    Double Smash with small fries
    Karlo C.

Popped into Burger She Wrote at their new location on Ventura in the Valley. Now, I've had Burger She Wrote before at the Hollywood location, and that was fantastic. They had a lot more options when it came to sides and extras. I believe they even had a chicken sandwich. They definitely had onion rings and either fried zucchini or fried pickles, I don't remember exactly. I came in with pretty high expectations considering I'd had them before, but to be honest, it was quite a letdown and not as good as I remembered. Maybe it's because it's a new location? The texture of the patties was good. The way a smash burger should be, meaty, but crispy at the same time. I think they were a little too light on the seasoning because the burger lacked flavor, and truthfully, it just felt like an average burger. The fries were decent, and I also grabbed a bottle of water. This burger, which was gone in about three bites, cost me $30 with tip. Now, I'm not saying don't come here. It's still a cool burger spot, but there are definitely better burgers in the Valley and along Ventura. The vibe is cool. It's very street-style. You're basically eating on the sidewalk. They have outdoor seating set up, and the inside is pretty small, really just a counter to order from and a few stools. Lastly, the service was solid. Nothing special, but nothing to complain about either.

I'm a big fan of smash burgers and this is now one of my favorites! Patties had the perfect meat lace with fantastic flavor. My only complaint would be the buns. Wish they were a little more toasted. Other than that, this is a near perfect smashed burger. Highly recommend!

Double Oklahoma Burger well done !

First time trying this fairly new location and although a bit pricey , the food was delicious ! I ordered 3 items all well done and in 6.5 minutes my order was ready and correct - Bravo ! Parking fairly easy and the dog menu a bonus !!

Heard a new burger place with a catchy name was having a soft opening up a few blocks from my house so had to swing by. ========= LOCATION ========= Located in the heart of Sherman Oaks (Ventura Blvd, near Van Nuys Blvd) this small mostly take out Smashburger spot may be hard to miss if you blink. Nestled a block or two inbetween a Fatburger and McDonald's, BSWrote features a small window stooled counter and a few outdoor tables located on the sidewalk out front. Inside it's fairly simple, a large easy to read board with their (2) burger options, fries and drinks menu. It's pretty narrow inside and when I went it was empty so it wasn't too bad but if you come during a rush, it might be an issue. ========= THE FOOD ========= ~ THE OKLAHOMA BURGER -- (single) The burger patty was huuuuuge circumference-wise and paper thin. Imagine a thin giant burger CD of meat. The edges were nice and crispy. The middle was a bit too thin for my liking so I'd definitely get a double next time. The burger was 100% A5 Wagyu meat (no blend) from Snake River Farms and came on a small Kings Hawatian bun. It was topped with American cheese, ketchup, grilled onions, pickles, mustard & mayo. Other than the thinness of the meat my only other real complaint was the bun size in comparison to the meat. (4/5) ~ FRIES -- Freshly made they come in a (small) $4 option or a normal $6 option. The small was a decent size for my burger and it paired well with it. Their fries were definitely unique, more on the peppery side but I enjoyed them. Not too thicc, not too thin. Have I had better? Sure. Were they pretty good? Definitely. (4/5) =============== FINAL THOUGHTS =============== I love that it's a simple menu. The ONLY difference between the Oklahoma and the regular burger is one has GRILLED Onions, the other has regular onions. While it's a bit pricey, for Sherman Oaks it's right on par with other Ventura craft burger spots. Every bite of my burger had flavor so I'm definitely going to add it into my rotation of monthly eats especially since it's walking distance from my house and my favorite Donut Shop (K's) less than a block away.

The exterior. A good amount of seating outside.
    Michael L.

The service was great. Everyone was nice. The burger tasted really good too but was very small for the price. I was hungry an hour later.

Trying to order off the website on toast

Is this place even open. 3 days have tried calling and no one answered the phone. Tried ordering online off the website, which takes you to toast and it says "not accepting orders".

Ordered the Oklahoma burger with no bun, ketchup or mayo and one slice of cheese. Cheese for me can over power a burger. It was suppose to have pickles and mustard. However, the cook didnt put it. The cheese and more onion are in between the two patties. Great burger. A must try. Fries were awesome unlike other places. I hope the cook pays more attention to detail.

