Simple double cheeseburger. So good! It's the meat they use.

Everybody that has met Bill Elwell loves him including our family. I'm saddened to learn of his passing. Bill's Hamburgers stand remains one of the best burger spots in San Fernando Valley (Van Nuys) and my FAVORITE place to grab a cheeseburger in Los Angeles County. Rest in Peace Bill, you will be missed.

Finally able to make it iconic burger spot. Wanted to order chili dog and a burger but didn't have chili dogs today. This is a small hole in the wall with small staff. I ended up ordering a double bacon cheese burger. Burger was small, bacon was nice a crispy. The meat was overcookedand could have been seasoned. All in all the burger was decent. When me and my brother showed up it was 1 person and head of us but after we order there was a crowd.

RIP Bill. Thanks for all the memories and great food at your tiny burger shack. God bless your family

It's like the good old days of delicious, fresh and juicy beef burgers with the melty cheese and slight grease i used to remember eating as a kid. Like what McDonalds used to feel like to me but now that I'm older, this is so delightful. $9 for a double cheeseburger and nostalgic satisfaction. Street parking and cash only. Support the local gems!

Update to my last review, I was in LA for a couple of days and was lucky enough to be there when they were open and had burgers available. Although they have other items on the menu they are selling strictly burgers. Burgers are still tasty and reminiscent of the old school burgers with nice griddle cook flavor with mayo, lettuce, tomato and onions. I shot pictures of the current menu and prices. For an old school tasty burger, hit Bill's Burger. I saw Bill sitting in the back room eating.

I'm so happy I finally got to try it. It was so great. Check hours before you go because they're open only when most people are at work. RIP Bill

Bills Burgers was a great burger. Service was friendly but found the 20 min wait for my burger a bit long given the hike in the wall ambience (which I love.) burger itself was excellent. I can't say it's a #1 burger for me but worth the try. It's in a pretty dull area and I am giving it 4/5 cause there's zero seating. You're either eating in your car or eating 2 feet from the guy taking your order. My buddy and I ate and walked around the industrial area talking. Again, the food was very tasty. 7.75/10 in my opinion. But I likely wouldn't go back.

FROM FACEBOOK PAGE My Valley Pass Valley Legend - The passing of Bill Elwell is a heavy loss for the San Fernando Valley. He lived to serve the community for decades and still worked into his 90s. Thank you for the countless hours and dedication to your craft. @billsburgerofficial True Story: I had a friend who's last remaining wish before he passed away was to have a bottle of Vodka and a burger from Bill's. That memory will remain with me forever.

Chili dog aka the best thing here!

Ask the Community - Bill's Hamburgers

    Is Bill still flipping burgers?

Actually and Sadly no, Bill passed away a few weeks ago.

How may The Community notify The Website that the current $$$$ rating is inaccurate, and should be changed to either $ or $$?

Dont, it keeps the riff raff hipsters out.

Do they still only take cash?

    Yes

Does the chili have beans? Can you order a plain bacon cheeseburger?

    No and yes

Are you allowed to get a burger WITHOUT MAYO?

    Yes if Bill likes you

Is there an option to add ketchup to your burger?

They're a "no customization" kinda place. Best bet is to BYO

Went to today and wasn't open, are the hours on Tuesday different?

    8:30a-4:00p Tuesday- Friday

Is Bills open today Mon the 20th?

Bill's is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. Open Tuesdays through Fridays from 8:30AM-4PM.

Does anyone know when Bill is planning to retire?

Whenever God decides to change his address

Is Bill's open on Thursday, Dec 24? I don't live close by and the restaurant doesn't answer the phone. Hopefully someone local that is stopping by can check the holiday hours. Thank you!

No I was there on Friday and they had the holiday hours were posted. They closed for the holiday on Dec. 21 and won't be open til January.

The family and I tried to go on Thursday, July 16 during normal business hours but the stand was closed with no explanation anybody know what's up?

I went today on July 28, 2020 and it was open. I live nearby and they stick to their hours. It is a 3 person operation so they do take days off unexpectedly which is probably what you experienced.

    Is still open during quarantine?

Yes. Tuesday to Friday, 8:30a to 4p.

    Is Bills open during Quarantine?

Don't know but they do have a phone number so just call them.

    Probably!!

Anyone know what kind of buns they use? I'm allergic to potatoes. :(

I believe just regular white bread buns

    Is Bill's open on Saturdays?

