If that isn't enough to tear Ralphi's dad away from the leg lamp for a trip to Cabela's, the chance to get a free 4" x 6" pic with Santa on the second floor should do the trick. Better yet, this Santa won't roughly push the kiddos down a slide after telling them they'll shoot their eyes out! With so many departments like fishing, camping, and toys, along with a huge aquarium in a cave and a gigantic replica of a mountain, you won't get bored shopping here. Minnesnowtans should check out the ActionHeat section, because we don't actually enjoy becoming human popsicles in winter! If you're offended by taxidermy, oh fuuudge...avoid all the North American and African mounts, including a huge elephant and rhino. While I dislike the aspect of the trophy hunting and mounts, kids are mesmerized comparing their tiny size to the large scale of these beautiful beasts and seeing them in their replicated habitats. This store has a little something for everyone, whether you're a Scut Farcus, a Ralphi, or a Mrs. Parker. If driving through Owatonna, make sure to stop at Cabela's--I triple dog dare you! The place to go for any item related to hunting, fishing, camping, and outdoor living. This place is huge! Owatanna's location is one of the more grander Cabela's that I've been to in the Midwest. It was a pretty decent sized building with a decent amount of item variety and a huge taxidermy display right in the middle of it all. I really enjoyed the taxidermy and mount displays at this location. There was a huge diversity of animals from around the world and the quality of the displays was on the same level of a natural history museum. Just walking around and looking at everything was a fun time. There is even a walkthrough aquarium that shows off local sports dish species. Staff were friendly and helpful and prices for most items were very reasonable, especially sale items. The only thing missing was one of those penny arcade gun ranges where you shoot things and they move, oh well! read more

Eric working in gun sales was awful to work with. The look he gave me when I asked to buy a shot gun was rude on its own. He was looking me up and down and laughing when I said I wanted one. He then continued to have awful custom service. We were waiting forever for him to approve us and we sat there for over an hour waiting for his help. By the end I decided to go elsewhere with my business. Worst gun shopping experience I've had. Luckily the manager was nice and easy to work with. read more

Husband and sons are into hunting and fishing. This place has everything under the sun for such activities. Camping and boating equipment items are available for any sportsman. Lots of taxidermy displays that may not be everyone's cup of tea. Great aquarium for kids to be entertained. read more

The first time you enter this store you can't help but be taken by the spectacle of it all. It's like a cathedral for hunting, fishing, and outdoor fans. The walls are lined with taxidermy mounts and replicas of animals from all over the world. They have a large aquarium containing regional fish species. Near the back of the store, two wide stairs to the upper level are separated by a mountain with even more animal mounts on it. The entire center portion of the store is dedicated to outdoor and casual clothing, and they do have a large selection. My only complaint is that everything is split up into collections. You can't go to one spot to see all the winter coats. you have to move from the Under Armour collection, to the Columbia collection, to RedHead, etc. At the top of the stairs is camping, gifts, and the café; The café is cafeteria style; If you order something hot like a burger, they bring it out to you; They have some exotic options like bison, elk, and ostrich, but the flavor doesn't justify the high price. Avoid the temptation to try the bison burger. Bison meat is very lean and this burger is dry, dry, dry as hell. The store is very understaffed, but if you can find an employee to help you, they are top-notch. Very friendly and they know the products. I can't even guess how many times I've been here over the years, so for me the magic has worn off, but it's still a must stop if you've never been here, even you don't plan to shop. Warning: If taxidermy is a trigger issue for you, you are best skipping this place altogether. If you like to hunt, fish, camp or otherwise shed the bonds of 21st century civilization, this is the place for you. This location dwarfs the ones in the twin cities and is mindbogglingly big. It is so roomy that there are whole scenes of stuffed critters in the back section. If you are not here to gawk at the macabre sight of still animals, there is a vast assortment of clothing, equipment, and firearms. There is a cafe upstairs if you feel a bit famished. There is also a bargain cave where they liquidated some of their stock. Selection here is second to none. I have my eye on an 80L dehydrator. You never know when you might want to dry an elephant. read more

it's a hunting fishing heaven love it there

Although I'm not much of an outdoor sports (e.g., hunting and fishing) person, I have enjoyed stopping in to these Cabela's mega-stores since I first visited the mother ship off I-80 in Sidney Nebraska. And after driving for hours through the Cornhusker State, this was great entertainment, especially with the stuffed game and other huge displays of almost anything in this genre that you could think of. The Cabela's of Owatanna provides a nice rest stop between my occasional drives between the Twin Cities and Ames. The restaurant in the store is pretty decent or there are several businesses that have grown up around this destination location to stop and relax. Like anything else, if you look carefully, there's good quality for the price here. Cabela's also has an extensive catalog operation and their "Cave" section offers many excellent bargains. One of my favourite 3-season jackets comes from here. And in hindsight, I should have picked up some snow boots this time around..... read more

