To start off I want to leave a review based on the CH Donuts of yesteryear before the asian guy (I think he was Vietnemese) retired and sold it, because THAT CH Donuts was bomb! He was the only one I knew of in San Diego doing maple bars as eclairs -I'm so sad that I haven't been able to find that anywhere else. Some honorable mentions were the donuts holes, the old fashions, and the crullers. The service was always polite, warm, and familial -this guy knew and remembered his customers, even if not by name. The reason I found out he sold it and retired was because he saw and recognized me walking the pier in IB :D He and his wife were always welcoming, like you were a family member visiting for a snack and a good chat. The place has generous seating available, always clean and never dirty or messy, and is in a prime business lot at the intersection of IB Blvd/Coronado Ave and 13th Street. I've only been back once since the place was sold and I wasn't really into the flavors offered at that time, plus they were no longer offering the maple eclairs. Not sure if they are now, but I'm sure their other donuts are good since they've got good reviews and were in the Reader last year. Go check them out! read more

Wow! I must say that I lost interest in this place when they changed ownership over a year ago. I tried it after the new management and was disappointed that it didn't taste the same. I figured that this place was a lost cause and my favorite doughnut shop was no more. It had been over a year since I last tried them and I'm so pleasantly surprised to say these doughnuts are just as good if not better than what they used to be. It seems the new management worked at the taste and quality issues they may have had when they first took over. The doughnuts are so soft and fresh and just what you would hope for. I stopped by C H Donuts and picked up about a dozen donuts. The place was cute and had a great vintage appeal. They still had Halloween decorations up with a fake skeleton reading the newspaper in the back. There was no line, which was nice. The service was great and they were very helpful in choosing donuts. However, the donuts did not taste as well as I would have hoped. They were not as fluffy or memorable as one would suspect from such a beloved spot in Imperial Beach. Even some of the particular flavors like apple fritters or cinnamon rolls just tasted like a plain glazed donut. Overall, I just wish there was more spark to the flavors. I'll try and stop by another time and hopefully have a better experience but I found it to be mediocre overall. read more

February 10: Sorry to report that these donuts are now the same as other donut shops. Apparently, whatever the original owner did to make great tasting/non-greasy donuts isn't being done by the new owners. Unfortunately, even the health department gave the shop only 92/100. All previous scores were 98. Hopefully, things will be improved by the new owners. However, since today was my second visit since the change in ownership and the new owners are still making donuts differently than the original owner...I doubt that I will return. read more

I drive down from Chula Vista to IB twice a month just to get my hands on these tasty treats. The ownership appears to have changed hands but the high quality of their offerings remain exactly the same. I had a chance to chat it up with the new owner Carlos and was glad to hear that he's committed to maintaining the quality that has made this place the best donut shop in IB for years. I try to get here by 8a because they sell out frequently. The place is clean, well maintained and the staff is very friendly. Donuts were some of the best I've had. I'd make the 35 minute drive to hit them up again.

CH used to be the best donut around, I would bring them to work and everyone would ask where I got them from. Now that they have new owners and new recipes the dough is different, tastes stale and crispy, the chocolate tastes bad. I wish they would've kept the same recipe. Now it's just like any other donut shop. Average at best. Instead of doing the fancy looking donuts they should go back to the basics and focus on the dough maybe use the receipt from the previous owner that everyone loved. read more

I was disappointed. I went in when the new owners were transitioning ownership. They said that they weren't changing anything but adding new items. We used to love going here before. When we got the doughnuts home the only kind of decent one was the maple with bacon on top. Now to the disappointment of our visit. The dough used to be nice and soft and fluffy. When we tried the new owner's method it is sad to say but they no longer have that same taste. Kind of have like a day old kind of hardness. Mind you I was there at 7:30 am picking up a dozen. Next the chocolate on the chocolate doughnuts was extremely disappointing. Like they just barely put any on top of the chocolate bars, twists and classics. Now the worst part. My daughter used to love getting the jelly filled doughnuts from here before. So when she took a bit of it she was like where is the filling. She had to eat almost half it before she got to the little dollop of filling they put in. Before they used to be filled to the point when it was coming out. I don't know if this was just a bad day or if this is the new norm for the new ownership. Figure I'll give it a year till I go back to try again. read more

