Pelumi took care of my haircut and styling yesterday morning, and I left feeling refreshed and confident! Before the appt, her replies were quick and she was able to fit me into her schedule. Communication on point the whole time-- she really takes the time to understand what you're looking to do. The space itself is gorgeous, huge, spotless and all of the professional equipment and products you could hope for are on display (including some of my favorite brands like Kerastase and Shu Uemura.) I've been going to Butterfly studio salon for over a decade and have had nothing but a great experience! Yes, the salon is a bit pricy, but it's worth it. Yesterday I had a great haircut by Angie - she had no problem tackling my bushy curly hair and leaving me with beautiful layers and a blow out in record time. From when I walked into the salon to walking out was 45 minutes for a wash, cut and blow dry of my really thick, long curly hair. I can't even blow out my own hair in 45 minutes! I also regularly see Joanna for color who has worked wonders to get me to a nice caramel brunette after I messed up my own hair color at home! Last time I saw her I needed highlights and gray root coverage. She knew I was in a rush, and she managed to do both processes at the same time to get me out of there faster. Meh...Glorified Supercuts. This place was recommended to me but it didn't stand up to expectations. It was an expensive cut with very little attention to detail. Stylist seemed nice but somewhat rushed, didn't go back and make sure it was all blended. I'm very upset that I wasted my time and money. It wasn't technically a bad cut but it certainly was not precise...lazy service. 1 month out and I'm looking for somewhere to tweak it. Waste of money . Listen, it's NYC and, not to be a NY snob, but most high end hair salons are going to do a great color and hair cut. Believe me, Butterfly salon does just that and more (I had to go 10 weeks between cuts of my short, layered bob and it still kept its shape!) This salon cares about you. Of course there is water (flat and sparkling), wine and god knows what else to drink, a nice healthy snack and chocolate for the rest of us and they seem generally happy to see you (from receptionists to assistants to your personal stylists). My personal colorist, Raul the Remarkable, and stylist, Lei the Legendary, really listen to me and take care of me. For example, I have had a crap year so far, mother died, organizing her Celebration of Life and having a knee replaced, all before May. When they saw my cane and knee issue, they were so kind and gave me a nice deep conditioner on my hair to cheer me up. You can't get this in most salons in NYC. Yes, that NYC where people insist we are mean, there is an oasis of peace at Butterfly Salon. read more

My favorite NYC salon for blow outs. They carry Milbon which is huge if that's you're go to shampoo. Every single team member there has great energy, receptionist is an absolute doll. It's always a perfect hair style. It's a little pricy for a blowout but I also take into account it's NYC. I've always walked out of there looking & feeling like a million bucks. read more

