Went to Butterfield's Pancake House in Scottsdale today with the fam. Had high hopes after looking at the online menu. Service: Good. We were seated fairly quickly ( less than 15 min) on a weekday morning and sat outside to avoid the cacophony of indoor conversations. Beverages: Decent. Got a double shot of espresso with a separate glass of milk, and cup of ice to make my own latte. Kids got the fresh squeezed orange juice (lot of pulp), and a strawberry banana smoothie that didn't taste like real fruit though the menu stated it, and had a weird texture that coats the throat. Breakfast: Kids had the scrambled eggs which were reminiscent of the ones found at a hotel continental breakfast; wet and unnatural tasting. Apple Cinnamon Pancakes looked unappealing and tasted just as disappointing - regular pancakes with what looked like a can of apple pie filling dumped unceremoniously on top. Banana Cream Pancakes had decent banana slices but the "cream" was an odd glaze that had a chalky aftertaste. New Mexico Skillet with over easy eggs: Eggs were drenched in oil yet, remarkably, the best part of this dish. The hash browns were sliced rounds of undercooked, unseasoned potatoes. They were topped with onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes, all unseasoned and dismally soft. It was sprinkled with cheese, and a pile of chorizo just dumped in one spot on the plate. Certainly seemed cooked separately as nothing meshed on the plate. Oh, and a few sad pieces of underripe avocado. This American cuisine was devoid of character and taste. In the area for a few days and this place got great reviews as well as a recommendation from our concierge. It has a nice patio as well as cute bright indoor seating. We were seated quickly and the staff were prompt and friendly. We had lots of great choices and I appreciated we could do gluten free options. The pancakes were hearty and fluffy, the eggs were so fluffy and light it seemed like air, and my poached eggs were perfectly runny. Delicious breakfast in a fun environment! The menu had a lot of great options and we would go back again for just the same type of quality but in a new taste. It is in Scottsdale so prices are a bit higher, and they did charge extra for gluten free toast but I appreciated being asked about it before they assumed we would be ok with the up charge. Pancakes in the business name? Sign me up! I went here on a Sunday morning and it was CROWDED. Unfortunately, they do not have any sort of virtual waitlist so you have to be in-person to put your name in for a table. The line to see the host stand was out the door and wrapped around part of the building. It took about 20 minutes to get in the door and then it was another 45 minute wait for us to be seated. Their estimated wait time was accurate as we were seated around that time. I ordered the Apple Cinnamon Pecan Caramel Pancakes. Pancakes were delicious and fluffy. I liked all the different flavors they had on their menu. Service was average. It being super busy could have had something to do with it, but it took an extended amount of time to get our drinks and even longer for my friend to get milk with her coffee. Lots of parking is available as Butterfield's as it is located is in a shopping center, but this is a stand alone building. If I end up making my way back to Arizona, I'd come back here but I would try to go at a non peak dining time. read more

If you want big helpings of unhealthy food...this is your place. What they do well: once you sit, wait staff is very friendly. What they can improve on: estimating wait time. We were told 30-40 minutes. I asked the hostess if I would get a text and we sat at number two on the waitlist for 20 minutes. I finally went up and asked what was going on. Visited last week for the first time and I am always wary when a place has a food in their name. It seems presumptuous to imply you have the best of anything. Well let me tell you this, Butterfields should change their name to "Worlds Best Pancake"! I grew up in a southern household and thought nothing could top mom's homemade pancakes but boy was I wrong. Even if you don't "love" pancakes you owe it to yourself to visit and you might become addicted. Their basic pancake is incredible and they have tons of options to mix it up. I tried the pecan apple topping and it was great. As you can see in the pictures the portions are huge. Everything else we had (eggs, hash browns, crepes and bacon) were also amazing but the pancake is the star. Creamy butter and thick maple syrup is all you need to eat what I think is the best pancake I have ever had. The service was spot on and the place was very clean which is also a huge selling point. Terrible experience with the host staff!!! They were more concerned on wiping menus than communicating with customers. We requested booth so they proceeded to sit us at a four top. We again requested a booth and were asked to wait, which we had no issues as they wiped down booth. Table was wiped down and set up but still we're not being sat. More time passed so I went to hostess staff and was told we had to wait for a server in order for us to be sat. We left and will not return. TLDR: this spot is a gem! Okay, I'll be honest I had low expectations even though Butterfields was showing high ratings. First impressions - super cute space!
