The BEST french toast I've ever had in my life, lives at Buvette! This place is super small, but functional and aesthetically pleasing. Gives off that French cafe vibe perfectly. Our server was also super accommodating and friendly and patient with all of our questions and requests. The eats and drinks: Orange juice - 5/5. Amazing, fresh and sweet! Had some pulp as well. You could tell it was freshly squeezed. Dare I say better than the juice you get at Apollo Bagels. French toast: 6/5. Yes, it's better than 5 stars. I could eat 10 of these in one sitting. Perfectly cooked, right amount of creme anglaise (it looks like too much on the plate, but trust me it's perfect), and the fresh berries are the perfect complement. Three stars or four - I went back and forth with this review. I had been to Buvette many years ago; and came to the same conclusion. I had the signature Croque Monsieur both times, and both sandwiches fell short of expectations. I can't exactly remember why it wasn't that good years ago, but yesterday's sandwich had the smallest, thinnest slice of ham I've ever seen - in fact part of the sandwich had no ham due to the slice being so thin! Typically, Croque Monsieur sandwiches have a large amount of ham - not Buvette - it's all cheese and Bechamel sauce. Ironically, the sandwich tasted delicious - but it was really a very tasty grilled cheese sandwich. Next up the Belgian Waffle. The waffle was fluffy and light and had a very good taste. I usually ask for any toppings to my waffle to be 'on the side', as they sometimes overwhelm the waffle. I forgot to on this occasion - and the crème fraiche and berries, with the sauce, made much of the waffle soggy. It was still very tasty but I didn't finish as it was too mushy. Fifteen years in and Buvette still does the thing. Jody Williams built this room before the whole tiny-Paris-café genre got run into the ground, and it remains the best version of it, now with outposts in Tokyo, Seoul, and as of this year London. Order the steamed eggs. They cook them with the espresso machine's steam wand, which is why the texture is like nothing you make at home. Get them with prosciutto, add the croque madame, done. The coq au vin at night is legit but arrives in a crock the size of your fist for real money. Everything here is small: the plates, the tables, the pours. Decide if you're okay with that before you sit down. Fun fact for the old heads: this address was the Pink Tea Cup for decades. Smothered pork chops to tartinettes, that's the Village in one storefront. Logistics matter. No reservations, ever, and with the street shed gone the room got even tighter. Weekend brunch line runs an hour plus, which is insane when Via Carota (same owners, Williams and Rita Sodi) is a block away. Go weekday at 8am instead, grab the marble bar, and it's one of the calmest breakfasts in Manhattan. Four stars, not five, because the portion-to-price math stings and weekends are a scrum. But weekday morning Buvette, eggs and a proper café au lait on Grove Street? Nobody in this city does it better. read more

Buvette was able to accommodate me for an early dinner shortly after my arrival in New York, specifically the West Village. Buvette is one of five W. Village eateries helmed by power-chef duo Jody Williams and Rita Sodi; four are within a block of each other. I passed the other three (Bar Pisellino, Via Carota, I Sodi) on my way and all had lines out the door. Carota and Sodi are Italian, Buvette is French. There are 2 other Buvettes in Asia and one coming soon in London. Buvette does not do reservations. Buvette is a charming but tiny/cramped space, made more tiny within the last year by NYC's removal of pandemic-era street patios which greatly helped dining capacity. Buvette may sometimes have a few front sidewalk tables, and there's a tiny outdoor patio in the back. The tables and dishware are also tiny. There's a kitchen in the back, but some food is also prepared below the bar in front, where there seem to be some ovens. The food seems reliably consistent here. The menu is short but there are daily specials. I ordered a non-alcoholic ginger soda, crab tartine (a special), lobster a l'Americaine (lobster pot pie) and frites. The soda is always on the menu and is refreshing, with a nice snap of ginger. The crab tartine was fab, a fresh crab salad with avocado atop toast. The lobster pot pie was made in the under-bar oven, a small serving of lobster and veggies with a golden puff pastry topper. Delish. The frites were nicely crisp, served with an aioli. We just went there on a rainy September lunchtime. There's a little bit of a line outside which went fast. I had two glasses of cremate rose, waffles, and the most delicious French soft scrambled eggs on top of delicious French bread, with sun-dried seasonal tomatoes. Absolutely divine. We start talking to the table next to us we had the most wonderful conversation. What a beautiful atmosphere, and would love to go back every single weekend. A tiny bit of Paris in New York City. My friend and I came here a few weekends ago for brunch. We knew that they didn't take reservations and we would likely be waiting in line. Thankfully, we didn't have to wait too long as we were asked if we would be willing to sit in their back patio, and we said yes, which absolutely paid off (as most people wanted to sit inside as it was still a little chilly). The ambiance is very cute, albeit the space itself is tiny, so keep that in