We used to go here lots but had not been there in a while but was there a week ago. Things have certainly gone down hill. The burger was Ok but the chips were definitely reheats of old fries!! Over done and on the cold side. Went downstairs to use the washroom and the ladies was GROSS!!! It has not been cleaned in a very very long time!!! I was not certain I wanted to use it - I have been in Africa and used lots of squat-a-potties but this was BAD!!! Not sure how they passed health inspection!!! Won't be going back again. read more

These pictures don't do it justice. It was such a yummy meal. We also had the tater tots. The hotdog is the best. It's grilled over charcoal as well. Gravy was quite tasty. They are very lovely. I remember the original owners who were also quite nice and I'm so glad that this group has purchased the charcoal pit. read more

True Rating: 3.7/5 Came here for the first time tonight and completely forgot to try the burger. i ordered the chicken souvlaki on a pita. The chicken souvlaki pieces were big, generous and fresh. They didn't precook it and kept it warm in a warm plate which is a big plus and bonus points. There wasn't much flavor to it though. So i was a little disappointed since i had grown up on the Danforth. The lettuce, tomato and onion were fresh though the tomato is tasteless especially this time of the year. Lastly, i wasn't very impressed with the tzatziki sauce either. The pita was fresh and grilled nicely. Overall it was a pretty good sandwich. Bf had the banquet burger combo with a small fries and a can of soda. The burger was also freshly cooked on a grill and was a good sized patty. They had about 12 ingredients you could add to customize your burger. Out of the 12 there were about 6 different sauces and 6 kinds of toppings to choose from. It was awesome they had canned Pepsi products including Pepsi Zero. The fries weren't salted but were fresh, non greasy and a good thickness. The cashier was polite and nice, and the 2 cooks in the kitchen seem that way also. The restaurant eating area appeared to be clean and kept that way regularly. The restaurant didn't smell like it was greasy or smoky which makes it a good atmosphere. No music to listen to though. i think it's a cash and or debit only establishment. So a bit of a misleading name as there is no longer a charcoal pit there. Rather, meat is cooked on the gas grill. However, there's not ethical issue as that's the name they had when they opened 50 years ago - so I can't blame them for not changing it. The menu is effectively, burgers, hot dogs, fries, poutine and pita/souvlaki type items. We went with the chicken souvlaki combo with fries. Both the fresh cut fries and meat was cooked to order. Pretty simple, but as the saying goes "good food makes good food". Perfectly cooked chicken with a nice char that was well-seasoned in advance. The tzaziki was authentic and went well in the wrap with lettuce, tomato and the grilled onions available at no extra charge. Fresh-cut fries are always a win. Similar tasting to the fries at Swiss Chalet. Seems like a place that you can't really go wrong with if you're in the mood for this type of thing, and good location right off the lake. read more

It looked like a takeout place but also has some old fashioned seats....its located downtown Burlington on Lake shore and James close to Brant street. Food was pretty mediocre, I used to go to this place often for the fries and chicken strips way back, but was a bit disappointed revisiting this time. The salad was good and a decent portion size, dressing to go with it was really good. For $16 the amount of chicken was disappointing and the fries didn't seem too fresh. The rice was decent with the tzatziki sauce being a star. It was nice and brought the flavour. You can probably get a better more satisfying deal from some where else. read more

Let's be clear: this is not a fine dining restaurant, it's a grease spot. And what it does, it does well. Prices are decent, and you get pretty solid bang for your buck. Quantities are good, and every time I've ever been here (most recently about a month ago) the food has tasted great. If I have one complaint, it's that the staff always seem annoyed at having to deal with customers--any customers. Such a staple in Burlington. My only complaint is that they're not open late early-mid week. The gyros are delicious, the burgers excellent and the poutine awesome. The light gravy gives it great flavour and the melted cheese as opposed to cheese curds is a welcomed change. We will always grab takeout or get delivery and are never disappointed. It's the one "fast food" place I'll get as delivery. read more