There's music that's lively without being overbearing, and the staff is uniformly friendly. But... You have to order at the bar and, though they have runners to bring your food, you do have to hunt them down for anything after the delivery (extra ketchup, etc). While this isn't my favorite system at my age, to be fair, whatever the owners are saving on staff is reflected in the prices, which are absolutely below most places in the area for food that is good-quality and drinks that are generously poured. So yes, my wife's Espresso Martini was served in a deep-bellied Belgium beer glass, and my whiskey neat was a hefty pour. Yay!! For food, I ordered the Smash Burger, which is served with melted American, grilled onions and the house version of Russian dressing (as well as pickles, which I deleted). The burgers had a nice, smashed crust while remaining juicy, the cheese was properly melted, and the grilled onions had a terrific caramelized sweetness, while the house sauce was very well-balanced: ketchupy and creamy without being too mayonnaise-heavy. A very good smasher. My wife ordered the Big Texan Burger because she wanted cheddar and frizzled onions and BBQ sauce, though she deleted the bacon and pork belly that are normally included. This, too, was a very good burger: cooked to a proper and pleasing medium-rare and well-seasoned, with a good, fresh flavor to the beef. The onion rings were less successful, which are of the beer batter type, but seemed to be a commercial, frozen product. The coating was browned but not crisp, and the flavor was relatively nondescript. We didn't really eat them, and wouldn't order them again. And so, to me, The Tipsy Cow is a bit of a mixed bag: reasonably priced decent food and reasonably priced, generously-poured drinks -- but in a mostly self-serve environment that incrementally loses its appeal in relation to your age and your dining circumstances. Certainly worth a try, but you've gotta be in the right mood.

We paid $68 for two salads and an order of fries, which felt overpriced for the quality and portions. What really stood out, however, was the customer service. I visited with my mother and my toddler son. Since my son wasn't going to eat fried food, I bought him a fruit smoothie from a neighboring business. While we were already in line paying for our order, the owner or manager approached us and informed us that outside food and drinks were not allowed because the restaurant is kosher. Although he said he would make an exception this one time, he approached us again while we were waiting outside for our food. We had chosen to sit outside because the restaurant was crowded, loud, and stuffy inside. Despite us not causing any issues, he again insisted that the smoothie could not be on the premises and began explaining that his license could be suspended due to association rules. We politely told him it wasn't a problem and decided to take our food to go. I understand businesses have policies, but the way the situation was handled felt unnecessarily confrontational, especially considering the drink was for a toddler and we had already spent nearly $70 at the restaurant. Between the mediocre food, high prices, and rude customer service, I would not return. There are plenty of better dining options in the area.

Sherman Oaks is gritty and the section of Ventura Boulevard that houses TLP is almost brutalist in its anti-establishment aesthetic. You would never know it was here if you didn't either live in the neighborhood or seek it out as I did. It is sandwiched between a completely non-descript place that I didn't even look at and a crystals shop with grafitti-etched windows (unfortunately!) but some really cool beads. Inside is the same -- no frills, a dress-down and survive-if-you-dare vibe. My pictures will illustrate what I mean. Nevertheless, the friendly service (shout out to our server, Patrick), the menu, and the quality of the food are well worth it. Again, see what we ordered in the photos attached. Everything was delicious. The floor, tables, and chairs were all clean. There is some kind of post-apocalypse rhumba going on with the ceiling treatment. It is almost reverse-logic art with all the shading (stains? velour movement?) and utilitarian installation it reveals. Love the walls though, and the worn distressed wood everywhere (see the pix, folks). A bonus was watching the Masters (Patrick let us linger) and sitting by a giant window that was open to the street. Parking is up a block or so on either side. We always find safe spots in Sherman Oaks. The music seemed to be one CD of an unknown (to me) vocal artist and was pleasant. The crowd was friendly and the whole atmosphere was like one big homey grunge party. You know those mornings you fall out of bed and almost don't want to change out of your pajamas or yoga threds? This is the place to go. I loved it. (NOTE: You may have to refresh this page twice to see my pictures, for some reason. grrrrrr)
