Before leaving Dover, last Tuesday December 2, happen to discover Bylers that came highly recommended by other fellow Yelpers. Bylers, even though a not far drive from my hotel was scenic, and learned something new that Dover, DE had Amish. Bylers a win and an amazing find, half Amish store, home furshings, and discount grocery store, deli, some prices well below regular store prices. Service and ambience were welcoming, friendly. Tonight's dinner discussion centered on Byler's snack aisle. Not the aisles of bulk goods or the store made bakery items, but of the aisles far on the other end of the store. The ones with everything being sold at insanely low prices but in boxes that might have sat just a bit funny on the shelves. Byler's, the scratch-and-dent store for snack foods. Here was the conversation, in all of it's glory- Me- "Honey, look at this website, it features reviews of junk food I've never seen! It's all special edition flavors and stuff." Wendall- "Ew, why would anyone make cheesesteak flavored potato chips? Or waffle flavored Pop Tarts? Or Flaming hot Mountain Dew? Why? Just why" My mom, who misses Byler's very much- "They make them so that people will have something to buy at Byler's in six months!" Wendall- "I never bought them. I walked on by, and then turned around and someone had put them in my cart!" Me- "Of course I put them in the cart! How else would we get to try all of the weird flavors?" Mom- "I really miss Byler's" ~End Scene~ Byler's is so many things. It's an Amish market that sells the best local scrapple (Haas) and baked goods. It's a gift shop and a specialty kitchen gadget store. It's an outlet for pellet stoves and playgrounds. And it's a grocery overstock outlet that should not be missed. Don't buy too many of any item, as the "best buy" date is probably close, but know that you'll find some amazing things at unbeatable prices. You might never see that particular item ever again, but you'll find something else hopefully just as interesting the next time you visit. We've moved away from Dover, and are still looking for a similar fun spot in our new neighborhood. For now we just have to remember the days of spotting an unheard of item in the snack aisle. read more

Great local store with produce, deli, canned and frozen items. They have a fantastic home section with reasonable prices.

I checked out this place a couple of weeks ago because everybody at work was talking about it. We are new to the area so I'm always looking for new places to explore. What a wonderful little place. All the shelves were stocked, everything was clean and organized and you can see the pride that everyone takes. There are so many fun little trinkets to look at for the kitchen or the home or candles. I could get in trouble with all of the things I 'need' there. I also appreciated that I could get items in bulk or I can get them in smaller quantities. Such a cute little store. read more

The prices are always good and it's like a little treasure hunt bc you don't know what cool stuff you are going to find. And the best part is they now SERVE COFFEE, ice cream, and fresh bakery items. I love to be able to go to a local place for coffee, and it is really well made! They do coffee, lattes, tea, espresso, and other hot drinks. The lavender latte is my particular favorite. read more

Went out to Byler's today was craving one of their Ham & Cheese subs, should stopped at Wawa instead. I asked to have lettuce. tomato, onion, salt, pepper and oregano with hot peppers on the side. Had to ask for hot peppers and when I got home no salt pepper oregano on sandwich. See photo where is the thick ham and cheese slices Byler's is famous for? I haven't been out there in a while. Wasn't worth the drive out there or $5.99 price. read more

This is an institution in Delaware below the canal (aka Lower Slower.) The shop was probaby originally a convenience for the local Amish population that surrounds the west Dover area. This store serves the need for dried goods and foods at a good price for large families. What Bylers stocks are dry goods (soup stocks, beans, rice, noodles and pasta, prepared mixes, spices, sugar, flour, meal, grains) and they have a deli section, a sort of off-price grocery (where you might find cereal or tomato sauce at low low prices but not the same thing every week.) I found Cracker Barrel cheese (not my favorite kind of Cracker Barrel--it was baby swiss, but cheese nonetheless) for 2 bucks a brick. And a very decent canned pizza sauce from San Marzano tomatoes. In fact, the pizza sauce was excellent. There is also a frozen section as well as a cute housewares/decorative store and they sell wood stoves and grills if I remember correctly. The spices come in plastic tubs. There are all kinds, the ones the local grocery never carries (cream of tartar, mace) and at prices far lower than the confiscatory price of those little red-topped jars. However, not all of them are great--the cinnamon is apparently coated with cinnamon extract (artificial) and goes off quickly. I get my cinnamon mail order from Penzeys as a lot of commercial cinnamon these days is ground-up tree bark coated with artificial flavoring. Not Bylers fault--this is an issue with many ingredients these days that have been cheapened to cut cost. Don't buy the cinnamon. But the dried spices like mace and whole allspice, and the herbs (savory, thyme, rosemary) are good and even can be found ground or whole. You need to be careful of the expiration date on some of the foods--the discount is good but if you can't consume mass quantities right away, it may not be a good deal for you. If you bake a lot, this place is a treasure; good flour and sugar, including bags of raw sugar at a good price, not the teensy bags at ridiculous prices you find elsewhere (I prefer raw sugar in baking, if possible.) This place is hopping on the weekends--families in Dover who need to watch the pennies and who are willing to seek out bargains know Bylers and are regulars. The parking lot is large and easy to navigate. There is a second, new location in Harrington off Rte 13, but I haven't been inside. read more

This store was a complete zoo when I visited during a customer appreciation event. Parking lot was packed with people waiting for parking. I felt sorry for the horses that were "parked" there by the Mennonite customers. It was over 90 degrees in the lot with tons of cars and the horse had no shade. As far as the store, it has a lot of items for sale many from the Mennonites of the Northern States. I picked up some bakery items that were a good price and proved to be yummy. I also got chips, and vegetables at a great price. There is an ice cream stand with ice cream scoops at a dollar each! It is a fun store but it was too crazy when I was there! My only complaint was the deli meat. I ordered a roast beef sandwich and the meat that they put in there was horrible quality beef. I would never buy their roast beef again. See photo I uploaded. The roll and provolone cheese along with lettuce and tomato were fine but the meat was disgusting. One star sandwich because of the meat. No fan of the sandwich but the store I like! read more

