I was finally able to come here again after the pandemic. It was closed for quite a while, and then I learned it was open again, so I stopped by. The menu has changed significantly. And it doesn't seem like people know that it's open again, because there's hardly anybody there. Now they appear to have a regular menu of sandwiches, burgers, salad, and bowls. They also have daily specials that vary. I tried the fish sandwich during my recent visit. It's basically just a grilled fish on a burger bun with lettuce, tomato, avocado, and tartar sauce. It comes with fries. The fries or a little bit of the thicker kind but not steak fries. They are like the fries they used to have at Café blue. Tasty but nothing ground breaking, but that is what you would expect from a bank cafeteria anyway. The bowl options and the salad options do sound really interesting. I may give those a shot next time. But I do love myself a decent grilled fish sandwich. read more

A wonderful little cafe! As soon as I entered, I smelled something delicious! It was the curry special and french fries. The two counter ladies were so nice and efficient as they prepared orders coming in. I was early enough that the real lunch rush had not hit yet, so I asked to see the more formal dining area. It's really nice with tablecloths, huge windows and artwork. A handsome man was the server in that fancy area. I have to get back there for the burger next time. read more

This time, on "Hidden Restaurant, Cheap Eats," we try to find the mythologically tucked away elevators in the quest for "Cafe Blue." Located in the shorter building closer to King Street (not the tall office building), ride the elevators to the 6th floor. These plainly in view elevators are located past the offices on the left side of the building from the Bishop street entrance. Immediately to the left of the elevators on the 6th floor is a small hallway, with a sign pointing to the entrance of the cafe. Seriously, this is like Indiana Jones going to the small local grocery store in terms of "hidden." Maybe this episode should be called "Not So Hidden Restaurant, Cheap Eats." Cafe Blue offers a number of lunch time cafeteria style dining options, in an air conditioned cafeteria style, with grab and go sandwiches, fruit bowls, yogurt, salads, hot menu items, and specials of the day. Coworker one got the turkey, avocado, sprouts, and cheese sandwich, along with fries. The sandwich is more of a panini style melt, with a good amount of moist turkey. Large chunks of avocado were spaced in between the ciabatta style bread. Coworker two got the tofu, kimchee soup for steal of under $4 with lots of tofu in a slight thicker than expected soup. Coworker three (we're expanding the club!) got the fresh catch of the day wrap with fries. The wrap was full of large amounts of moist white fish, with sauteed onions, lettuce, and tomato. It of course came with another pile of fries. I got the crispy chicken lettuce, tomato wrap with fries. This warm wrap consisted of several crispy fried chicken tenders and fresh tomato, wrapped in more crisp lettuce entombed in a flour tortilla. The chicken was crispy and flavored and the mountain of fries were perfect examples of shoestring goodness, all for $6.95! Everything seemed to be pretty good as the only thing left were a handful of fries. There's a free water dispenser for your water bottles. My friends wanted to try here because of the reviews, but with a lot of other restaurants around the area, I'm not too much of a fan of cafeteria food. Kalua Turkey hot plate special - 3 stars - for $9.69, I think they offer only one hot item special a day. I love turkey, but I couldn't eat too much of this because the turkey was dry and bland. I didn't taste any hint of Kalua flavor in it. The brown sauce was ok. Their sweet potato stuffing was unique as well as their mashed potatoes which tasted real (Not boxed) and delicious. If they just sell those two items, I would buy the stuffing or mashed potato ala carte. Lots of tables and chairs so it would accommodate large groups. Finding the elevator is tricky since we had to go into boh and look for it in a little nook. View is nice since it's on the 6th floor, but don't think I'll return unless we have a large group because we can't find seating for lunch in the downtown area. read more

Its great that they opened back up to the public. I went back for the first time since 2020 when Covid had just started to roll into the US/Hawaii. It was sometime in 2022 that they decided to close the restaurant to all non-employees. However, after going back for the first time a few days ago, I was pleased that the food tasted exactly the same, if not slightly better. I had the BOH Burger with fries. It was so good. Nice thick patty, slightly charred, yet it had a nice mouthfeel. Fries were crinkle cut and equally as good. Crispy, not too fat, and perfectly salted. Burger and fries came out to $8.50. Over the past few years, most of the food places around downtown that offered decently priced options has closed, so having Cafe Blue be open to the public again and being able to get a nice filling lunch for under $10 is a nice option to have. read more

