First couple of times I went to BurtoNZ it was great! I recommended it to a ton of ex-pats. Last time I got an order most of the pies were surprisingly average (we did a large order of a couple of dozen pies). Underseasoned mince pies and beef pies with not much meat. I've tried contacting the owner with questions or with order requests, and sometimes she responds, sometimes she doesn't. Lastly - they tend to run out of the desserts fairly early on (at least on the occasions I've been in person, but it's been a little while since I was last there). read more

Love, love, love this place. So warm and cozy, the staff is so friendly and helpful, and the food is great. We love the sweet baguette, the cheddar scones are super, the ham and cheese croissant delicious, and don't get me started about the pies. The draw here are the savory pies, mince and cheese, creamy chicken, and steak all great. Love the sausage roll the most, oh yea and the quiche is great too. These folks are doing something different with the NZ thing and the whole thing is pretty special. I grew up in Australia. I've been living in the U.S. for 15 years and have hunted down meat pies wherever I go...NYC...Seattle...Bay Area...Los Angeles. Hands down this is the best meat pie I've tasted! Yes they are NZ pies and not Aussie pies but I will forgive them that. The ingredients are top quality and the pastry crust is perfection! I drove 2 hours to come here and taste their pies. Many of them joined us for the drive home. I was telling my husband that these pies are better than the ones from home (Oz). Over there they are quite common and even the good bakeries use cheaper cuts of meat. The steak pies are filled with STEAK! Who would have guessed. My husband is veg (I don't understand it). He loved the spicy vegetable + mushroom & goat cheese pies. He also tried the quiche...and loved it! (He doesn't usually like quiche). Ok so we were starving and ate like piggies! I had the mince pie + steak and cheese + sausage roll...big piggie. All were delicious! I loved the mince the best since it most resembled a traditional Aussie meat pie. The steak stuff was awesome but way too good...a traditional aussie steak pie would have more gristle in it (haha). We also ate the lamingtons and vanilla slice when we got home. Also awesome! If taking them away ask for them without cream. The cream made the lamingtons soggy but they were still delicious if a bit moist. The vanilla slice had coconut on it. I will forgive them that. An aussie one wouldn't have coconut. But it's still the only place I've ever seen a vanilla slice in this country!!!! FYI the lamingtons they sell at Dean & Delucca in Napa is NOT a lamington! We went to BurtonNZ to kill an hour before a wedding in Healdsburg. We read the reviews and decided it would be a fun adventure and we were right! We got there an hour before they closed so they were sold out of a lot of their stock so we did not get to try the sandwiches or many of the pastries, but we did try a selection. The asiago olive bread was probably our favorite we brought an avocado and slathered the bread in it and it was delicious, we also took some home and toasted it and dipped it in olive oil and it was fantastic, but I think the best was using it to make a ham sandwich with freshly sliced cucumbers. The brown butter sugar cookie was great but huge, we took half home and froze it, which was lovely. We tried the ginger slice, which did not really appeal to me, it tasted like someone made a paste of milk ground ginger and powdered sugar and poured it over a shortbread cookie, but my boyfriend loved it. read more

I bought a couple of (delicious) baguettes and happily left knowing that my husband and I would soon be back. While we never made it back to the store we found they have a stand at the Sunday farmers market in Windsor. This has now been a routine and my husbands favorite thing. Background: My family is from NZ and I've gone back several times, only to return to Cali with suitcases stuffed with food, cause that's the #1 thing everyone wants brought back...and while chocolates, lollies and a few boxes of Edmunds custard & cadburys baking cocoa are easy to stuff in a suitcase, it's next to impossible to get the bakery items in there :-( But along comes Burtonz Bakery - Hero to the Kiwi NorCal community who can't get a taste of home anywhere but here. Bacon & Egg pies, mince & cheese pies, potato top pies, sausage rolls, cream donuts, lamingtons, custard squares, savoury scones..... if you're missing your NZ bakery, this is the place to get your fix. I live in the East Bay & the drive is about 90 minutes north, so it's not a journey I make often ... but perhaps that's a good thing, haha. If it were any closer, I'd probably be coming here FAR too often. The owner is great. They are fairly busy, especially mornings and Saturday, so if there are items you specifically want, they do take orders over the phone and will set your items aside for you so that you don't arrive craving a bacon & egg pie only to find they've sold out. I've been here 3 times over the past 1-2 years and we typically order ahead, just to be sure - usually a few items ready-to-eat and then a few pies frozen to take home and put in our own freezer to eat later on. Each time, our items are right there and ready to go when we arrive. This past Saturday, we decided to stay for a bit and ordered a couple extra hot pies to eat there at the shop - and then the owner came round and handed us a bottle of Watties Tomato sauce, haha. Perfect! As a final note, though they specialize in their NZ baked items, they have a wide array of regular baked goods too, like various artisan breads, cookies, cheesecake, etc. So even if you're not Kiwi, if you just enjoy baked goods in general, this is a great spot to visit. Will probably head back there in a few months time once the craving for NZ goodies strikes again... Maybe next time they'll have afghans and pavlova.... OMG, that would be awesome.... lol read more

