Finally stopped into Burger She Wrote, snagging one of the hard-to-get parking spaces out front because I was on the early side. This location is on a very busy stretch of Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks, and parking can be a bit of an issue at certain times. The venue is small, with just 3 counter seats inside to go with their kitchen and cashier stations. There are several metal tables out front for dining al fresco, but with the temp currently over 100 that wasn't going to be an option. Luckily, again because I was early, there was room for me inside. The menu is minuscule: just a cheeseburger or a double, cooked 1 of 2 ways, the only difference being whether the onions are raw or grilled. They also have fries and canned drinks -- no cups or ice available, just straws. So, ya gotta want what little they've got, and you'd better like it! I should note, they also have a grilled cheese sandwich available. Okay, so I ordered the single Oklahoma Smashburger (the one with grilled onions), and to be fair it was very tasty. Lots of pepper atop the quite-literally flattened beef patty, with nicely grilled onions smashed into the bottom, and American cheese properly melted onto the top. I really did like the burger -- but, I'm not a fan of the Hawaiian rolls they use, and (at least to me) the sweetness of that bread detracts from the savoriness of the burger. French Fries were standard issue commercially bagged fries, but they were cooked to a proper crisp, and were well seasoned with salt and herbs. Also, very good. So, why only 3 stars? Well, I'm always disappointed when a restaurant doesn't have cups and ice to go with their drinks; and the prices are a bit high for what you get. The size of the burger is amplified by the visual trick of the meat flowing over the edges of the bun -- but that's a traditionally-sized Hawaiian bun, which is slider sized (they do make larger ones), so you're really getting very little meat. This single, very thin burger with fries and a drink was just a bit under $20, and that's just a bit crazy for what is essentially a fast food meal. read more

Such a great addition to Sherman Oaks. The menu is incredibly simple, basically two burger options, and honestly, they don't need to do more. I am new to eating burgers of any kind. Get the one with the onion. Trust me. It is SO good. perfectly cooked, packed with flavor, and the onion takes the whole thing over the top and you don't even see them. We tried the classic smash burger, oklahoma, and their seasonal jalepeno smash, plus regular fries (BEST!!) and fancy fries (loaded). Everything was fab! The interior was adorned with tesselating cube tiles which matched the cups the fries come in - next level! The Oklahoma smash burger was crispy, carmelized and satisfying especially with the kings Hawaiian topped bun. The burgers could be a bit bigger in my opinion but were sufficient. The fries were peppery and crisp. The server and cook were attentive and efficient. A rogue meth head with a hammer tweaking out front was a rare sighting that did not adversely impact the meal since he zombied on before the police never arrived. read more

