the place Amsterdam day. While some on here have said, "Oui, Oui." I'm leaning more to, "No, no." It's kind of my own fault though. I went against my cardinal rule which was to order a meal that is not the specialty....lol I ordered the flank steak and the waitress said they recommended it cooked medium rare. (That is code for you are getting it that way no matter how you order it.) Unfortunately for me that is the correct way to cook a steak but just not the way I like them. I asked for mine medium but I knew in my heart it wasn't gonna come out that way. And I was right! The steak was still, "Moo'ing" when they brought it out! Poor Bessy! Now the server did come over and ask if everything was okay but I know better then to send a steak back to the kitchen for a little re-heating. It took a lot of will power not to shove ole Bessy in the young cook's face and scream at him that it wasn't even close to Medium. We had the tomato soup and the pumpkin soup (daily special) and both were fantastic. Fresh, whole ingredients really made the flavors of the soups shine. The prices were also very reasonable. This place has really great ingredients-- all fresh and of good quality-- but the story ends there. They take their fresh ingredients and make something that I can easily make at home. In fact, if the Toussaint people are reading this, please, please do something to downgrade your soups so I can order something else off the menu. I hate coffee, I am absolutely hate coffee but Holland fixed that very quickly. Most of Eu is coffee shops and I now know why. The coffee is strong and it comes in little tea cups. They also gave us little cookies to go with the coffee, Get this, the cookies were free and they kept them coming every time you without one. They were also very good, usually free stuff tastes like card board but these were cinnamon almond biscuits and they were made in Holland. The place also has lots of outdoor seating and they offer blankets if you're sitting outside since it can get chilly. There's also lots of fire heaters around. read more

Great food and a lovely energetic patio/outdoor garden for seating. The carrot ginger juice was fresh and even my 14 month old liked it! The salad was filling and delicious and the tomato soup also a favorite. I would go back for it all again! The wheat grain bread that came with the soup was soft and perfect for the soup and also my child to eat... I really really like the service here too. Easy. This place is fantastic! The service is great, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is relaxing. This is a popular place with the locals; there are not many tourists. Many mothers bring their newborns here for lunch time but Dutch babies are very polite. They don't cry until they are outside. Overall I highly recommend this cafe. read more