The meat pies are fantastic. I think I've tried them all now and there's not one that I wouldn't have again. From the flaky crust to the fresh ingredients inside, I can't get enough of them. Favorites: steak & potato top pie, steak & mushroom pie, bacon & egg pie, sausage roll, like I said I love them all! But unfortunately you have to get through the rude, indifferent people who work there. So just suck it up and try to get through the order and you will be rewarded! Tip: if you order multiple pies make sure they write on the bag what's inside. Sometimes they do, often they don't and then you're left wondering what it is you're heating up. My husband went to high school for a time in NZ. He has been wanting to try this place forever. It was pretty packed on a Saturday right before noon and the line was ever-present. It's a little pricey ($6 for a 4-inch round meatpie) but you can taste the quality of the ingredients and the soft and flakey bread of the meatpies and sausage rolls brings it all together. What almost ruined it for me was the blonde lady in charge questioning loudly why we needed 2 boxes. Ummm.... we just spent $80 on your baked goods, you can throw in an extra .20 cent box if we want to separate the items, if not, just charge us for the box. Our family happened to be passing through Windsor on our way north bound, when we were hungry for good grub and hot coffee. This AMAZING little spot just happened to be next to the grocery store so we stopped in. Boy oh boy, what a treat! We got a cro-muffin sticky bun thing that may have been the best thing I've ever eaten in my life! We also got a meat pie and a sausage roll, both were absolutely fantastic! The coffee was smooth and went down easy (not over roasted or watered down, it was just right!) My only regret was that we didn't order more to go! Lovely little shop with wonderful friendly service! As a New Zealander I had to come check out these savory pies. I travel for work and always look up places that are attempting the NZ pie. This place...INCREDIBLE. Just like back home. I drove to BurtoNZ from the East Bay twice because everything was so good. The custard squares, fresh bread, and savory pies are the best I've had in the States. The sausage rolls are better than anything I've ever had, even better then back home. I was stoked to find that they had Watties Tomato Sauce to go with the pies and sausage rolls. The owner, Warren, was very welcoming and remembered me when I came in the second time. Warren is very passionate about his food and I really appreciated the quality. Windsor has waited a long time for a good bakery but what we got is a great one!!! I wanted to check out this new spot and stopped by on the second day they were open. This is a New Zealand style bakery so there are some items we are not used to in the states and let me tell you, that is a VERY good thing. They have savory pies with fillings like steak & cheese, bacon & egg, mushroom & goat cheese and mince (seasoned ground beef). They also make traditional sausage rolls but they were out of those while I was there. I tried a mushroom & goat cheese pie and it was delish. Flaky pastry and delicious filling. I also may have tried a scone and a cookie that were also great but i'll keep that to myself. I'm a nursing student at a local hospital so I also took 3 boxes of pastries to the nurses and doctors. Everyone raved about the New Zealand cream donuts and the brownies. I also personally tested the oatmeal cookies, apple slices, and shortbread. Yes, I was very full. From what I can tell it looks like they will also be making a variety of interesting artisanal breads. I can hardly wait. People of Windsor, no need to go to Healdsburg anymore for your bakery fix.
