    Perfection

Burger project? More like burger perfect! If you're a fan of the Rockpool bar and grill wagyu burger, you will love Neil Perry's new burger joint. A order/pick up at the counter style restaurant with a small selection of burgers, sides, shakes and beer. There's a decent line up as you would expect with the hype but they've got a good system going pumping them burgers out fast! The patties aren't wagyu, but it doesn't need to be because the grass fed beef patties are cooked to perfection, topped with melted cheese, pickles, minimal veggies between 2 buttery, sugary buns. Absolutely delicious. This is the closest you'll get to Shake Shack in Australia. Neil Perry of Rockpool fame has opened up a burger joint, aptly named Burger Project. Here you can order all sorts of burgers from the original, to a cheeseburger, to a double, to a pork belly burger, to a chicken burger, to a mushroom burger, to a Korean burger and so forth. They also serve fries, hot dogs, fried chicken, and several desserts to go with their shakes. Pure awesome. The beef is grass fed, and you can get a burger for less than $10. Did I mention this beef is grass fed? Today was the opening day, and it was pretty much packed and sold out by 1:30pm. Our order was late and in disarray, but I gave them a pass for that since it's the first day and they need to work kinks out considering the very high demand. I got the double with bacon ($13.90) and a piece of fried chicken ($3.50 for 1 or 3 for $9.) Smashing. Don't expect the burger you'd get at Rockpool though, because it totally isn't that. But seriously come here, arguably the best burger in Sydney along with Mary's.

Bring back the kimchi burger! *waves placard* It was the crown jewel on the menu, the best thing since sliced cabbage. I mean, if you twisted my arm I'd admit that the Double Burger is also the cat's meow, but man, that kimchi burger got me right where my heart should be. Last time I went I walked out and saw a guy getting one of those burger bowls with three patties inside a bowl of lettuce leaves. Kinda defeats the purpose but hey, maybe he's gluten free or some bread slept with his girlfriend or something.

CHEESE & BACON $9.50 (Grass fed beef, bacon, cheese, onion, pickles, tomato, lettuce and secret sauce)

For me, it was the bugger project. Let me explain, firstly there was a bug was on the bread and just I had the urge to bugger off during the tasting. I have never been to Neil Perry's restaurants so I did not have any expectations. The place is bland, no concept, no branding whilst I know the meals have to be prepared in a Maccas style in a chain, I did not want to see the kitchen. It does not add any value for me. Ordering is exactly like Maccas and the speed is alright. The result is burgers that look assembled in a hurry but how about the taste? SPICY PORK BELLY $9.90 (Crispy free range pork belly, salted chilli, pickles, pickled slaw, and lettuce) The burger is a bunch of sliced roasted pork belly with the crackling with salad and spicy pickled slaw. The pork was tough and crackling was not crispy enough. The worst part is that the salad has too much vinegar plus more acidity coming from the pickles made it very unpleasant. What is better than this? Breadtop bun + Roast pork from Chinese BBQ + lettuce + plum sauce. CHEESE & BACON $9.50 (Grass fed beef, bacon, cheese, onion, pickles, tomato, lettuce and secret sauce) Bug on the bun...the end. No picked it out and soldiered on. I think the bug distraction did not influence my tasting. Even with the bug, this burger is much better than the pork. There are some issues with the burger, bread is not right and bacon is too tough: either make is soft and tender or crispy...not inbetween now it tasted like dried meat. Beef patty was good, at least that was alright. HOUSE MADE CHIPS $4.90 (Thrice cooked) The chips served were completely dry, crispy yes but with no actual smooth potato consistency left. Fried to shit basically. 3 times cooked chips is a well known technique, but shouldn't that be used on thicker chips?. Cooking thin chips like these cooked 1, 2 or 3 makes no difference just leave them in the oil for 30 minutes or until burned... if crispy is the only criteria for your chips, you will like these. REAL SHAKES CHOCOLATE $6.50 Good milkshake enjoyed it more than the meal. Served with the whipped foam, it's of a light consistency. Conclusion After this meal, I was so underwhelmed that I had to go to Grill'd downstairs just to get a satisfying meal. The pork belly burger was terrible and the cheese and bacon was sub-standard with many issues in a simple burger. Quite simply there was no care in assembling the burgers. Happy I did not queue up for this a month ago, I would probably rate it even lower. It should have stayed a project, on paper that is. @thesydneynoob