I came here for lunch for the first time last week. I've been trying to discover hidden gems and this place was definitely hidden. It's in the BOH building on the 6th floor. Luckily I read a review with directions on how to get here or else I would not have figured it out! Service/Environment- it kind of has a cafeteria vibe going on. But the people who take your order are very enthusiastic which is a plus! I had to wait 5-10 mins for my wrap. Food- it was alright. I was expecting something better but I honestly couldn't complain. My wrap overall was good and it was very filling. I must say their fries were DELICIOUS! That definitely was the best part. They're those skinny crunchy fries. I was very content, even my coworker loved them! Worth the $$$- price is not too shabby! Anything below $10 is about average in downtown. For a fish wrap with fries for less than $10 I think I did alright! Instagram worthy- not the cutest.... but I mean it's supposed to be a quick cafe right?! Added to my go to list?- probably only if I'm craving fries. I do think I need to come again and update my review as I felt MEH after my wrap but those fries definitely hit the spot. VERDICT/VALUE It's really the cafeteria for Bank of Hawaii employees - unless you work in the building there's a lot of competition so while the food is alright and the atmosphere is nice, lower prices and a wider selection of dishes can be had close by... 2. FOOD There are a couple of soups, some prepared meals, and other ready-to-go-items (e.g. chips, drinks, etc.) available as well as the made-to-order items - there is a daily special but the menu today featured just burgers and sandwiches. I ordered the Mushroom Swiss Burger ($9.25) which comes with French fries. I should have taken a pic that showed how many (or really, how few :) mushrooms there were, but at least the beef patty and the Swiss cheese came as expected. So it was alright and the fries were decent, but when coupled with the price (the burger like this much cheaper close by), it's hard to find incentive for a return visit. 3. SERVICE Good for what you would expect in a cafeteria! The food came out in relatively short order. Bankoh employees can show their badge for 10% off; my co-worker shows his Bankoh card and the cashier kindly gave him 10% off anyway - not sure if that is something official. 4. ATMOSPHERE This is the highlight of the place - if you can find it. It's not really well-marked at all in terms of where you need to go once you exit the elevator. But when you find Cafe Blue, you'll find you're really paying for the atmosphere - it's clean, modern, and bright with the windows and view on two sides. One of my go to places in downtown for cheap eats. It's been several months since I've gone and finally went today for lunch. My go to has always been the chicken wrap which is basically a few delicious chicken tenders wrapped up with the usual veggies and a side of fries. As I was waiting to order notice it's still very cheap but now an electronic menu board. The teriyaki cheeseburger with fries caught my eye for $7. Everything is made to order so after about 10 minutes got a freshly made burger. Fries look different since I last went, thinner like mcd than before. Burger had nice grill marks but was lighter in color. Took a bite and while flavorful could tell had a lot of filler. Was more like a meatloaf than a real burger. Teriyaki sauce was underwhelming and lack of any veg made it pretty boring. Fries were crispy and not oversalted. Overall for $7 I can't complain but I will stick with my chicken wrap. read more

Heard about Cafe Blue via Gina B.'s check-ins and review. :) Ate here twice last week and enjoyed the menu items that I have ordered. I highly recommend the CHICKEN PANINI (with side of tossed greens or fries). The chicken is juicy and they pack the panini with arugula. Love love LOVE! I also find the balsamic dressing tasty! I have also tried the Italian panini. Tasty, but I think I was expecting some kind of salami mix and it turned out to taste more like Italian sausage. Great if you like the flavor of Italian sausage. If not, get the chicken panini! I love that they make your order when you get there, and that they have quick pre-packed wraps, salads, and treats like JELLO! The strawberry jello is yummers. I love that it's never packed (yet...), it's clean, there's tons of seating both indoors and outdoors, there's a view, there's tvs, and there are impressive restrooms on the same floor! The location is über-convenient for all downtown workers. Prices are reasonable since most items are tastier than your normal fare downtown. I look forward to more lunches at Cafe Blue. Still have to try the