Unfortunately I had to have one of my cat's eye removed after an ulcer ruptured. It was one of the most awful decisions I've ever had to make, but I had no other choice. I am forever grateful for the emergency staff who did an amazing job taking care of him and did an excellent job with his surgery. He is healing so well and is a happy boy again.

    Poppy, 2011 - 2023

Our dog, Poppy (12.5 years), had been having fevers for the past ~4 weeks. Our local vet tried several treatments as the symptoms changed throughout that time. In the end, she was on prednisone to calm a mysterious infection. Christmas day and evening she appeared normal and happy. She was let out about midnight on 12/26 as she was panting (she usually ran warm as a "winter" dog, as I called her -- possibly part Husky with an undercoat -- but the prednisone causes panting as well). We didn't see her for a while so my daughter went looking for her. She was lying up against the fence and couldn't seem to move (as dogs are known to do when possibly near the end?), so my daughter carried her inside. I called our local vet who told me to call BEVS. They instructed us to bring her there immediately (about an hour away). My kids got her there at about 2:00 a.m. and I received a berating phone call because I'd been giving her prednisone for "so long." The person on the other end of the line spoke anxiously and angrily to me, and I believe it was the vet. Shouldn't she be calming me down, not making me feel guilty and alarmed? The estimate to diagnose her was $4,000 - $5,000, but they wouldn't do anything until we put down a 50% "deposit." My son paid with his debit card and left. I received a call at 8:00 a.m. that there was all kinds of "free (?)" fluid around her lungs and the prednisone might be masking something in her liver. She spoke very fast with lots of information that, I guess, I was expected to understand. At that point, the prognosis was very poor, and I wanted our dog home so we could say goodbye in our own home. They told me she wouldn't survive the trip and it wouldn't be kind to drive her home just to euthanize her, to which I agreed. They told me we needed to get there as soon as possible if we wanted to say goodbye. We all got in the car, including our other dog, Bean, and we were there in an hour. This is the part that makes me angriest. They knew she was declining quickly, but they had us waiting for about 20 minutes, first in the front waiting room and then in what I would call a "bereavement" room where they would bring her so we could say goodbye. While we were waiting for them to bring her to us, someone came to tell us that she was "degrading" quickly and they couldn't move her so we needed to hurry to see her in the oxygen chamber where she had been. By the time we got there, she had stopped breathing and there was no reaction on her face. Even though her heart was still beating, she was gone. THEY HAD US WAITING FOR 20 MINUTES THAT WE COULD HAVE SPENT WITH HER. They're the ones who told us how imperative it was for us to get there quickly, and then they made us wait, and we missed seeing her in her final minutes alive, albeit in very poor condition. To add insult to injury, I received a message the next day from someone very soft spoken giving their condolences, but reminding me that there's an outstanding balance. She added that there was no hurry in replying. Well, if there was no hurry, why are they calling me for money the next day? They charged for euthanasia even though they told us she passed on her own. Also, what they call a deposit is actually a down payment. I thought the deposit would be reversed once all treatment was complete and a payment plan or payment for the total bill was made. BEVS should offer some kind of hospice service. They knew at 2:00 a.m. how poorly Poppy was doing and had a good sense what the prognosis was. It would have been an amazing option if they could have sent her home with some dog-dose of morphine (or something similar) so Poppy could be comfortable and we could be with her. (But that's not exactly the most profitable option for them.) UPDATE: I went to pick up Poppy's ashes on January 3 and couldn't help airing my grievances to the receptionist. She seemed very empathetic and suggested I email the managers of the clinic. She told me to use the general email address as everyone in the organization sees all the emails that go there. As soon as I got home that day, I emailed them a revised version of the above information with some questions about billing. It is January 7, and I have not heard back from anyone. This was not our first experience at a vet e.r. Years ago, in Massachusetts, we had to bring our constipated, overweight cat to the e.r. They gave her enemas and got her regular, but they wanted to do a colectomy to shorten her colon at the tune of $4,000. We asked if there were any treatment options at home, and they gave us a syringe. We had to give her water injections under her skin to rehydrate her and put canned pumpkin in her food to keep her regular. We ended up spending around $300, and this worked. She lost weight, stayed regular and lived another eight years. Vets need to trust that pet parents can often treat their animals at home with proper guidance and necessary materials.

I wish I could give 10 stars. I had to put my 13 year old cat down a couple weeks ago - I'm 33 with no kids and this cat was my baby. From the first phone call until receiving his remains, their compassion has gone unmatched. Putting him to rest is one of the hardest things I have ever had to go through and BEVS and its people made the process as seamless as possible. I cannot thank you enough BEVS staff, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.

How do you feel for killing this beautiful boxer?
    Erin L.

You people are horrible!!! Shouldn't be open for emergency situations if your not willing to help!!! Wouldn't except a payment plan to save this beautiful boxers life!!! His name was Jackson!! Remember that cause believe me he will get his revenge! His story will be told! You said one price then when it was said that we could get that amount you decide to raise the cost by 1800!!!! Don't go here if you want your animal to be properly cared for.

    Fergus!
    Molly H.

