My experience with Oregon Roof Guys was not a good one. I should have been wary when the owner, Neil Box, showed up unannounced at my door.( Another man, Jesse, who was scheduled to do an estimate on my roof had been a "no show" two days prior.) I impressed on Neil that it was very important for me to have a quality job done because I was likely to sell my house in two years and people notice the quality of a job. He told me all of their jobs were done well and then he went up on my roof.
The roofing job came and went. Jesse assured me that they had done a great job. When the injury to my leg healed, I went up on the roof to check for myself. Climbing the ladder, I saw a big goober of tape on the flashing. Next, I saw the roof. There were a couple of bad patches and bubbling on what was to be a flat roof. I immediately sent an email to Neil. I got no response.
Two weeks later I sent a letter addressed to Neil at the company address stating the problems and asking him to contact me. Nothing. I then sent another email referring to the letter. I got a call. Neil tried to brush me off saying that he was sure his guys did a good job. We finally settled on a time for him to come over and see the roof. By this time my neighbors had commented on the quality of the roof job. My immediate neighbor had her flat roof done by another company and it looked absolutely beautiful! I was embarrassed when the contractor on her job told me what a poor job was done on my roof.
Neil showed for the appointment - late. I told him that he had promised me a quality job and that I certainly did not get one. He proceeded to tell me that the job was fine and then pointed out mistakes on my shingled roof (thus, proving my point that people notice). Here are some of Neil's comments:
"It's roofing. It's not granite countertops."
I could have 3 of those (meaning patches) on there and it would be okay on this size roof." (My roof is not that large. My neighbor's roof was larger by far and she had no patches, no bubbles, tidy flashing tape and paid less.)
"Your idea of quality if different than mine."
"I'll put a bigger patch on it."
Actually, that's exactly what he had his worker do about 2 weeks later. The man working on the job seemed embarrassed by the work that had been done. He brought the roof job quality from a 3 to a 6 (out of a 10). These are just the facts. I would say shop around. Maybe ask someone in the building trades for a few references. Be diligent.
