An email sent from me to the vet clinic. I'm asking about the price difference between the estimate and what I was told on the phone.
Beck N.

This is a long story, but it's important to me that other small pet owners, especially rat owners, know the dangers of taking your pet to this vet. I attached some images at the bottom - the first three are the emails between me and the clinic, as well as the written estimate for a single rat neuter. The fourth is a picture of my rats as rat tax. The fifth is a somewhat graphic picture of the abnormally large incision site, so consider this a content warning. Tldr: I would not recommend this vet, especially for small/exotic animals. They are dishonest about pricing and don't dose pain meds properly, as well as having abnormally large incisions for a simple surgery (neuters are generally not that invasive), and a disregard for extremely concerning post-op behaviors. Required a lot of prompting from me as an owner for them to even realize that something was seriously wrong after surgery. Full story: I had to get two of my pet rats neutered for aggression. I called and set up an appointment, and they requested a deposit over the phone of $100 per surgery ($200 total) to hold the appointment. I asked if they had an estimate on the total cost of the procedure, and the person on the phone told me that the $100 each would cover most of the cost of the procedure. They said I would get an email with an official typed up estimate before the appointment. The first date I scheduled this appointment for, they cancelled 10 minutes before my appointment time. I was willing to let this slide, since sometimes emergencies happen. We rescheduled for a few days later. When I emailed them requesting the price estimate that had not yet been sent, they came back with a $425 estimate per rat. This is a total of $850 for something that I was told on the phone would cost around $200. However, at this point I had already given them my deposit since it sounded like a reasonable price over the phone. They sent me the estimate at around 5pm the night before the 9am appointment, which means according to their 24 hour cancellation policy, I was unable to cancel without losing my $200 deposit. I emailed them back asking why the price was so different than what I was told over the phone, and the email I received in return simply claimed that they never agreed to a price over the phone. So, I was locked into this procedure. Alright, I mean, I care about my pets. If they're charging this much, I'd hope they know their stuff. Maybe it's worth the price tag. However, the problems continued even after the surgeries. The incision for the neuter, which usually is only a tiny cut or two on the scrotum, was a large cut that went halfway up each rat's stomach. I was sent home with pain meds to give every 24 hours, but rats metabolize meds faster than cats or dogs. Like clockwork, for the next few days, at the 12 hour mark my rats would pull out their stitches. They were also displaying signs of pain after about 12 hours after giving them their meds. This went on for almost a week, each time the vets putting another cone on the rat only for him to slip out. They also prescribed more meds such as metacam (for pain) and antibiotics, which cost me several charges of $75 each time I needed them. Eventually it got to a point where the wound on one of my rats had been opened and re-stapled so many times that it needed a revision in order for it to heal properly. He had stopped eating and was acting lethargic, but the vets didn't seem to see any problems with that until I insisted we take a look at it early because he was acting off. They then tried to charge me another $325 for the revision to fix the wound. At this point I was simply done financially and mentally, and I told them that as much as I wanted to I was simply not able to pay for that. They then lowered the price to $75, which I was able to manage since it would save my pet's life. However, this does not erase the fact that I ended up paying $75 to do a surgery that was the fault of the vets misdosing pain meds, and should never have been an issue in the first place. Overall, their post-op care was extremely concerning and it didn't seem like they knew much about rats, despite advertising themselves as exotic vets. They were dishonest about pricing, tried to claim that I was never given an estimate over the phone, and locked me into paying a total of around $1000 for two small animal neuters despite clearly not having expertise with the procedure. If I didn't have as much knowledge about rat healthcare they easily could have died from this - lethargy and refusing to eat after a surgery is a HUGE red flag that something is wrong. Don't take your small animals here, it's not worth the price and you may end up with a pet in worse shape than when you started.

Staff was super helpful and friendly, very clean and quiet inside. Super quick and easy appointment with no wait. Wasn't terribly expensive either which was nice! The tech's also must be pretty skilled because my cat didn't seem at all flustered after getting the vaccines. Overall have nothing negative to say.

The two vets here have both taken great care of my two bunnies. Bunny owners often struggle finding a bunny-savvy vet. They neutered one of my bunnies, and the next one is coming up. I have full trust in them. Not only do they have great vet skills, but both vets have been just great people to be around. Their emotional intelligence and humor go above and beyond. Also, their staff is great. The vet techs (sadly I do not know their names) are so sweet with my baby bunnies. Also, Melanie up at the front is so helpful. In short - these people are wonderful. Going to the vet is a pleasant experience. One of my best friends goes here with her dog as well, and she has only wonderful things to say about it!

We have found Shelburne Veterinary Hospital very professional and a caring place to take our pet. They are thorough and their prices are fair. We recommend this vet to anyone looking for quality veterinarian care.

Dr. Bisson saved my kitty's life. He went into Diabetic Ketosis. Megan and Dr. Bisson were very thorough and did so many tests. Kitty had fluid on his lungs and a fever. After a few days he sent him home to be comfortable and my kitty recovered. He was always kind yet realistic. The billing was more than fair. Happy to have extra time left with my fur baby.

