BurtoNZ Bakery is located in Windsor near the Safeway and in that shopping center. If you haven't been, it's an amazing place to check out! I got a small box of treats for a small group that I work with and everyone loved the breakfast pastries! They have incredible pasteries that are absolutely delicious! They have a great selection so that whatever you are looking for, they have! I went first thing in the morning so there wasn't a line and the breakfast items were soooooo delicious! Every time we drive up the coast, my Kiwi husband can't wait until we make our obligatory stop at Burtons. The meat pies are so delicious with a scrumptious flaky crust and yummy fillings like steak and cheese and mushroom with goat cheese. I came back from a wedding in NZ a decade ago with an insane love for Aussie/Kiwi/British meat pies and I've always been on the lookout for where to get my meat pie fix. After visiting a winery in the area, I had this place bookmarked as a must-visit, and I'm really glad I did. The pies are kept warm so they are immediately ready to eat which I really appreciated. I started with a steak and mushroom which was great, savory and rich. I then moved on to the minced beef and cheese, which was rich but with the added tang of sharp cheddar. I would've preferred my pies to be seasoned a little more, but my wife has a low tolerance for salt and felt the fillings were perfect; we both agreed that we wished the pastry was a little more firm and flaky as their pie shells were soft and somewhat malleable. Loved their sausage roll and meat pies. I dare you, NO way you can eat 2 of their meat pies without falling asleep afterwards. I highly recommend the bacon and cheddar, however there are also great vegetarian options. But every time, I go they're out of the scotch egg. Minced beef & cheese; the BEST. It had great texture, flavor and was seasoned well in a flaky pie crust. I should've ordered 2!!!! 2. Sausage roll: interesting texture in a warm roll. The sausage was somewhat soft almost like it didn't have casing and had a mellow flavor 3. Lemon bar: basically a cheesecake lemon square. It was ok. Customer service very good. The savory pies were. Excellent. I had the egg and bacon one. The crust was perfect and delicious. It is pricey. I know it would take time to make the dough and create the pie so I'm sure the price would be labor related. So, for me, it would be a treat every once in awhile. I do have a gripe that a bakery should have more than drip coffee, like an espresso machine. I do love my lattes. Coffee was good though. We ordered the multigrain loaf of bread. It was so delicious. We love small bakeries so we stopped there spur of the moment when we happen to be in Windsor. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Hubby had a craving for "home" so we decided to take a trip to visit BurtoNZ bakery for lunch. It was easy to get to - right off of highway 101, and plenty of parking since it was located in a shopping center. They have some seating both inside and outside, and it feels cozy. They had whole loaves of bread ready to go, meat pies and sausage rolls on order, and pastries behind the glass. The employee behind the counter greeted us immediately, and gave us a little time (as requested) to read/look at what they offered. I am not kidding when we say we ordered one of everything-we did! The prices were fair given the very specific type of food that you can't find in most places. We spent about $130 here, but like I said we got one of everything. The sausage roll was delicious - the crust was flaky, and the sausage itself was flavorful. It was exactly what my hubby was craving and he said it tasted just like what he used to get in Australia. The lamingtons were also very good. We don't usually see them with whipped cream in the middle (is this the New Zealand way?) but the cake itself was perfection. The meat pies were soooo good... we can no longer buy the frozen meat pies now that we know these are close. We'll be back for more sometime soon! read more

