A fancy Christmas dinner well spent. Bf and I had a reservation for 8:45PM and got seated right and around the kitchen. Because it was the holiday, there were 2 set menus that you get to pick from: as for us, it was the celebration menu ($$$ and maybe more food/dessert). While we were used to the table dining at Michelin restaurants, we were pleased to be watching staff cooked while enjoying our dishes. I must say, if you don't wanna be seated for 3+ hours, then this isn't the place for you. FYI: we ended our dinner closer to midnight. Although our server was nice, he was quick to explain and just walked off while finishing his last few words (not sure why?). He didn't seem friendly, rarely smiled, and quick to place down plates as he was talking. Also, he didn't scrape off any crumbs or food residue off of our placemats which is very odd, given that most, if not all Michelin restaurants do that. Even when he did (which was only 1 time, he did it w/ a napkin and just slide it across). What the heck? Didn't seem like he had the Michelin etiquette but who knows - it was Christmas Day and maybe he didn't want to be there. Either way, that's why this place got a 1 star deduction. Food was outstanding, except for the 3 flavors of butter. For the life of me, I couldn't touch it. It tasted absolutely garbage and the bread was cold. So there was no way I could even taste it, let alone swallow it. Ambiance was nice. Despite sitting in front of the kitchen, it wasn't loud. Everything was toned down and in tune. I also wanted to point out there were 2 chefs in the kitchen, NOT busy cooking/working, were looking at 2 female guests, sitting at the table at a distance. They constantly took their phone out to text or whatever, and put it back in the pockets. They did that for a few times and then touched the food. I was NOT a fan. The head chef thanked us afterwards as we knew who he was since he was there calling all the shots, finalizing the plates, etc. Presentation was great. Dessert was unique and tasted so good - w/ a strong flavor of alcohol but otherwise, it must've been one of my favorite desserts I've ever tasted. Michelin Star Is Well Deserved..... Caelis is the flagship restaurant in the Hotel Ohla Barcelona. We stayed there for 5 nights in late November 2024 and had dinner at Caelis on a Wednesday evening. Here are the pros and cons of our meal. Pros: - Caelis is a gorgeous place in subtle ways. Everything looks to be "tied with a bow" but it isn't stuffy or fastidious. Rather, we felt comfortable with it's down to earth elegance. - Dinner is only available in a tasting menu style. We had a version of the "Earth and Sea" with the "earth" or meat portions replaced by fish forks pescatarians. There were probably 12 courses - all of them quite small except for the "main dish" - but their heavenly taste and texture erased any qualms about the size. And each group of little plates was paired with an excellent wine. - The servers...young women ahead of their time...moved things along with distinction. - Pablo, the Sommelier, served with panache and a full-bodied story for his selections. He's a star who brought experience, knowledge and a rapier wit to the meal. Any doubt about the cost (120 Euros per person for food and 85 Euros for wine) was quickly forgotten each time Pablo appeared with a sly smile and another personal tale about the contents of his bottle. He demystified the complexities with his background stories and brought fun to the meal. Con: - The only con, at least to these American diners, was the 8 PM opening time of the restaurant. Our systems are accustomed to a start of 6 PM...7 PM at the latest...but for an experience like Caelis, we made an exception. Go if you can, but be sure to make reservations. read more

