We had a huskydoodle who was under their care for an unknown issue but we suspected it was hemorrhaging of some kind since the problem was intermittent. Fitzgerald kept Jasper there for multiple days on IV fluids at my request because it was summer time and 90+ outside each day. He couldn't keep foods or fluids down. They said his bloodwork was normal and all imaging was normal. They recommended an exploratory surgery. They said worse case scenario we find nothing and he goes home with you tonight. Keeping in mind they wanted to do this on a banking holiday and gave us 2 hours or less to get thousands of dollars together. We were able to get the funds together and surgery was the next morning. We stopped by the night before, took him for a short walk, sat with him outside. At no point did anyone say he may not make it through surgery. I would understand if it was a reaction to medication he had never had, there is always risk with surgery. He went in for surgery that was supposed to be 3-4 hours, about 10 minutes in we received a call that he wouldn't make it off the table. They edited their records, their staff including the receptionist was sent to grief counseling. There are so many issues and lies with what they did it beyond distasteful. Jasper was my shadow, my ride or die. I see my pets as family. If you do as well and want the best for them I recommend anyone else. I accept things happen but to not have the common decency to tell us the truth and let us say goodbye to our baby boy (he wasn't even 4 yrs old) is just inhumane. I've been going here for my rats for a few months now, and they've always been kind and considerate no matter what's going on. They're also extremely knowledgeable about the care of specific animals under the small pets category, not just "pocket pets" as a general category. It's clear that they see many exotics regularly and don't treat all small pets like the same animal. They even offered nebulizing for my pet rat that had a URI, and seemed very familiar with treating this common issue in rats. Though no vet care is cheap, I always feel like I'm getting my money's worth here; I've seen multiple exotic vets at Essex (at least 4?) and they're all top notch, I feel comfortable with all of them. Essex Vet has also been able to get me in on short notice before, which while not expected, is always a nice bonus. They've also got a text line that can be used to check in post-op, ask questions, or schedule appointments which is incredibly helpful. I've had to get two of my pets put to sleep, and I'm glad that I was able to do it here. Everyone was extremely kind and considerate. The vet who had seen one of my boys previously (for the issue I put him to sleep for) even came in to validate my decision to let him go, which was really comforting and a huge relief to me. The staff at Essex Vet are very qualified and I'm happy to trust them with my pets' care. In addition to their knowledge, they're able to provide flexible appointment scheduling and a warm environment. I'd definitely recommend anyone, especially those with exotic pets, to go here for their pets' care.

I first went to their clinic two months ago when it became a hardship to take my dog to his last…read morevet due to transportation issues. I don't drive. My dog is a guide dog and I'm blind. He received an exam and all of his booster shots and when I asked for a prescription for his flea and tick and heart worm meds, the vet was resistant to allowing me to fill it at the pharmacy I had been doing business with before. She insisted I try a different med stating it would do the same thing, and be much cheaper at her pharmacy. I agree to try it and she gave me a free sample that he would try in December (this month). He hated it and this chewable medication was as hard as concrete. I called the office to request prescriptions for the meds he'd had been on, and was met with resistance because I was going to have them filled at Chewy's pharmacy. the difference between the vets pharmacy and Chewy was $125.00. when I spoke with Chewy, they told me that Essex Vet refuses to work with them as far as confirming prescriptions is concerned, and I would have to send in the prescriptions myself. Essex vet refused to send me the prescriptions stating that it was against corporate policy to do so, and if I wanted them I would have to pick them up in person. Did I mention that I'm blind? Sometimes it can take a week or longer to get rides. I did finally got them and sent it in by mail to Chewy. I meanwhile called Essex Vets corporate office, and the person who called me back assured me that there is no policy against sending prescriptions to customers. By the way they are owned by Blue River. The corporate person I spoke to asked if I minded if she spoke with the vet about my complaint and I said that would be fine, and maybe it would improve the level of service provided. I never heard back from either one of them. I got the prescriptions from Chewy without any problem, at a much better price, and in time to continue his meds without interruption. The only hitch was that Essex Vet only wrote it for six months, not the usual year that vets normally do. so I will have to pay for another vet visit from someone else in six months to get his meds prescribed again. I'm 76 years old, had dogs most of my life, and have never run into this kind of treatment from any of my dog's vets. I've since spoken to other vets who have assured me that they do business in a very different way and would be happy to have my dog as a patient. To describe what this vet did as petty and unprofessional is an understatement.

They also had a nice little lawn out front with doggie bags for clean up. All in all a very good operation with great staff.