With some fellow Yelpers and friends, we converged on this place one Tuesday night and it was an enjoyable meal. The burger was great and it was a general consensus amongst all the burgers were good. Opinions were divided about the triple cooked fries which were crunchy but probably on the oily side. I also got myself a strawberry thickshake which was pretty good and refreshing. The one downside of this burger joint is the price, I paid almost $20 for my meal which is quite high for what is essentially fast food.

The burgers are good but not the best, it could be because I came here with very high expectations. The wings and chips were very disappointing.

So in that i work so closely with Qantas and fly them frequently, Neil Perry (of both Rockpool Bar & Grill and television fame) is a name that's familiar to me given it's on more or less every single Qantas in flight menu. That being the case, I was keen to try out his literal Burger Project, and I'm certainly glad I did. As a disclaimer, I've spent the last three years living in the Burger Mecca that is Dallas, Texas, so I'm picky when it comes to burgers, but Neil's products here are at least in the same general league as some of the up and coming popular chains back in the states (Larkburger, The Counter, etc.). Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? If I didn't know better I'd swear that Neil took his inspiration for the decor at Burger Project from global burger powerhouse Shake Shack (which, in full disclosure, is my favorite chain burger - period). From the sort of green theme to the positioning of the menu and folks behind the counter I felt transported back stateside, but the system was as efficient as it was friendly, so well done to Mr. Perry there. Abundant and well lit seating for all party types topped everything off nicely, and I was surprised at how quickly my Cheeseburger arrived. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $9.90 AUD ($7.00 USD) got me a decent sized Cheeseburger, and as you can probably even tell by the picture below these were some fresh ingredients and a great ratio of patty to bun to toppings. More specialty burgers obviously bumped the prices a bit up to I believe $13.00+, but either way these were affordable prices. Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? This was a good burger make no mistake. The patty had flavor of its own and came together nicely with the fresh lettuce, the cheese, and what were excellent onions on a fluffy and well sized buns. As others have stated, the whole thing was a bit salty, but I'm of the strong opinion that that's what makes Shake Shack burgers so great. The one other notable downside here was the "special" sauce, which I honestly just wasn't keen on. I get it that once In n' Out came in with their thousand islands that every burger joint feels the need to dish up their own special topping, but it tasted a bit like an odd blend of ketchup and sweet and sour sauce. I just wasn't a fan. Either way, this was a very good and fresh burger, and I wouldn't be surprised if I came back here in the next few days to sample another offering. Single Star Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Honestly? Yes, although it's close given that Grill'd, which is one of my favorite Aussie chains period is literally downstairs in this case. I'll pay Grill'd a visit and see if I feel the same way afterwards. For now though, Star Granted.

From the outset it was clear we would need a posse for this project. Crafty "on the draw" Cyn and myself, Dangerous Dan aka The Sirloin Sniper, collected the baddest burger bandits this side o' the black stump. With our magnificent seven in tow, we rained down on Neil Perry and his minions like a cavalcade of carnivores. I watched as Cyn made short work of Beef, Bacon and Cheese. They never stood a chance. I took Sir Oinks-a-lot, that spicy son of a sow, to market till he went squealing all the way home. The rest of the crew performed admirably mopping up the rest. Poor Fries got a workout, that hapless sack of potatoes was ruffed up by everyone. There was also an appearance by the infamous Shake, who is rarely seen around these parts, but he was dispatched just as swiftly. If you are gonna take on the project be sure to pony up with your meanest for a meat massacre, cos this place is so good it hurts!

Rarely is a meal so good that you are happy to eat with sloppy abandon in the presence of people you have just met, one of whom happens to be a client of your job (Hi Ken!). Burger Project is that good. It is kind of a fancy version of a fast food restaurant but there is nothing virtuous about this place (unless you go in for all that grain-fed, housemade, organic truck). Delicious burgers, massive shakes, beer, and not once, not twice but thrice fried chips. The burger variety is intimidating to say the least. I had a simple cheese and bacon. I'll work my way up to the more exotic fare. Considering what you're getting (and considering the price of Maccas these days) this place is surprisingly cheap. $7.90 for a Rockpool-esque experience? Do it.