    No. You're outta luck.

    Is Bill's open today?

    Yes!!

Will Bill's be open on Jan 1st 2019?

The atmosphere is casual and…read morefestive, with TV's playing sports and a varied crowd that includes daters, older couples, families and singles making the most of their weekend. There's music that's lively without being overbearing, and the staff is uniformly friendly. But... You have to order at the bar and, though they have runners to bring your food, you do have to hunt them down for anything after the delivery (extra ketchup, etc). While this isn't my favorite system at my age, to be fair, whatever the owners are saving on staff is reflected in the prices, which are absolutely below most places in the area for food that is good-quality and drinks that are generously poured. So yes, my wife's Espresso Martini was served in a deep-bellied Belgium beer glass, and my whiskey neat was a hefty pour. Yay!! For food, I ordered the Smash Burger, which is served with melted American, grilled onions and the house version of Russian dressing (as well as pickles, which I deleted). The burgers had a nice, smashed crust while remaining juicy, the cheese was properly melted, and the grilled onions had a terrific caramelized sweetness, while the house sauce was very well-balanced: ketchupy and creamy without being too mayonnaise-heavy. A very good smasher. My wife ordered the Big Texan Burger because she wanted cheddar and frizzled onions and BBQ sauce, though she deleted the bacon and pork belly that are normally included. This, too, was a very good burger: cooked to a proper and pleasing medium-rare and well-seasoned, with a good, fresh flavor to the beef. The onion rings were less successful, which are of the beer batter type, but seemed to be a commercial, frozen product. The coating was browned but not crisp, and the flavor was relatively nondescript. We didn't really eat them, and wouldn't order them again. And so, to me, The Tipsy Cow is a bit of a mixed bag: reasonably priced decent food and reasonably priced, generously-poured drinks -- but in a mostly self-serve environment that incrementally loses its appeal in relation to your age and your dining circumstances. Certainly worth a try, but you've gotta be in the right mood.

We paid $68 for two salads and an order of fries, which felt overpriced for the quality and portions. What really stood out, however, was the customer service. I visited with my mother and my toddler son. Since my son wasn't going to eat fried food, I bought him a fruit smoothie from a neighboring business. While we were already in line paying for our order, the owner or manager approached us and informed us that outside food and drinks were not allowed because the restaurant is kosher. Although he said he would make an exception this one time, he approached us again while we were waiting outside for our food. We had chosen to sit outside because the restaurant was crowded, loud, and stuffy inside. Despite us not causing any issues, he again insisted that the smoothie could not be on the premises and began explaining that his license could be suspended due to association rules. We politely told him it wasn't a problem and decided to take our food to go. I understand businesses have policies, but the way the situation was handled felt unnecessarily confrontational, especially considering the drink was for a toddler and we had already spent nearly $70 at the restaurant. Between the mediocre food, high prices, and rude customer service, I would not return. There are plenty of better dining options in the area.

Sherman Oaks is gritty and the section of Ventura Boulevard that houses TLP is almost brutalist in its anti-establishment aesthetic. You would never know it was here if you didn't either live in the neighborhood or seek it out as I did. It is sandwiched between a completely non-descript place that I didn't even look at and a crystals shop with grafitti-etched windows (unfortunately!) but some really cool beads. Inside is the same -- no frills, a dress-down and survive-if-you-dare vibe. My pictures will illustrate what I mean. Nevertheless, the friendly service (shout out to our server, Patrick), the menu, and the quality of the food are well worth it. Again, see what we ordered in the photos attached. Everything was delicious. The floor, tables, and chairs were all clean. There is some kind of post-apocalypse rhumba going on with the ceiling treatment. It is almost reverse-logic art with all the shading (stains? velour movement?) and utilitarian installation it reveals. Love the walls though, and the worn distressed wood everywhere (see the pix, folks). A bonus was watching the Masters (Patrick let us linger) and sitting by a giant window that was open to the street. Parking is up a block or so on either side. We always find safe spots in Sherman Oaks. The music seemed to be one CD of an unknown (to me) vocal artist and was pleasant. The crowd was friendly and the whole atmosphere was like one big homey grunge party. You know those mornings you fall out of bed and almost don't want to change out of your pajamas or yoga threds? This is the place to go. I loved it. (NOTE: You may have to refresh this page twice to see my pictures, for some reason. grrrrrr)