Wow! A while back, my friend and I stopped at Cabela's on the way to the Twin Cities after surviving a nasty storm out on the highway. WE MADE IT TO CABELA'S! YESSS! As we stepped inside this 150,000 square foot Cabela's, we were both very impressed with the massive selection of outdoor gear & supplies including apparel, camping, fishing, hunting, boating, home goods, electronics, and much more. It's similar to Bass Pro Shops, LL Bean, and the camping section of Dick's Sporting Goods, all in one place. Cabela's is a major tourist attraction for the outdoors enthusiast located off major highways throughout the country. Cabela's brochures can be found at many places including tourist info centers and at hotels. This large superstore is decorated with large animal displays and aquariums, recreating the wild natural habitats. This is a great store for everyone. They have a great variety of hunting gear, fishing gear, and other outdoor items - including clothes. The store is layed out well - everything is easy to find. There's a taxidermy collection here with animals from all over the world, from leopards to Polar bears. (The kids think it's pretty cool... so do the adults ;) ). There's also a small aquarium in the fishing section. There is a small cafeteria and a fudge shop on the upper level. I personally like to shop at Bass Pro Shop but we were on our way through Minneapolis and stop here before we headed to the cabin. It certainly is smaller than Bass Pro and I don't think they offer nearly as much stuff but we were able to find everything we needed quickly. The parking was full of people who had their boats so space was limited to park. read more

Great place to entertain kids or guys like me who love to hunt. The customer service here is excellent. I picked out a jacket but there wasn't one on the rack in my size. The sales girl got on her cell and checked with someone and told me to stop back in a few minutes and she would have one. I was a bit skeptical but sure enough, 20 minutes later she appeared with the jacket. Cabellas isn't the cheapest spring goods store around but they have great quality and selection. Then there's the atmosphere, life sized animals everywhere, even a mountain in the middle of the store. Everything camo here. read more

I went to the Owatonna Cabela's today looking to spend a few thousand dollars on a over/under trap gun. I spent 20+ minutes in the gun room looking at what they had in the glass cases. The fellow working there barely looked up from his laptop and didn't even acknowledge my presence let alone ask if he could help me. His apathy sealed the deal for me. This was once one of my favorite Cabela's, but I doubt I'll make the long drive there after the experience today. read more

I will never ever go back here. I have never in my life been treated so rudely and poorly. As soon as I walked in the door- looking like a normal person, mind you- I smiled at the greeter. He looked at me with a face of disgust. What an *******. I SMILED AT HIM. ISN'T THAT HIS JOB??? The cold shoulders and dirty looks continued inside. No one said "HI" "may I help you?" NOTHING. The entire staff except for one person was rude. I do believe it is b/c we are not hunters. We were there to buy winter clothes. Everyone there was dressed in flannel except for us. We are a young family- not a bunch of teens or anything. There was absolutely no reason for them to be so cold. I will never give this place my money. Not to mention it was insanely over priced. Went in to buy an AR-15 and they took over an hour to get to me at the sales counter. When they finally got to helping me I picked out the gun I wanted, the sight I wanted and went through all the paperwork. They then started to run my background, which is clean as I have my conceal and carry. They told me I was put on the delayed list which was over a week already. The day they said I was put on the delayed list that I would get a call the next day to go pick up my firearm. Like I said it's been over a week and I haven't heard anything. I got my first pistol faster than I am getting a rifle. read more

We use to love this store! We are big hunters and enjoy the outdoors! We always Make a point to drive from a distance to spend a fare amount! We were visiting today to find a pellet gun for my son! Also, we were hoping to buy a new Browning for my husband! We Waited at the gun counter for about 20 minutes, no one even said we will be with you! After that we Gave up and went to look at pellet guns! We Needed to see if our son could cock the gun! We waited at two more counters to finally be sent to the optics counter who reluctantly helped us! We could have just purchased it on line, but we were hoping to take our sone for the experience of touching and holding the guns to pick it out for him self! This was such a disappointing experience! I'm a Cabela's junkie. I started shopping at Cabela's via mail order back in the 1970's before Al Gore invented the internet and back when Cabela's had only one store in Sydney, Nebraska. Cabela's has always carried top quality outdoor gear and offered excellent customer service. I have visited Cabela's in many different locations and the one in Owatonna is one of my favorites. You can easily spend a half- day here. There is a large aquarium stocked with freshwater fish. I really like the mountain in the center of the store which is stocked with full life size mounts of many species of North American game animals. Cabela's specializes in hunting and camping gear. The selection and the quality of the gear is better than Bass Pro Shops. Bass Pro Shops, on the other hand, is a better place for fishing and boat gear, as well as fishing boats and motors. Non hunters/non fishermen will find lots of outdoor and hiking gear to peruse through. Great selection of boots, hiking shoes, rain pants and jackets, etc. The Owatonna location has a restaurant on the second floor where you can get grill items such as beef, elk, and bison burgers, walleye fingers, bison brats, sweet potato fries, batter dipped onion rings. The food is very good. This is paradise for the avid outdoorsman/woman. read more