At a very fancy restaurant that serves flavor-intense amuse bouches, I have always wondered if I can have a full meal dedicated to them. I have finally found such a restaurant in Caelis. Not only do they start you with *seven* amuse bouches, all the subsequent courses are packed with flavor. I loved every single bite! Although most reservations are for two persons, the restaurant is of good size and can serve a range of group sizes, ranging from one-person counter seatings to larger group seatings in private areas. The staff is very attentive and works well together as a team. They will follow your lead with the pacing of the meal. After 11 cities of exceptional dining across Spain, we chose Caelis to cap our gastronomical journey through Barcelona. Despite its Michelin star and €200+ per person price tag, it was our most disappointing meal of the entire trip. We've dined at Barcelona's oldest restaurant and numerous Michelin-starred establishments throughout our adventure, all delivering memorable experiences. I was visiting Barcelona and I wanted to try a Michelin restaurant. I liked that Caelis had a lunch special for 55 euros per person so I decided to make a reservation. We were sat with a view of the open kitchen. It was really enjoyable being able to observe the staff create each meal. I found it a great deal trying a Michelin star restaurant that included a starter, main course, cheese or dessert, and coffee. Also, a choice of wine (red or white). I've been to a few Michelin Star restaurants and honestly this one did nothing for me. It was okay at best. I think sometimes restaurants try too hard to be avant garde that they forget to make the food taste good. We did the lunch Pre-Fixe and I ordered the Fish which has this strange flavorless gelatin sheet draped over it. Honestly it was very unappetizing. A little acid and salt with a crispy fish skin would have been preferable over whatever that was. My daughter a pork dish that was horribly overcooked. This seemed to be the theme of the meal. Not to mention the service was very snooty and not very attentive. Probably should have just saved some money and found a hole in the wall tapas bar. read more

I have been to a few Michelin star restaurants, and I can honestly say this one deserves to have its star stripped. The service was honestly horrible. The wine pairing only covers 4 of the dishes. Over 25€ for a .1 serving of a glass from bottles that we looked up to be less than 20€. What a joke! The restaurant was extremely hot and we noticed very obnoxious men making women at the bar uncomfortable. We had a later seating, which I'm not sure contributed to our ice cold food and rushed service - but it definitely did not help. Our server saw we finished our bread. Offered to bring us more, and we never received it. Our sommelier missed an entire service of wine and just said "oops! Sorry!" My main entrees, fish and steak, were served colder than room temperature. They were clearly prepared hours beforehand and were not bothered to be kept under a lamp at the least. The chef sat at the bar, drinking with some young guys. While this is fine at an overachieving restaurant, he should have been more attentive to the huge issues that this restaurant was providing its guests. All in all, I will never return and will never, ever recommend this restaurant to anyone again. read more

We sat right in front of the open kitchen and it was really amazing seeing all the effort going into each dish. It was a really intense experience The food was mindblowing but the main dish was not really for me (they ask to choose between pigeon and rabbit meat). I said I would rather eat a rabbit and I ended up with this grilled round patty of rabbit meat mixture. As I said this is probably personal preference but I didn't like it. We did the regular tasting menu with wine pairing and the staff did an amazing job presenting and explaining each dish and wine to us. Being from New York we have a pretty high expectations for restaurants like this and, I'd say this is a very good value for experience, food and wine. We made a last minute reservation at a fine dining restaurant in Barcelona and was happy to find Caelis. Now I know why they have availability. First off the restaurant's ceiling is really low (they are on top of a hotel lobby so they don't exactly have the whole floor) so I felt a little bit claustrophobic. The food was decent but I had to take off one star for the bad service comparing to other find dining restaurants. For example: - Their service felt really rushed. We barely sat on down for 2 mins and they immediately dumped all the amuse-bouche on our table. - They never gave us the wine list and just asked 'do you want white or champagne or red' - They never used the crumb sweeper to clean the bread crumbs on the table. So I had to do it myself Throughout the meal. - We were drinking sparkling water but in the middle of the meal they refilled us with plain water. So I had to drink half sparkling and half plain water. - We asked the waitress to give us more croissants. She took the bread bucket and refilled it with brioche instead. The overall experience just felt really rough/rushed/harsh, which is the exact opposite of what you want going to a nice restaurant. If I go to a fast food place I would have no problem with it. But compare to other international fine dining place their service is a failure. read more

On a recent trip, we were looking to do a fancy dinner and chose Caelis. The food and dining experience were wonderful and it was a great location. Also important to note, is that making a reservation was relatively easy. Unlike many Michelin starred restaurants, they didn't have a designated time a month in advance that you had to book. The tasting menu was reasonably priced as compared to many other fine dining restaurants I researched. My only complaint was that we didn't like a couple of the wine pairings. There were two whites that were very good (for three courses which meant I drank most of the first glass with the first course and was disappointed during the second). But of the two reds, one of them was more of a dessert wine. There was also a cider at the end that seemed like a strange choice and neither of us liked.