The bacon project. Oh my lord it's glorious

Burgers are definitely in the top 5 of my favourite foods and while I've had some great burgers, nothing I've had so far compares to Burger Project. I found out afterwards that it was masterminded by Neil Perry, who is famous for his Rockpool Bar & Grill burger. I only spent 4 short days in Sydney and had so many great dining experiences but this is probably the stand out. I loved the burgers so much that I went for dinner one night and came back for an early lunch the next day...and ordered the same burger twice! The first time I didn't know what to order (happens alot) but then my eyes drifted towards 'The Bacon Project'. Grass fed beef, LOADS of bacon :D, cheese, pickles and secret sauce. I was hoping it would be indulgent and it definitely delivered on that front. Loads of bacon, and I really mean it; they piled on so much bacon that it was almost the dominant flavour. I don't know who supplies their bacon, but for a burger joint it absolutely exceeded expectations. So smoky, not too salty which was good because there was so much of it. It was also 100% bacon strips or streaky bacon, rather than back bacon, the one that that gets really tough when cooked. The bacon was really that good, but the rest of the burger was amazing too. The beef is another standout. Apparently it's a 36 month chuck and brisket blend. At first I was really confused, because I thought the meat was aged for 36 months.....which would probably be gross and inedible but it's actually the cow that's 36 months old. It's normally cooked to medium but my came out a bit under that, pretty much a medium rare. I decided to keep it, as I've never had a medium rare burger. I'm glad I did because it was absolute heaven. There was no mushiness at all which was surprising but at the same time there was a nice char on the exterior. In terms of flavour, the beef stood up to the bacon in that it wasn't overwhelmed. The rest of the burger was top notch. The bun of course was a marshmallowy soft brioche that didn't turn to mush despite the amount of bacon grease and juices. The pickles are house made and there was a decent amount of it, but I would have preferred a bit more due to the richness of the whole thing. I can't really remember the secret sauce because of the cheese and bacon but it was there. One minor con I found was that it came with a loose paper wrapping which quickly got soaked so it was messy right from the get go. I'm also a bit fussy sometimes and prefer a plate and knife as I prefer eating my burger by halves. The second time we ordered some chicken wings to try, despite not ordering the first time. because it was $3.90 for 1 wing...and 3 for $9.90. But I'm happy to say it's well worth the money because it comes with the whole wing so it's the drum+ the flat and they include the wingtip on. The one with the Sichuan Peppercorn was an absolute winner! It's a kinda fruity pepper, hard for me to describe from memory but my god, it's such a unique and creative take on the humble chicken wing! The hot sauce wing is more standard fare, hot sauce with butter lathered of the wing. Good, but not quite as special. I'm so jealous of Sydney residents, they have 2 Burger Projects! The quality of the ingredients are next level but they keep their prices fair, with burgers ranging from $8.90- $13.90. The wings are a bit pricey but so worth it. They also do Ice-cream desserts which I didn't try (strawberry and blueberry pie sounds good). It was jam packed with diners both times I went and they really deserve the success, as it's the best burger I've had. Sorry for the rant once again, but it's as if they put crack in the food. 6/5 if I could give that!

Love the concept of this burger joint by Neil Perry, however the food was only slightly above average and there was quite a long wait for our two burgers and fries. Got the classic burger for $8.90 which tasted fine but not sure if it was worth the money, chilli chips were oily but delicious! A bit disappointed that you had to pay a dollar extra just to get cheese on your burger though... Overall, a great 'healthy' burger joint concept. Would come back for the friendly weeknight atmosphere but look elsewhere for Sydney's best burgers.

Went here for lunch. Decent and average place. The burger was pretty good, but the fries were over cooked. Reasonably priced food and clean dining area.

Casual burger joint that absolutely nails it. The burgers are American to the fullest. Probably one of the best burgers I've had in sydney. Don't hesitate to try it out.
