I am not going to lie. I did not want to leave a review because I genuinely felt bad. It was clean, looked like it was a nice restaurant but was totally empty of customers and almost looked like they were closing soon, which I found odd. Our server was so sweet and for her I'd give a 5/5. We ordered the enchilada special, an appetizer, a kids quesadilla, and I can't remember what my husband ordered. The presentation was good. It LOOKS good, but the flavor was far from what I was hoping for. The rice and beans were pretty rough. We love rice and beans and barely ate it because it was just so over seasoned. My enchiladas were not the best but I ate as much as I could. My daughter said the quesadilla was burnt tasting. My husband said his was ok. The bill was WAY higher than I would expect for subpar food. I think maybe they need to adjust some seasoning and price accordingly. It could have been an off day and I always attempt to go back to my bad reviews for redemption so if I go back I will update this. For now 3 is the best I'd give and it's for the workers. read more

Saw this driving by and had not noticed it before. The California Mexican part got us to go in. The jazz music definitely kills the vibe. The chips were seemingly not fresh. The salsa was okay. We ordered the cheese dip and never got it. ‍ food came out and looked okay, avocado on the fries was also largely spoiled. First two bites and it's not good at least the California burrito and the carne asada fries. All we could taste was pepper. I'm not trying to bash them at all, we wanted it to be good, the older guy taking orders was nice and apologetic and didn't have us pay even though we offered but really we couldn't eat it. Seriously the pepper! Like black pepper. 10 minutes later all I can taste is pepper still. Being from San Diego doesn't give us street credit, however, I definitely don't think this place represents California at all, but maybe it's a part of California I have never been to. I hope they change because this won't flourish. Go to La Parilla, it's not disappointed so far which again sucks because we like to find and see small places do great. I had moderately high expectations based on the other reviews, so I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. As a 3 star review indicates everything was just ok. The salsa lacked flavor and spice. When I asked if they offer a spicer version they said no. As a Mexican restaurant they should at a minimum have at least 2 or 3 varieties in my opinion. The chips did not seem fresh. The appetizer of queso bites were ok. There was four of them and they were stuffed pretty full of cheese. The dipping sauce was solid. They were the highlight of the meal. My entree of the shrimp quesadilla was way overpriced (16.00) for what it was. Once again it was decently sized but fairly bland. It was also skimpy in the shrimp department. For that price it didnt come with any sides either. For some reason they were cranking jazz music. It was so loud and seemed out of place. For 60.00 before tip for a dinner of two, I'll pass on this place. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in town. They have the best soups! I love their Cactus Flower Combo w/ a cup of soup, a fresh, delicious salad, and a quesadilla w/ cheese and your choice of meat. I prefer to sit by the fountain as I enjoy seeing & hearing the sound of the fountain. I like the decor: archway doors and Spanish themed art. We're from California and we've been having the hardest time finding good food in this area. We've been here a year...and have yet to find something that reminds us of home. So when we stumbled across this restaurant, we only went in with low expectations. We were seated immediately by a very friendly gentleman and the decor of the restaurant is right up California alley. The first culinary test (the guacamole) immediately passed. I almost cried lol because it straight-up reminded me of home. The main courses were utter perfection. The fish tacos (imo...the truly ultimate test of "California" cuisine) were immaculate. Well...one of my last reviews was about another Mexican restaurant in Dothan being the best, and I might have wrote too soon. Cactus Flower Cafe is now in the running for best Mexican restaurant in Dothan according to Rhett. The decor is not one of Mexican fiesta like every other Mexican restaurant. Cactus Flower is pretty quaint and has a fine dining vibe. But they do bring on the free chips and salsa! Cactus Flower's salsa is served on a plate. The salsa is a good mix of tomato, onion, vinegar, lime juice, and other spices. I ate almost 4 bowls of it by myself. The bowl it is served in is kind of small though like a dish. Finally after the third dish, the waitress brought out a real bowl. I had like 6 different items I wanted to try off the menu and all the photos on Yelp made the choice tougher. I finally decided on the chimichanga because I was curious of the Santa Fe sauce that is drizzled on top of it. This was the best chimichanga I've had in my life. Originally, I picked pork but I was informed the kitchen was out of pork. I chose beef and it was a marvelous choice. This was not your grounded up hamburger meat, but shredded beef like a roast. The cheese stuffed inside was melted and went well with the beef. I am guessing the cheese was monterrey jack. The Santa Fe sauce that came on top was a spicy homemade ranch type of sauce. I chose the cilantro lime rice and black beans. Both were stellar choices. The cilantro lime made rice actually taste...well, leg-end-ary. I do not write that lightly because we are talking about rice. Rice! But I was surprised how much flavor the rice packed. The black beans were really good too. It seemed like it had some kind of vinegarette added to them. My sweet tea was refreshingly sweet and went extremely well with the spiciness of the Mexican food. One dish down...I have 5 or more dishes left to try at Cactus Flower. It will be a worthwhile endeavor. read more