Stopped by here with my girlfriend on a late Saturday night. we had a quick look at the menu and realized we wanted to go elsewhere and as we left the chef of the restaurant mockingly in an Indian accent said "thank you come again" as we left because we're brown. We found this tasteless and opted to be the better people by just ignoring it and leaving. This is basically racism and not how any establishment in Canada should portray themselves irrespective of how good the food is. Located right in downtown Burlington, this old school greek joint has been here for years along with its charm. Being in this area late at night and craving a burger, I knew this place had at least something to offer me. As soon as you walk in you notice the awkward seating that's in a backwards L shape. But no Probs because you're coming here for the food right. I was going to try their souvaki dinner but I wasn't that hungry, so I got the banquet burger with cheese and back bacon also with a poutine. Charcoal Pit is a Burlington staple! I've been there many times, my Burlington friends love this place and we end up going there often when I come visit my parents. Charcoal Pit is the best place to go for late night eats, though it's always very busy right after the bars close on weekend. The interior isn't that great, it's just like a typical old greasy spoon diner. The poutine is good, burgers are great, as are the onion rings, but the real treat are the Greek fries. Greek fries are pretty much like a poutine but with feta and Greek dressing instead of curds and gravy. I've brought so many friends from out of town here specifically for these fries, and though other restaurants might have similar dishes, nothing compares to Charcoal Pit! read more

This place is pretty decent, I've gotten a burger from here that was good, not great, but I love that you can ask for tzatziki in it for a Greek twist. I've also tried their gyro which is alright, but nothing resembling an authentic Greek gyro. Alright place for a bite to eat, especially of you're hungry in the early hours of the morning (as it's open pretty late), but other than that, nothing special. read more

I ordered a gyro and it costs 6.50. The bread was too small the toppings fell out... It was nothing like the ones I had in Greece... did not include fries as part of topic choice, the meat was very processed and artificial tasting. The owner made arrogant remarks and I ate only 1/5 of my gyro and threw it away.... I normally don't write reviews... But I don't want other people to waste their appetite money or time.... Great food even at 3 am but it comes with a price. If you pay cash and it's busy you will get ripped off ,meaning you will be short changed (purposly). This happened on many occasions to many people. Also on one occasion when I was waiting on a meal the burger flipper said to the boss "I don't feel like grabbing a nother bag of fries from freezer"and the boss replied just fill the fries up half way from now" Meaning people paid the cost of a full fry and received 50% less fries. I would love to give this location a 5 star rating, because they truely do deserve it. Ive been going to the Charcoal Pit since i was very younge (FYI it used to be called Burger Pit) and i have ALWAYS enjoyed my food. I was even more excited when they added the veggie burger to the menu. Unfortuanetly, I give it two stars due to awful customer service from one of the staff members. Im not sure of the mans name, but he has "chubs" (I believe) tattooed on his fingers. He was very rude and impolite. Rolled his eyes, and gave attitude once my family and I started taking our orders. Place used to be amazing, but the last year I have noticed everything going down hill. The place still has the kinda forgotten diner look which is alright, but the food is either over or under cooked. Service has recently been mediocre, the people up front let me know that they were kinda done with their shift already and I feel that. I also work in food though and when you feel like that you gotta suck it up and at least try to make the customer feels welcome. Stopped in here after a taxing Saturday afternoon at Ikea. Best decision ever! I had the veggie burger combo. My other half had the chicken souvlaki on a roll. We both appreciated the fresh cut fries. The option of ketchup and two types of vinegar was an added bonus. My veggie burger was tasty, perfectly cooked, and on a great sized roll. I loved all the options for toppings and sauces. So much so that I had to choose everything except the mayo! The special onion topping they had really added that something special! My other half said "it was good simple food." The staff was super friendly and served with a smile. Something we really needed coming from Ikea.