burger and catch of the day! Like the other reviewers mentioned, Cafe Blue is on the 6th floor of Bank of Hawaii's main branch on the corner of King and Bishop (yes, above the where the tellers are and NOT the tower next to it with Starbucks). Holy poop this place was hard to find! Cara O. and I decided we wanted to try something new for lunch, so we pulled out our totally awesome, handy dandy, YELP APP and searched for cafés in the area. We actually had a hard time finding it, first we were on the wrong side of the road. Then we realized it was in the Bank of Hawaii building, but went into the building next to it thinking it was the same thing. Sigh, we have no sense of direction I tell you. We finally realized that you have to actually go into the bank and find the elevators located on the left side and go to the 6th floor. First experience here, I must say I like it. Great place to come for a quick, air-conditioned lunch in downtown. I came here twice to have lunch here with my friends who work at the Bank, and both times have been 5-star. The facility has a lot of seating, flat screen TVs, and quick service. Every day they have a daily special (available in regular and mini size) as well as their regular menu items, such as sandwiches, paninis, and burgers. The grilled fish sandwich is an excellent choice for those watching their waistlines. The fish is moist and the chef puts enough seasoning on their to get rid of the fishy taste. On my second visit I got a mini plate of the fusilli with bolognese sauce. It came with one slice of bread topped with melted mozzarella cheese. At only $4.95, it was the perfect lunch. Either I'm doing really good, or I've wasted many days of my life with reviews, check-ins, posting pictures, tips, UYEs, and more. I'd like to think it's been worth it. Cafe Blue is a hidden little gem of a restaurant on the 6th and top floor of the Bank of Hawaii building in downtown Honolulu (King Street). You have to enter the branch on the ground floor, walk to the parallel elevators, get permission from the security guard, and go up to the top. It's a little confusing once you exit the elevators, as you have to enter a non-descript door and walk around a wall...ah, but once you figure it out, you enter a brand new oasis of food, drink, tables, and flat-screen TVs...and the food is actually good! I've gone many times over the past 2-months and almost always order some iteration of Panini. At about a $8 price point, that's more than reasonable for the sandwich, fries, refillable drink, and the ambiance. This restaurant is open to the public, but so few know about it, the place is filled with mostly BOH employees, all singing in a chorus, 'That's my Bank!' Such nerds. At any rate, there's salads, sandwiches, soups, fountain drinks, hot selections, and more. I hear the chef came from a reputable restaurant in the Kapahulu district, and so far, I've not been disappointed. So, in honor of my 100th review, take my word (and experience) for it, get your okole to Cafe Blue in downtown Honolulu. You won't be disappointed! It just so happened that it was raining hard during my lunch hour and I didn't bring my jacket so I decided to eat upstairs instead. I do no regret it. This place makes it's burgers just as good if not better than Teddy's. Quick Tips: If you're looking for a quick order, get anything but a burger. I love this place. It's an odd thing to say for a "cafe" that is an employee cafeteria, but it charms me, strangely enough. First, it's WAY off the beaten path. I told a friend we were going here for lunch and had to tell her to trust me as we walked into the lobby of the bank. We headed past security and up to the 6th floor cafe. +10 points for a hidden gem, like I'm part of a secret society. Second, in true cafeteria fashion, they have Jell-o and pudding in cups! How can you not love that? +5 points for retro lunch delights. The first thing you'll see is a board on the wall with two to three specials - but they have a lot more on their menu, behind the cash register. First time there, I had the sausage panini and fries (and the fries were perfect: piping hot and creamy-crispy. The next time in, I went for the Bacon-Mac&Cheese sandwich and fries. That's right. Bacon macaroni and cheese, on a SANDWICH. Brilliant! I'd detox with a dinner salad later. And hey, it's on WHEAT bread - that has to count for something, nutritionally. They give you the choice of salad or fries, but come on, this is a no-brainer! Lots of seating, both indoors and outside on a terrace. This place is a miss more than a hit. The rice in their lunch plate is often undercooked. The food itself is mediocre and such a small portion for the price! I now avoid this place for lunch and you should too. Their fried rice special on Fridays is decent but they need to figure out their portions and quality because I always get different portions of fried rice and the meat that I order with is always