Passing through Dothan, hit the Cactus Flower for lunch. Had the lunch recommendation of beef quesadilla, salad and soup. The Chicken Posole soup is fantastic. Really more of a stew than soup it bursts with flavor and spice. Rich and flavorful The restaurant was otherwise empty, which can be awkward but the servers was cheerful and accommodating. For a chance stop we won. Even the chip, salsa and guacamole were worth the visit. read more

Um...simply bland and blah. I visited the Cactus Flower Café in Navarre, FL and it was absolutely fantastic. I expected the same here; I was let down in every way. The food? Bland and tasteless. The chips were cold and stale. The salsa was obviously commercial (as in the mildest Pace Picante sauce known to man). The corn chowder was an unseasoned white chowder base with a few kernels of corn in it...microwaved to the temperature of the sun. My entrée was the daily special - the Empanadas del Cielo, ugh. I will say this...nothing was BAD (except the cold stale tortilla chips)...it was just BLAND and obviously pre-prepped, canned, or bottled food. If you don't like seasoning, freshness, spice, or anything that makes Mexican food delicious then this is the place for you. Lastly, the service was...fine? It was slow and uninterested in the table or service, but wasn't rude...so...I guess that's fine. read more

Dothan Alabama Rawks! (Roll Tide!) Recommended to us we're glad we went. Received a double batch of their Chips and Salsa - very nice! Nice and quiet atmosphere on a Saturday evening.The wife ordered and loved their Mexican Salad with Chicken. I went for their Quesadilla with Steak and Shrimp. I dove right in before I remembered to take this photo. We both polished off our Entrees. For Dessert we shared their amazing Flan, delicious Coffee and hot Tea. An Elite Member friend recommended more detail on this review...so, here it goes - I know I am not the only one who examines the silverware whenever I go out. This place provided silver that appeared to have been run through a set of steel rollers. But hey, a fork is a fork right? The table cloth was of finest linen and we appreciated the "fine dining" feel of the restaurant. Our waitress was engaging and we enjoyed her interaction with us. Upon presenting our bill she noticed my attempt to get every little bit of the caramel sauce drizzled over the Flan. She commented that "Licking the plate would not be a faux pas." My coworkers had to chew through flour tortillas used on their tacos like it was actual leather, struggling to rip each and every bite. This place used to be amazing! Truly remarkable food and service. The restaurant is small and unassuming, but the flavors and attention to quality are strong. I ordered a margarita on the rocks, and wow, was it good! The salsa they provided with the complimentary chips was also very fresh and tasty, but the order of guac was something to write about! There, I just did. I also had the Burrito, which was no small item. Likely the best burrito I have ever had. Filled with cheese, shredded pork and smashed pinto beans, the flour wrap was toasted to perfection offering a very nice texture to the dish. Me and the wife tried Cactus Flower last night and it is a nice restaurant! The salsa was a little chunky for my liking but got some queso and it was tasty but the star of the show was the chimichanga! I went for the pork filling and it came out and was so cheesy inside! Sorry, but the past few times the quality standards of the food has severely declined. Missing items in the dinners from the description on the menu, no onions or peppers included on my last order. The rice has been dry and overcooked. And they used to serve a small green salad with the food, lettuce with some tomatoes, but still that was one of the things I liked about this place. Is it because we've been doing take outs? That shouldn't matter. They used to include the salad in the take out, but not the past few times. Is it because of a crew change due to covid? Probably. But the quality standards still must remain, otherwise you lose business. I'm giving 3 stars as an overall from the past year. But the past couple months it's barely a 2 star. I live about 5 hours away so I'm unlikely to get back soon and I wanted to say how good it was. Service was excellent. It was the day after New Years and I was seated immediately. The waiter was attentive, refilled my drink several times without being asked, and the food came out quickly. The chips and salsa were good and the tea was solid. The California burrito was a tad pricey but absolutely great. I loved it. The beans and rice were much better than the typical Mexican restaurant. Overall5/5. OMG! So I see this place when I come to and from work. I had a taste for something fresh. I looked at the menu online and decided to try it on my day off. This place did not disappoint. Appetizer I had the fresh guacamole and salsa. For my entree, I had the Mahi fish taco (Bob's recommendation) which was absolutely delicious with black beans and cilantro-lime rice. Everything was flavorful, fresh and delicious! The service was superb. Taylor was very knowledgeable of the menu. And her service was amazing. I sat outside because the weather was gorgeous.