I have been to great salons but none compare to Butterfly studio! The hospitality provided by staff is the warmest, a cappuccino welcome was the cherry on top to my experience. Elissa was an apprentice & I was her model. She was professional & informative about the hair procedure, she delivered considering my personal input & experience. I have navigated through a handful of hair stylists/professionals for 7 years now. I've acquired a good concept of the process etc. It was impressive how quickly she was able to lift my hair to the color I normally always aim for w little to no damage on my hair. I came to the Salon for the first time last week for a trim/ touch up and while the cut isn't horrible, it's not great either. I won't be coming back. She (and I'm keeping it anonymous here) barely asked any questions, and after I repeated "I just want a trim, I really liked my last hair cut and I don't really want to do anything different to it." AND after I showed her a picture from my LAST hair cut she still asked "but what's the vibe?" I said "I don't know, bouncy 90s layers? What would you call this?" While I still had a picture out of myself from my last cut. She barely glanced at the picture and said "say less!" But then she proceeded to thin out 60% of my hair (I have very thick hair so this has been noticeable) without asking. My hair is something I take great pride in, mostly because there's a lot of it, and it always just "does its thing." It's also very very VERY low maintenance. Like, I just started drying my hair at night in my 20s kind of low maintenance. And it still (usually) looks great!! I love my hair, so when 60% of the volume was removed, you could see how that was a bit of a burn. I know I said I have a lot of hair, but I didn't think that the comment would be an invitation to lop it off. She also blunt cut all of my layers? I don't know if that's a common thing, I'm not a hair dresser, but that certainly isn't how I usually get it cut. I have a slight wave to my hair (2A I think? It's curly when wet), So when you cut it straight across, the ends flip up and start to look a bit wire-y. It also looks like she cut a solid 2 in of hair vs a trim/touch up (for conext, gang, It's only been 3 months since my last cut). Kind of my fault for not speaking up, but still-- ask SOME questions! I'm a bit conflicted with this salon since the stylist did a great job with the cut.. but there are definitely some customer service mannerisms that need to be addressed. For the price of a higher end salon, you'd think they would pay more attention to the details and the service. Once I went in, they were very polite and greeted me quickly, asked me if I would like a drink, and gave a breakdown of all the teas available. I requested a hot green tea. They took my coat to put away and I was given a folded up robe to put on. I then quickly met with my stylist who consulted about my wants and then another assistant took over the hair washing. They only put one neck towel to prevent dampness, and she kept splashing water into my eyes with no care in the world. Then we rushed back to the chair where the stylist started doing her cut but she did remove the towel from my neck... and the robe was so thin, I could feel my hair soaking through the robe and onto my shirt. The cut, albeit, was really great.. the stylist used really hot temperatures during the blowout which definitely felt burning a few times. Also.. my hot green tea I requested? It was nowhere to be seen. After the cut and blowdry was done, I paid and went to the restroom to freshen up and could feel the dampness on my shirt from my wet hair.. around my collar and my chest.. The cut was great but I don't think it's worth the price. The salon is very busy and clients are going in and out around you so you definitely can feel like a cog in their system.. BELIEVE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS - If I could give this salon a MINUS ten stars I would. It is my personal opinion and observation that Butterfly Studio Salon, again, in my personal opinion and experience is nothing more than an overpriced SUPERCUTS masquerading as an upscale salon because it's located on Fifth Ave and has some strange contract with L'Oreal. It uses the same mass production style haircut line with one customer after the other as low-end barber shoppes. Butterfly Studio Salon, again, in my opinion, is NOT upscale at all Butterfly Studio Salon is HORRIBLE, and the manager stands by her insulting words to customers who tell her that the hair cut they were given was NOT what they asked for. They offer zero apologies or refunds .. Best to file complains with New York State licensing and also New York City licensing for cosmetology For $120 plus tax, everyone can do better by just going to a low-end SUPERCUTS. The 'BARBER' that butchered my hair was Julianna Ortega. She gave me what she wanted to do given that she was running behind between customers, since her customer before me ran twenty minutes into my hour with her. She cut corners with my hair, and now my hair is a MESS ... I have never had such a bad haircut in my life, and I have been getting it cut by professionals since I was young. I walked out of the salon, and my hair frizzed up immediately because Julianna Ortega refused to do a proper blow-out. Instead, Julianna Ortega used a curling iron while talking to the customers who was coming in next so she could rush through my hair. I told her I didn't like curling irons on my hair because it is dyed/colored. Butterfly Studio Salon IS HORRIBLE!! You can go to a barber/or anywhere and get a better cut Add insult to injury -- Julianna badmouths hair products that are not sold in the salon AND that are the competition for clean products. She was hustling Iles Formula products when I already own and use the company's competition. I must have said four or five times that I would *research* Iles, and she just kept on saying they sold it at the salon. I was NOT interested. Sadly, she put products on my hair that I NEVER use because of the creepy contents in them. Julianna hid the Kérastase product in a drawer and I mentioned to her I didn't want it in my hair, and when I turned my head to look at something she was mentioning, she put it throughout my hair. Shame on her ... if a customer doesn't want something used on them, the hair person should NEVER use those products. read more

I feel SO taken care of Butterfly! Ivy does my color and she both covers my grays AND gets me to the perfect rich, dark chocolate brown without any redness (which is a challenge for brunettes)! Danielle and Alexis are amazing for cuts for curly/frizzy girls and I always walk out with the best blowout ever! This is a review not for the typical salon experience itself, but for my experience as a hair model for this salon. Having been cooped up for quarantine, my hair had become so wild and unruly that I couldn't wait to get a cut after Governor Cuomo announced that, thanks to lower COVID rates, salons could re-open. My regular stylist was booked up and I spotted an ad from Butterfly Salon looking for a model. An appointment was available right away. I asked the stylist what precautions the salon was taking to prevent COVID. The person replied that everyone had to wear masks, social distancing between chairs, etc. I asked how long my haircut would take and he said less than 2 hours. I emailed a friend who had gotten her hair done and she said that 45 minutes was the maximum for her but she'd gotten highlights that took 2 hours. I reasoned that it wouldn't be too bad. When I arrived I was given a fresh face mask and the stylist was masked as well. All seemed to be well but I noticed the salon was somewhat busy. It was buzzing. Masked people were laughing loudly and chatting. There were fewer people, but it wasn't that different from a pre-pandemic hair salon. Then came the discovery: the haircut was taking more than 1 hour. I looked at my watch. 2 hours. The stylist explained then that, because I was a model, his class would sometimes take longer. But he didn't tell me that on the email - he had lied, probably because he couldn't get enough models. But that wasn't the worst. While I was sitting getting my interminable haircut, they seated a woman WITHOUT A MASK right next to me."She's just getting a makeup tutorial done," the stylist said when I complained. I sweated underneath my mask. The woman finally left after 10 nail-biting minutes. Two hours, 15 minutes for a haircut, 10 minutes exposure to a maskless woman whom they insisted on sitting right next to me. Inside an indoor space with the air conditioning on full blast. I should have gotten up and left. But the guy was so busy fussing with my hair. Then he told me that I didn't have anything to worry about, as everyone was tested every two weeks. But WHAT ABOUT THE MASK-LESS CLIENT IN THE MAKEUP CHAIR, whom they seated next to me without a second thought? Now I'm sick to my stomach thinking about this whole experience. Now the 14-day waiting period begins, and my prayer that I didn't catch anything. NEVER AGAIN. read more