Im pretty sure restaurants are supposed to have 10 minute grace periods for customers to pick up their food after the restaurant closes. I was driving all the way from san jose to santa rosa to try this place as a fellow kiwi i was genuinely excited to try this bakery out. I was 20 minutes away and they were about to close in 30 minutes. I asked to place an order (not a large order at all, just a few meat pies but lady on the phone would not ask me ab my order) and i was refused. POT PIES!!! I LOVE pot pies but am very picky about them (shame on all the grocery store fresh and frozen and costco ones) and these cute but large handheld pies couldn't even have been imagined up in my wildest dreams. For my inaugural visit I got the beef and mushroom pie, the beef pot pie with potato topping, a bacon+egg breakfast pie, and the creamy chicken pie. I can't even choose a favorite but if I HAD to rank them, it's in that order #4 to #1. Im a breakfast girl and have had eggs cheese and bacon 100 ways but the breakfast pie was even yummier than I imagined with really soft but fully cooked eggs and generous bacon bits and lots of cheese!!! But my favorite was the chicken pot pie because it reminded me of ones from my childhood that I'd get from a now-closed pot pie shop in downtown Fresno, CA. It's been a decade since I had one that good and BurtoNZ came so close it was like a time machine in my mouth. The potatoes that topped the beef pie were perfect. A delicious thick potato blanket covering the lightly gravied beef bed. Beautiful. I wish I was the size of a lil polly pocket so I could nestle underneath the warm supersoft potato blanket and doze off on my meat bed into pot pie wonderland forever. Thick flaky crust on all pies, the cold ones I got for later held up very well reheated in microwave and oven but oven was better of course. Diff crusts on the breakfast and chicken ones they were square and a little flakier than the beef ones. I also got a coconut/raspberry/cake dessert and it too was delicious. When you walk in there is such a home vibe to this place. It is a pure gem of Sonoma county. People come from different cities because of how truly wonderful this bakery is. Windsor's first, and only New Zealand style Artisanal Bakery. This family is absolutely wonderful. If you have ever spoken with the owners they have absolutely wonderful New Zealander accents and are some of the most kind and genuine human beings I have ever met. One of the top reasons I find regular spots is not only the quality and efforts of the food and environment but most importantly the service and character of the business owners themselves. Everything is absolutely wonderful here. They bake fresh sandwiches and pies every morning as well as the most amazing ham and cheese and chocolate croissants. The earlier the come the more wonderful food experience you will have. Most of the sandwiches run out by 2pm so go before then if you want them! They are fantastic! Hidden in the corner of a shopping area, this place can be easy to miss. But once you have a pie, you'll never be able to get it out of your mind. Their savory pies are so delicious! I've had the steak and potatoes pie, chicken pot pie, and today I tried the mushroom. I have never been disappointed. I also tried their breads for the first time today. If you look up at the menu board, the whole board is practically covered in gold stickers indicating awards of some sort. Anyway, I decided to order the Asiago olive bread sliced and I'm so glad I did. It's addicting! The olives are perfectly dispersed throughout the whole fluffy loaf with the perfect crunchy exterior. I've tried croissants from many different bakeries and cafes but I always gravitate towards theirs. They're very fluffy and buttery with a slightly crispy exterior. I love breaking off a piece and dipping it in my coffee--great combo. I haven't tried anything other than their croissants but will definitely have to next time. read more

The pastry was very generic and lacking flavor. However, it was perfectly cooked to a flaky layered shell. Such a big mess, it was all over me. It looked like i was attacked by a pitbull. So, if you haven't figured it out yet, i tried the meat pies. The beef and cheese was low standard freezer food. The creamy chicken pie was lacking ingredients. I still liked it because it had flavor and i am a sucker for a good chicken pot pie. The desert came next, the Lamington. An old school Tiger Tail with the best jelly coating you have ever had. Was on a trip with a friend from New Zealand, so we had to stop, especially when she read that they had sausage rolls and meat pies! She grabbed a bunch of stuff, but I also got a sausage roll ($6.50), a steak and mushroom pie ($9), and three desserts: a berry galette ($4.95), a raspberry Lambington ($4.95), and a Louise Slice ($4.25). Everything was delicious and the desserts were not too sweet. The berry galette had a flaky crust with fresh berries and the Lambington was light and fluffy with a great raspberry filling and slightly sweetened whipped cream and then covered with coconut. The Louise Slice was like a shortbread crust with some kind of fruit filling (fig?) and coconut covering the whole thing. The sausage roll was quite large and the meat pie was about 4"; both reheated nicely and had good flavor. I asked my friend about the authenticity and she confirmed that everything tasted as they should, so she was quite happy.