I like this place, they've got a big area in the parking lot which has a lot of structures like slides and swings you can buy if you're setting up a park for kids, or just want your own personal sandbox with toys in your back yard. The food items and spices are super cheap, they've got a lot of home made items for sale. If I lived closed by, I'd probably come here often. read more

The location of this hidden is definitely a bit out of the way but worth the explore. For one thing, it'll get you out to the farms bordering "downtown" Dover, which are pretty scenic in their own right. Second, the store houses an ice cream counter which seems to be the highlight of everyone's visit. They have a nice spread of adirondack chairs outside and a few picnic benches inside the lobby for people to sit and enjoy their goodies at after a shopping binge. As for the grocery itself, I haven't gotten anything from the deli or hot food section but it's nice to have one. The stove store is also not something I have a need for, but it's there, for all the stove enthusiasts. The rest of the place is split between Amish/local goods like jarred pickles, jams, and dried goods, and typical groceries and canned goods. They have lots of overstocked items so good prices, but not much variety on any single thing, and if you're looking for something in particular you are likely out of luck. You are going to do best for yourself here if you have no preconceptions and just stroll to pick up stuff as you find it. The produce section is surprisingly limited - although there are a few containers of local farm fresh stuff, the clerk at check out didn't know what was what and coded in the imported produce prices. Despite all this, I like the drive out here and the experience upon arrival - theres corners of goodies all over the place and the local and nearby Amish products still have an exotic allure to them. Maybe I'll get bored of it eventually, but I doubt it. read more

I love Byler's because you can't beat their deli meats/cheese selections and fresh meat. What was the best was that when the pandemic started and everywhere was out of eggs, milk, potatoes etc, Byler's had these. Of course like most, meat disappeared quickly but I was pleasantly surprised to find them well-stocked with eggs, butter and milk. The employees are great and always helpful. read more

Today July 13, 2019@ approximately 3:45. While waiting at the deli to be served, I had #23, they were on #20. There was the worker from the sub section helping out and the guy with the gages who was very pleasant and fast but it didnt account for the line being as long as it had gotten when there was another worker a heavy set guy who felt it was more important to chat with his friends a male and female he looked over at the customers and noticed the line was gettng longer but continued to chat with his company at which time there was about six other customers who were waiting for service. The guy with the gages glanced over at him but didnt say anything and continued to service the customers. The heavy set employee stood talking to his friends for more than 5 minutes with no regards to the customers until one of the customers got annoyed and asked if he could help out. The employee looked at the customer with a look as though he was annoyed that someone( the customer) said any thing to him. He answered the customer yes but continued with his friends which I felt was very RUDE. After being serviced by the nice gentleman with the gages I proceeded to the front to ask for a manager before paying for our merchandise. The person I spoke to a female at customer service apologized and stated the manager was not in and would be back on Tuesday and gave me his name and number then proceeded to give me 2 tokens for ice cream to make up for his rudeness which I feel was unacceptable. As I was speaking to her another employee came to customer service stating that another customer was complaining about the same employee the heavy set male employee. She said to the other employee do they need me to come to the back he said yes and she stated back to him tell the customer to come to the front to customer service. Which again I felt was not right she should have went to see what was going on. This is the first time I have experienced this type of service and the most disrespectful thing I have experienced at this establishment and hope something will be done about it read more

I want to give this place a FIVE star review, but a part of the reason why some items are so cheap is because the dates have expired. This really bugs me, but there are plenty of non-expired cheap items and certain items (like deli) are available fresh. Other than that, there's just so many delicious homemade and quality items. There are Amish markets in the DC, Baltimore, Annapolis area and Byler's isn't one of them. That is what makes Byler's worth the drive to Dover. Make it a day-trip. The 2-hour-ish drive from the DC beltway is a great way to see some farm country. Head into Dover for some shopping (DE has no sales tax) and on your way back maybe stop by the outlet mall near the 50 split in MD. But the focus of the trip must be a stop at Byler's. Leave plenty of room in your trunk and tummy. At Byler's you can fill them both. read more

Sometimes we use Byler's as an excuse to drive to Delaware in the convertible on a nice day. But the truth is, once upon a time I lived just a few miles from the place and I like shopping there. I have my favorite little areas of the store - I really like all the kitchen gadgets and cooking tools, my french fry cutter, compost bin, crab forks, etc all came from this store. Next favorite part of the store is the cheeses, last trip I grabbed a huge chunk of smoked cheddar that I am still whittling away at. The bulk foods isle always gets a run...everything from nonfat dry milk to xanthan gum to bulk yeast at very reasonable prices. Yeah, I know, I've only checked in once, but as I have said in reviews of other places I really like....I am lazy about checking in. I will keep going back; every time I come up with a good excuse and a day to go out and play. read more

If you're ever near Dover, Delaware you need to stop at Byler's. You'll find sacks of pre-packaged spices so inexpensive that you'll think at first that they were mis-priced. In addition, you'll find homemade ice cream, hand-crafted wood carvings, handmade quilts, jellies, and a charming selection of Delaware-themed souvenirs. You'll also find regional food items such as scrapple in the deli section. Also, don't be surprised to see a horse-drawn buggy or two in the parking lot as this store is frequented by Dover's Amish and Mennonite communities. read more