While the staff is generally nice, the treatment protocols have been frustratingly repetitive and expensive with little long-term success. Through this time, they have made no follow up calls to even check in to see how he is doing; not one!! For years, we were given the same medication for the same duration, which only acted as a band-aid. We finally received a proper diagnostic (skin scrape) in late 2025 which revealed a Staph infection. After spending over $600, the infection returned worse than before just a week after treatment ended. When I suggested today that he needed a longer course of medication, they ignored my input and prescribed the same duration that failed previously. Mind you, todays visit was a month from the skin scrape "tech" appointment, which again was with meds, $600. I was told because it was a "tech" appointment and not a "real" visit I would need to book another $100 visit just to get medication again. so, within a month we have spent nearly $1000 just to end up back to where we were. I will say some of this is my fault as well, I should have seen the writing on the wall months ago that all they really want is to be in your pocket. If you are thinking about going there, don't. if you're there currently, maybe it's time to looks elsewhere. Additionally, during this most recent visit, they performed a lab test without asking me or quoting the price first--I was surprised by the charge at the counter. Transparency is important, and I feel like I am being stuck in a loop of ineffective treatments and surprise bills.

We came onboard as experienced fosters and trainers/ behaviorists for a litter of puppies. It was chaotic from beginning to end. I'm hoping it was a one off. Brigitte is not accepting of any advice or respectful of others knowledge, doing what's best for her rather than the puppies. Understanding the big picture is extremely important and she doesn't get that, nor was willing to consider any opinion that didn't fit her narrative. Perhaps she's better with older dogs/proper placement and should stay away from puppies. She also overdoses on worming meds for puppies. 2 doses within a week and wanting a third dose in the 2nd week. Twice in transferring puppies she used volunteer drivers who did not have adequate ways to transport. Puppies riding unsecured is unsafe for the driver, the puppy and others on the road. It's hard to write a negative review of a rescue because it's hard work, but in my case this was a negative experience.

It all began 12 weeks ago, when we originally filled out their extremely lengthy application, which asks very personal and intrusive questions, and even went as far as asking us who would care for the dog if we died from Covid. I understand the need for dog rescues to be thorough with the applications to ensure the dogs be placed in the absolute perfect home, but their screening process and grilling of their applicants are preventing dogs from going to good homes. After filling out the application, I found it odd we never received any sort of confirmation or correspondence that the application was even received. The original dog we were interested in and whose name we had put on the application had been adopted, so I sent an e-mail with another dog's name who we would like to learn more about. I never received a response from my e-mail, and did not receive any communication from them until about the 6 week mark. At that time, an email was sent, stating that our application was under review and they will begin processing it and contact the vet of a previous dog. Days pass, and we hear nothing. I finally received an e-mail that said they had concerns with our vet history. After that was cleared up, they moved on to the personal references. Again, days pass and we hear nothing. I would send e-mails asking for updates and get no response. Then we get an email saying our references were fine and we would need to fill out yet another application. She asked for us to fill the application out how we would answer it, and how our children's grandmother would respond since she occasionally stays at the house and watches our two children. Weeks pass, no communication. Finally, I call them, and she tells me that my application was dismissed because they didn't feel enough information was given on my children's grandmother and how she would feel about caring for both children and a new puppy . Did they communicate to tell me that not enough information was given- No- of course not - just decided to throw out the application and not respond to my e-mails. On the phone I explained to her that my work schedule had changed and my mother-in-law was no longer at the house watching the children and they would soon be back at school. She said that changes things and they would reactivate my application. Then I received multiple e-mails grilling me about my work schedule stating that my 5 hour work schedule was too long for a dog to be home by itself, so I assured her my husband would come home from lunch and walk the dog daily. Now they were finally ready to show us a dog. We got to pick our top five dogs, and was set up with our top choice! We were so excited! Finally, I thought things were looking better, and all of this was going to be worth the wait. But little did I know, what I was about to experience was the biggest drop in our roller coaster ride of emotions. After the visit with the dog, late that night we receive an e-mail that said we need to discuss the visit. I called her first thing in the morning and waited all day for her to return my call. She finally calls, and said we could not get the dog or any dog from them because my daughter appeared "fearful" of the dog and it would not be a good fit. I think it is unfair to determine if we are a good fit based on a 20 minute meet and greet in the pouring rain. I am sure my daughter is not the only child who is a little nervous about meeting a new dog for the first time. We have taught our children to not run to dogs and give them big hugs. We have told them to ask before petting a new dog and make sure it is safe. I think my daughter's actions were appropriate under the circumstances especially due to the fact my husband was bit by a dog whose owners told us he was friendly and okay to pet. Since then our children always ask if a dog is friendly. My daughter did not run away, hide, or cry, but rather just ask questions making sure it was safe. She even brought a ball for the dog to play with. After we left, we went to the pet store to get everything we would need, and my daughter picked out a butterfly toy and a purple bone for the dog because the foster mom had said she likes butterflies and bones. Myself, and the kids are very disappointed and heartbroken. We have a large fenced in yard, a home with plenty of neighborhood dogs to play with, and huge hearts looking for a dog to love. I apologize for the long review, but I don't want another family to have to go through what we went through. So unless, you don't mind waiting 3+months for a dog, don't mind a rigorous screening process, don't mind ignored e-mails, work less than 4 hours a day, and have children that run up to strange dogs and snuggle them, I suggest you look elsewhere!!