We have been here many times over the years, obviously always under stressful circumstances when we're completely raw with anxiety and sometimes grief. We've always found the staff compassionate, responsive, and professional. Sometimes there was a bit of a wait but that's understandable because it's an emergency clinic. There are no "appointments" in this kind of context and we have never once felt that our place in the triage process was not appropriate. The last time we had an animal there our cat Fergus had suffered a freak lung collapse about a year and a half ago during routine dental cleaning at our regular vet, and he was transferred to BEVS to be monitored in their oxygenated cage over night. As we were leaving the vet tech told us to call any time to check up on him. Being a freaked-out cat mom (and because he has FIV I get extra worried) I did call every couple hours throughout the night. I would apologize for bothering them every time and they would say "no no no I promise you aren't bothering us!" and were very reassuring. He recovered completely and is a very healthy, happy little gentleman. We also went there about three years ago to get chemo for our little cat Bea. As it turned out her tumor was not responsive to the chemo, but we were warned that was a possibility and chose to go ahead and try anyway. Their veterinary oncologist was so kind and took lots of time to explain everything and answer all of our questions. We didn't feel rushed, pressured, or judged by her at any point in that difficult process. We haven't been to the new facility and... well, no offense but I hope we don't have to for a very long time. It looks beautiful from the outside, though, and we feel very safe knowing that you guys are only a phone call and short drive away. Thank you!

Squirrel with a leaking bladder that needed catheterized. BEVS wouldn't help him.

I'm a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in the state of Vermont. I had an urgent but uncomplicated issue that needed addressed in a squirrel on New Year's Day. These people claimed it was illegal to treat wildlife even when brought in by a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. This is absolutely not true. It was laziness and fear on the part of the veterinary staff. Shameful, BEVS. You should clarify that you are a dog and cat hospital only if you don't want to treat things you are insecure with.

I had come there for empty cat litter bags for compost which one employee would leave aside for me, they weren't there but I felt like trash needed some attention. In the future, kindness would be more appropriate. I never take anything from the trash that was not left aside for me (prior) and clearly you do not feel like cleaning up your own mess so, thank you is a more appropriate response than ridiculous threats. (which aren't even true) I have spoken to PD back there and they do not bother with someone picking up trash, and occasionally feeding homeless who are living back there. I hope people read this and clean that store out of incredibly rude employees--- I had a prior conversation where I asked to re-use actual trash--- and the staff would take one litter bag and stuff all of the other bags inside of one and leave it behind the dumpster. (Who's name I will not be mentioning because if the staff are going to speak to me that badly... I'm sure they will also mistreat fellow employees who didn't see anything wrong with why I was there) Someone had dumped a trash bag full of rained on clothing all over the ground. I picked up the mess. Piece by piece, instead of thank you, I got yelled and threatened. I'm so tired... this is my second review like this, where I did the right thing and was yelled at for it at a different business as well. Maybe you should have your staff, pick up the alley yourselves.... and also tell them to interact with unexpected people with kindness... not rudeness and cruelty. (If I were actually unhoused and an angry, local homeowner, I might have cried after she spoke to me that way) If there are rules about trash, then there need to be rules that the staff clean up the messes in the alley as well--- instead, I will make sure to post photos everytime I drive by there and see a mess they told me not to touch and threatened me if I went near. I wonder if the landlord will start to fine them.---- I spend thousands of dollars a month in that Plaza. I'm sure there will be plenty of times I will need to pass by.

Very common treatment that can be cured at home, however I wanted to be safe due to sensitivity. I went in to see Dr.Wagner. After 30 minutes of talking she FINALLY assed the hot spot and went over treatment. The estimated price was 322 dollars (I have a care plan so the visit itself is free) they attempted to charge me 50 dollars for Cephalexin, 112 dollars for apoquel and 60 dollars for a probiotic. I explained that I could get the Cephalexin for 11.87 at Osco pharmacy with a written prescription and I could get the allergy medication (apoquel) from chewy for under 70 dollars. I also explained that I have a probiotic I give my dog daily at home for far cheaper and would not like to pay for that service. Dr.Wagner told her staff to tell me that "she did not have time to hand write a prescription so I could either wait a day or two, or pay the fee in house." I was also charged 76 dollars to have a vet tech shave the area and apply a cream on the hot spot. Which I could have done myself and the medication they used is sold at EVERY pet supply store. I was discharged without any follow up instructions, care, or medications. I am not one to write a negative review. However this place will take advantage of you and your wallet if they can. I have 10 years of healthcare experience, 2 years of pharmacy experience and 18 years of being a pet owner. I have NEVER met a facility that is so willing to Nickel and dime you like VCA. I will be following up with the board with this matter as well to protect people from being taken advantage of financially. It's been 5 hours and I still have yet to receive a prescription for my dogs infection which is very negligent. DO NOT get a care plan from here if you are looking for a reliable vet who will put clients and their pets as a first priority. I am glad I did not overpay for the prescriptions I can get for under 10 dollars. I do wish I did not allow them to shave my dog's patch of skin for 75 dollars after waiting 2 hours in an office. But I guess you can't fight every battle. Please do yourself and find a vet that cares. Best, Angie and Bear.