cooked differently (sometimes burnt, sometimes crispy). To get in, go into the branch (not the tower) and go to the 6th floor, Remember to go back to the 1st floor to get out. Likes: The interior is a vast improvement over the old cafeteria. They also serve a variety of fresh foods, like quinoa salad, tomato bisque and the daily specials come from different cuisines (e.g. ratatouille, pork adobo, kalua pig & cabbage) . I like the paninis too (especially any of them with the garlic aoli). I like the variety of desserts as well. They have pudding, gelatin, tiramisu and rotate different pies (apple, cherry, key lime, banana cream). They also accept credit/debit cards! Dislikes: Prices seem a little high and portions are a bit small for a cafeteria, but the food that is served isn't that of a typical cafeteria (it's better). Favorites: The Italian Panini is my favorite so far. The chef makes his own Italian sausage, and it's served on grilled ciabatta bread with sweet peppers, cheese and garlic aoli. I was only planning on eating a bite to taste it, but I couldn't stop eating it. New places to eat always excite me. I'm looking forward to trying some of the other items on the menu. What I really like about this place is that it was spacious. There's inside and outside seating with the inside displaying sports / news/etc. on flat screen TVs. Had to update my review because I had a very good dish here called the crab stuffed ahi salad. If you've ever had the crab stuffed ahi at Ono seafood, it's the same thing; they put ahi and crab in a nori roll and fry it tempura style with panko crumbs, all served over a bed of iceberg lettuce. 4-stars for that but 3-stars for all the regular stuff. Also, to get to Cafe Blue, go against all your intuition and go INSIDE the bank, where all the regular bank customers go. You'll see elevators on one side and use those elevators to up the 6th floor. read more

I found out that my sister-in-law (Brother's wife's sister, is my sister-in-law right?) works at the Hawaian Telcom building just a couple weeks ago and we decided to have a lunch date! What do we do when we don't know where to have lunch in downtown?!? YELP IT! I usualy am a loner at lunch, I go to fort street mall or somewhere along those lines and just get me a quick to-go meal! But this time, I wanted to take her soewhere that we could sit down and catch up! I yelped "downtown lunch" and cafe blue was on the first page! It took me a while but I realized that I've been hear before about 2 years ago with a friend but I didn't realize it was Cafe blue until one of the reviews said that it was located on the 6th floor! Then it came to me! All I remember eating there was a small salad and soup, But my friend ordered I think a panini and thats what made me want to come back to day and take my sister-in-law! So i picked her up from work and we walked to the Bank of Hawaii building and took the elevators up to the 6th floor to Cafe blue! It looked even better than when I came 2 years ago! We stopped at the menu and decided what to get. I got the Turkey Avacado Club with fries (I know, so bad for me. I will work it off tonight at the YMCA, I swear!) and my SIL got the Suzy Q burger with half toss nad half fries. My club was awesome! I mean I dont think I ever had a club so good before! It consisted of: Turkey, Avocado, swiss cheese, bacon, alfalfa sprouts, tomatoes, and pesto all in a warm crispy ciabatta bread! It was so good! I was gonna get clam chowder but when I seen a plate that the lady in front of me, the portion was huge! So i just stuck to the club. We went at about 12:45ish, so the line wasnt that long considering they close at 2. The ladies behind the counter were really nice! And that alone deserves 1 star! There is also a big seating area! and you can sit ouside and enjoy the view! I have'nt been here for breakfast but the items on the breakfast menu look delicious! And they have Fried rice fridays! Okay, so I have worked in downtown for almost 5 years now, and have decided that this is the best place to get a fresh fish sandwich. Considering cost, and what you get it gets no better. With fries or a side salad for less than $8? I'm really no sure what else you want. Plate lunches for about $7 too? They change it up and you can have brown rice! Hidden little gem. If you didn't know, there is a cafe inside the Bank of Hawaii building in downtown HNL. It's on the 6th floor, has it's own little sitting area inside and outside. Very clean, AC, TV sets, open and relaxed. