The server tonight was overly preoccupied with my health - how much/what I eat and drink - a curious passion for someone working in an establishment that serves heart attacks in a pan, but I didn't let that diminish my enjoyment of the unhealthy food. Again, I'm Swiss, lol. Now this may sound strange for a restaurant (and dish) centered around cheese, but the weak spot of my fondue was the bread: too white, too soft and just not the right kind. And since they serve it cut only in thick slices, rather than cubes, if you don't know how to cut/tear and "spear" your morsel of bread, you're bound to lose it in the pot and have to perform all kinds of socially incorrect acts of redemption. A small complaint is that it took quite a while for our fondue to be served; at other places I've been, we were served in 10 minutes or so. Also I would have liked to have some potatoes on the side, as well as some of the garnishes, such as pickles and onions. Overall though, I would definitely recommend this spot for the cozy atmosphere, good food, and reasonable prices.

The service is always friendly here and speaks some English. They have the best fondue mix, that they make on-site. However, it is highly recommended to eat it the day of purchase. When you request the fondue cheese, they will ask you for how many people, and if they are big eaters. They will then put together a bag for you, and be sure to ask them for their fondue instructions, as they have special printed instructions on how to best cook and serve it. I have had many other great stinky cheeses from here. But, for Fondue at home, this is my go to supplier.

I was seated at the corner of a long table and felt a bit pressed against the wall, as the bench on which I sat was fairly thin and there was only about a foot of space between the table and the wall (to my back). I don't know about the other menu items, but the price point was a bit high for fondue. Standard fondue is 24 CHF and fondue with morel mushrooms (morrilles) is a few CHF more. Curious, I decided to try the fondue with morels and paired it with a glass of white wine. The wine was good and the fondue tasted fine, but turns out there were barely any discernible morel crumbs in the fondue, far from being worth the upcharge. On top of that, the portion was very small and the bread was not fresh. I felt like I was caught in a tourist trap. I've dined at some other places in Lausanne that felt more comfortable and had better fondue. I'd probably stick with those next time I'm in town.

It was one of very few eating establishments near our hotel, so given its popularity and being aware of the need to have reservations for dinner, we decided to try a mid-day lunch. There was nobody eating indoors, so we selected an outside table. The area is mostly shady and has a nice feel, but tables are rather closely spaced, and if you're sensitive to cigarette smoke, you might not enjoy this. The menu has many classical Swiss dishes, and the place is best known for its outstanding fondue. We ordered this to share. A carafe of water, our wine, and a basket of not-so-fresh crusty bread (uncubed) came first. Then the fondue (in a cast iron pot), my gazpacho, and my husband's salad arrived. The waiter offered a half portion of salad, which was perfect. My gazpacho was slightly textured, had hints of garlic, onion, and peppers, and came with mini-croutons. It was perfect on that hot afternoon. But the star of our lunch was the amazing fondue, which was thick and flavorful. We did have to cut up the bread for dipping, and it certainly could have been fresher. There were lots of sparrows trying to get their share of it. All in all, this was a great afternoon meal at a reasonable cost (for Switzerland, anyhow). We'd do it again in a heartbeat!