Heard a new burger place with a catchy name was having a soft opening up a few blocks from my house so had to swing by. ========= LOCATION ========= Located in the heart of Sherman Oaks (Ventura Blvd, near Van Nuys Blvd) this small mostly take out Smashburger spot may be hard to miss if you blink. Nestled a block or two inbetween a Fatburger and McDonald's, BSWrote features a small window stooled counter and a few outdoor tables located on the sidewalk out front. Inside it's fairly simple, a large easy to read board with their (2) burger options, fries and drinks menu. It's pretty narrow inside and when I went it was empty so it wasn't too bad but if you come during a rush, it might be an issue. ========= THE FOOD ========= ~ THE OKLAHOMA BURGER -- (single) The burger patty was huuuuuge circumference-wise and paper thin. Imagine a thin giant burger CD of meat. The edges were nice and crispy. The middle was a bit too thin for my liking so I'd definitely get a double next time. The burger was 100% A5 Wagyu meat (no blend) from Snake River Farms and came on a small Kings Hawatian bun. It was topped with American cheese, ketchup, grilled onions, pickles, mustard & mayo. Other than the thinness of the meat my only other real complaint was the bun size in comparison to the meat. (4/5) ~ FRIES -- Freshly made they come in a (small) $4 option or a normal $6 option. The small was a decent size for my burger and it paired well with it. Their fries were definitely unique, more on the peppery side but I enjoyed them. Not too thicc, not too thin. Have I had better? Sure. Were they pretty good? Definitely. (4/5) =============== FINAL THOUGHTS =============== I love that it's a simple menu. The ONLY difference between the Oklahoma and the regular burger is one has GRILLED Onions, the other has regular onions. While it's a bit pricey, for Sherman Oaks it's right on par with other Ventura craft burger spots. Popped into Burger She Wrote at their new location on Ventura in the Valley. Now, I've had Burger She Wrote before at the Hollywood location, and that was fantastic. They had a lot more options when it came to sides and extras. I believe they even had a chicken sandwich. They definitely had onion rings and either fried zucchini or fried pickles, I don't remember exactly. I came in with pretty high expectations considering I'd had them before, but to be honest, it was quite a letdown and not as good as I remembered. Maybe it's because it's a new location? The texture of the patties was good. The way a smash burger should be, meaty, but crispy at the same time. I think they were a little too light on the seasoning because the burger lacked flavor, and truthfully, it just felt like an average burger. The fries were decent, and I also grabbed a bottle of water. This burger, which was gone in about three bites, cost me $30 with tip. Now, I'm not saying don't come here. It's still a cool burger spot, but there are definitely better burgers in the Valley and along Ventura. The vibe is cool. It's very street-style. You're basically eating on the sidewalk. They have outdoor seating set up, and the inside is pretty small, really just a counter to order from and a few stools. Lastly, the service was solid. I visited the Burger She Wrote stand at Head in the Clouds Festival this weekend (8/8/26), and unfortunately, the customer service was one of the worst experiences I had at the festival. I understand that festivals are busy. Long lines and longer wait times are expected, and I'm usually pretty patient. But my order was just an order of fries and two bottled waters, and I ended up waiting well over 20 minutes while at least five customers who ordered after me received burgers, fries, and their complete meals before I did. I asked if my order had been lost because, at that point, it honestly seemed like it had. (The orders were hand written btw) I was told twice, "It's coming up." But if all those orders after mine included fries too, how were theirs ready before mine? It simply didn't make sense. What made the experience even more frustrating was the lack of customer service. The tall employee working the register--the one who took my order--saw me standing there the entire time. Instead of checking on my order or offering any explanation, he just shrugged his shoulders as if to say, "Not my problem." That kind of attitude only made an already frustrating situation worse. It takes a lot for me to leave a negative review, but this experience definitely left an impression, and not a good one. Good food can't make up for poor customer service and disorganized order handling. As for the slogan "world-famous smash burgers," after this experience, I honestly found it hard to take that claim seriously. read more

First off, my burger had two hairs in it, so I took it back for him to remake . Second burger was underwhelming, at best. The patties were twice as big in diameter as the bun so the burger edges just drooped over and made it really hard to eat. It was paper thin (in a bad way) and it was just soggy, droopy and greasy. This was my first time. The burger was delicious even though it was a little bit cold. When I placed my order, it said it would be 25 to 30 minutes before it was ready. I arrived there in about 22 minutes and it looked like the burger had been ready for a while, but they hadn't texted me to tell me so. I paid extra for a third patty and it did not appear to be on the burger. Parking is a terrifying nightmare at this location. All of that said... After being reached out to by the staff regarding our experience, they were able to offer us a refund as well as a promise that our next time there would be much better. After waiting a few weeks, my family and I tried it again and it was great! Food was good and hot, and it was ready in about 10 minutes. While the first day is no excuse to have a bad customer experience, it is great to see they took the complaints and used them to improve the restaurant. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR TIME! Just tried this new place, and spent an hour standing in the sun waiting for my order. For context, a soufflé at a nice restaurant will take 30-40 minutes. A smash burger should take 3 minutes tops, on the grill. There is no reason why this place is consistently making people wait upwards of 45 minutes for their food! There was no line when I ordered. Just a normal flow of customers, the fact that it took so long from the time you order to when you get your food is baffling. When I questioned if something was wrong, about 20 minutes into my wait, I was told by the staff that it would take an hour probably. The food was good but not worth the wait. I would recommend not going here until they figure themselves out. Hiho Cheeseburger, Heavy Handed, For the Win, Easy Street and the Win-Dow, have all figured it out.