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of food is on par. I tried their Chicken panini, sprouts, provolone, garlic aioli, slices of chicken breast on ciabatta bread, also comes with either salad or fries for $8.95! So I couldn't finish the whole thing, but I've become sorta a small eater. But the portions are quite nice for almost anyone! For those with sweet tooths, check this place out for the Freal machine! They also serve jello and pudding bowls (childhood nostalgia). You have your choices of fountain or bottled drinks. Back when I was a temp, I had heard about this place from co-workers but I never really had the desire to go eat there. Now, because they were giving us free lunches at new hire orientation, it was finally time for me to check this place out. It wasn't that hard to find if you know BOH's location. It's not in the corporate tower, but like what the other reviews said "hidden" in the main branch building. Being familiar with this place, I entered through the side (the breezeway between the tower and the main branch) and went up the elevators to the 6th floor. The cafe is open to the public, but I think you do need to check in with security because you won't be able to go up without a badge or something? Unless you were like me and hitched a ride with other people haha. A co-worker told me that it was newly renovated and it was pretty nice looking. I had no idea what it looked like before though. They serve a variety of sandwiches, soups, and desserts. They also have like somen salad and drinks. I think they have a daily lunch special and for today it was something like kalbi chicken with rice, but for my first time eating there... I decided to go get a grilled chicken panini for $7.50 and I also got cream puffs for $3.50 lol :) The panini came with a side of tossed salad or fries, your choice. I chose the salad and it came with this reallly good balsamic dressing. The chicken was tasty and I liked the bread they used. A friend/co-worker got the italian panini and she told me she didn't really like it because she couldn't taste the sausage? Haha, she said it was like eating air.. Anyways, the cream puffs were alright for a cafe, but I'mma stick to Liliha Bakery for those. We ate there at about 12:30, so it was pretty packed. The line was kinda long, but once you have your food..there are a lot of tables and there's even a large tv screen. I like how it's nice and cool in there, they even have couches. The place empties out at about 1-1:30ish I noticed, which is about the time we stayed till because it's a good place to relax and just talk. Cafe Blue is basically a cafeteria with a trendy name. Its pretty darn good. I like going here for their sandwiches - they have some unique twists on old favorites: 1) Reuben - their twist on this classic is Kim Chee instead of Kraut. . . 2) Grilled Mac & Cheese Sandwich with BACON - far surpasses the standard Grilled cheese sandwich. 3) Swordfish sandwich with pesto aoili - sure beats the McFillet of fish, any day. Hands down, a step above fast food establishments. 20% discount if you are BOH employee. Cafe Blue is located on the 6th floor of the downtown BOH building. My absolute faves are the specials of the day. I literally plan my weekly schedule around the specials and what I want to eat! Some of my most fave specials lately: roast pork in sausage gravy, chicken in mushroom gravy, salmon katsu, pork tonkatsu, shoyu chicken and my list could go on and on....Everything is always fresh and well prepared. Very clean and impeccably maintained. Yes, I may be a little biased as I DO work here at the Bank. But I am VERY thankful that our employee cafeteria has delectable meals at a great price. This is a "hidden" downtown gem. The next time you're down here in the financial district give it a try. I doubt you'll be disappointed. There are many different menu options for you to try and enjoy! P.S. The balsamic vinaigrette dressing is DELICIOUS and you can even purchase some to take home. read more

I am a bit biased towards Cafe Blue since I visit practically every day and receive an employee discount. :D However, while most lunch specials and soup/salads are decent, there are some bad ones, on occasion. The food is just not consistent from one day to the next. For example, I used to love the fish and chips lunch special, but the last few times it was oily and soggy, a major disappointment. I believe they fry up big batches at a time and leave it under the warmer (piled high) instead of making it to order. Once I bought a bento to take home and it was good...but the next time the fried chicken was raw on the inside. Yeah, not very pleasant. They did refund me the next day when I mentioned it, apparently I wasn't the only complaint. The staff are all amazing and work their butts off (non-bank employees), which is a huge reason why I don't mind visiting often. My go-to's are the mini breakfast, salads, and chowders. Again, it's convenient and fairly reasonable, which is what gets me back here. 3.5 stars. read more

I've been trying Cafe Blue off and on for a few weeks now and it's pretty darn good. Their daily specials are almost daring, especially when you frame it in the context of a huge bank's cafe. And the grab and go salad is a good deal; the protein to salad ratio is good. Seating is inside or outside and it is never too crowded. read more
