Came here on a food tour for their apple cake which I've heard tastes the same as Winkel 48 down the street. The apple cake was very good and came withe whipped cream. Café Thijssen in Amsterdam was a wonderful restaurant with a good ambiance. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the nice weather while eating our very flavorful and delicious meal. New girl training was very sweet. Had to keep going inside to order things. Woman behind the bar snapped at me that they have table service but we had no service unless going inside. Didn't mind going inside til the bartender snapped at me saying they have table service but when you ask for things they don't bring them. Bartender also forgot a sandwich that we ended up cancelling because she forgot to order it. Took 20 minutes to get a take out container and we couldn't wait any longer. Slow slow slow service. Also, they spilled an entire beer on my friend which was why we needed takeout containers because he had to go and change his clothes and they didn't even do anything to compensate that but make us wait forever to get a takeout to go and meet him. Cute café perfect for people watching and a drink or light bite. We popped in here for lunch one afternoon and it was packed. Luckily, we scored an outdoor table just as it became open. There were only a handful of servers to handle the crowd, so service overall was lacking. We had a couple drinks and a couple sandwiches; nothing extraordinary but it did the trick. If you're looking for a place to relax in the sun and take the edge off while watching the world go by, this is just right. read more

We were wandering the area and found this local hangout place. This is a great corner with a good view of the city and it's really good people watching! The ambiance is cozy - lots of locals, there are even some strollers, toddlers, and families playing card games. It's like a friend's living room where all stop by for a drink and a snack. The food- delicious tomato soup, mint tea brewed from fresh sprigs, and the bitterballs... A must have. read more

You know how when you're young you dream of living right near the best bar in the most chic part of the city? Café Thijssen is that place in Amsterdam. When I moved here in 2010, I discovered it one quiet evening while looking for a place to sit down, sip on a cappuccino, and gaze at some locals. It's situated right on the Brouwersgracht where the weekly organic food market is held. As expected, there is free Wi-Fi available, although I wouldn't waste my time staring at the computer display here. The view outside and inside is great. The staff is quite friendly. On weekends, a lot of the locals converge at Café Thijssen for drinks and some merry times, including the quintessential Dutch borrel. It gets quite crowded and loud on weekends, actually, when the party lasts until wee hours of the morning. Often, there would be a local musical talent here to entertain with some good live music, otherwise the bar staff has a pretty nice playlist on. All in all, this friendly neighborhood bar is a great place to catch up with friends, get cosy in the winters, and to go crazy without feeling old. I also intend to form a team for their weekly Monday evening quiz night, as I am sure it's a lot of fun! read more

We popped into this establishment while wandering around. It was a Sunday night so it was low key, which is exactly what we wanted. You can't go wrong with a toastie in Amsterdam. My friend got a toastie and loved it. I got the charcuterie platter and absolutely loved it. The crusty bread, the cheeses, olives, meats all were delicious. The bar is quaint, dark and has a great beer selection all at a reasonable cost as it is not a tourist trap. read more

We stumbled onto this spot after our Airbnb host recommended another place around the corner that only served pastry - and we were starving for more food. Great vibe, mostly a local scene - it was dog friendly. The French onion soup was amazing here, to the point where I was almost drinking from the dredges. Extra dark wheat bread and a mug of beer - heaven. Also, let's not forget the apple pie finish with fresh whip cream. We went in twice it was so good! First, we needed a quick meal before hopping over to a museum. We went into Cafe Thijssen for some coffee and breakfast. We each ended up having the yogurt and granola, which was delicious and filling, and had a good amount of fresh fruit. The coffee was perfect, too. The ambiance is warm and friendly. People post up here to work/read. It's all very cozy. Later in the day, we realized we hadn't really been at Thijssen long as we were in a rush, so we returned. There were even less tables than in the morning (which had been fairly packed). Still warm, still cozy, still friendly. We sat at the bar and ordered mint tea and apple pie. The mint tea comes stacked with mint and, like coffee earlier, complimented with a cookie. And the apple pie. Wow. What an apple pie. It's a TON of apples with a modest amount of actual pie. It's also the best apple pie either of us have ever had. Note: We splurged and went nearby later that night to a place that is known for their apple pie, but we both agreed Thijssen's is better. read more

This is the kind of cool Bohemian cafe that you'd expect to see in Amsterdam. Think of an artsy coffee shop in SF or seattle, but they serve beer and alcohol! When I was there it was full of locals and tourists alike. The food was good with some international flavor here and there. Although be warned, it will take half an hour to get a simple sandwich, when in Rome... It is also right next door to Noodermarket which is an awesome organic farmers market... another must see! read more

It's a shame that sandwiches take so long to be made, and for those of us who has soup, they were barely warm when they finally arrived. Sat in this cute lil cafe for about 30 minutes and perhaps had the top 5 worst service I've ever experienced in life. About 10 servers walking around to serve about the same amount of guests and waited forever for a drink, forever for a lunch menu, our waiter never came back to ask what we actually wanted for lunch after about 20 minutes of having our menu, and then I had to ask for our bill 3 times without ever actually ordering. Waitstaff was unpleasant at best. I'm extremely lenient with service - this was an embarrassment to say the least. read more

Cafe Thijssen is one of the few cafes where you can find anything that resembles an American omlet for breakfast. Theirs is done with ham, tomato and cheese with egg, of course, on good brown bread. The only thing missing was a nice big cup of the boiled brown water that Americans call coffee. I didn't make it here for dinner or drinks but the bar was always hopping any time I walked by at night so I'm sure it's a fun time. read more

Food was okay. You just have to be super patient to get anything: to order, to receive your food, to pay. We spent more than 1.5 hours here for a sandwich and a coffee. It seems very disorganized. We asked for our check twice, were blown off the by the waitress, then it took them another 5 minutes to bring out the card. Then it turns out the machine doesn't take credit cards?