She's been my stylist for over 5 years and love how amazing she is. If there's any specific styles I want like my undercut she does it and it comes out great. Butterfly Studio Salon only employs stylists who have been trained by Kattia so you can be assured that they are all excellent. Equally good for men as well as women. I've been to Butterfly Salon 3 times: 2 for haircuts (which rock; Dana is amazing). And once for color. Sadly to say, I will never come back for color again. It started out positive, I showed my colorist what I was NOT looking for (which is yellow. I told her I'd rather she make my hair white than yellow). Then I showed her what I did want, which was blonde balayage. I said please don't make it stripey/streaky. So after making three separate trips to and from the heater to the sink (which, by the way, I just got my hair re-done at a better salon, and I did NOT sit under ANY heater!! Not once, muchless three times), my hair is fully rinsed. At this point, I notice it looks almost as if it did when I came in before the coloring. I go to get my hair blow dried, and notice still it has barely changed at all. After 3+ hours (the time online said it should be 1hr 45 mins), I leave the salon looking almost worst than I did coming in. The back of my head has more color on one side than the other, which might be some strategic move to make it look more natural or it might just be that they sat me under the heat lamp for too long on one side. I was going to go back for a complimentary touch up, but they turned my friends hair green, so I was too afraid to. Also, the colorist I used charges almost twice as much than other colorists for her services. She claimed that because my hair was already highlighted previously, that the color might not turn out exactly as desired. I just went to a better colorist, and while the hair was even MORE highlighted from her mess, he made it EXACTLY as desired. This was the first negative yelp review I've written ever because I don't like to complain about things, but I wanted to share for the safety of other ladies hair in NYC. read more

I've been contemplating whether or not to leave this review for several months, but after having to spend over $1,500 to repair the severe mistakes that were made on my head. I felt the need to review so this does not happen to someone else. I went to get my roots touched up and my lifted hair re-toned. I understand this salon is busy, but newer stylists should be encouraged to abide by what her instructor/boss asks them to do. I also think that my stylist should have been under closer supervision, so these mistakes don't happen again. I overheard her boss ask her to tone my hair a warmer tone, which she totally disregarded intentionally because she was attempting to achieve a more cool blonde despite that not being what I asked her. A bad color job, I could deal with. But the entire top layer closest to my scalp was chemically burned off. To make matters worse, I saw my stylist call someone over to the sink- I'm assuming when my hair started to fall off and they BOTH brushed it off. Completely unprofessional. I did not realize my hair was like this until I got home because she blow dryed it in a way that it was blended and fluffed in. My dumb a*s still decided to tip her $40 too... Sadly that's not even where it ends. When I touched my scalp the following morning, I had several large bloody scabs on it. My entire head was a grey tone blonde. All in all, after the damage that was done to my hair- I had to go through so many different processes to attempt to salvage what was left, and have spent so much money doing so. But really I think what's been worse is that I reached out to the salon the very next day & was met with radio silence. If I could give it a 0/5 stars I would. read more

Tamara is seriously a blonde girl's dream. A different colorist at another salon over processed my hair, and time after time wasn't listening to me. I found this salon on Yelp, called to ask who would be best for me... the gentleman I spoke with took quite some time to really hear my needs and place me with Tamara. Faye is magical. Over the years, she has given me balayage, dark brown hair, and everything in between - and each time, she has done it beautifully. The last time I visited her (summer '21) was a stand out experience for me. I had just dyed my hair in full balayage (and was quite blonde at the time) and needed to dye it back to dark brown for a modeling job. I mistakenly booked the wrong type of appointment (a single process) and Faye rearranged her calendar on a Saturday to ensure that she could give me what I needed in a way that would keep my hair healthy and looking great. Her talent, and customer service, is above and beyond, and given my experience in many of the higher end salons in New York, feel that this experience, especially from a senior artist, is rare. I had such a great experience at this salon. Like many others, I ,too, made a mess of my hair during quarantine. I had a mixture of 3 different colors in my hair from piling on the dyes. The hair dresser (her name is IVY) was able to strip all the color out and give me a a lovely chocolate brown balayage while still keeping my hair's integrity. I have curly hair so keeping my curls in tact as much as possible is extremely important to me when dying and straightening. I would definitely book with her, really amazing work. read more
