I bought my first handgun today at 25--a M&P 9 Shield EZ. While I was excited about this milestone, the experience left me a bit uneasy. The customer service wasn't great. The salesperson wasn't very helpful or forthcoming with information. Another customer even commented that, as a man, I should already know what I wanted when I came in, which added to the pressure. The person behind the counter chuckled at that comment but didn't step in to offer support or guidance, which was disappointing for a first-time buyer like me. Despite all this, they followed protocol, did the background check, and everything went smoothly on that front. But the expectation that I should already be knowledgeable just didn't sit right with me. It made me feel like I wasn't in the right place. read more

Whether you're hunting, fishing, camping, or just browsing, it's perfectly suited for the job at hand. I love the gun library, the impressive animal sculptures on the indoor mountain, and the well-stocked camping and fishing sections. The animal walk-thru is top notch as well. The selection of gear is excellent too; from shirts for men and women both to footwear for all ages. There's even a section for outdoors gear, which carries knives and hand tools, such as axes, hatchets, and cooking gear over an open flame. I mean, they even carry paintings and other items that work as unique wall art. Cabela's is more than just a store; it's a full outdoor experience that makes every visit enjoyable. read more

By no means am I part of the Yee Yee crowd that is in to huntin', fishin' and trappin' but I can tell you that I paid $9 for some sunscreen at Target last week and yesterday this store in the camping section had the same stuff for $14. Just like some of their camping chairs are easily 20%-30% overpriced compared to highly rated comparable products from other stores online. For me, it's a good place to see item X in the flesh and get a solid look at it but more than likely buy it somewhere else if the price here isn't competitive, i.e. yesterday I looked at some club chairs. The price and selection weren't great, so I bought them from Camping World for much less. Look, this chain isn't what it once was. 10-15 years ago, the store was basically mobbed year-round. Maybe I come here three or four times a year on a weekday, as in yesterday, and now it's basically deserted. I get why they needed Bass Pro Shop to come in and save them. I have came to this location multiple times to buy a firearm. Over the course of the three times that I came to this Hamburg location, I have waited a minimum of 3 hours and this last time pushing 6 hours. After asking questions over the course of these three times I have gotten clarification: Step one wait in line to look at, select or pick up an online order. Step two Fill out the online background check application. Step three Wait your turn in line, for them to get to your firearm. ******Now this is where I want to bring clarification to their process -you filled out the background check, using the computer. -Cabela's does not submit the background check until they get to your gun, in the physical line. -At this point your probably been in line for anywhere from 45 minutes (at the least) to about 2-3 hours or even more. Step four They file the background check which takes on a good day about 15 minutes. *** during this time, is where all the wasted time is spent. It seems that the person at the counter is waiting by the computer to see if you get approved, if you do great! But you could be put into pending, if your put into pending then they put your firearm and paperwork on the back shelf, and move onto another customer. Then after they finish with their next customer a Cabela's worker will check to see if any of the pending people are approved, and grab that persons firearm and paper work and finally move to the next step. Step five You sign your name to their computer as well as sign their safety waver with 3 questions and get a "double double" a coworker checking the information that was entered on the screen. Normally about 10-15 minutes Step six They put your gun back on the other side of the counter. At this point you think your in the home stretch, wrong. There is typically one or two people checking over all the paperwork on average this takes about 10 minutes per gun in line. So if you see 6 other firearms figure you have about 30 minutes to 1 hour before you can finally get checked out. Step seven You pay and finally you get to leave Now I'd like to give my criticisms 1- there is not enough chairs. *****you often see people leaning on the skids of products and display racks. Elderly people not having any availability of seats. If you were lucky enough to get a seat, when you get called up to the desk your most likely loose your seat. 2. You can be here for hours and I mean hours I was here for 6 hours today. they do not supply water, or have vending machines with snacks, or even a simple water fountain and the bathroom is in the front of the store, combined with the lack clarification as to their whole process. You think it'll just be a little longer and try and hold it. Along with the fear that if you leave to go in search of something or the bathroom you'll be called and loose your place in line. 3. There is no explanation of the process. You are lead to believe that the wait time is because of the background check. But the main wait is waiting your turn in line to get to the back ground check. **** there has to be a more streamlined way. 4. Their should be a screen letting you know your place in line, as well as the status of your background check, and an estimated time. So that you can go and browse the store, find refreshments and use the bathroom. 5. The counter people not calling names Loud enough. ****I've been through this process a decent amount of time and have hours of people waiting. Some time the workers will look at the ID and see the person and keep calling the name to soft and then stand there and get irritated. read more

