I feel bad writing this review but I feel compelled to do so. I have shopped at Cabona's a few times. Mostly looking for sun hats or gloves. I will say their selection is great. Men's clothing selection is nice But I probably wouldn't be able to find anything in the women's section in my size. At least not in the times I have been to the store. That said, I have a few qualms with customer service. I personally have not had any problems but my teenager, who has been in a couple. The last two occasions were their last. The first time they wanted to purchase a pair of gloves. The gloves were 32.99. My teenager had two 20s. They were told that they no longer take cash. I found that odd because I had been in just a few weeks prior and used cash. Thinking it was a new policy I figured no big deal, I'll just go in and get the gloves which I did. I used my card and there was no issue. A few months later my teenager went in again, this time with a card, and again tried to get an item. This time a beanie. They were told that their card was not accepted. When I asked for clarification my teenager said they didn't even run it they just said they weren't accepting that card. It's a MasterCard. I have no idea what the problem was this time. My teenager also told me that they were followed around the store and felt uncomfortable. My teen was there with their friend. Both kids are amazing young people who never get in trouble, are not rowdy, and are very respectful. My teen is actually quite shy and so going up to buy items causes a bit of anxiety. When they encounter this issue with the card they just put the hat down and left with no words. Since this experience my teen and their friend have not gone back. They both felt unwelcome in the store and like they shouldn't be there. Their stories of how they've been treated when going in alone (they're 16 so old enough to shop on their own) has really soured my opinion and has made me avoid Cabona's. read more

We only get to Truckee once a year...and it's a good thing! I would need a separate "Cabona's" job! The most irresistible seasonal wear anywhere! Their fabrics and colors are next level.! Carmen and Sydney are the best! I came in about four months ago to visit a friend and fell in love with this white Russian hat. I went home for Christmas and my mom fell in love with it too, and wanted one for herself. I called them and asked if they would be able to ship one out to me and although it was out of stock, they did an order just for me and then personally shipped it out to my address. They are super super sweet and have a very nice selection of decently priced high-quality clothing items. Highly recommend!!!! read more

I have shopped at Cabonas for the past 23 years and never had a bad experience. My husband loves going there too, especially around the holidays, and when we walk in, it feels like we're coming home. The staff are consistently, friendly and helpful, even when it's bustling in there. One day they even had a friend coming in to help because they were so busy, and that man was extraordinarily pleasant as well. This was my first trip to Truckee. Met friends who have been there a number of times. After a very disappointing breakfast we had to find our way around a 3 vehicle accident. Not terribly auspicious but despite all that I have fallen in love with Truckee. We wandered in and out of shops they'd been to before. I really wasn't in the market for anything until a hobo bag sitting in the window of Cabona's called to me. Needless to say I went in and asked to see it. The sales clerk was so excited to show me all the features. I kept thanking her and explaining I wanted to buy it. So she put it back in the window and took me to the back of the shop to show me all the other colors. I'm so glad she did! I got purple instead of pink...purple being my favorite color. I should add that the first question I asked was the price. Talk about reasonable! I actually got 2 bags for the price if one because the hobo has a clutch inside. After seeing the prices in some of the other shops I was thrilled to have this within my reach. The shop wasn't crowded and I'm afraid that may be because of all the negative reviews. So, I will start by saying I love their merchandise. The store itself is so cute and well stocked. My husband wanted a few new shirts so I suggested we check out Cabona's. While he was in the dressing room trying things on I decided to look at some hats/try them on. That's when I noticed an older brunette lady STARING at me. Not at all in a friendly way. It was like she thought I was going to shoplift or something. It made me very uncomfortable. As soon as I chose a hat she offered to "hold it" for me. We've wandered into this store a few times, and have had decent customer service every time. I actually like that they don't hover over you, or make too much conversation. They allow you to browse and look at your leisure. I am not sure why others have had such a negative experience. My partner has found quite a few pieces of clothing here, as they carry the Kuhl brand for men, and they always have a shirt or pants that he likes. The clothes are obviously for a mountain town and people who do outdoorsy things. Here is my only complaint about this store - the women's clothes are awful. We are both in our mid-40's, and do a lot of outdoor activity, so we both tend to like clothes from places like REI. For men, this place is exactly that - nice clothing for an outdoor lifestyle. The women's clothes are for a very older set (mid-50's to 60's) and ugly non functional weird items with terrible patterns. I would LOVE it if they started carrying more items for slightly younger women with more classic taste, and a variety of more outdoorsy brands (exoficcio, Patagonia, Mountain Hardware, Marmot, etc) that have cute clothes for women younger than retirement age. read more