5 stars & 4 paws up for Shelburne Veterinary Hospital!

I cannot say enough positive things about the Shelburne Veterinary Hospital... the staff is very knowledgeable, as well as incredibly caring, friendly, and attentive. I've been able to make same-day appointments and was once squeezed in on a busy/booked-up Saturday morning when my pup was a little too sick to wait for a Monday appt. I very much appreciate Dr. Bisson's honest and noninvasive approach. I know my fur-baby is getting excellent care, but I NEVER feel like I'm being up-charged, let alone talked into unnecessary services or treatments... actually, on more than one occasion I've asked if everything was included on a bill because the $-amount seemed too low -- when does that ever happen?! My pup also LOVES going there -- it's such a relief to not have to dread vet visits! As soon as we pull into the parking lot she can hardly contain her excitement and wiggles with joy as she greets the staff before getting on her back for belly rubs (see photo evidence, with Dr. Bisson). Shelburne Vet Hospital is an exceptional business... not just for providing excellent veterinarian service, but also for going above and beyond to help their clients (and their loving owners). Needless to say, I'm delighted to recommend them to other "parents" who want the best care for their fur/feathered-babies. Many, many thanks to Dr. Bisson, Mysty, Austin, Sofia, and Alex!

We will never go there again

More than a year ago the internist at Peak Vet in Williston put my dog on a high steroid dose and essentially told me that she would never get off them given her endoscopy results. I had a hard time believing steroids were the only option and there wasn't something else that could be done. It was a difficult to get attention from my doctor or have any of her energy put toward the problem once the diagnosis was made. Her mind seemed to be made up and the book was closed. Please understand, Peak is considered an amazing place and has a great reputation, but this practitioner, at the very least, didn't seem to want to try to scratch the surface of the problem or explore other solutions once the diagnosis was made. Probably because she firmly believed it was a waste of energy and there weren't other ways to fix things. Many doctors are like this. But I have seen enough in my life to realize that western medicine's approach isn't always the only way. There is still so much to be learned about health. Healthcare practitioners are making strides but they don't have all the answers. No one does. Very frustrated, disheartened and tired, I started to explore other routes. I saw lots of other vets and behaviorists, etc. I sifted through the info and then I explored options. Thank god I went to Qi. Coleen and Nate at Qi were willing to try different approaches. Granted, initially the approaches they tried with diet didn't work, and we had to try various things because my doggie doesn't even fit in a mold with Eastern medicine ( ; ) ), but at least Qi tried and listened to me. And eventually, we've crafted something that is working. A year later my pup is on 1/24th of the previous steroid dose (even less if you consider she's only getting steroids once every two days now) and almost at the point of being off entirely. She's on a brand new homemade diet and Chinese herbs that soothe her belly and her mind. I'm not saying she's now perfectly healthy. She has a chronic condition and will never be able to eat the varied diet she used to. But with the herbs/meds and with a realization how much diet and stress affect her, her condition is now manageable and she's happy. Bravo to Qi and its staff for being willing to try different approaches and take the time to question the norms. My pooch has made Qi question things they normally do, as she doesn't always fit the mold, but with trial and error, caring and developing a relationship with us, she's 90% better than she was 9 months ago today. Thanks to Coleen, Nate, Jeff, Dez (no longer there) and the rest of the staff for having a heart and being problem solvers, investigative and open to questions and different solutions. I brought my more than 13 year old male Beagle dog here because he was struggling to breathe the last 2 days. When I arrived about 11:15 AM there was no wait time, no one in the lobby which is one of the things that made this visit that made me feel, I can't really say good under the circumstances. The people at the front desk were probably the most kind and professional people I was glad to deal with when I was an emotional mess. I gave them a $200 deposit for the visit and they took my dog back to the vets to be seen as soon as I got there. I feared the worse and probably about 15 minutes later they called me back in a room to tell me they would have to put my dog "to sleep" (God knows I hated those words). But I have to give the workers and the professional vets I dealt with were probably God sent people to help me get through my situation. When I agreed he (my dog) should be cremated, the employees said they took up a collection in order to pay for it. When I got home after this heartbreaking experience I saw an email that said they refunded the $200 deposit so I called to verify. Me being a disabled USA Army veteran, I always struggle every month financially and it seems like I am out of money by the middle of every month but I do believe that with God's help I make it through each month. So it was a great burden lifted in such a heartbreaking time that I was charged nothing. I plan on saving to get another Beagle puppy dog from a breeder in the next several months. It amazes me how emotionally attached I had gotten to my Beagle over more than 13 years. I truly believe a dog can be a man's best friend and whether it is true or not it seems this dog gave me unconditional love that is difficult even in this wild world we live in the same unconditional love that is difficult to get from human beings. I would highly recommend to anyone and everyone this Emergency animal hospital that is open 24/7. I have the utmost respect for the workers there that went above and beyond with their kindness and professionalism. Good luck & Godspeed.