I was looking at a used shotgun on the racks out on the floor. I picked it up and was checking the barrel screw, an older gray hair gentleman yelled, please don't take that gun apart in a very rude voice. He didn't come over and offer help, he just walked back into the gun library. I was going to buy the shotgun, but after that experience, I walked out. I will never buy another gun there again. Not for everything, but you can save money at Dicks Sporting Goods for camping and fishing gear. The prices here are quite higher than I hoped. On hunting and shooting, at least they have that, but I usually purchase my firearms at gun shows. The costs here shocked me. Nice employees. I must acknowledge they "know their stuff." There was a worker at the club card stand and she was insanely disrespectful. My family were ready to check out and the employee rudely pointed us toward the checkout line, while they were walking away I stood back and heard the women say "I don't even know why they were standing there, I wasn't even gonna ask to help them." and her coworker agreed and replied with "Yup, we don't ask here." and they both started laughing. Went in for a shotgun. Their system is to sign in. Your name goes on a screen in the order you sign in. I was # 4. Not bad. However there is only one employee working pistol, rifle, shotgun. Approx 40 minutes into my wait a second employee arrives. Meanwhile, there are numerous employees literally standing around talking with each other as they are not permitted to handle weapons. These are not simple purchases and customers usually want to see several weapons with numerous question before they lay out hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Their web site said the weapon I was interested in was in stock. That was correct, but it was the floor sample at no reduced price. Almost one hour later I leave. Did not purchase the gun. The list now has 14 names !! Employee I dealt with was very knowledgeable and patient. Allow yourself minimum of an hour. This was by no description a busy day. Very hard to pay credit card bill as it is capital one, where you have have to set up an account with them to make arrangements to pay bill. Easier to buy products on line. By far the largest store I've ever visited for outdoor gear. I came here to look for something in particular and unfortunately they didn't have it as there seems to be a run on powders and primers. Growing up my neighbor was a huge outdoorsman. Fishing, camping, hiking, and especially hunting. Every year he'd go on a hunting trip in Pennsylvania and return with grand stories of deer, ducks, and this place called Cabela's! Oh the grandeur!! The quality, the deals! An outdoorsman's paradise! The place is enormous! It's clean and roomy. And they have everything you could imagine. Fishing, hunting, guns, clothing, they got it all. And it's like everywhere else, you gotta look but there are deals to be found. I looked around for the bargain bin I'd heard so much about. I guess it's gone. No clearance items either. Most of the store was full blown retail except for some sale items. I got my son some sweet hunting boots for 90 bucks. Really nice. Other decent deals were around as well. And decent quality stuff as well. Check out the pictures! They have enormous tanks with giant fish in them and tons of stuffed game animals. It's museum like! Very cool! Cheap is the trend so it isn't surprising that Bass Pro Shops would get rid of the specials. Why be a 10 when your closest competitor is a 3? Still, it's a good store and worth the trip. Cabela's is always a great time and it's also a good way to kill time in rainy summer Saturday's. Since I have a credit card w Cabela's I racked up around 60$ in Cabela's cash- actually it turned out to be 82$. What better thing to buy than fudge?! I treated my daughter to fudge , buy 4 squares get two free!!! She got chocolate coconut and quite a few snickers fudge squares. I decided on 4 caramel praline, one vanilla walnut and the traditional chocolate walnut. Their fudge is delicious! Sooo many flavors. It's fun to check out the displays and the aquarium. I enjoy seeing the bears. They had a great chainsaw set of carved bears for roughly 800$ on sale. 1,500 regularly. read more

My fiance and I decided to look here for her first concealed carry pistol. After waiting on the waiting list we went to the counter and looked for the firearms I wanted her to try. When I asked him to pull out a Sig 365 X Macro (for example) he pointed to pretty much every other pistol but the correct one that I wanted to look at. After not finding one she liked we asked the salesman what he thinks would be a good small frame easy slide pistol. He had NO knowledge on any of the firearms we asked about nor any recommendations because he stated he only knew about 1911's only. I also inquired about a Springfield with a red dot they had online (that they had at the store according to the website), he then proceeded to argue that they don't carry any pistols with red dot equipped from Cabela's yet in front of him were 2 other pistols with red dots. Cabela's hires gun OWNERS but not gun ENTHUSIASTS. I want to be able to talk with someone knowledgeable about different firearms rather than him going "I only know the 1911 cause it's all I carry". If you want a place to have a knowledgeable conversation and get good opinions on firearms PLEASE go to Trop Gun Shop in Elizabethtown PA. I went to look at some weapons and ammo. Ammo was outrageously priced. I asked for help finding ammo instead of the guy walking me to he said oh it's over there halfway down. I said seriously? I kniw your very busy talking to the other staff . But can you actually show me please. He then walked me over to copper disc ammo I said I can't shoot slugs they resemble slugs can they be shot out of my gun . He said oh I don't know! ( Gun shop seriously) he looks it up on his phone and says the Ai says you can I don't know what to tell you. Last Tuesday the store was practically empty. I then went to the counter and inquired about a specific gun . The guy says we don't have any of those used. I asked him to walk out an look. He pointed at the wrong gun I said no that's a different guage. 4 I found. First time I've been there in a spell. I'll never go back after that ignorant and staff that can't 1 identify weapons and 2 can't identify ammo usage. Be smart folks it's a walmart version of what it once was. I wont go back. Went to cabelas today with my friend to pickup fishing gear and a license. Walked the store and there were more employees than customers in the store. It actually was annoying being harassed by people trying to get me to sign up for a vacation club,and a credit card and having to navigate my way around the employees gathering in the aisles blocking them to the point that we had to change direction to avoid running into them.the store was clean and well stocked.when we cashed out the cashier at the customer service counter was more concerned about the conversation she was having with a coworker. When we were leaving something that was in my friends bag set off the alarm. A woman asked us to come back to customer service. I joked that my friend must of put a kayak in his pants and the woman became NASTY and RUDE .I told her to lighten up and she still acted like we had done something wrong. After being embarrassed by the woman,the LOUD alarm it was found that the cashier who was talking to her coworker had forgotten to deactivate the strip in a fishing reel that my friend had purchased. Lastly no apology not even a smile we left. We spent a combined 300 dollars on items that can be found anywhere on line with out being treated like criminals BTW we are both in our 60s not some kids.it is an hour trip to cabelas and I WON'T be going back there again. I would go there 6 times a year and I never leave there without spending at least 200 dollars. I stopped for a break at Cabela's on my way to Pittsburgh coming from New York. The only other Cabela's I have been to is in Oregon and I loved it. This Cabela's was even better. The store is huge and is two levels. They carry everything from camping and fishing gear to guns and ammo to fudge. I went in for some 9mm ammo and some fudge. The fudge is totally amazing there and is worth the trip just for the fudge even if you need nothing else. The staff there is very helpful and friendly and there are many people all around that are more than happy to answer questions and help you. I love Cabela's and will always recommend it to any one who is near by. I only wish it was closer to were I live as I would be a regular there. read more