Cabona's is a pretty fun store.. on the men's side. I had a great experience, despite the prices. The staff was very helpful and kind and there were greats items. I found some of the most comfortable shoes I have ever had and left with 3 pairs. The genuine leather belts looked really nice and I wanted to get a couple, but after the amount I was spending on shoes I had to pass. I was so impressed I started this review draft and was surprised to see the business was rated low, so I started reading the reviews. Feel free to look at others, but upon mentioning to my wife and mother that was with me, I was shocked that the comments I brought up they completely agreed with. On the women's side the staff was very unfriendly and watched them as if they where up to no good. Like everyone entering that side of the store is a thief. I don't know if the staff encounters it a lot or something with all the people floating through Truckee, but when I spent the insane amount of money I spent there.. that's not an experience I want to hear about it be a part of. I hope to visit the next time I am in Truckee and give them another shot. I'll be making sure to talk to a manager as well though. I can't provide a better rating unless I hear the business is willing to work on it. read more

I was in Truckee with my wife looking to shop around, and upon entering their store, they immediately pounced on me and asked if I could please put on a mask. I was confused, as I was wearing a neck gator covering my nose and mouth. I responded that I was wearing a mask, the overly aggressive woman than clarified that I needed a medical grade mask. I was very confused and I had not been aware that was a law in Nevada County. Turns out it's not. I happily left the store as I would not want to support a business that treats potential paying patrons that way. Take your money else where as they do not deserve it. read more

I bought a ton of sturdy t-shirts here. Also some flannels. Spent over $1500 total. Be careful with the hiking shorts though as they run small and you cant fit your wallet in side pocket. Make sure you save your receipts if you want to return something. Best men's store I've seen west of the Mississippi. Ladies who waited on me were sweet and delightful. Not sure how they got such poor reviews. Looks like some changes were made very positive after COVID. The leather jackets don't look to be very good quality so I would stay away from them. Also they need more XXL sizes I think. Nice experience overall. read more

My family was visiting Truckee today. As we passed by Cabona's, we noticed that they had a chair blocking the doorway, and a printed paper on the chair informing the public of their mask policy. We also noticed that the size of their clothing store was chopped in half and sparsely stocked. I guess that's what happens when you treat visitors and locals poorly. As you can see from the numerous previous reviews, there seems to be a "sizing up" of customers, based on appearance or race. Not cool. read more

Cabona's, I've been shopping here FOREVER! They do an AMAZING job the buying is spot on! The staff has always been friendly, and I always find what I'm looking for. With COVID I understand that folks are stressed, but the folks who have written horrible reviews, make me sad. If the rule is to wear a mask , in the shop, why not just do it or don't go in . Rude, rude, rude. We walk in because my husband wanted to buy one of the pendletons in the window. He had a mask on but was loudly and rudely told he can't wear "that kind" of mask (it was a gator). Needless to say we just walked out, it's their store and their rules I guess. Just so absolutely embarrassing to be berated by the employees for wearing a mask that he just wore on an airplane. We will never step foot in this store again. I have never been in a store with such obnoxious employees. They must be doing well if they turn away business like this. read more

Gayle recognized the dresses in the Carbona's window immediately. They were designed by the same person who made here wedding dress and and another dazzling number that she wore at a friend's wedding. The store itself features a nice selection of men's clothing within one store front area and women's clothing and accessories in the other part of this double wide business. Gayle's friends also know the folks who own this and other Truckee businesses. During our visit we enjoyed chatting about Bay Area matters and the current slow business environment in Truckee. It's all nice stuff and I would love to spend a little more time here and have Gayle's help dressing me up a bit. Then it would be her turn... read more

This store is amazing. High quality clothing, clean environment and great customer service. The crew goes above and beyond for their customers and it shows. Its disappointing reading the comments about the mask being enforced. I really dislike wearing a mask. But I follow the rules. And that's what the employees at cabonas are doing because this is their lively hood. It takes one person to report that the owner and employees aren't following the rules and bam they are introuble with either a fine or even being shut down. Went in the store today to find a shirt for my husband. The owner comes over to me right when my husband walks away and asked me to put my drink on the counter while I'm in the store, I said "no thanks, I'll go outside" it was very off putting. We always go into this store when we're in Truckee and enjoy it! My husband always has great luck in finding clothes he likes. This last trip he bought a really unique stylish jacket that looks terrific on him and I know he won't see anywhere else. Service is always friendly and helpful. I don't have as good of luck in the women's department. I read another review that said the clothing was for older women but I found it was just the opposite. I did find the cutest winter hat this last time in, but not much success in actual clothing. read more