mind, and tables are very close together, especially inside the restaurant. The line for this spot was super long! They pull you based on how many are in a group. Smaller groups will get called faster so parties of one - two. We only waited at buvettes for 5 minutes. Super tiny spot, they had a small outdoor seating area. Be prepared to get really comfortable with your neighbors, you'll be arm to arm or back to back Initially we were seated at the bar but I was literally touching the person next to me. I couldn't move so I asked to sit in the seats next to the bar... those seats were worse. Every person walking by brushes up on you and the table is smaller. Portions were VERY SMALL for the price so I was disappointed by that. I was hoping for a portion larger than small Plates or saucers for tea. Buvette is a charming French spot, that I have been to a few times over the years. The ambiance, service, and food is always great. I was able to walk in on a weekday for brunch, however I know on the weekends there's typically a line. I ordered the Pain Perdu and a hot chocolate. In the past, I have gotten the waffle (which I love) but decided to venture out. Overall, the food was really well done. I think I prefer the waffle since it is less sweet, but you really can't go wrong. I would recommend trying Buvette for breakfast or brunch if you can! read more

FINALLY after years and years of this place being on my list I got the chance to go over labor day weekend recently. It was delicious, and I can see why they've held their own in the brunch scene of NYC for so long. First, I was impressed by their cafe miel which is a cappuccino/latte of sorts with honey. I am very skeptical of French coffee when they make espresso-based drinks, as I've been burned many times in France by bad coffee. This was excellent - smooth and integrated texture, and not too sweet despite the honey, honoring the excellent quality of both the honey and the coffee. The croque monsieur was delicious as well - you know you have to get it when you get French brunch. The bread was a nice texture, everything was married together nicely and it was nice and savory, though not as impressive as the french toast and chocolate almond croissant. French toast with berries was DELICIOUS. I mean that brioche was soooooo light and fluffy, savory and sweet and such a dream. It was the star of the show. I saw this place on instagram while looking for breakfast spots in the city and I'm really glad i stopped by their breakfast is so delicious! Food: Waffle sandwich [5/5]: One of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had in greenwich. The Belgian waffle is so delicious, soft, and sweet. The cheese pull on the sandwich was unexpected and so good, the bacon was so sweet and savory and to top it all off the running egg was just a chefs kiss. This sandwich is a must have. Inside is so cramped you're bumping backs with people and the store is very busy as well so there will definitely be a crowd when you go. We waited two minutes for a seat and decided we'd rather sit outside to avoid being on top of people which is one hundred percent the better option. Service [5/5]: The staff was friendly, and they checked up on us. The food came pretty quick despite them being ridiculously busy. There isn't much to say really about the service it was quick, friendly, and efficient. Didn't ask for my server's name, but she's got short, curly brunette hair and she made such good recommendations and was just a joy. Manager, if you see this, please send her my compliments! They have an extensive list of non-alcoholic drinks (just ask your server. I will be back to try the NA margarita). I tried the watermelon lemonde. It's sparkling - which kinda gives the illusion of ferment - but it's sweet and refreshing. The lemon part of the drink isn't super pronounced (it's there, you just have to look for it) but honestly, I'm not mad at it. It's genuinely a very tasty drink and I couldn't recommend it more. I have this place on my list of favorite French fries in the city, and I'm happy to know it still is. If you like a 'limpier' fry - kind of like the ones from five guys - this is a great option. I tried one of their specials; the poulet roti - very simple flavors but very well roasted and juicy. This meal was so filling, but I can never say no to a sweet treat so I had their famous chocolate mousse. Perfection. Pure perfection. We had a lovely Saturday brunch at Buvette, a charming little French spot. It was busy around 11 AM, and we waited about 40 minutes, but it was worth it! The helpful staff managing the line checked in often with updates, and the servers were all very attentive. Just a heads up, your whole party needs to be physically present before you can be seated. The space is a bit tight, but the food made up for it. Tiny French restaurant in the West Village and you definitely feel like you are in Europe because the tables are tiny and everything is smooshed together. Areived ~10:45 am on a Saturday for a party of two, and was seated ~11:25 am. The staff was communicative on timing while on line and frequently checked in. You can sometimes get in more quickly if open to bar seating. Pain Perdue: The Brioche bread was spongy and bouncy, and absorbed the crème well for flavorful bites. It was not very sweet, which I was pleasantly surprised by. Not sure I would get this as a standalone item, but it was nice to split. Jambon Cru: The star of the show.