Best donuts! They are always fresh and so good! I go about twice a month and always get 1-2 dozens. One for my family and 1 for work. The owner is so nice and friendly. He even says he makes them fresh every day and you can definitely tell when u try them donuts. I do have to drive about 10-15min but it's worth the trip. read more

Brought a dozen to work in advance of National Donut Day on Sunday, 11/5/23. Here are some comments: That Apple Fritter was on FIRE! The Glazed Twisted was one of the best donuts I've ever had! I loved the Maple Bar, so good! The Chocolate filled Croissant was like having dessert for breakfast! And the Bacon Maple Bar has real bacon and gone in 4 bites! The sign says they close at 1pm, but they typically sell out before noon, so get there early. read more

We absolutely love going to CH Donuts. Every so often we come here on our way to school and my daughter dies for the donut holes!! All the donuts are fresh and so yummy! The owner is the nicest and has the best customer service! It's always nice to sit down and eat your donuts with coffee in the shop. He's been in IB for years. We were staying in the RV park at Silver Strand. We all got up early for a walk on the beach and friend's kids were begging me to get donuts for breakfast. So we got in my car and proceeded to donut hunt :) It made more sense to head towards Imperial Beach from Silver Strand (vs driving the other way to Coronado). The firsts donut shop was shut down so we weren't sure where to go. Thankfully Yelp led us to CH Donuts. There's plenty of parking in this tiny strip mall. You can tell it's a family run donut shop which I appreciated. It's a bit muggy and warm inside the shop but there are a few fans running. A dozen donuts is about $11 (excluding a few donuts). We opted for 6 donuts, 2 coffees, and 2 hot cocoas. It was about $14 after tax I think. The boy ordered three chocolate ganache donuts (long, twist, round) while the little girl ordered coconut, an old fashioned, and a cinnamon crumb. She LOVED the old fashioned. The little boy LOVED the chocolate ones. And the adults LOVED LOVED LOVED the cinnamon crumble. The dough was so yeasty and so pillow-y soft. The crumbs tasted perfectly sweet and delicious. I dare say this was one of the best donuts I've ever had. Also, their regular coffee was GOOD. Like, I could drink-it-black-without-sugar/cream GOOD. Service was ok. SoOo, a box of their donuts found its way to our breakroom (a coworker brought them).. The donuts came piled in a large white cardboard box. All the donuts seemed a bit bigger than an average donut. Nothing fancy or hipster, just your classics... I tried their bar/twist with chocolate frosting. Omg... So moist.. So buttery.. So light and airy.. So sweet.. I also tried their glazed old fashion. I already love the texture of an old fashion donut.. And theirs are so yummy. Actually the glaze is super sweet... Super duper sweet... The little piece I tried was more than enough. But the donut itself is so moist and flavorful. So yea, I had a taste of 2 donuts.. Sweet tooth craving fulfilled! The bar was light and even though it's pretty big, it's easy to finish a whole one without any guilt. The old fashion is a bit more dense and was definitely much more sweeter. I came to CH doughnuts to get half a dozen for me and a few coworkers. This place is the best doughnut shop in Imperial Beach. Imperial Beach is a small city and there aren't many doughnut shops in IB. This rates high over any other doughnut shop in IB! As I walked in, I was second in line. After the guy in front of me was done, I was greeted by the nice Asian guy working the front. I got 6 doughnuts but I think he hooked me up with an extra doughnut. These doughnuts tasted fresh. My favorite was the cream filled chocolate glazed doughnut. So yummy! I also got a small coffee to go. Total costs me $9.10. Not bad. They charge per doughnut and not by how many you get. The quality of these doughnuts are excellent. The owners are Asian and very nice. There's seating inside. The colors are bright inside. I would definitely go here if I wanted doughnuts.