We got there at 4:55pm and they closed down the store early. It said it was open till 5pm but the lady told us they are already closed. I was disappointed. The owner was still in the store and saw us trying to look at some shirts and didn't even say anything. What kind of owner doesn't like a customer who could easily become a regular client? I would not normally give this kind of review ....but... I was super excited to see this place because of the history and I had heard they had beautiful quality items here. This visit was kind of odd in a the way we were treated. The minute we walked in..they said hi but then I realized they were looking at me weird.. I turned around and to see if someone was behind me and then looked at my clothes to see if there was something on me....and soon realized we were being sized up. Weird... there weren't many in the store so we went and looked around. They have beautiful items and I was especially interested in some sweaters. As I was looking the women were kind of spread around the store looking at each other. I soon realized they were giving each other looks. As people walked in, they sized them up and then almost gave a not yes or no... it was crazy. The funny thing was, while I was there a regular customer came in and they started smiling and said get (so and so) I assumed it was the owner. She ran out and the whole atmosphere changed. I was almost pushed out of the way so they could get items for her. I like that they love return customers but... hmmmm. The do have beautiful, quality items...but..... I never did get to really look around. as we were leaving a lady actually moved out of the way so my husband could get through. I am to trying to assume anything but he is african american and they way she turned and was almost startled by him... We werent sure how to take any of our visit... Picked out a shirt as a gift for my baby's daddy. They didn't have his size. They ordered it and called me immediately when it arrived and it was perfect. The staff has always been super friendly and helpful. The owner also has a heart of pure gold adopting dogs with health problems that no one else would adopt in a million years and giving them a great quality of life. My girlfriend and I, went into this store in an attempt to buy a sweater we saw in the window as a gift. We were greeted by an ensemble of associates informing us that while wearing our masks they weren't quite high enough. Apparently not only does your mask need to cover your nose and mouth but your eyes as well. We apologized and tried to accommodate but we were soon confronted again by an elderly woman informing us that our masks still were not yet high enough. We abandoned our sweater search and replied we would be on our way out and was met with "that would be just fine". It is as if she just didn't want us there. Keep in mind we have lived in Tahoe for 19 years collectively. I have never reviewed a business before. This was offensive enough that I stopped my day to sign up for this service and let you know they only want a specific kind of money from a specific kind of person. Went in with a few friends while walking around town. Ambience felt a bit off. Looked at a few articles of clothing and noticed I was being watched to a point it made me uncomfortable. I ended up purchasing some clothes, and noticed my friends were no longer in the store. I am a Tahoe local and decided to "shop local' today. While walking down the main street of Truckee I came upon this store. They had beautiful men's shirts in the window. Upon entering I walked over to the shirts which were neatly folded on a shelf. I picked one up hoping to find a short-sleeved shirt. The man (owner) said very rudely, 'what are you looking for.' When I indicated 'short-sleeves' he said those aren't........and walked back over to where he was folding clothes. Would have been nice if he had pointed me toward the shelves of short sleeved shirts. I immediately walked out and will not set foot in this over-priced store again and will tell my family and friends of my experience. Nothing worse than being treated rudely. I had the worst customer service experience I've ever had with this owner at Cabonas. The owner of this store is an absolute jerk and the employees are his frightened cowards. We were visiting Tahoe/Donner on a family trip and I forgot to pack underwear. I needed some mens boxer briefs and I called this store at 5:55pm and asked the owner if he carried them and he said yes. I was three minutes away I got the store at 5:58pm and the door was locked. Apparently they close at 6pm. Both the owner and a woman (employee) were in the store. Through the door I politely asked her if I could please purchase two pairs of mens boxer briefs, I would be quick. She said sorry we're closed. I could tell she felt bad but wasn't about to make an executive decision while the owner was in the back turning lights off. I said please, I forgot to pack them for my trip and I just needed two pair... I would be quick and I'd pay with cash. She said sorry, the cash register is closed, I can't do anything. I tried negotiating with her but she continued to tell me no. This went on for a few minutes. I was shocked that a paying customer with cash, at a high priced store was being turned away. Then the owner approached the door and he could see what was going on. In a frustrated and defeated manner, he opened the door and rudely said "Hurry up." Surprised by his rude tone, I grabbed two pairs of boxer briefs within 30 seconds and he quickly rang them up. Shocked at the price of $55.00, I tried paying with credit card... he sharply replied, "No, you said you were paying with cash!" So, I put my credit card away and paid with cash. I mentioned how I'm a paying customer and was surprised that they'd want to turn business away. He said "We'll since I let you in why don't you write a good review on Yelp." I said I would and had he not let me in, I was going to write a negative Yelp Review. He said "I don't care." What a jerk. That night I tried on the boxer briefs and damn it, they were too big. This means I'd have to go back and face this rude guy to exchange them! On top of it, he gave me no receipt, so I was preparing to him to tell me they wouldn't exchange them... I get to the store and a meek employee is straightening jackets. I tell her, "I was here last night at closing and bought these from the owner and need to exchange them." She timidly points to the back of the store and said, you need to talk to the owner. He comes out from the back looking at me with disgust and says, "What do you need?" As I tell him that I need to exchange these because I bought the wrong size, I put my hand out to shake his, as gentlemen do... He rudely ignores my hand and says "I'm not surprised!" WHAT AN ABSOLUTE JERK. This guy takes the prize for being the worst service oriented asshole. Sir, why are you in the customer service business if you lack any of it. I really hope people read Yelp reviews before they turn their hard-earned money over to an over-priced store run by a miserable store owner. read more