"Mom, when the Zombie Apocalypse comes, I am barricading myself in here." - NMT, currently binge-watching Z Nation, I, Zombie and The Walking Dead. We've been driving past Cabela's every year on our way to and from camping without stopping. For years we've had friends say "you have to stop here, it's amazing". Um, it's a store? Okay. This year we finally decided to, mostly because we realized we forgot some small gear and should probably buy it before we get to the campground. Getting there is something of an entrance, winding your way up a hill, to where it's grandly displayed. "Oh, boy, Wally World!" exclaimed the Reverend. Parking is ample and they have things like RV dump stations so road warriors will be tempted to come. Upon entry, bathrooms are directly to the left, another smart move for a store perched right at an exit of a main interstate. People don't shop in a leisurely fashion if they have to go to the bathroom. Why some businesses don't get that is beyond me. The place is, in a word, grand. Not so much big as broad, you have the feeling it goes on for acres and acres. They have some serious collections too - the gun area is impressive, as is the fishing area. Camping, on the mezzanine floor, was less impressive and a bit confusing to find things in. It shares the space with a cafeteria style buffet restaurant and the 'home decor' area where you can get all kinds of hunting/fishing/'don't tread on me' decor. There are things to entertain as well - a large "Mountain" with taxidermy wild animals - bears, ram, coyote, etc. perched. A waterfall falls down the center to a small pool that then leads to a koi pond. There's a couple of other displays of taxidermy - I call them "dead zoos", one of deer, bear, etc, another of elephants, giraffe, zebras. There is a pretty cool walk through aquarium too. In other words: things for the kids to do while you shop your heart out. Country music plays and with all the "live free or die" and "don't tread on me" signs and flags and such that someone who is not politically conservative, someone wearing a decidedly progressive-leaning shirt on, such as myself, would feel unwelcome, maybe even threatened. Nope. We are all people, after all, and most of us aren't that extreme. People were friendly, warm, helpful and respectful. Customers AND staff. Prices are on the high side, but then again you're getting all these extras, so I didn't mind that much. We'll stop again, definitely a good spot to stretch your legs and pick up some gear. Definately has gotten worse since Bass Pro Shops took over. They removed a ton of stock. Id even go as far as saying whole departments. Before the acquisition there was a whole clearance section which i thought was cool because you would find something good every once in a while and now thats gone. The food is about the same as i remember. I got the cuban rueben and cheese curds. The cuban reuban is exactly what it sounds like giving you the best of both worlds from both sanwhiches. Grilled marble rye, swiss, kraut, pulled pork, and corned beef. Cant go wrong and you get bbq sauce as the tang which is a nice twist. The curds were a bit overdone and just tasted like breading. The food was ok but the overall experience was not that great compared to previous visits. I understand the business trend for most businesses today is cutting costs but theres a point when your frugalness will cost you customers. I love the old Cabela's and surely miss it. Since the Bass Pro and Cabela's merger the Cabela's in Hamburg looks more and more like a Bass Pro Shops. No more Bargain Cave. Ot as many REAL super deals. And a lot of high-end outfitters clothing as photographed. This store is more like the typical chain store sporting goods stores. Middle income and frugal shoppers may not find this new Cabela's setup very appealing because there's so much high-end clothing and merchandise. It is very hard to find any bargains in general.
